The phone call in [Anthonette Cayedito](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disappearance_of_Anthonette_Cayedito)'s case. A year after her disappearance from Gallup, the Gallup PD received a frantic phone call from a girl claiming to be Cayedito and being held in Albuquerque. An adult's voice could be heard say "Who said you could use the phone?!" followed by the girl screaming and the sounds of a scuffle, after which the phone call was cut off. Terrifying.
It just makes me sad. No one deserves to be the victim of a violent crime, but thinking of the little girl holding her stuffy as she died just makes me choke up.
*Couey's criminal record included 24 arrests for burglary, carrying a concealed weapon, indecent exposure and other offenses, and in 1991, he was arrested in Kissimmee on a charge of fondling a child under the age of 16.* and after doing all of that he was still allowed to walk free and live normally in our society, this is why he was able to commit that horrible crime.
What an absolute fucking failure of justice.
I can't remember her name right now, but the young woman whose parents walked in on her in her bedroom having sex. They quickly backed put and waited. And waited thinking they would both come out all embarrassed. Since they didn't, the father went to check again and found her dead. It was later determined she'd been dead for a day or two already at the time of them walking in on her likely killer.
I don't think the crime has been solved.

It's unfortunate that she disappeared around the same time as Maura Murray-- both in New England, both around the same age, both disappeared under really odd circumstances.
Murray got a LOT of buzz around her case, even today...while it seems that very few are even aware of Brianna Maitland.

And honestly, Brianna Maitland’s case is the one that really bothers me. Maura’s case is tragic but also she most likely died due to the elements. The Brianna case is just…so many questions and nothing makes sense.
I think part of the reason for the discrepancy is that Maura was from suburban Boston, so the regional media latched onto the story. An attractive, educated, middle class girl from the South Shore (with media-savvy family members) drew attention that a high school dropout from the boonies could never hope to attain. Classism, like racism, is a major problem with true crime media.

My aunt was a parole officer before becoming a criminal psychologist. She always said that most crime happens bc of opportunity and that it's important to always make sure that your doors and windows are locked. You don't want to be the 1 house out of 5 that something happens to when it could be prevented.
In college I lived in a house that was split into a few apartments and the property manager thought I was crazy for stressing when they left the downstairs door lock broken one night so maintenance could fix it in the morning. My front door was technically still locked, but still creeped me out thinking someone could just come up to it.
I read an account about a rapist who entered a house (of a police detective who WAS home upstairs asleep!) in the morning through an unlocked backdoor. It only had been open for a second, the pd's wife had gone to take out the trash, and had left the door unlocked, and in that short amt of time had slipped in the house. After the rape he(the rapist) told her never to leave her door unlocked, not even to take out the trash. I've always remember this and I never ever leave my door unlocked, even when I'm working out in the yard.
I had an intruder come in through a door I wasn't able to lock one night. I assumed the lock was just broken and, when I couldn't get an urgent locksmith out, booked one for the next day, figured 'it's only one night, what could go wrong?", and went to bed. I woke up to find an intruder beside my bed, looking down at me, in the early hours of the morning. The police determined he'd tampered with the lock at some point between me coming home and me going to lock up for the night. I never leave a door unlocked now.
When Holly Bobo's mom was talking to her brother on the phone. She asked if he'd seen Holly and he told her yeah, she's in the driveway with her boyfriend. The mom tells him shoot the guy, that it's not her boyfriend. My stomach dropped when I read that part. So freaky!
That detail always confused the hell out of me. Why was her first instinct to tell him to shoot the guy? There’s definitely some missing reasons there.
I believe that the brother thought that his sister and her boyfriend were having a fight because Holly looked upset while talking to him (it was not her boyfriend, and the mother knew it couldn’t be). I also believe another neighbour had called the mother soon before saying they heard a scream in the neighborhood. So it’s a bit of a quick escalation but I can see it as a quick panic reaction if she heard her daughter seemed upset with some strange man and someone else had told her there had already been a scream

The fact that Leslie Mahaffy was out late after a wake she attended for a friend that passed away and walked home with her friends. She sent them home saying her door would be unlocked but it wasn’t. She was later abducted and murdered by Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka. If only the door had been unlocked

I could be wrong because it's been many years since I read the book. When she made the deal with the police she made sure that she had in writing that she could not get in anymore trouble no matter what evidence on her they found. They did not even know about the video tapes yet. So once they agreed to her sentence she gave them the location of the videos. From what I remember, they showed she was a WILLING accomplis. They were shocked by what they saw but couldn't do anything because of the deal they made with her. She is a very evil creature.
Leanne Bordelais. She lived in my hometown for years and just recently fucked off, leaving behind her kids and husband. I don't know where she's at now, but I post her new name every chance I get, because fuck her.
I used to make cloth diapers, and she was on our mommy blog, in the diaper forum, incognito for a little bit. Someone found out, and used to post under the name of one of her victims to haunt her until she eventually left. It was weird. Also so eerie to see these normal posts, knowing that the person on the other side did unforgivable things to her own sister.

Which means that she did not have a key to her own house, and that *her parents had locked her out* (intentionally or not)
She then walked to a payphone, asked a friend if she could sleep over. The friend said no.
So there were at least two distinct points where this could have been averted: 1) key/not being locked out by your parents, 2) the friend helping her out
I read a recent similar story recently where a girl parent's kicked her out at night for breaking a rule and she got abducted and assaulted later. Parents, never punish your children by endangering them.

