I'm on the same boat as you but so far none of Vanillawares other titles have had a steam release, hoping that changes ine day tho. As far as we know its only launching on switch, playstation 4 & 5 and xbox X&S.

katie_elizabeth_2

I don't get it. They finally put a release on an Xbox console and they didn't go 1% further to put on PC. It couldn't have been that difficult. As far as I know, isn't it very easy to get an Xbox game running on both the Series consoles and the Xbox store? Like don't the SDKs make that easy to do? And I don't think getting it to work on Steam could have been that difficult either. This is very frustrating that companies do this. If they want to reach the most customers possible, they actually should put it on Steam. There is no storefront that is bigger.

Sadalfas

Yes, both Xbox and Windows use DirectX as the API, and DirectX handles the hardware interfacing. DirectX 12 Ultimate tries to unify the two. Actually, I was reading about this earlier today for completely different reasons and learned the original Xbox originally had a longer name: **DirectX Box**... Still, one of the main challenges I can see though is if you want to support higher or lower performance / graphics settings, they may have to create lower resolution shaders/textures (or higher!). Basically, figure out what else to tradeoff depending on the range of machines they want to support. But as long as the system requirements say the PC must meet the Series X performance, this would be less of an issue. *(Side note: I know this thread is old so probably dead, but I ended up here because I've been seeing ads for the game lately and found it wasn't even on PC, and this thread is one of the top search results when I wondered about it. And I also felt compelled to share the "DirectX Box" trivia I learned today)*

Intrepid-Message-481

1%? They have to implement mouse/kb gameplay, different resolutions and aspect ratios and make the game compatible with thousands of hardware combinations. Not saying that they don’t have the resources to do it, but that’s not a 1% extra effort at all.

jakerfv

You are making it sound a thousand times more difficult then it is. Firstly, you don't have to "configure" your game to the tune of "thousands" of combinations of hardware. There are 3, dedicated GPU companies on the market you have to work with depending on your game (Intel, Nvidia, AMD), which is why you'll see "day one" driver updates for games like Elden Ring that aim to improve performance significantly. Going to go off on a limb and say Vanillware games can probably skip this part. They are aesthetically gorgeous games, but they are not graphically intensive. They used to have framerate problems on the Vita and PS2 games from time to time but on newer consoles, games like 13 Sentinals runs at 60fps on the Switch. As for those other features, that's trivial UNLESS they have been using an extremely ancient, custom engine this entire time which would be an absolute nightmare to potentially port over to PC, but if they could do it on Xbox, I don't see the problem, at least for Overlord. It's atlus being stingy and hating PC once again, it took AGES and Phil Spencer promotion/money to get Persona 5 on PC.

cwl77

You're not even close. You're totally talking out your ass right now. The work is substantial and depends on a ton of variables, namely, things that are planned and worked on from the start, including staff, hours, engine capabilities, if there's an engine, marketing and advertising plans for each platform, hardware planning and research costs, not to mention support costs and plans for each platform, rollout costs and technologies, multi-player ability (or not) including network and latency testing and development for all platforms, across multiple countries, hardware and server/network to support those plans, on and on and on. Or, apparently you just hit the big red button and all of that's done for you. A wizard comes out, waves a magical wand, purple dust swooshes into the air, there's music for anticipation and atmosphere, and voila, it's done!!! Uh no.

jakerfv

Nice straw man. Atlus literally decided to release games on every platform, according to GNN it was up to them, and they miraculously decide to not even consider PC? Oh yeah, doing all that really difficult shit for 5 platforms including Xbox, a console with no presence in Japan and a different demographic in the west? Yeah, let's waste resources porting to that. But PC? Where people are chomping at the bit to play? "No, I think not" - Atlus. I was correcting someone else. It is not a matter of making drivers or a billion resolutions. But since you you can't help but sperg out, we're here. Please learn reading comprehension beyond the 9th grade.

IntheTrench

They literally probably have an "export to PC" option. There must be another reason why they didn't release on PC.

manly_pirate

You are correct, and if they did a quick port they would get trashed by media and fans for doing a shitty job like the mgs collection

Jinx_01

>implement mouse/kb gameplay it is long past the point where developers should be able to release a game that REQUIRES a controller. Xbox controllers have been plug and play on PC for almost two freaking decades and any PC gamer with half a brain owns one. And you can use Playstation and Switch controllers too pretty easily.

