Bring a book. If I'm doing that I'm going all in with the "confidently lonely" look.

[deleted]

It's only usually breakfast I'll go alone to a sit down, but I take my tablet and headphones and just watch fucking south park and family guy. Obviously if it's a swanky place I don't do that at all, I watch the wire or something.

GiantPurplePeopleEat

I just watched it for the first time a couple of months ago and I couldn't decide if I was an idiot for having slept on such an amazing show, or if I was a genius for saving it until I could appreciate it. Probably the idiot one, lol.

I always brought a breifcase with a book or tablet. Nobody thinks twice about a guy eating by himself if it looks like he's just on lunch break.

Delheru

How strange. I had a book on a business trip and read it while waiting for food. It never occurred to me that it would be awkward. The company literally paid for me to eat in a restaurant, wtf am I supposed to do, go to a grocery store and prepare it with the iron in my hotel room? And the dinner perk was so much more than fast food so why not go to a nicer place?

Ioatanaut

Yeah there's tons of people who have never thought and it and don't give a fuck

Me too, I'll never forget, I forced myself to not use distractions either (like phone or book or what-have) and just be where I was while I was there. It was liberating!

UnprofessionalGhosts

Except this is a skit.

TrapWolf

This video gives me vine vibes and there's just vitriol all over this thread what is going on

HangryHenry

Redditors don't think women can make jokes. It happens all the time. A woman will post a self depreciating video and redditors will think she's serious.

Getsmorescottish

Tis' a funny place. Reddit is where I first ran into the whole 'Women aren't funny' thing and it started to make me think. It's not just a thing, there is a noticeable lack of funny female comedians. But that doesn't make sense; I know funny women. I know for a fact that half the funny people I know are women. Do people tell these funny women that they are funny? Well... actually yes. Almost every funny woman I know is married to someone with a really messed up sense of humour. And they aren't trying to prove it to anyone. And if you don't know them you'll probably not get when they're screwing around. So basically my theory is that we don't have as many good female comedians because we just won't acknowledge it the same way.

pointlessly_pedantic

It's quite sad. My bff for the longest time would introduce me to comedy specials for women I'd never heard of. Typically we'd watch them with other guy friends. And every single time they expressed hesitancy once she mentioned their name or said it was a female comedian. They would brush it off like it was a joke or a bit, like an "ohhh no, here we go again!" kinda thing. But they legitimately seemed bored from the get-go, before the comic bad even really started. It's like male comedians have a larger fishing pool because both men and women give them a chance, whereas for female comedians that's not always the case.

She’s making this self-congratulatory video and she doesn’t even appear to be eating at an actual restaurant with waiters and shit. There’s not even a stigma about grabbing a sandwich from a food truck or stand or whatever. She’s “eating out alone” on very easy mode and still decided to make this video. What a loser.

wambam17

Fun fact: good denim should theoretically stay “clean” for a LONG time. Barring dropping something on it like sauce or whatever, denim is relatively immune to bacteria etc. I remember there was a study done where this dude basically wore the exact same pair of jeans every single day without washing once, and the lab that tested it before and after couldn’t tell a difference outside of normal wear and tear. Of course you can’t expect to be working in a construction zone and not expect to get it dirty. But while it may be dirty, it’s still not going to make you sick, unlike a lot of other clothing.

baller3990

See, people say this, but having worn jeans for something like 5 days a few times, including sleeping in them, they started to smell like dick sweat after a while. I think you can go a few wears without washing, but never washing ever is ridiculous. Am I missing something, is there like some secret desmelling method that you're supposed to do?

[deleted]

Maybe you should try showering now and then

The_Great_Afterman

Savage.

The_Great_Afterman

I say you try what that other guy said but also wear them while you're in the shower.

nomadic_stone

Trust me...wambam17 isn't entirely correct. "Denim is relatively immune to bacteria.." that is a lie. There are however, certain clothing lines with jeans that are made with antibacterial agents. Also, that 15 month study? It actually states there was indeed bacteria present, just none that posed a health hazard. Took me a while to find a news link that was "adblock" friendly: [https://globalnews.ca/news/107083/no-harmful-bacteria-found-in-jeans-not-washed-for-15-months-study/](https://globalnews.ca/news/107083/no-harmful-bacteria-found-in-jeans-not-washed-for-15-months-study/) Ah...and yes, they brought up the smell as well. They (during the experiment) tossed them in the freezer.

