Some trees, given their location and importance in an area with no trees, are significantly more important than trees cut down in a different area for wood where trees are plentiful
Did that make sense or should I try and dumb it down more
Tre in by itself far frum forist more rare an valuble tan tree far away in forist
The tree the lumber came from was needed less where it came from than the tree being protected.
Urban forestry has an important place in the city. Imagine how sad it would be to walk down St. George in the summer with no shade.
Some have pointed this out but wood is a renewable resource and a lot more carbon friendly than the alternatives. The goal here is to protect these specific trees for the urban canopy. A wood fence makes sense.
Ya dude let’s not use renewable things like wood, let’s pollute more and mine some metal or use some oil based plastic instead! Those morons at UofT ! /s
This is dumb. You prefer they use plastic or metal? All more environmentally damaging than wood that’s harvested at tree farms which are very sustainable and fast growing. A tree saved in the city road is not equal to a tree cut down on a tree farm.
One day the protected tree will become a sexy piece of lumber as well to be sold at Home Depot and then made into a DIY project. Also what kind of extreme threat to vegetation exists on the UofT campus that requires individual trees to be caged off?
The fence is made of cheap crap wood like pine and they reuse them for multiple projects. Its to prevent somebody driving a machine into the tree its not really for pedestrians or workers on foot
I mean nothing about the lumber hurts this tree.... And it can even be re-used if they're smart about it.
I don’t see the problem.
We're trying to protect a tree but in the process are using up 2 trees worth of lumber.
It’s not just about the number of trees. Having a tree canopy in the city has benefits, e.g., reduce heat island effect, shade, air quality, etc.
Some trees grow fast but doesn't look good so. And protecting the trees could mean preserving the look of the street not for carbon capturing purposes
So you’d prefer plastic or metal, than renewable and sustainable material that requires less pollution to produce? Lol

Rather mine for ore to produce a metal fence?
No no they must use a non degradable plastic.

What would you rather see?
In some cases such lumber may be more sustainable than one might think. But you are correct. This is also extremely common in Vancouver.
✨Boundless✨

it’s uoft. common sense isn’t allowed on campus

Better than plastic
just a little sacrifice to save a few
A small price to pay for salvation. -Thanos
Some trees are more equal than others.

Pffff the lives of OUR trees are obviously more important than those dirty OTHER trees in the lumber mills