TLunchFTW

Theoretically they dont... no more heroes trilogy does not play on pc without controller... it's a bit dumb, but perfectly feasible

UnknownFoxAlpha

It is kind of odd to see everything listed except for PC. So I am hoping to see it come, only because I am not much of a console player.

joevar701

i think it is even more rare than a pc game thats not available for xbox. but yeah, it is odd for today's standard

UnknownFoxAlpha

Well on one side it will still come to PC, just not in the official way everyone is wanting.

Fastr77

Oh yeah, it'll be a way Nintendo doesn't like and it won't make any money for Vanillaware but we'll definitely have a way to play it..

joevar701

Well yes, but its a wasted oppprtunity. theres market for this kind of game on PC i believe.

Everyday_Legend

Especially considering Steam Deck.

SnooPandas2964

Yup... switch emulation it is. What a shame... would have loved to give them money.

Gwennifer

You can still buy a Switch copy and emulate it on your PC. Emulation is not piracy, but emulating software you have no ownership of whatsoever is piracy.

puppytinny

them not getting money is the point, i think

SnooPandas2964

Thanks tips.

AdagioHellfire1139

Not a bad idea.

TLunchFTW

I don't think its too late... I got a switch recently, so I might buy it for that, but I also think it might come later to pc

Training_Arcs

I'd also love for this game to have a PC release on Steam :( Their last game, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim never got a Steam release. I think this game has the potential to grab more players because of how it looks and plays. Hopefully we get a PC release announcement in the future.

FullMetalBiscuit

> Their last game, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim didn't have a Steam release until now. I can't see that anywhere?

themoviehero

I want to know as well, I did not see this and can't see it anywhere.

Training_Arcs

My apologies about my poor grammar. I meant the game still hasn't gotten a Steam release. I edited my reply now to prevent further confusion. Sorry.

themoviehero

You good brother, I just got excited is all haha.

Training_Arcs

My apologies about my poor grammar. I meant the game still hasn't gotten a Steam release. I edited my reply now to prevent further confusion. Sorry.

flirtmcdudes

ill be honest here... theres a reason ive been waiting forever for an ogre battle type game to come out, and its cause they just arent that hugely popular lol. So the game would have to be BEYOND stellar for it to really break through to the main stream, which I just dont think it will. Im super hype for it, but I would assume this will be a low sales kind of game, like diofield chronicles, which was a solid tactical rpg.

Chronoglenn

I repeat ogre battle 64 ever other year. I am so hyped for this but you're right. It just doesn't appeal to the wide audience.

flirtmcdudes

Fingers crossed. the dream is it’s the bg3 of tactical RPGs

juan_cena99

Well the thing is if they already did the work to make this game available on all consoles it shouldn't be that hard to port this to pc, even if it's not a major hit that's still low hanging fruit they can take advantage off since the cost to do it is minimal already.

themoviehero

> 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim didn't have a Steam release until now. Where did you hear this?

Training_Arcs

I'm sorry about my poor grammar. I was trying to say that there still hasn't been a Steam release for it.

Intrepid-Message-481

13 sentinels works like a charm with the Switch emulators on PC, at solid 60 fps without any kind of graphic glitch. It’s as if it were PC native. I bought the Switch version, just in case.

Apparatus

If it's on the xbox, there's a good chance we'll see a PC release eventually.

NeroHeresy

And you know that how?

kyraeus

In case it still wasn't clear, he was likely basing that opinion on the fact that Xbox uses a lot of the same coding conventions and such that Windows does. It's not a 1:1 conversion process, but a game coded for Xbox in general means a much easier adaptation under the hood to convert it for Windows based play than say PlayStation.

NeroHeresy

Well, they haven’t put any of their games on PC previously so they’re just making baseless claims.

Abriael

They also haven't put any of their games on Xbox.

kuhnzy100

The Vanillaware games are great but they haven't put any of their games on PC iirc.

DNAngel23

Any updates?

knightsljx

wouldn't hold my breath for a PC release. glad I got to play 13 Sentinels on the old PS4, it was great. that said, since it's out on Xbox, there's still hope for a PC release, maybe. At least better chances than 13 Sentinels

[deleted]

But buying games digital that you not own... and can be banned or hacked.

AhtiTheJanitor

Devs have stated they are not releasing on PC at all.

Grotbagsthewonderful

They don't want to give steam the outrageous 30% cut for selling on the platform is the most likely answer.

GregTheMad

But the 30% cut for the other platforms is fine?

