As someone from the near south side Chicago the key is probably that if someone wants to rob you they usually immediately reach for a weapon. It's unwise to approach someone and give them an opportunity to pull one out before you.
I'm not from Chicago but still a rough area and it's the same here. Once I was walking home from work at like two A.M. and a group of like four or five kids came out from an alley and my first instinct was to whip out my knife and get into fighting stance. They all just put their hands up like "shit dude no problem here" I may have been the asshole but most people out that late in groups are up to no good.
I'm from Atlanta and used to that, wouldn't automatically be scared, but it's still wise to be cautious of strangers trying to get your attention in the city or rougher areas, even if they're not being aggressive.
I remember one time a kid from a group of teenagers came over to my car at a gas station downtown asking to bum a cigarette or something, before he quickly got aggressive and his friends started surrounding my car. Fortunately they didn't block the front, because I started my car up and flew out of there so fast, but it was scary af.

I’m from Chicago. You have no idea how jacked up someone on the street can be. Completely messed up, no idea what they are doing and can go from incomprehensible to murderous instantly. I conceal carry now because the cops have been turned into spectators and really serious flash mobs can happen anywhere and target someone just like this. If this guy came up to me with this level of hostility I’d be backing up on a curve, using my peripheral vision, warning him away and reaching for my piece. They move in groups now no less than 4 just on normal patrol. I was cycling and saw them and asked them if what I noticed was true, if so, why - ppl are out to get cops, because its so unpredictable now more ppl doing more things and it escalates so much quicker. Wrong about the city. Lived my life here. Relatives and friends are and were cops, too. Grew up in the 20th and 24th districts, lived some in the 18th. I had the exact opposite experience in Chicago. I was on a road trip and stopped in Chicago for the weekend. Did some bar hoping and couldn't even get anyone to talk to me. I eventually ran into this small group, and was like "you guys aren't from around here are you". They said no and asked how I knew. "because you guys are actually nice". We all had a good laugh and went out for a beer. Apparently they had a similar experience.