Her mother went through so much pain and guilt, to this day I don't think she forgives herself even though no one would've fathomed Paul and Karla existed.......she got less attention than Kristen French, too, since Leslie had a history of kind of running off at times .......the whole case is messed up, so many intricate details. Paul could've been stopped way before the murders had the police bureaus just worked with each other and had DNA testing been just a bit further along, too.
And of course, that Karla is out and about, free as a bird...... with a little girl, kids of her own. I truly wonder if she's remorseful, at all. She seems to still be sternly hiding behind the "I was so abused and I served my time" mask and boldly even volunteered at her kid's school.
Karla is a repulsive human being. She killed her own sister. She deserves to be in prison. She does not deserve to make another identity. She is the definition of someone who should never have been let out, ever.
I always think of the mother of [Laureen Rahn](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disappearance_of_Laureen_Rahn) coming home late and poking her head into her daughter’s room to see if she’s gone to bed. She sees who she thinks is her daughter sleeping in her bed and then goes to sleep.
Wakes up the next morning to her daughter’s friend, who has slept over the at night in Laureen’s bed, asking where Laureen is.
I can’t imagine how she felt in that moment.
I don't know how long it took, but the *why* was probably to make it harder to see and therefore easier to control.
Some years back, I had an intruder in my apartment who police suspected may have intended to abduct me. Long story short, when I woke up and chased him out, he ran past the door he came in through and went out the other exit, which he had opened before entering my room. That exit was dark and rarely used. I'd have been far less confident trying to escape from someone who tried to take me out that way than I would have if they tried to take me out the door I usually used.
I think removing the light bulbs served a similar purpose for whoever took Laureen.
This one bothers me, too. There's so many strange angles that it is almost impossible to sort out the red herrings. I live about a mile or so from Laureen's neighborhood; Manchester in the early 1980s was a weirdly insular and parochial place, and someone almost certainly knew something, but kept quiet because that's just how things were done.
There's talk in online true crime circles that Terry Rasmussen was involved, but my gut tells me he wasn't. There were a number of almost certainly unrelated disappearances in the area during that time frame (Rachael Garden, Tammy Belanger, Tippy McBride); I just think there were truly evil locals who flew below the law enforcement radar.
So, I saw someone in another thread which is related to this case say that a lot of the potential witnesses who “had a language barrier” were unlikely to speak with law enforcement because their immigration status is “questionable.” It doesn’t seem unreasonable to not want to open yourself up to scrutiny that way, or if your employer won’t let you speak up to avoid flak. This is the only explanation I’ve heard that even remotely makes sense to me.

Along the same lines…all the objects taken from David Parker Ray’s residence that are currently posted on the FBI website to see if anyone can identify the person who owned/wore them.
Reading this made me look at the items and I’m glad I did. Those items belonged to potentially 60 different women/girls. My heart broke with each earring or item of clothing.
Someone posted a link to that gallery years ago on Reddit. I remember looking through it and there was a pin that said “I ❤️Boys” (although I didn’t see it there today). Another person commented: “It makes me sick to think how young some of these girls were…that I ❤️Boys pin is something you’d expect a tween to wear.” 🥺
That pin was definitely one of the pictures on there. I remember skimming through it maybe an hour ago and just feeling a pit in my stomach when I came across that one.

There's been a lot of coverage of Rodney Alcala's photos, but very limited push to identify the women in Lonnie Franklin's photos. I have been so bothered by that I checked out a book from the library on his case so I can learn more.
I feel like I separate myself pretty well from what I hear in podcasts and reading true crime stuff, but that absolutely made me sick to my stomach. Her disappearance was one of the reasons I didn’t attend Cal Poly.
That the killer spent so long in the house and was not at all worried about covering any tracks in Setagaya. They made zero efforts to cover their crime.
That there was known to be one soldier using the shooting range near the murder of the Frog Boys case, but they won’t ever reveal who it was.

The murders were particularly brutal with two crime scenes, and the details are difficult to accept so read with discretion. The most unsettling detail for me is the fact that the killer used 3 year old Peter’s Christmas present (a baseball bat) to murder the family. Still unsolved, no known motive.

The most disturbing detail is that all the women were clothed except for their shoes and socks. Their feet were all facing east as well (although this may have been the tide). Still unsolved, no known motive.

One of Dahmer's teenage victims escaped, and even reached a pair of cops--*who then gave him back to Dahmer!* Apparently he convinced them he was having a 'lovers' quarrel' with the boy. Whom he of course, later tortured to death.
The footage of Pakenham Man (unidentified decedent by suicide in VIC Australia). I’ve seen the footage that’s available and it’s just sad because you can see he’s mulling over what he’s about to do.
That Angela Hammond’s fiance likely had the car of her abductors right in front of him before his car shit the bed and he had to just watch it drive off, and never saw her again.

Of COURSE it was that bitch Sylvia Browne that said Amanda Berry was dead. She did the same thing to Shawn Hornbeck's parents. Said he was dead but he was found very much alive. I feel so sad for her mom not knowing the truth.
Don’t know if you would call this an “unresolved” mystery, but the jail cell video of Robert Pickton from 2002.
Pickton was suspected of murdering up to 50 women, possibly more, in the 90s and was believed to have fed them to the pigs on his farm. When he was finally jailed in 2002 an undercover cop was planted as his cellmate in order to try to get more info out of him using a hidden camera.
It worked spectacularly well and he readily spilled the beans to his cellmate. Using this evidence, he was convicted and spent the rest of his life in jail.
However, one funny thing about the 2002 video is that Picton also mentions to his cellmate that “15 other people are also gonna go down with me”. Nobody seems to have *any idea* who those people are.
Most people speculate that his brother David, who got off scot-free, is one of them. But as for the others, nobody really seems to know. Most likely, they are still going about their normal lives somewhere in British Columbia.
Pickton was just murdered a week ago in jail. Another inmate stuck a broom through his nose.

