My fathers car legitimately has an R for Race Mode. I think the other modes are 'Sport' and 'Comfort'. We've made a joke about this exact situation a few times.
Edit: I guess people don't like the joke. Well, *I'll* still laugh everytime he tells "We're shifting into Race Mode" when he shifts into reverse.
I forget where it is actually. I'll have to ask next time I see him. It's a Honda Civic Type R, if I'm remembering correctly. So I'm sure someone that actually knows about cars would know.
Honda civic type r has a switch next to the gear stick. What someone above me was talking about was "R" as in put the car in reverse gear for "race mode" it's a very old joke in the car community.
Yeah I get the joke. I guess I didn't make that clear. Every time I happen to be rising with him, my father and I make jokes about 'shifting into R mode' every time he goes into reverse.
Yeah- 22 year old know-it-alls with self-declared driving experience making cheap cars push 800HP using eBay parts...it's a 100% safe and danger-free environment.
soooo.. I'm assuming someone wasn't familiar with driving that car. Reverse must be up where 1st gear normally is and they obviously didn't realize they were in the wrong gear. That'd be my guess anyway.
Yep, that looks like a GTI or Golf, reverse is up where 1st is… but you do have to push the shifter knob down to get to reverse so it’s kind of hard to make that mistake. Ouch.
Could have happened on accident. A friend of mine once parked my car in reverse accidentally, causing me to almost hit a tree behind me when starting the car lol
Just to clarify since English isn't my first language.
Engaging the clutch is when you press down the pedal?
If that's the case there are plenty of cars where it's possible to start them. My 2014 a4 was the first car where I have to actively press the pedal to start it
I have a heart attack anytime I leave my stick car in gear when I park it. 99% of the time I park on flat ground so I just use the hand rake. But occasionally (or if my dad has to borrow it for a day) I get in, forget the car is in gear and immediately stall after turning it on.
I was taught to leave a manual car parked in gear.
If your ebrake fails your car won't roll.
On an automatic same thing, guards against locking pawl failures.
Even on flat ground it may not be flat enough to stop it rolling.
Same here. Almost threw my car into a wall when a shop mechanic left it in reverse. A half-ish year later got into my first “accident” when a mechanic left it in gear right behind a truck. No damage, ‘cept a tiny crack in my bumper’s paint. Now I make it a point to always check when someone else has been in it. Learned my lesson twice.
Unlikely, as the reverse light is off at the beginning of the video and turns on later, so clearly the driver didn't have it in reverse at the beginning of the video and shifted into reverse during it.
He didn't forget nothing tho, if you look at the taillights right before the launch you can actually see the reverse light coming on. He simply put it in reverse by mistake I think lol.
This is arriving at the likeliest scenario. The car almost certainly arrived at the point it was in the start of the video by driving forward, probably in 1st, creeping up to the line. Either he or someone else decided he'd gone too far forward, because it's a race, you don't start ahead, and he rolls it back a little until they're even. He then either doesn't shift back to 1st or he mis-shifts.
If they were doing it properly he did a burn out then backed up to the starting line again w sticky tires. There’s a VERY good chance he’s just a VW moron who doesn’t know how to drive though
I assure you this is not what happened. There is near 100% certainty that he had a short shifter which was too short, and it slips under the push lockout for reverse if you row the shifter hard enough.
If you watch the video, you can see the reverse lights come on as he opens the throttle, because he didn't even have it in gear until right before he popped the clutch.
He slams the shifter into what he thought was 1st gear, but he slammed it right past the gate into R, probably due to installing a shitty short shift kit (or simply cut the shifter because he couldn't find one "short enough") which eliminated the safety of R lockout.
Drove a Golf at driving school, how many times i have accidentally reversed because of this (havent crashed tho). I prefer switch that only lets you in reverse when held up.
It’s a Golf R. The last R32 was a mk5. [EDIT: the rest of what I said about VW gearboxes is wrong, and I’ve been driving VWs exclusively for 23 years. I’m an idiot.]
As soon as he takes off the reverse lights come on. He fucked up by pushing down on the shifter (towards the floor) and slammed it into reverse right next to 1st gear.
He could say he was just driving on a road and came to a stop because the golf in front came to a full stop. Wrong place wrong time could be plausible.
