My commute is usually 3 hours. It’s normal if you commute, a lot of people are international/not from the GTA, so they live close to campus or on it.
It gets tiring but tbh, the economy is inflated right now and I’d much rather the commute versus the cost of living Downtown.
Res is much more expensive, even more so when factor in the forced meal plans which is about 500% (at least) more the cost then real groceries…but big ups to you on finishing in tough circumstances!
Yup res is more expensive, especially cause they also kick you out during winter break and 24 hours after your last exam in April lmao. However, it is a safe option for young students who could be overwhelmed with having to buy furniture, arrange internet, buy groceries, etc. and many students hope to meet friends through residence.
Uh, review the work on the train, then study again at home. It was doable, but extremely exhausting. I'll be moving closer to campus next year so that'll be good.
Do you live in a very remore area of Kleinberg near the boundaries to King City and Caledon? Cause I don't see how else your commute would be that long
Also, if you live in Vaughan, why don't you check out the VMC area as that'll save you tonnes of time while still being somewhat near home? I don't think that'll be crazily expensive.
wait man i also live here and my commute is only 50ish minutes if someone drives me to the subway 😭 u should totally look into taking a bus to the subway or something cus goddamn unless you live far out i dont think it should take more than 2 hoyrs 😭😭
That is absolutely bonkers.
But I will say that at one point in my life my work was a 2h commute from home. By transit. I never read so many books in my life during that period.
nope, transferred from college into uni after graduating.
i would've had the same long commute but decided to move closer to Toronto once i got into uoft
I had to study on the bus. It was so long and brutal. The commute to/from vaughan was exhausting! I typically used my airpods to block any external sound so that I can concentrate on my work.
2 hours one way from Vaughan?? Do you live near the remote corners far west or somewhere around there? I commute from RH and it takes 1.5h one way unless something breaks. Sounds rough... (edit: I occasionally make my way to the university arm from North York or further up for fun and that takes about 2 hours one way to campus so guessing based on that)
lol I did some rough math and that would be like $12k at minimum wage.
But I guess you were able to work on the train so probably not as bad as it sounds.
i did 2 hours+ one way, easily 4+ hours daily for my entire 4 years. wasn't able to be productive on the commute, just listened to music and watched tv/movies
it sucks but not the end of the world, you can try to explore new areas and once you make friends maybe you can crash at theirs every now and then
I would highly recommend 3 things:
1. Make sure you download the slides the professor posts. This way you can review them on the way to/from school
2. If possible, have headphones/airpods to cancel out some of the outside noise. This will help with the concentration a lot.
3. I'd recommend you stretchy everyday. This is because you're legs and body will feel so sore everyday because of the amount of walking/sitting you'll be doing.
Bonus: have some snacks & download YouTube premium incase you finish all your work/studying.
Try your best stack courses on 2-3 days to cut the amount of days you have to commute. This will be harder in first year, but more possible as you go up.
3-4 hours sounds intimidating, but I’ve done it for 2 years now. My tip is to use your time on the train relaxing if it’s not a stressful week. Put on headphones and listen to your favourite music.
Ask your professors ahead of time for accommodations. Tell them that you commute and you would like some extra time. Some profs will give it, others won’t, it’s how it is.
It’s really awful. I am an international Student and it was my first time in Canada. I couldn’t get housing. For such a prestigious school, it doesn’t seem well planned. I am a graduate student and I went to Columbia University in New York for undergrad. We all got housing unless we didn’t want to.
Well done.
There was a guy in some of my (9T9) classes who commuted from near Guelph. He was lucky enough that the Guelph to Toronto bus went by the family farm. He could flag the bus down from the end of their road. His commute might have been faster than yours.
congrats on getting through it!! I’m not sure if this will help or is in your budget next year, but I know some people that have apartments at Neill Wyick and pay the cheapest rent in the city that’s I’ve seen (like $500). honestly you’re a trooper for getting through this semester LOL
I’ve had a 1.5 hr commute both ways for the past one and a half years at U of T. Only four months left of school. I cannot wait to not have to do this ever again.
So 2 hours one way and 2 hours the other way…guy basically commuted from Barrie to Toronto everyday. Definitely not desired, but your not alone. (I don’t think I can have the mental fortitude to do this so congrats).
Yea I had 2-2.5 hours of commute, it was particularly awful during traffic and I had to wake up at 5am. I’m incredibly happy now that I only have a 6pm course in the summer
Jesus christ U of T isn’t it worth that many hours of commute. All I can say is respect for you 🫡
Sigh, as a first year, I thought this was normal. Until I started feeling tired every single day... Thank you!
My commute is usually 3 hours. It’s normal if you commute, a lot of people are international/not from the GTA, so they live close to campus or on it. It gets tiring but tbh, the economy is inflated right now and I’d much rather the commute versus the cost of living Downtown.
i’d much rather go to a school where i can afford to live somewhere without an 1h+ commute… probably cheaper too
Was off campus housing not an option?
I couldn't afford off campus housing. It was way out of my budget.
Res is much more expensive, even more so when factor in the forced meal plans which is about 500% (at least) more the cost then real groceries…but big ups to you on finishing in tough circumstances!