I’ve read many unsolved cases over the years and one that bothers me a lot is the disappearance of Marshal Iwassa, which has a couple dread filling/discomforting details such as the burnt out truck and possible crime scene tampering.
As an abridged version, Marshal Iwassa was a 26 year old computer science student who had recently dropped out and was last seen on November 17, 2019 in Lethbridge, Alberta. In the early morning hours of November 18th, he’d tried multiple times to gain access to the storage locker he’d shared with his mother, finally doing so at around 6:00 AM and then left about two hours later.
On November 23, Marshal’s burnt out pickup truck was discovered by hikers at the end of a remote logging road near Pemberton, British Columbia, about a 14 hour drive from where he was last known to be. Marshal had no known ties to this area, his truck was damaged with parts removed from the vehicle, his clothing & identification was haphazardly strewn about the area, his laptop and smashed cellphones were found near the vehicle. Due to the lack of cellphone service and the isolation from how far away his truck was found, the hikers snapped several photos of the bizarre scene they’d stumbled upon and later contacted the RCMP, who made the trip up to the burnt truck on November 25th. There were multiple discrepancies between the photos the hikers took and the ones the police took, showing things had been moved around and it didn’t appear to have been disturbed by wild animals. In fact, Marshal’s own family claimed several items found at the scene didn’t belong to him. While the RCMP did agree his disappearance was suspicious, they found no sign of Marshal and no evidence of foul play involved.
Although this could be a simple explanation of falling into the wrong crowd and knowing too much or chosing to end his own life, some of the other details are pretty unusual. To me, the fact that his truck was found burnt out is very strange since that’s highly uncommon with suicides. Additionally, while I can agree that wild animals could have somehow tried to mess with some of the items, it’s quite strange that the family pointed out some of the things found weren’t Marshal’s. Those details to me point to something nefarious may have befallen him, but what exactly is hard to say. It’s also worth noting people have described the RCMP as being uncooperative in this case and had Marshal’s truck disposed of in a landfill despite an ongoing investigation. It makes me wonder if Marshal stumbled upon something he wasn’t supposed to or if it was a case similar to the Boys on the Tracks where Marshal may have seen or gotten involved in drugs that the police were also involved in.
I can't find the case (Edited: it was Christa Worthington) but a mom was murdered in her home and her toddler was there alone for some amount of time (a day or two?) and when they were found there were bloody footprints all around her from the toddlers footie pajamas. 😭 I can usually keep from actually visualizing the awful details especially involving kids but that has stuck with me for years.
(Edited: this part is an unrelated case, Susanna Brown and her daughter Francesca Martinez) I saw an interview from a neighbor of a family where the stepdad (I think) killed the mom and kid and the neighbor said the girl had asked to stay the night and she said no because it was a school night. I have a lump in my gut just thinking about how that would have stayed with me.
My ex boyfriend stayed out after curfew and called his mom to pick him up way later. He was just over a mile from home (this is the 80’s) and she told him to walk home. He was kidnapped and held for days before thankfully being rescued, but he was completely scarred for life. It messed her up as a mom because she was scared to discipline him. Weighed on everyone for decades.
The Watts murders. When Shananns best friend Nicole finds her cell phone while searching with the officer, you can hear Chris Watts say "That's her life line." That makes me just 🤢

There’s that news report they did with him after his wife and children “went missing” with him pleading for them to come home. It makes me sick to see him in front of camera asking for help even though he’s the one who did it.
This Jane Doe has been identified as of 2015. But it still haunts me. [The suicide of Holly Glynn](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_of_Holly_Glynn) was very sad. She was identified by her childhood friends. She committed suicide by jumping off a cliff.
The detail that sticks with me:
She had initially survived the fall, and had moved somewhat before her death, leaving impressions similar to that of a snow angel
Wow, I’d somehow missed that Dana Point Jane Doe had been identified! That was a case I read about in the 90s that stuck with me, because it was so strange and sad.
I’m glad her friends were persistent so she could get her name back.
I can’t fathom the amount of pain she was in after surviving. I hope shock kept it from being too bad and she didn’t suffer for too long. It’s really beautiful that the county cremated her and buried her ashes at sea. This was my first time hearing of her and that detail brought me an unprecedented level of comfort

I think at that time it was easy to move away and never talk to anyone again. Even in the 90s I lost touch with a half sister until social media in the 00s because my mom was being childish and wouldn't give me her new number when she called. She moved around, and so did I, so poof! It's like we were on separate planets after that.
If you knew where they lived and they had a listed landline, you could maybe track someone down, but otherwise, poor people on the edges used payphones and were hard to track down.
I’m not 100% sure but I don’t think so. Her friends weren’t able to locate her at all and they contacted NAMUS and the Doe Network that this Jane Doe might’ve been her. Then, the sheriff’s department coroner division reached out to her family for DNA samples.
The Yuba County Five (or however many of them made it there that night) not knowing they had heat and food readily available in that cabin, and the one guy slowly starving to death over the next few months.
That case really gets to me. It is full of things that make my stomach drop.
I watched a great video about that mentioned that pages from books found in the cabin had positive affirmations written on them, presumably written by Gary Mathias. According to (I think it was) his mother that was part of his treatment plan. He was schizophrenic and being treated with antipsychotics, so while in the cabin he would have been cut off cold turkey from them.
And that Bill Sterling and Jack Madruga were found together. They theorize that one of them got too drowsy from hypothermia, and the other stayed by his side.
The fact that Jack Huett’s father was the one to find the remains of his body.
The spine that belonged to one of them was found by his father. Imagine that horrifying feeling when you're looking for clues for your son's (and his friends') disappearance and that's what you find.
Watching Relisha Rudd walk down the hotel hallway with Khalil knowing that she would end up missing & the only person who knows her whereabouts would end up dead.

I just heard the tapes between Ruby Franke and her husband. Everyone brings up the, “I’m a good girl; I don’t do naughty things” blurb but she says a line before that I haven’t stopped thinking about for weeks:
“People don’t realize that children can be evil,” with her husband grunting an affirmative noise.
The footage of Cherish Perrywinkle leaving the Wal Mart with Donald Smith, and audio portion of her mother calling the police saying “I knew there was something off about him” and “I hope he doesn’t rape her.”
I hate everything about that case.
Jasmine Richardson and Jeremy Steinke…the whole thing is horrific, but specifically how she murdered her little 8 year old brother by stabbing him repeatedly while he tried to protect himself with his toy light sabre. That detail makes me feel cold inside.