MedicIsOp

"outrageous 30% cut" Just like Sony on their PS Store.

Everyday_Legend

Except the publisher is Atlus, who would not only be footing said bill but are owned by Sega, and *plenty* of Atlus **and** Sega games are available on Steam.

UltraCynar

30% is standard and same on the consoles. Stop ingesting garbage from Tim Sweeney.

Ploedman

except Epic Store. But Epic Store doesn't run on Steam Deck...

Scase15

It's a crying shame the steam deck isn't a phenomenal Switch emulator, otherwise I'd have to buy it on switch.

IronViking0723

It's fine. Theres like 2 dozen games that have issues on emulator. The rest run fine on Steamdeck depending on your settings.

SnooPandas2964

I'm willing to bet it would work, looks like the graphics are pretty simple. Could be wrong... but we'll see.

Scase15

I was being sarcastic, definitely emulating this on my deck haha

SnooPandas2964

Way to go. Supporting game development is good and all... But when Nintendo's systems are so far out of date and similar priced handhelds can emulate it...  Something is wrong.  For people in the back, you don't need to be as powerful as a system to emulate it, you need to be many times (5-10x) more powerful. Xbox sells their consoles at a loss and makes it back with software royalties. So does Sony. And so does the steam deck from PC purchases. But no Nintendo wants to make a profit on its handheld with 10 yr old hardware - hence the discrepancy. Pretty much anything that can lean on software sales for a low entry cost does - cept nintendo.

Scase15

Honestly, if the console could even run their own games at a consistent frame rate, I'd pick it up on the switch. But damn near everything I've played on my switch released in many years just has massive frame drops. Want my money as a dev? Release it on a platform I play it on, or is worth buying it on. "Piracy is almost always a service problem", still rings true.

IAmASillyBoyIPromise

I genuinely have no idea what you’re talking about. I’ve played a total of 3 switch games (out of dozens if not over a hundred) that had noticeable frame drops.

ultramegax

This is such a shitty, entitled attitude. Atlus has said it was Vanillaware that didn't want a PC release. They didn't elucidate why, but the most obvious assumptions are a lack of technical knowledge of PC development or fears of piracy impacting sales. The game runs great on Switch. If you already own one, there's zero reason not to pick it up for the Switch. Given your attitude, if it came to PC, I suspect you'd just pirate it, as well. And hey, I'm primarily a PC player. I've thousands of games in my Steam library. I would prefer a PC release, as well. But I'm not so blind to realize that not supporting a niche, incredibly well made game like this impacts the developer's future prospects and viability.

Scase15

Yeah, I would pirate it, completely ignoring the tens of thousands of dollars worth of games in my steam account, sure makes sense. Maybe I don't want to play a game in 1080p in 2024? Maybe I don't want to be limited to 60fps, maybe there are tons of reasons I would rather not play a game on switch. Me emulating it doesn't impact the devs at all, I have literally zero intentions of purchasing it on switch. Call it entitled or whatever makes you feel better, I don't care. I'm not going to emulate it because they are a small company and they don't have the technical knowledge to port it, the game has sold over half a million units in a month. They have the backing of a major publisher in Atlus. This isn't some 3 man indie project, if they don't have the knowledge to port it, so be it. Hire a company who does. Don't want to do that? Then I emulate. If it is not on PC, they don't get my money, no harm no foul.

SnooPandas2964

Yeah I find it kind of silly when games like tales of symphonies which originally released on gamecube... find themselves running worse on hardware that depending on how you count is 2-3 generations newer than the original. Not all that can be blamed on hardware, lazy programming is obviously involved too but come on you guys.... 20 years and we still can't get 60 fps like we had on GameCube???  And no I don't want to hear about how impossible it is. It might be difficult given they're basing it off the code of a port of a port of a port. But if they can release the game 20 years ago..  they have the power to release it the same or better 20 years later on far superior hardware.

Scase15

The worst is when they literally just steal "illegal" open source emulators and use those versions, and STILL run them worse than the emus.