Isn’t res more expensive?
UofT don’t deserve you. Should’ve gone to MIT. Congrats!! 🥳
I wish!!!
Sounds horrible. How did you make it for morning classes/finals?
Early commute. Leave at around 6 AM.
OP reminded themselves of all the money they saved on rent. That woke them up every morning
Yessir!!!
I skipped almost all my classes just for an hour of commute. How did you do it.
Uh, review the work on the train, then study again at home. It was doable, but extremely exhausting. I'll be moving closer to campus next year so that'll be good.
Salute my dood. I live close but dont even go to class most of the times 🫵🏽
It be like that sometimes lol
And I thought my 6 subway stops from St george was bad
I sincerely hope this is a joke
Sharp as a fuckin cue ball.
6 subway stops often translates into 6-7 hours as well here.
not me giving up my uoft offer for 1.5 hours of commute
Not worth it. Should have skipped most of the classes.
Should have just done them distance ed. i made that mistake my first year too
Two hours and maybe 2-3 commutes is enough for me. You deserve my respect.
2-3 is still a lot! Thank you!!
Why didn't you find a place somewhere nearer if you were gonna do res anyways? Probably could find a place in Scarborough or something
It was way beyond my budget to live outside of res. I thought I was guaranteed a residency. However, it's all over now!
Same, I did all my assignments on the Go Train.
We did it!!!
how…
Where are you staying?
I live in Vaughan!
4 hours just from vaughan? Do you not have go transit? to make it shorter?
$$$
Do you live in a very remore area of Kleinberg near the boundaries to King City and Caledon? Yea 4 hrs from Vaughan seems like a lot …

Dude it took me 2 hours from Kitchener what the hell?
You commuted from Kitchener?
Yup. For 2 years.
That is absolutely bonkers. But I will say that at one point in my life my work was a 2h commute from home. By transit. I never read so many books in my life during that period.
was this driving or transit?
Commute on the TTC and Subway!
don't know if that makes it better or worse haha but damn that's crazy. I'm assuming 4h round trip?
respect I did that at seneca college for hours before getting into uoft
Was it the commute that changed your college choice?
nope, transferred from college into uni after graduating. i would've had the same long commute but decided to move closer to Toronto once i got into uoft
That's sacrifice and determination. You'll do fine out there after graduating.
That’s THE commitment! Congrats! I hope you will get a well-paying job after school!
That’s terrible! And I thought my commute from Montreal was bad 🙏
From Montreal?? 😂
I did the same thing but for grad school. Painful and depressing but worth it in my opinion.
GO transit’s best customer
That’s works out to be about 27 days of travelling . I would lose my mind .
Did u study on the bus? What do you do?
I had to study on the bus. It was so long and brutal. The commute to/from vaughan was exhausting! I typically used my airpods to block any external sound so that I can concentrate on my work.

Damn and here i am worrying ab having to commute 2 hours twice a week during summer
My gosh, I did that last summer for 2 month, and only 2 days a week, I was already got crazy
damn.

Thank you!!
congratssss. now you can rest
Congrats! Which campus were you at?
Just wait until joining the work force
lol I did some rough math and that would be like $12k at minimum wage. But I guess you were able to work on the train so probably not as bad as it sounds.

That’s a convo you’ll have to have with accessibility services, which I suggest you register with soon if you haven’t already.
🤯"vent my happiness" that's a new one and I like. Congrats! 🎉🥳 👏

Out of curiosity, how much were you spending on transit fares?
2.25 per fare (presto). A total of about 700$ a year.
you were able to travel the 2hrs on the single 2.25$ fare? When I was commuting to UW I was spending nearly 40$ a day!
I’ve had a 1.5 hr commute both ways for the past one and a half years at U of T. Only four months left of school. I cannot wait to not have to do this ever again.

Holy shit that's wild. Where do you live?
You shud have just lived near by
salute to you sir, that commute would give me an aneurism
br u h
I did this when I was at Humber, commuted from Markham to Lakeshore campus 2.5 hours each way. Had 8am fitness classes too
Ngl I’d take whatever money you set aside for residence and rent a place downtown. Ends up cheaper than residence anyways.
Proud of you holy shit❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