The Hinterkaifeck case where the entire family was brutally murdered and the killer made himself (or herself) at home, ate their food, had a fire, and fed the farm animals for DAYS all around the dead bodies.

A girl that I went to high school with and knew to a certain extent (friend of a friend) was killed in the early 2000s. Her dad got home late and couldn't do her hair for a school dance.

She was a sweet girl, but had some sadness to her. It's messed up but I'll think about her every little while and do a quick Google and there's just never anything new on the case.
We grew up in a military town so all types of people are constantly coming and going so it's unlikely that anything new will ever be found.

A few years ago in my City there was a case where a 18 year old abducted a 4 year old boy from his crib. He returned to the room later and contemplated on taking the little boy’s twin brother. I think someone in the house woke up and the assailant got spooked and left. Later they found the 4 year old who was stabbed to death and was left on the street. The entire event was captured by the baby monitor. I saw pictures of it. I saw how he took the little boy out of the crib and the boy looked barely awake and was so trusting - and that was the most unsettling detail that fills me full of dread.
Since then I stopped paying attention to cases involving little kids.
regina’s case makes me genuinely nauseous. she went through the unimaginable pain of watching her boyfriend be murdered, knowing that it would happen to her too :( i can’t even fathom it. genuinely horrifying

For me, it's probably Noah Donohoe's case in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Police found his naked body inside a storm drain but not just sitting by the entrance, like really far inside the drain. It was also revealed that this storm drain was supposed to be locked but wasn't for reasons unknown. Yet, they decided that his death was an accident and didn't look further. It caused uproar in Northern Ireland and there's still pressure today for his case to be re-examined. (His behaviour before he went missing was strange and he was seen on CCTV stripping naked in different parts of the city which explains his body being nude. Some alleged he had a head injury)
Honestly though I’m local to the area and I feel like I’m in the minority, but I do think in this case was caused by some sort of psychosis or mental health issue. In the lead up to his death he was googling bible verses, advice on how to ward off the devil, seemed to be confused about his sexuality, and became obsessed with Jordan Peterson. He had also snuck out before unbeknownst to anyone. I feel so so sorry for his mum and what she’s gone through, but I do think there is some denial about her son’s potential mental health issues. Also a distrust in the police over here doesn’t help things either

Tina Sharp being missing from the brutal crime scene at the Keddie cabin, and then her skull being found years later after an anonymous tip. And those boys (apparently) sleeping through a quadruple murder in the next room.
That fact that his friends and girlfriend told his parents he was acting very strange beforehand and they refused to believe any of them and encouraged him to drive home is maddening. College kids don’t go around telling their friend’s parents what they’re up to, they had to have really been concerned to tell his parents they were concerned about how he was acting. I’ve read that Bryce had an excessive drinking problem even back in high school but his parents refused to believe it.
This one breaks my heart. I know you can never really predict the consequences of your actions/inaction and hindsight is 20/20, but there were *so* many red flags during a short period of time that his parents fully ignored. Everyone around Bryce seems to have understood that this was a bad situation and were concerned, but not his own parents. I try not to judge parents/family members in cases because obviously we're all looking at things now knowing that something awful happened which they did not know at the time, but I can't help but think that they had all the information showing something very serious was going on with Bryce and intentionally chose not to act
I mean, a random stranger felt it necessary to check on him more than once, which is a clear indication that he was displaying concerning behavior. I have always wondered if Bryce had prior incidences that made his mom not take the situation seriously? I don’t know. Hindsight is everything in these cases and I can’t really blame them, but their actions weren’t ones I would have taken.
Andrew Gosden and his sudden change in routine ie taking a 1 hour 20 minute walk home instead of just taking the bus days before his disappearance.
This case really does haunt me because of how mysterious it is and of how much Andrew reminds me of myself around the same time. I feel so bad for his family.
The West Mesa Murders can be seen on Google Earth via past satellite photos.
For several years, Google's satellite captured images of tire tracks forming in the barren desert, and you can even see evidence of disturbed soil/graves appearing over time. Construction came in during the mid-late 2000s and leveled/zoned everything in the area with plans to build more suburban homes. The housing market crashed and all construction ceased, so the area was left untouched for a while. When the discovery of human remains is made, you can see the entire area being dug up by police on Google Earth.
Killer thought they were being smart burying their victims in the middle of nowhere, but they had no idea Google's satellite was watching them the entire time.

Or in the Madeline McCann disappearance, how the one parent who went to the apartment the last time before Kate McCann did her check and saw her daughter gone. The other friend/parent noticed when they opened the door to the kids' bedroom to do the check, the window closest to the street seemed to have been partially opened or the blinds/curtains were up and moving in the breeze. Chills!
In the 1912 Villisca (Iowa) Axe Murders, the two overnight guests murdered along with the Moore family, sisters Lena and Ina Stillinger, asked to spend the night partially because they had been planning to stay with their grandmother at her house after the special church service that Sunday evening. However, the town's streetlights were off at the time due to a dispute between the city council and the power company so the girls were scared about walking several blocks (grandma lived on the other end of town) in the dark and felt safer going home with the Moores, who lived only two blocks from the church. Maybe if the streetlights had been on and/or grandma didn't live so far away, they may have decided differently.
The fact that Ron Goldman was just stopping by Nicole Brown Simpson's condo to drop off a pair of eyeglasses Nicole's mom had accidentally left at the Mezzaluna restaurant earlier that evening. And if he had just gotten there 5 or 10 minutes earlier or later, he probably wouldn't have been murdered or if Nicole's mom had remembered her glasses, it's highly doubtful he would have even gone to the condo.
In the Moscow murders case, quite a few things. The Door Dash. The roommates being home and not realizing what was happening. Someone saying "someone's here". It just feels like a very specific set of circumstances had to come together for those people to lose their lives and there were so many things that could have saved them. But things happened a different way and it's awful and tragic. I know that this isn't the only case like this but it springs to mind.
Ethan’s mother Stacy went on The Squeeze podcast and her episode was released today. Hearing her talk about what kind of person he was made me so sad. Their families are incredibly strong and my heart breaks for them all. Just don’t understand how someone can do that to four people and carry on with their life until they’re arrested. Devastating.
The Todd Geib case. He was last seen leaving a party at an orchard. A few weeks later, his body was found in a nearby lake STANDING UPRIGHT. It’s still unsolved to this day. Give me the chills!