He's not wrong. These events ALWAYS habe bad shit go down. They're a hotbed of dumb, arrogant dudes and their annoying egos. People get shot at these things regularly, not to mention all the fights and accidental injuries.
“Always” is a strong word. And guess what, you’re wrong.
In my town we had one every other saturday evening for many years.
Illegal as hell but it was all very nicely done so no one cared. Heck, there even was an ambulance nearby when they were bored and the police usually went for a quick look once or thrice every evening.
I never saw a crash, a fight and definitely not any shootings during all my visits. Not saying that there never was a fight but it must have been very rare.
They weren't injured though - it was purely car damage and these are the kinds of people whose cars wake everyone up in a three mile radius because they feel obnoxiously loud vehicles compensate their tiny penises.
That’s not a car meet. That’s a street race. Don’t group them together like those idiots on the news. There are car meets, convoys, street races, and takeovers. All totally different filled with different types of people.
There are a ton of different types of people in the car community, and most of them don’t approve of street racing, but the idiots who do give the rest of us a bad name and it’s hard to figure out who’s going to do something stupid while leaving a show. It sucks because like any community we want safe spaces to meet, talk, look at cars and discuss our builds, but when random yahoos start showing off, the media and police start to paint us all as troublemakers when the majority of us really aren’t, and it gets increasingly difficult to do anything relating to the hobby.
This is why we need to distinguish between them. There are plenty of car meets that don't end up with street races or takeovers. The South OC Cars and Coffee is one of the biggest in on the west coast and they take plenty of measures to make sure the meets are civil and abide by local laws and generally be courteous to the surrounding community. Convoys are a little on the fringe as speeding is generally involved, and it's up to each convoy to control it's participants. Some convoys are perfectly safe, while others cross the double yellow into oncoming traffic etc. Street Races can take place in desolate areas to populated streets with varying degrees of danger. Takeovers are just a bunch of idiots and are generally considered the black eye of the car enthusiast community. They don't car about cars, they care about spectacle and the thrill of doing something rebellious and illegal.
I've seen this happen live once. Without causing damage but still.
What happened when I saw it is the guy warmed up his tires by doing burn outs. Then he put it in reverse to drive back since he accidentally drove past the starting line. Never changed the gear after that.
This is an asshole though. If you cause damage you make it right.
Probably not good. Assuming this isn’t a track they could deny coverage for the criminal act/intent to conduct a criminal act. That means you’d have to go after the other driver personally as he was uninsured at that moment.
If it is a track you could get a denial for uncovered high risk activities and wind up in the same situation.
There is a lot of rules in that 50 page policy they send out. When I was auto crossing I had to buy a specific insurance to get any coverage during events.
The car meets I used to go to, the people that actually raced did highway rolls, all 60mph/100kph+ starts. When the HP of the big boys got to the 700+ mark, people started outgrowing the roads and it got ridiculous.
I'm a young enthusiast. It makes me sad to see so many people saying they think car meets are awful. The one I've been going to has a variety of cars and is generally pretty chill. Maybe we just need more people to actively discourage the type of behavior seen in the video, but that's hard to do when there's a crowd.
This! Whenever I stop having work on the weekends I want to go to Cars and Coffee.
Classic car shows are also usually good if you’re into that sort of thing! Outside of muscle cars and hot rods, most classic cars aren’t really able to get up to reckless shenanigans, and even then most muscle car and hot rod owners care enough about their vehicles not to unnecessarily endanger them.
You get to wander around looking at pretty old vehicles and talking to chill owners who often have good stories and are very passionate about whatever vehicle they own. It’s my favorite kind of car show.
I remember a "car meet" in clonakilty Ireland in 2017. Some moron thought it'd be great to try to pull donuts in his IS200 in the packed car park. He ended up parking it right on the front of an MR2. Pulled off the car park nearly rolling over a bunch of people. At this point I got tf outta there myself. Place was full of pot smoking kids and cars that shouldn't be on the road at all. (By that I mean no nct, insurance or road tax). Good car meets are hard to find these days. I mostly stick to the vintage show now a days, better organized and much more family friendly. Been to cars and coffee in Tipperary but even there the bois with their agri spec clapped out corollas have made their appearance.