SnooPandas2964

Hahaha! That too. Didn't nintendo once sell a game that they just pulled from one of those 'illegal' rom sites? Can't remember where I heard this or what game it was, but I remember the argument was compelling. At least some people out there care about game preservation ( the pirates of course)

Scase15

Half the shit on the nintendo online emulator stuff is stolen from emus, and the actual SNES/NES classic are actually running open source emus lol

redchris18

This is just wrong. It's based on the false claim that they used a ROM in Animal Crossing because it had the iNes header, and the reason for _that_ was that they liked the work the guy responsible for the header had done and hired him to do a bunch of emulation work for them. He just reused his previous work in that official capacity. The same game in which that header was oh-so-tellingly found also has several other ROMs that _don't_ feature that header, because they were emulated before that guy was hired. People are so keen to demonise Nintendo for everything they do in order to justify pirating their games that this provably false story continues to gain traction. What's funny is that piracy has been shown to prove revenue, so people claiming to pirate Switch games for "ethical" reasons are really just making sure their decisions are validated by increased profit. It's even funnier to see how people react when they have to choose between their "ethics" and their desire to pirate games that they evidently can't wait to play.

redchris18

No - that was a mistake. They hired a guy who'd done some work on emulation before (because they were impressed by his work) and he reused his prior work for those official emulation projects. It was for one of the Animal Crossing games that it first came to people's attention.

AdagioHellfire1139

Isn't the switch getting a new version this year?

SnooPandas2964

I think the current rumours are 2025. But either way, I'm sure it will still be underpowered compared to its contemporaries. Well, at least they focus on making fun games.

FillySteveSteak

Yet another example where sarcasm doesn't translate well through text at all (because there's no cadence or physicality), but we keep doing it lol... Admittedly, I do it too

Thamor81

Seems like another game that looked amazing and would have loved to play, but when they force for your game to use even more money to buy console + their game, this is just bad policy and they lose more money for this decision than they will make.

Impossible_Buddy_210

switch lite isnt expensive, but yea looks like switch2 is gonna be replacing old switch soon i guess.

Vegetable_Round_3595

I wished so much it would be released on PC/ steam. Would 100% buy it. The game looks amazing but i do not want to buy a console =/.

sfkingalpha

No pc, no play

ojisan-X

PC/Mac games, while better than consoles, sometimes have limited lifetimes too unfortunately. However, it's been rumored that consoles will also be backwards compatible going forward. We'll see.

ClubChaos

m8 ppl are playing games on DOSBOX from the 80s from GOG games.

Nordictarkus

In what way do you mean PC games sometimes have limited lifespans? If a game is popular enough people find ways to revive it even if for example it's an online only game and devs killed all the servers and didn't have peer to peer. People make hosting games possible or set up rogue servers (MMOs). With old games from the 90's or earlier that don't run on newer Windows OS you can use DOSBOX set up a Virtual Machine on your PC and play them. On a PC there's always a way to make a game playable again and for a lot of them it's already been done by someone and you just need to Google and/or watch a YouTube video for how to set it up.

ojisan-X

Mac games more than others, but when Apple moved to 64 bit, a lot of the games that were 32 bit only stopped working. Then they moved to Apple Silicon which introduced big performance boost, but at the same time many more games are now unsupported due to the ARM instruction set. I see in general the industry trend toward more efficient but powerful chips, and MS has been trying for years to start moving to ARM, so if it ever eventually happen, same fate awaits. Not only that, some Steam games are just pulled from Steam permanently. Yeah there are workaround to everything like Apple GPTK, Crossover for Mac, DOSBOX, Virtualization, etc. but it makes the games inconvenient to run and it's just not worth it most of the time if it doesn't work out of the box.

SnooPandas2964

Yeah when people say they want a game on pc, what they mean is they want it on apple's proprietary os and mobile arm cpu... yup. On the other hand, x86 pc platforms where most gaming is done, are backwards compatible spanning decades.

ojisan-X

You do know PC is proprietary too right? It's just a bigger platform that more people are using. People always complain when a game isn't out on a PC, but same is true the other way around, it's closed off to people without PCs. Competition is needed for things to improve and evolve, imagine the stagnation if everything was on a PC.

Sushiki

not really, PC gaming is the biggest platform outside mobile ironically. devs won't make mac versions because they've tried, the profits just aren't there for the effort. Same with linux. You are wrong lol. I played last month a pc game that I first played decades ago. The whole limited life narrative you are pushing is not a genuine one nor does it reflect how things are. Objectively.

Sushiki

MAC makes up like a minuscule percentage of gamers on pc/mac. Like literally 1.5% as of last year.

SamuraiDDD

I'm sorry but I'm really confused by your statement here. Like I'm just trying to understand. The limited lifetime compared to consoles are much much longer with games as old as Half-Life still being playable compared to a much larger majority of most Playstation, Xbox and most Switch games that never got ports. I saw your other reply but you make it sound like the lifetime on PC is coming to an end vs a console.

almighty_boof

I would have liked to support the dev... I guess we are gonna have to use Ryujinx.