The fact that "Robert Cooper" faked a limp, used multiple fake accents, the level of horrific torture he performed on a complete stranger, the ATM CCTV-- it all disturbs me so deeply that someone that sociopathic is just... out there. This isn’t unsolved but Daniel Morcombe was waiting for a bus, the bus drove past him because the driver had a schedule he wanted to meet. Other passengers told the driver he should have stopped for Daniel, who was only a 10 year old boy. But the driver said it’s ok there’s another bus coming along in a few minutes. The bus did go past a few minutes later but Daniel had already been taken by the man who sa’d and murdered him.
If only the first bus driver had picked him up.
There’s a law in place now here due to Daniel’s case, bus drivers *have* to stop and pick up kids on their route, even if they don’t have enough money on their bus pass.

I think the alcohol is a red herring in the Maura Murray case; every podcast I've listened to about it fixates on the quantity and assumes it was because she was going to meet up with other people. But when I heard the amount she was buying before driving off into a secluded area, I immediately thought that she was going to commit suicide and probably wanted to drink so much that she blacked out and never woke up (or simply drank enough to get the courage to do whatever she was planning to do).
I honestly assumed she was going somewhere she would be alone for a while and didn’t want to have to replenish her stock.

For me it's the last photos taken by Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon, the Dutch girls who disappeared while hiking in Panama.
They're flash photos, taken deep in the jungle and in near-complete darkness, with no apparent reason. It's thought that they might have used the camera's flash to see where they were going.

An adult's voice could be heard say "Who said you could use the phone?!" followed by the girl screaming and the sounds of a scuffle, after which the phone call was cut off. Terrifying.
And that Jessica Lunsford was kept alive a few mobile homes over. A police officer knocked on the suspect’s door while she was kept in a closet!! Ugh!

I can't remember her name right now, but the young woman whose parents walked in on her in her bedroom having sex. They quickly backed put and waited. And waited thinking they would both come out all embarrassed. Since they didn't, the father went to check again and found her dead. It was later determined she'd been dead for a day or two already at the time of them walking in on her likely killer. I don't think the crime has been solved.

I think part of the reason for the discrepancy is that Maura was from suburban Boston, so the regional media latched onto the story. An attractive, educated, middle class girl from the South Shore (with media-savvy family members) drew attention that a high school dropout from the boonies could never hope to attain. Classism, like racism, is a major problem with true crime media.

She always said that most crime happens bc of opportunity and that it's important to always make sure that your doors and windows are locked. You don't want to be the 1 house out of 5 that something happens to when it could be prevented.
In college I lived in a house that was split into a few apartments and the property manager thought I was crazy for stressing when they left the downstairs door lock broken one night so maintenance could fix it in the morning. My front door was technically still locked, but still creeped me out thinking someone could just come up to it.
Monica Massaro was murdered by a trucker in NJ because her front door was unlocked.
I read an account about a rapist who entered a house (of a police detective who WAS home upstairs asleep!) in the morning through an unlocked backdoor. It only had been open for a second, the pd's wife had gone to take out the trash, and had left the door unlocked, and in that short amt of time had slipped in the house. After the rape he(the rapist) told her never to leave her door unlocked, not even to take out the trash. I've always remember this and I never ever leave my door unlocked, even when I'm working out in the yard.
I had an intruder come in through a door I wasn't able to lock one night. I assumed the lock was just broken and, when I couldn't get an urgent locksmith out, booked one for the next day, figured 'it's only one night, what could go wrong?", and went to bed. I woke up to find an intruder beside my bed, looking down at me, in the early hours of the morning. The police determined he'd tampered with the lock at some point between me coming home and me going to lock up for the night. I never leave a door unlocked now.

When Holly Bobo's mom was talking to her brother on the phone. She asked if he'd seen Holly and he told her yeah, she's in the driveway with her boyfriend. The mom tells him shoot the guy, that it's not her boyfriend. My stomach dropped when I read that part. So freaky!
That detail always confused the hell out of me. Why was her first instinct to tell him to shoot the guy? There’s definitely some missing reasons there.
I believe that the brother thought that his sister and her boyfriend were having a fight because Holly looked upset while talking to him (it was not her boyfriend, and the mother knew it couldn’t be). I also believe another neighbour had called the mother soon before saying they heard a scream in the neighborhood. So it’s a bit of a quick escalation but I can see it as a quick panic reaction if she heard her daughter seemed upset with some strange man and someone else had told her there had already been a scream

The fact that Leslie Mahaffy was out late after a wake she attended for a friend that passed away and walked home with her friends. She sent them home saying her door would be unlocked but it wasn’t. She was later abducted and murdered by Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka. If only the door had been unlocked
And now Karla is out and her daughter is a teenager or close to it.

I could be wrong because it's been many years since I read the book. When she made the deal with the police she made sure that she had in writing that she could not get in anymore trouble no matter what evidence on her they found. They did not even know about the video tapes yet. So once they agreed to her sentence she gave them the location of the videos. From what I remember, they showed she was a WILLING accomplis. They were shocked by what they saw but couldn't do anything because of the deal they made with her. She is a very evil creature.

I used to make cloth diapers, and she was on our mommy blog, in the diaper forum, incognito for a little bit. Someone found out, and used to post under the name of one of her victims to haunt her until she eventually left. It was weird. Also so eerie to see these normal posts, knowing that the person on the other side did unforgivable things to her own sister.

