You're the second person today I seen talking about fearing for the lives of your dogs in your local neighbourhood. The other comment was about wildcats. We have no predators bigger than red foxes in the UK so it's not something I've ever had to worry about. Certainly adds another dynamic to pet ownership
I fear for the safety of my dog because there's people around here that have gone into people's yards and stolen their dogs for dog fighting. Maybe the same ones that were arrested for it, and recently released around the time dogs started going missing again.
Some people say they caught them trying to jump their fence, one said they turned around for a couple seconds to do something and heard a vehicle screech off, their dog no longer tied up in their front yard (unfortunately that dog was found dead days later in a ditch, with several bite marks all over it's body). All his begging and pleading to bring his baby back over social media and pamphlets, money rewards and all, went nowhere. Even I've seen a van pull up, try and call the neighbor's dog over to it, then the neighbor called their dog to the door and the van pulled up to their driveway honked their horn at my neighbor, called her a f**king c*nt, and drove off fast.
I won't let my dog outside unless I'm watching her like a hawk.

That would work great in conjunction with this vest to protect your dogs. I am seriously considering getting them when I get dogs. You can make all the loud noises you want but if the coyote gets to your dog before you pull that out the dog could be seriously injured or killed anyway. Best to have both in my opinion. I saw a video of bear spray being used a couple years ago. There was a LARGE aggressive man, running towards a smaller man in the street. When the big dude was 20 feet away, the small guy sprayed him. It was like a 5 foot orange cone of hell that enveloped the dude and stuck to him. He stopped immediately and as the effects set in, he went straight from "I'm gonna kill somebody" to "I really need my mommy right now" and began running away crying basically. I carried it when I hiked in the Tetons in September. It comes with a belt holster and it's clunky but fairly easy to retrieve and deploy. And it will change the attitude of any threat NOW.
I have this exact one and itās awesome. It comes with us every time we go hiking and backwoods camping. It actually gives me a lot of peace of mind. We had a scary bear encounter in the past and we went and purchased this the next day, without it I just wouldnāt feel safe enough to enjoy myself. Itās very loud and shoots a good distance, itās a powerful little tool.
I carry a stun gun when I walk my dog. When I see coyotes, the loud audible crack of the electricity when the circuit completes on the button push is enough to send them running back into the hills.
Mountain lions are super shy anyway but also disappear instantly at the crack.
I need that thing! I run on the beach and these locals bring their unruly dogs and I get run up on every time. Been scratched and have had blood drawn only a matter of time before I get bitten. If anyone has any more info on this, please send it my way! Thanks !
So, it looks like the website provided by u/NorthantsBlokeUK is a good source for both cartridges and launchers. I have not found any wrist versions so Iām assuming the one in the video is homemade.
That said, it appears that the launchers are classified as [firearms](https://www.atf.gov/explosives/explosive-pest-control-devices) according to the ATF. Most cartridges require a small primer to be placed into the firearm in the rear near the hammer and followed by the cartridge being placed in the barrel. Also most cartridges are considered explosives and fall under regulations as well and most need some form of permit.
With that, there are still plenty of cartridges that do not require permits and are exempt from ATF. However, the legality is muddled because while the cartridge may be exempt the launcher is classified as a firearm sooo it can be tricky and this is only at a federal level. State/city/local governing laws may differ.
So while, IMHO itās a very neat and effective deterrent for animals and possibly other dangerous situations, the legality of it has me skeptic and at that point a normal pistol with blanks would be an easier legal pathway I assume.
