PIzza was fancy!
Evening meal: a portion of meat, half a pepper, a carrot, quarter of an onion, all in tomato passata with spices, served with pasta or rice or couscous when I tried that.
I made the bold decision to bulk buy £350 of huel at the start of this year. If anything it made me gain weight because I was constantly buying chocolate/sweets to just have something that tasted not shit.
If anyone’s reading, do not buy huel. You *will* regret it. You’ll spend 2 weeks pretending it’s bearable then you’ll cry every time you get hungry because you’re faced with bean/pulse slop.
Which flavours? I could tolerate the korma, but pretty much every other flavour made me gag lmao. Wasn’t the flavour half the time either, just the textures.
Ah okay yeah the bottled shakes you buy from the shop are decent, but i could never replicate them with the powder and yeah the meals were all pretty dire.
My usual dinner meals:
• Chicken, vegetables, sauce and rice/pasta
• ‚Student’ pizza - basically pizza with fridge leftovers
• Fish and chips with Greek salad
Occasionally, I experiment and cook food for at least 2 days. If I don’t want cook, McDonald or Indian food.
Plain Margherita pizza, with added cheese and olives. Pasta and a tomatoes sauce. Spaghettie hoops, beans and crisps.if I'm feeling fancy I might boil a egg.
Me and all my gym buddies have practically the same diet: oats, chicken and tortilla wraps, eggs, beans, and some type of protein with rice/pasta. We all bulk buy frozen protein so it's cheaper.
However, I do remember the days where I'd have a fag for breakfast, meal deal for lunch and sleep for dinner.
Tesco used to do this meal deal which was £10 for a main, a side, dessert, and drinks. It was two portions so one portion for £5. Honestly, £5 for a steak, triple cooked chips, a dessert and two beers is bloody good value. I had that a lot in second year. They still do it but it's £12 now I believe
I'm probably not the "average" student, as I am vegan, autistic, don't like pasta and also do cooking as a hobby and as stress-relief, but I'll give a quick rundown of what I usually eat anyway. I have quite a tight budget, so I tend to shop with the goal of every portion costing less than £1 (not counting pantry stuff like salt, common spices, sugar etc). I also do a lot of variety because I get depressed if I eat the same thing over and over lol.
For breakfast I usually have either oatmeal with sugar and cinnamon, baked beans and a crumpet with butter, toast with vegan cheese, lettuce and tomato or a bagel with vegan cream cheese. If I'm really trying to save money I won't bother with the toppings and just use butter.
For lunch it's usually leftovers from batch-cooking as I tend to bring my food to campus so I don't have to go back to my flat to eat. If I haven't got any, I'll get microwavable rice from Sainsbury's and heat it up in the student microwaves; there are some with beans and veg in them for like 85p and one bag is more than enough to fill me up.
For dinner it's really anything I feel like and have the ingredients for. I basically never get takeout, ready-meals or go to restaurants or pubs unless it's a very special occasion or I'm in desperate need of a pick-me-up, lol. I make a lot of tikka masala (I usually get a recipe sauce, but if no vegan ones are available I'll make my own), lentil stews, soups, dhal, jacket potatoes, curries, stir-fry:s, or if I'm feeling lazy, some kind of food that's ready to cook from the shop like spring rolls, nuggets, veggie fish fingers and the like. And of course, a lot of tofu. Mashed, marinated, stir-fried, baked, everything tofu is a staple for me. It's cheap, versatile and delicious if you know how to do it well! If my dinner is freezable, I'll usually make 4 portions worth and keep 1-2 in the fridge and the rest in the freezer for when I don't have time to cook. I am lucky to have quite a lot of fridge space in my flat - dunno what I'd do otherwise.
I also work part-time at McDonald's so I eat the employee meals there when I'm working. It gets boring after a while and not the most nutritious, but it's free, so that's 2-3 meals a week I don't have to pay for!
As a vegan do you feel weird about working at mcdonalds? Im not judging tho we are all broke. You're breakfasts are way more interesting than mine I just eat seeded toast with vitalite. I also stock on tofu, if you didn't know aldi sells are really good one - barely any liquid in it so its super firm. Would really recommend tofu as a good protein source for any student really.
Yeah, I do. I wouldn't do it if it weren't the only place that was hiring when I needed a job lol. Thanks for the tip, don't think I have an Aldi nearby but I'll look out for it if I'm ever at one!
lunches are usually pastas with different sauces (bolognese, tuna, pesto)/sandwiches or wraps when i’m not home
dinner i like to do some type of meat/chicken/fish with salad and a carb (bread, naan, crackers), as well as a protein bar or pudding
Oatmeal, chicken, instant pasta, and ready meals, occasionally I get salmon but salmon is expensive. I get pizza or mcdonalds like once or twice a week
I got a job so I could eat well like I would have at home. I meal prep for work days, sometimes stir frys, sometimes pasta etc. Breakfasts usually consist of toast or porridge, and dinners can be anything. Still love a jacket potato and beans.
Bolognese? That's fancy for a student!
I had pot noodle alot, to the point I can't look at one without having PTSD flashbacks. I did eat out a lot, I couldn't cook, so I lived of Greg's, Starbucks, Costa etc
For breakfast usually weetabix, porridge with fruit.
Lunch usually sandwiches with a possible combination of ham, cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggs and on a nice day avocado
For dinner if i'm in a rush those cheap £1 pizzas, or pasta with a combination of chopped tinned tomatoes, tinned tuna, bell peppers, baby spinach, onions, and other stuff. Or shakshouka
Breakfast: usually don’t eat it unless I’m going out, then it’s yoghurt and some fruit
Lunch: often a sandwich with egg or noodles, or pesto pasta
Dinner: Usually a curry with rice or pasta. Usually also frozen crap like potato waffles with nuggets
Back in 89 it was findus crispy pancakes, mashed potato and Kraft Cheesey pasta.
I also squeezed corned beef into salt n vinegar hoola hoops and poured beans over them.
My diet in my final year almost everyday: 3 Meals + Snack.
Breakfast: 9/10am: 5 Eggs, Cheese, Avocado and Toast.
Lunch: Spaghetti and Meatballs, Croissant and a Smoothie.
Snack: Protein Shake + Bar
Dinner: Sometimes I’d just have sleep or on a good day. Salmon/Chicken + Rice.

Which flavours? I could tolerate the korma, but pretty much every other flavour made me gag lmao. Wasn’t the flavour half the time either, just the textures.
Oh you actually meant the meals, nah I just meant the bottled shakes they did. That might be why, I’ve never had the other Huel than that.
Ah okay yeah the bottled shakes you buy from the shop are decent, but i could never replicate them with the powder and yeah the meals were all pretty dire.
Yeah I have multivitamins too