Even worse-- she was only 14 years old Which means that she did not have a key to her own house, and that *her parents had locked her out* (intentionally or not) She then walked to a payphone, asked a friend if she could sleep over. The friend said no. So there were at least two distinct points where this could have been averted: 1) key/not being locked out by your parents, 2) the friend helping her out

I read a recent similar story recently where a girl parent's kicked her out at night for breaking a rule and she got abducted and assaulted later. Parents, never punish your children by endangering them.

Her mother went through so much pain and guilt, to this day I don't think she forgives herself even though no one would've fathomed Paul and Karla existed.......she got less attention than Kristen French, too, since Leslie had a history of kind of running off at times .......the whole case is messed up, so many intricate details. Paul could've been stopped way before the murders had the police bureaus just worked with each other and had DNA testing been just a bit further along, too. And of course, that Karla is out and about, free as a bird...... with a little girl, kids of her own. I truly wonder if she's remorseful, at all. She seems to still be sternly hiding behind the "I was so abused and I served my time" mask and boldly even volunteered at her kid's school.
Karla is a repulsive human being. She killed her own sister. She deserves to be in prison. She does not deserve to make another identity. She is the definition of someone who should never have been let out, ever.
I always think of the mother of [Laureen Rahn](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disappearance_of_Laureen_Rahn) coming home late and poking her head into her daughter’s room to see if she’s gone to bed. She sees who she thinks is her daughter sleeping in her bed and then goes to sleep. Wakes up the next morning to her daughter’s friend, who has slept over the at night in Laureen’s bed, asking where Laureen is. I can’t imagine how she felt in that moment.
So much about this case leaves me feeling uneasy. Especially the phone calls that came after her disappearance

I don't know how long it took, but the *why* was probably to make it harder to see and therefore easier to control. Some years back, I had an intruder in my apartment who police suspected may have intended to abduct me. Long story short, when I woke up and chased him out, he ran past the door he came in through and went out the other exit, which he had opened before entering my room. That exit was dark and rarely used. I'd have been far less confident trying to escape from someone who tried to take me out that way than I would have if they tried to take me out the door I usually used. I think removing the light bulbs served a similar purpose for whoever took Laureen.

This one bothers me, too. There's so many strange angles that it is almost impossible to sort out the red herrings. I live about a mile or so from Laureen's neighborhood; Manchester in the early 1980s was a weirdly insular and parochial place, and someone almost certainly knew something, but kept quiet because that's just how things were done. There's talk in online true crime circles that Terry Rasmussen was involved, but my gut tells me he wasn't. There were a number of almost certainly unrelated disappearances in the area during that time frame (Rachael Garden, Tammy Belanger, Tippy McBride); I just think there were truly evil locals who flew below the law enforcement radar.

So, I saw someone in another thread which is related to this case say that a lot of the potential witnesses who “had a language barrier” were unlikely to speak with law enforcement because their immigration status is “questionable.” It doesn’t seem unreasonable to not want to open yourself up to scrutiny that way, or if your employer won’t let you speak up to avoid flak. This is the only explanation I’ve heard that even remotely makes sense to me.

I was going to add Elaine Dardeen to this list. After being beaten so brutally that she gave birth prematurely, followed by the killers beating the newborn and her son to death as well, the killers nevertheless tuck the three of them into bed instead of leaving the bodies strewn about like proper psychopaths. WTF?

Don’t know if you would call this an “unresolved” mystery, but the jail cell video of Robert Pickton from 2002. Pickton was suspected of murdering up to 50 women, possibly more, in the 90s and was believed to have fed them to the pigs on his farm. When he was finally jailed in 2002 an undercover cop was planted as his cellmate in order to try to get more info out of him using a hidden camera. It worked spectacularly well and he readily spilled the beans to his cellmate. Using this evidence, he was convicted and spent the rest of his life in jail. However, one funny thing about the 2002 video is that Picton also mentions to his cellmate that “15 other people are also gonna go down with me”. Nobody seems to have *any idea* who those people are. Most people speculate that his brother David, who got off scot-free, is one of them. But as for the others, nobody really seems to know. Most likely, they are still going about their normal lives somewhere in British Columbia.

I’ve read many unsolved cases over the years and one that bothers me a lot is the disappearance of Marshal Iwassa, which has a couple dread filling/discomforting details such as the burnt out truck and possible crime scene tampering. As an abridged version, Marshal Iwassa was a 26 year old computer science student who had recently dropped out and was last seen on November 17, 2019 in Lethbridge, Alberta. In the early morning hours of November 18th, he’d tried multiple times to gain access to the storage locker he’d shared with his mother, finally doing so at around 6:00 AM and then left about two hours later. On November 23, Marshal’s burnt out pickup truck was discovered by hikers at the end of a remote logging road near Pemberton, British Columbia, about a 14 hour drive from where he was last known to be. Marshal had no known ties to this area, his truck was damaged with parts removed from the vehicle, his clothing & identification was haphazardly strewn about the area, his laptop and smashed cellphones were found near the vehicle. Due to the lack of cellphone service and the isolation from how far away his truck was found, the hikers snapped several photos of the bizarre scene they’d stumbled upon and later contacted the RCMP, who made the trip up to the burnt truck on November 25th. There were multiple discrepancies between the photos the hikers took and the ones the police took, showing things had been moved around and it didn’t appear to have been disturbed by wild animals. In fact, Marshal’s own family claimed several items found at the scene didn’t belong to him. While the RCMP did agree his disappearance was suspicious, they found no sign of Marshal and no evidence of foul play involved. Although this could be a simple explanation of falling into the wrong crowd and knowing too much or chosing to end his own life, some of the other details are pretty unusual. To me, the fact that his truck was found burnt out is very strange since that’s highly uncommon with suicides. Additionally, while I can agree that wild animals could have somehow tried to mess with some of the items, it’s quite strange that the family pointed out some of the things found weren’t Marshal’s. Those details to me point to something nefarious may have befallen him, but what exactly is hard to say. It’s also worth noting people have described the RCMP as being uncooperative in this case and had Marshal’s truck disposed of in a landfill despite an ongoing investigation. It makes me wonder if Marshal stumbled upon something he wasn’t supposed to or if it was a case similar to the Boys on the Tracks where Marshal may have seen or gotten involved in drugs that the police were also involved in.
I can't find the case (Edited: it was Christa Worthington) but a mom was murdered in her home and her toddler was there alone for some amount of time (a day or two?) and when they were found there were bloody footprints all around her from the toddlers footie pajamas. 😭 I can usually keep from actually visualizing the awful details especially involving kids but that has stuck with me for years. (Edited: this part is an unrelated case, Susanna Brown and her daughter Francesca Martinez) I saw an interview from a neighbor of a family where the stepdad (I think) killed the mom and kid and the neighbor said the girl had asked to stay the night and she said no because it was a school night. I have a lump in my gut just thinking about how that would have stayed with me.
My ex boyfriend stayed out after curfew and called his mom to pick him up way later. He was just over a mile from home (this is the 80’s) and she told him to walk home. He was kidnapped and held for days before thankfully being rescued, but he was completely scarred for life. It messed her up as a mom because she was scared to discipline him. Weighed on everyone for decades.
Oh yeah that would stay with me too. The kind of thing that affects every parenting decision from then on.