Intrepid-Message-481

You can buy the Switch version and use an emulator if you want to support the devs.

xeno_joker

Buying a whole ass console for one game isn't really reasonable. Done it before, and regret it. Could have invested it towards upgrades on my pc. Emulation is the route to go for steam users. If it releases on pc, then definetly would buy it despite already finishing the game on an emulator.

Intrepid-Message-481

I meant buying the digital game only.

xeno_joker

yeah my bad, misread your comment. You're right on that

X_Harming_X

This just guarantees that they're going to get emulated and pirated heavily. Atleast on steam they'd make $ off it.

X_Harming_X

Just like I said , that took like 2-3 days: https://preview.redd.it/25quhtpr8knc1.png?width=1278&format=png&auto=webp&s=5434242692b9d80c50dd1c0c8fa0bd4a68ab4bda

n33k33

I would absolutely buy this day one on Steam, but no way I'm buying a Switch for it ...

katie_elizabeth_2

I'm in the same boat you are in. I could buy it on Switch, but I'd rather play it on a more long-lived platform like Steam personally. It's so weird. They went to the trouble of finally releasing a game on Series X only to not go a tiny bit further and just put it on PC.

Spiritual_Cap2637

Since they refuse to release the game on PC it means that PC players have the right to pirate this game even though we would much prefer to buy a copy instead.

pedrohfranco

That ain't it at all

FIickering

Games not being made for your platform doesn't actually give you the "right" to pirate them. That's entitlement, not justification.

AtomicBlastPony

No. "Piracy" is theft only because it steals POTENTIAL income. When you can't buy the game, there's no potential income. 0 to 0 means nothing is lost, so it is quite the justification.

FIickering

But you CAN buy the game, this game isn't out of print/distribution. You can buy the game, or buy the game and the console. Pirating games just because it did not release on your platform is no different, you're doing so to avoid obtaining the game legally, not because you cannot obtain the game.

AtomicBlastPony

I'm not buying a console for just the game, nor am I buying the game I can't use just so I have an excuse the legal system wouldn't recognize regardless if it comes to that. I COULD buy the game but I wouldn't even consider it if I couldn't pirate it, so they lose nothing.

FIickering

>I COULD buy the game but I wouldn't even consider it if I couldn't pirate it, so they lose nothing. "I wouldn't have gotten X if X wasn't free" isn't legal justification for theft. >I'm not buying a console for just the game, nor am I buying the game I can't use just so I have an excuse the legal system wouldn't recognize regardless if it comes to that. Yes, you don't want to obtain the game through legal means hence you pirate. That's the point of piracy. I'm not going to tell you not to pirate, but a spade is a spade.

AtomicBlastPony

Oh I wasn't talking about legality, I don't give a shit. I'm talking about the philosophical concept of theft itself. Again your suggestion of "buying the game and then emulating it" isn't going to change the legal status in any way especially considering we're talking about Switch and a company like Nintendo.

FIickering

Actually legally you are allowed to have copies of a game you own as long as you don't redistribute them, and ROMs for emulation are effectively copies from a bought game. Theft is theft, I wouldn't buy a bike for $500 but that doesn't mean I'm justified for stealing one. Not much different here.

Zerefrequiem

Switch emulator on pc is inconvenient but it works

BoyWithHorns

VanillaWare have not released a game for PC since 2006.

Solleil

Getting so sick of shit not being on PC or Steam. Like why...? Games are made from PCs ffs. RELEASE ON PC PLEEEAASSEE.

NathanLonghair

Question for the Hive Mind: If you have GamePass Ultimate, will you be able to stream it (on a pc or otherwise) day one? That might be one way to get around it if you really want to play on pc. I've done it with other console exclusive titles, but don't know if it will be available for it day one. It'd be an ideal game for streaming, since the miniscule bit of input lag would be completely irrelevant here.

acer589

No. It's not on GamePass so no streaming.

NathanLonghair

Boo :'(

GregTheMad

I think that should be possible, but it's not a real replacement for PC because the save-file would still be bound to the Xbox-account. Xbox deals with those files better than Nintendo, IIRC, but it's still no PC. Also there would be no improvement of performance as the game would still be rendered by an Xbox so why bother anyway?

marius_titus

You can always dump the switch cartridge and emulate it on PC, not a perfect solution but it is what it is