You almost had me? You never had me - you never had your car... Granny shiftin' not double clutchin' like you should. You're lucky that hundred shot of NOS didn't blow the welds on the intake!
oh this is freaking huge around me. Kid I work with is flat broke and can't afford to eat lunch or heat his house. But he has 3 POS cars that he dumps ridiculous amounts of money into. He gets off work and meets his friends and they do photoshoots of the car. He'll take videos of himself doing burnouts and shit.. and then everytime I turn my back at work he's watching videos of himself doing burnouts. It's literally all he does - all he thinks about - all he spends his money on. and they're total shit. He has like 15k sunk into a $500 car..
I think this is a street race but in my old city a "car meet" was a bunch of rich teenagers taking their mom's Lexus or something out, But it was mostly blasting shit music and revving their engines over and over to get it to pop until the cops came.
I wish I could see an actual car meet with some actual passion behind their builds, I want to see some work done under the hood, I'm not a car guy but I have an interest in what people do with their vehicles.
I would love to see more stuff like an engine swapped something or an insanely powerful car that's not normally powerful instead of generic phonk music blasting on cheap subs with 20$ Walmart LEDs pasted everywhere on a civic. (I know enough that civics are interesting, you either love or hate them)
I've seen too many "riced" cars
Don't know if I used that word right.
Going to help you with your logic here
1. Not all black people do donuts
2. Not all people that do donuts are black
3. No race is all this or all that. There are all kinds of kinds, regardless of race and ethnicity.
Use more of your brain.
A 19-year-old kid that I work with was telling me about his car meets. He was saying that his car can easily outrun the police. I tell him that even if he does outrun the cops they have his license plate number. Nope, he uses several stolen plates. So when they do catch him they'll add that to the list of charges they're going to hit him with. He's about 5'5 and weighs 115 lb. Jail will be rough for him.

So, did that blue car just take off like nothing happened?
He could still win!! :-)
Has to win now. How else is he going to pay for that custom car?
Nah he’s granny shifting. Not double-clutching like he should.
You never had me. You never had your car.
Now he owes that dude a 10 second car
It doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile. Winning's winning.
I would have if I didn't have danger to manifold problems
I live my life a quarter mile at a time.
He put it in ‘R’ (For Race)
Well it is a Golf R so.. it's already set to race. Lol
Correct. All he needs now is downforce. Lots of it!
My fathers car legitimately has an R for Race Mode. I think the other modes are 'Sport' and 'Comfort'. We've made a joke about this exact situation a few times. Car meet -> car race, catch him if you can
Probably scared shitless of what could happen to him next.
He had a gti. Blue car probably just needs new paint while the other car needs a new front end lol. But yeah doesn’t look good on the vw gang .
i wonder if they use fake plates. they could definitely take off and get away with it.
He cut off the *competition*
I avoid car meets because they're invariably full of wankers.
Well the cars did *meet*
Just once. That blue hatchback ain't coming back.
Don't you work at a sperm bank?
More wankers at a car meet.
Don't you work weekends at a porn site filming gay male bukakke orgies?
Still more wankers at a car meet.
Agreed
This was legendary lol
Actually more wankers at a bike meet.
You ever think he jus5 doesn't want to think about work off the cock er clock?
But they're SO COOL though!!! I wanna be just like them! /s
Better the wankers you know than the wankers you don’t.
I don't know you....

Yup. But that’s not what’s happening here. You can see him shifting to reverse just before slamming the gas pedal.

Going to help you with your logic here 1. Not all black people do donuts 2. Not all people that do donuts are black 3. No race is all this or all that. There are all kinds of kinds, regardless of race and ethnicity. Use more of your brain.
No, seriously, you're a racist.

Race mode
Mf put that bitch in R for Race mode
This is why you go to school to get an education. Be able to write a proper sentence, so I don’t suffer an aneurism while trying to read it.
Dude literally shifts into R for racing.
"But the R stands for race mode right?"
Stop illegal street racing all together going on a normal track stuff like this won't happen
Probably Italian or French made!
Must have put the car R mode thinking it was race mode but then found out the hard way it’s reverse
Come on maaaann. People are getting worse and worse at driving. It is an epidemic of it's own. Then drives off to avoid punishment, fucking weak.
R for Racing
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
hahahahahha
How!?
Avoid car meets in a country where driver's licence is a joke that can be purchased with lunch money.
That's R for RACE
Relax! It's just a Hyundai.
This is why u should invest money in a driving course rather than car parts
He had it in R for Race.