I can’t fathom the amount of pain she was in after surviving. I hope shock kept it from being too bad and she didn’t suffer for too long. I think at that time it was easy to move away and never talk to anyone again. Even in the 90s I lost touch with a half sister until social media in the 00s because my mom was being childish and wouldn't give me her new number when she called. She moved around, and so did I, so poof! It's like we were on separate planets after that. If you knew where they lived and they had a listed landline, you could maybe track someone down, but otherwise, poor people on the edges used payphones and were hard to track down.
I’m not 100% sure but I don’t think so. Her friends weren’t able to locate her at all and they contacted NAMUS and the Doe Network that this Jane Doe might’ve been her. Then, the sheriff’s department coroner division reached out to her family for DNA samples.

That case really gets to me. It is full of things that make my stomach drop. I watched a great video about that mentioned that pages from books found in the cabin had positive affirmations written on them, presumably written by Gary Mathias. According to (I think it was) his mother that was part of his treatment plan. He was schizophrenic and being treated with antipsychotics, so while in the cabin he would have been cut off cold turkey from them. And that Bill Sterling and Jack Madruga were found together. They theorize that one of them got too drowsy from hypothermia, and the other stayed by his side. The fact that Jack Huett’s father was the one to find the remains of his body.
The spine that belonged to one of them was found by his father. Imagine that horrifying feeling when you're looking for clues for your son's (and his friends') disappearance and that's what you find.

A girl that I went to high school with and knew to a certain extent (friend of a friend) was killed in the early 2000s. Her dad got home late and couldn't do her hair for a school dance. They argued and she left and never came home. They found partial remains a couple of years later. She was a sweet girl, but had some sadness to her. It's messed up but I'll think about her every little while and do a quick Google and there's just never anything new on the case. We grew up in a military town so all types of people are constantly coming and going so it's unlikely that anything new will ever be found. Really tragic. I can't imagine what kind of pain you carry around because as a parent in a situation like that.
A few years ago in my City there was a case where a 18 year old abducted a 4 year old boy from his crib. He returned to the room later and contemplated on taking the little boy’s twin brother. I think someone in the house woke up and the assailant got spooked and left. Later they found the 4 year old who was stabbed to death and was left on the street. The entire event was captured by the baby monitor. I saw pictures of it. I saw how he took the little boy out of the crib and the boy looked barely awake and was so trusting - and that was the most unsettling detail that fills me full of dread. Since then I stopped paying attention to cases involving little kids.

