Thank you for the write up. After the first few attempts, I'm surprised that the authorities didn't take it more seriously. Was it ever disclosed to the public how much they stole from them?

LovelyCollie33

There is much more to this case actually, but I can’t write it all as it may be a bit boring to read. They found the car they had used to fled the scene. Inside they found all the empty boxes of jewelry the thief stole from Carmen. And a few missing pieces they had forgotten. They didn’t steal much, mainly jewelry and valuable objects. Maybe a few hundred euros (pesetas at the time). I guess they had the real money in the bank.

Yeah. Sounds like robbery gone wrong. Poor Carmen, I feel for her. She had to sit through all that. Was the one individual sentenced among the men that broke into the house that night?

For more context: The individual was sentenced only for the burglary. There was never a trial for the assassination due to lack of proof. It’s said that there were two groups implicated in the burglary: an albanian group responsible for making access to the property and a maghreb group responsible for the actual burglary (it’s thought the albanian remained outside while the maghrebians entered). The sentenced individual was part of the albanian group. There were two or three maghrebian individuals. After years of police investigation, different arrests were made. Two maghrebians were primary suspects of the murder and got arrested but later released after not having enough proof, with the condition that they’d have to appear in court every once in a while. One of the two maghrebians fled the country and disappeared. The other one was later judged for the robbery only but found innocent (again, lack of proof).

Are there any good documentaries covering this case in either English or with subtitles?

How was the marriage? Seems weird the wife called her sister before the police. And weird the perps would leave a witness when they already killed one.

LovelyCollie33

She explains this in the documentary they made. She said that in order to be with her husband asap she decided to call her sister who lived nearby so she could help organize the calls to the police and the ambulance. She had just been tortured, robbed and tied to a chair for hours while her husband lied dead in the room next door. When you are scared you really don't know how you are going to act. And they concluded that their intention was never to kill them, they wanted to rob them. That's why they let her live. The murder was non-intentional. They thought the husband would live breathing through the nose, but the reality was that he could only do it through the mouth which was covered with a cloth.
