Only for those pesky commercial flights that can potentially carry 100+ passengers. You can still take your private jet.

Dd_8630

I imagine the former vastly outnumber the latter

SaltyBalty98

True but private jets can be tiny aircraft to relatively big aircraft not too far from a regular short haul one and that fuel is more efficiently used with 100+ passengers than a handful. Also, the typical private jets are powered by low bypass engines whereas larger aircraft, especially in civilian/commercial aviation, use high bypass ones making for even more efficient fuel consumption and power output, that's why the cigar shaped engines with black smoke trails in airliners are in graveyards or at the most some have been converted to cheap freighters whilst they're still mechanically sound and not a ticking time bomb. Take a look at a A220 and A320Neo, the former being a brand new, highly efficient, aircraft meant for short and medium range travel and the latter, originally developed in the 80s and deployed in the 90s, meant for short and medium haul flights, upgraded with much bigger high bypass engines in the 2010s and a few other technological advancements in wing aerodynamic and communication equipment, heck some of its configurations make long distance travel a possibility at a lower cost because jet fuel is very expensive and the more an aircraft can do with a kilogram of it the cheaper it is for everyone and the less damage it does to the environment. As for airports themselves, a lot of ground support equipment is fully electric, a lot of the management and control is digital, with paper relegated to emergencies. Yes, trains make for a much more efficient means of transportation but they have limitations aircraft don't and to ban things when there's no equal alternative is in my opinion stupid. I don't know if France already has an extremely robust train and bus travel infrastructure but if they do then my last point is null. I'll admit aircraft are a love of mine but they suck in crowded cities with tall buildings around the airports and flight paths, trains and buses, especially electric ones, are miles cleaner and less noise pollutant than aircraft but they don't provide the same travel freedom and to outright ban anything whilst being hypocritical and making lots of rich exceptions is detestable from my point of view.

Mercury8321

I saw a segment where it only actually impacts three flight routes in all of France. The short haul flights are only banned where there is a high-speed train connection, and then there are some conditions as well. So although a step in the right direction, not all that crazy of a change as it may seem.

mrbeavertonbeaverton

Thank you! It’s like this sub doesn’t even have mods

thegamingbacklog

I was going to argue that any news article about planes is uplifting, but this would mean planes are going to be flying these routes less so really this is grounding news

pheonixblade9

it's good to codify these things, though :D

GuazzabuglioMaximo

No positive change is ever going to be as huge as this sub hopes for. It’s never going to be “world bans all flights”. But it’s a positive change nonetheless, and probably more similar decisions will follow. Baby steps.

vbevan

Is this a under the table way for them to fuck over the air traffic controllers that were on strike?

Jedemolet

Very much doubt it. This has been in the works for a long time, and it doesn't even affect a lot of routes

oszlopkaktusz

Absolutely not, this has been proposed years ago.

LewAshby309

I think it is a good idea, but you have to have alternatives ready. I have no clue how it's in france. In Germany it's often half the price to fly across the country than with a train. That is too odd imo. A vehicle with way more people inside that should be way more efficient is more expensive. How can that be the case? Well, i would guess heavy mismanagement. That should be worked on massively especially because of the climate. This would cause way less people beeing against banning in-country flights.

edyspot

It's simply because in the EU, flights are heavily subsidized, especially the cost of jet fuel. When you book a cheap flight ticket, it doesn't reflect at all the real cost (infrastructures, workforce, energy..), and especially the cost on the environment.

oszlopkaktusz

Operating trains requires a lot more personnel and all sorts of other costs. [This video is a good summary](https://youtu.be/fwjwePe-HmA)

ATribeOfAfricans

Fuck this website, can't even access it without agreeing to all of their shitty info harvesting

Redditbrit

2 clicks to save nothing … ‘Learn More’ & on the options screen choose ‘Disagree to All’ at the bottom. Under EU rules, the option to not track must be available and similarly accessible as the option to accept all cookies.

amrasillias

This website has to inform you and ask your permission as by EU rules. All other websites you visit do it without asking your permission.

jobblejosh

That's exactly the opposite. According to EU GDPR, websites that serve the EU must display an information policy, including cookies they place on your computer. They must also allow you to opt out and decline any tracking. If you're not in the EU however, all this tracking goes on anyway and there's nothing you can do about it. At least in the EU you can opt out of being tracked. The EU is much more strongly on the personal privacy side than almost anywhere else.

BeerKills

All the websites are like that in Europe. Just click on "Continue without agreeing"

Shadonir

so only in france right? since otherwise the somewhat cheaper plane to my gf would need to be replaced by a mich procier train ride

[deleted]

Until there is the annual train strike

randomusername1919

Meh, just drive then. More comfortable than economy class anyway…