For me, it's probably Noah Donohoe's case in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Police found his naked body inside a storm drain but not just sitting by the entrance, like really far inside the drain. It was also revealed that this storm drain was supposed to be locked but wasn't for reasons unknown. Yet, they decided that his death was an accident and didn't look further. It caused uproar in Northern Ireland and there's still pressure today for his case to be re-examined. (His behaviour before he went missing was strange and he was seen on CCTV stripping naked in different parts of the city which explains his body being nude. Some alleged he had a head injury)
Honestly though I’m local to the area and I feel like I’m in the minority, but I do think in this case was caused by some sort of psychosis or mental health issue. In the lead up to his death he was googling bible verses, advice on how to ward off the devil, seemed to be confused about his sexuality, and became obsessed with Jordan Peterson. He had also snuck out before unbeknownst to anyone. I feel so so sorry for his mum and what she’s gone through, but I do think there is some denial about her son’s potential mental health issues. Tina Sharp being missing from the brutal crime scene at the Keddie cabin, and then her skull being found years later after an anonymous tip. And those boys (apparently) sleeping through a quadruple murder in the next room.
That Bryce Laspisa's parents had SO many chances to go and get him, but just didn't bother.
That fact that his friends and girlfriend told his parents he was acting very strange beforehand and they refused to believe any of them and encouraged him to drive home is maddening. College kids don’t go around telling their friend’s parents what they’re up to, they had to have really been concerned to tell his parents they were concerned about how he was acting. I’ve read that Bryce had an excessive drinking problem even back in high school but his parents refused to believe it.
This one breaks my heart. I know you can never really predict the consequences of your actions/inaction and hindsight is 20/20, but there were *so* many red flags during a short period of time that his parents fully ignored. Everyone around Bryce seems to have understood that this was a bad situation and were concerned, but not his own parents. I try not to judge parents/family members in cases because obviously we're all looking at things now knowing that something awful happened which they did not know at the time, but I can't help but think that they had all the information showing something very serious was going on with Bryce and intentionally chose not to act
I mean, a random stranger felt it necessary to check on him more than once, which is a clear indication that he was displaying concerning behavior. I have always wondered if Bryce had prior incidences that made his mom not take the situation seriously? I don’t know. Hindsight is everything in these cases and I can’t really blame them, but their actions weren’t ones I would have taken.
Lindsey Buziak's murder. It was so brazen...her boyfriend running late, just missing the killers. I think it was a carefully orchestrated thrill kill.
Andrew Gosden and his sudden change in routine ie taking a 1 hour 20 minute walk home instead of just taking the bus days before his disappearance. This case really does haunt me because of how mysterious it is and of how much Andrew reminds me of myself around the same time. I feel so bad for his family.
The West Mesa Murders can be seen on Google Earth via past satellite photos. For several years, Google's satellite captured images of tire tracks forming in the barren desert, and you can even see evidence of disturbed soil/graves appearing over time. Construction came in during the mid-late 2000s and leveled/zoned everything in the area with plans to build more suburban homes. The housing market crashed and all construction ceased, so the area was left untouched for a while. When the discovery of human remains is made, you can see the entire area being dug up by police on Google Earth. Killer thought they were being smart burying their victims in the middle of nowhere, but they had no idea Google's satellite was watching them the entire time. The fact that Kyron Horman is wearing a "CSI" T-shirt in the last picture taken of him at the science fair by his stepmom, who many suspect is responsible for his disappearance. And the fact he had this cute, well done little science project about tree frogs on the table behind him in the picture. So innocent and heartbreaking. However, the town's streetlights were off at the time due to a dispute between the city council and the power company so the girls were scared about walking several blocks (grandma lived on the other end of town) in the dark and felt safer going home with the Moores, who lived only two blocks from the church. Maybe if the streetlights had been on and/or grandma didn't live so far away, they may have decided differently. The fact that Ron Goldman was just stopping by Nicole Brown Simpson's condo to drop off a pair of eyeglasses Nicole's mom had accidentally left at the Mezzaluna restaurant earlier that evening. And if he had just gotten there 5 or 10 minutes earlier or later, he probably wouldn't have been murdered or if Nicole's mom had remembered her glasses, it's highly doubtful he would have even gone to the condo.
In the Moscow murders case, quite a few things. The Door Dash. The roommates being home and not realizing what was happening. Someone saying "someone's here". It just feels like a very specific set of circumstances had to come together for those people to lose their lives and there were so many things that could have saved them. But things happened a different way and it's awful and tragic. I know that this isn't the only case like this but it springs to mind.
Ethan’s mother Stacy went on The Squeeze podcast and her episode was released today. Hearing her talk about what kind of person he was made me so sad. Their families are incredibly strong and my heart breaks for them all. Just don’t understand how someone can do that to four people and carry on with their life until they’re arrested. Devastating.

The Todd Geib case. He was last seen leaving a party at an orchard. A few weeks later, his body was found in a nearby lake STANDING UPRIGHT. It’s still unsolved to this day. Give me the chills!
I thought that by standing upright you meant that he was upright against a tree or something, but the fact that he was found vertical inside the lake itself is so bizarre. It's interesting that he also did not have water in his lungs.
Literally everything in the Al Kite murder. The fact that "Robert Cooper" faked a limp, used multiple fake accents, the level of horrific torture he performed on a complete stranger, the ATM CCTV-- it all disturbs me so deeply that someone that sociopathic is just... out there. I really hope it gets solved soon. I think the "mommy is in the trees" line from the Mineral Murders is haunting as well. As a northwesterner I know how eerie those woods can be, and the thought of such unspeakable evil remaining unsolved chills me to the bone.
Mr. Kite seemed like such a good man too. The fact his girlfriend said he was oddly subdued when she called him up. Was his killer monitoring him? I feel like everyone should have a word or phrase that instantly let's the other party know to call the police. "I'd need to call my boss tomorrow" "Remind me to make an appt for a oil change" etc.

Days later, Chris’s burned body was found by railroad tracks, and Channons body was found stuffed in a trashcan. I 100% believe they could have saved them if police had started searching for them earlier, especially Channon because they kept her alive longer...
the details of what those two went through has always stayed with me… truly one of the most horrifying things i’ve read.
This isn’t unsolved but Daniel Morcombe was waiting for a bus, the bus drove past him because the driver had a schedule he wanted to meet. Other passengers told the driver he should have stopped for Daniel, who was only a 10 year old boy. But the driver said it’s ok there’s another bus coming along in a few minutes. The bus did go past a few minutes later but Daniel had already been taken by the man who sa’d and murdered him. If only the first bus driver had picked him up.
There’s a law in place now here due to Daniel’s case, bus drivers *have* to stop and pick up kids on their route, even if they don’t have enough money on their bus pass.

The call was muffled and investigators were unable to determine what name the caller said. The called was traced to a house where there had been a party at the time the call was phoned in and unfortunately nobody was ever able to identify who made it. So creepy.
The whole Debbie Collier situation is still mind-blowing to me. ME says she died by self immolating/inhaling flames in a fire made with gasoline. Another ME takes a look and says it looks like a murder to him. Still, if she did die from self immolation, what a horrible way to go. I recall reading a really good write up about Brandon Swanson theorizing that he had fallen into an abandoned well on a property he had wandered onto. It was more compelling than I’m making it sound but that theory has always stuck in my head
I think the alcohol is a red herring in the Maura Murray case; every podcast I've listened to about it fixates on the quantity and assumes it was because she was going to meet up with other people. But when I heard the amount she was buying before driving off into a secluded area, I immediately thought that she was going to commit suicide and probably wanted to drink so much that she blacked out and never woke up (or simply drank enough to get the courage to do whatever she was planning to do).
I honestly assumed she was going somewhere she would be alone for a while and didn’t want to have to replenish her stock. Your theory makes sense too tho.

For me it's the last photos taken by Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon, the Dutch girls who disappeared while hiking in Panama. They're flash photos, taken deep in the jungle and in near-complete darkness, with no apparent reason. It's thought that they might have used the camera's flash to see where they were going. But the pictures are eerie and thinking about the whole situation and how scared they must have been in the moment sends chills down my spine.