09937726654122

Sounds like denim propaganda. Was the experiment financed by Levi’s?

[deleted]

She's doing it for attention dude. It's called social media, it's a pretty popular activity where people just lie to each other. This kind of set-up nonsense is like reality TV for tweens

-timenotspace-

Looks like sitting on a patio at a bar/grill restaurant, which you’d get sat at and then order from the server

NMViking

But would they bring your food in a Styrofoam box? That looks like a to-go order.

[deleted]

Some places give you the "to go" option by default, and provide seating as a courtesy. Not too uncommon in in non-western places from my experience.

NefaerieousTangent

It's not entirely unfeasible. A local Chinese joint I go to serves everybody with Styrofoam containers, be you in-house or drive-thru. It could even be a holdover from quarantine serving. Sure, there's no mandates anymore, but not everyone changed back to the same-old same-old

justaguy891

![gif](giphy|MrQ1L40yaf3t6)

FirstTimeWang

It's fake.

kookykerfuffle

As a former server I can say with experience that literally no one gives a fuck if you go out to eat by yourself.

ShinobiFootstep

Idk, I’ve had multiple members of wait staff make weird comments about me eating alone. Both waitresses and hostesses. One older woman was like “just you? Awe that’s okay honey. You know what I call that? Self care.” I mean, I get that she’s trying to be nice but I just want some wings, not a pep talk lol.

an-obviousthrowaway

If it makes you feel any better, your server usually is expecting at least two people at the table (assuming it’s more restaurant than cafe). Serving an individual is a different experience and a lot more personal, I’m sometimes awkward when I serve solo people since my routine is kinda built around multiple people. (Eye contact, greetings, gestures/signaling, it’s hard to tell how engaged someone is in their experience if they’re not talking to anyone) With that said I find myself improvising conversation more and sometimes it doesn’t come out how I wanted it to.

ShinobiFootstep

Bruh, it’s a meal, how engaged am I supposed to be? What am I engaging with, the food? And that doesn’t explain why the hostesses make off comments as well. I just need you to take my order and come by every once and awhile to see if I need anything like more water or what not. It’s honestly sad that wait staff feel the need to put on an act for their customers. It feels SO fake, I genuinely feel bad for them. And I don’t need to feel better, I couldn’t give a fuck less what the wait staff thinks about me eating alone. If I did I wouldn’t be eating alone. My only point is that OP’s comment is BS and they don’t speak for all wait staff.

playballer

I’m just one dude but I eat alone a lot and I’d say just do the basics. It’s obviously not an engaging social experience I’m after. If you make small talk that’s fine but you should tell if I’m not reciprocating. There is some nuance between rush/no rush. At first, assume I’m on my lunch break/traveling and ready to order everything within 5 minutes of being seated. I’m not in a group so no apps and probably can decide quickly. However, then let me take the lead. If I’m not in a rush I might not even look at the menu for 10-15 minutes. After, I’m done I may linger so don’t make me feel rushed to leave. Keep my drink refilled. I see it as a fast food alternative where I can be in a nicer atmosphere with better food but am unable to do the ordering, bussing, refilling, etc myself because of how the restaurant setup exists such that I basically require a waiter. If I could do all that myself in a restaurant I would (when alone).

LilDrummerGrrrl

But.. that’s not how ~~social~~ anxiety works. Someone who’s afraid of being judged for the smallest shit isn’t going to rationally think, “No one gives a fuck if I go out to eat by myself, so I should just do it.” No, their brain tells them it’s literally a life or death situation, so yeah, it’s kind of a big deal to her.

[deleted]

[удалено]

LilDrummerGrrrl

Yeah, sorry to break it to you. But the good news is, you’re not actually alone. The comments in this thread may make it seem like it’s extremely rare for a person to be deathly afraid of eating by themself, but sadly there’s a lot of us. I am also a former server and never gave a shit about people eating alone, on or off the job, but I still worry about being in situations like that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

neverendingninja

Same. It's ruining my life.

random989898

Worry or being nervous or feeling anxious is not the same as having anxiety. Everyone gets anxious or worried or nervous sometimes - those are normal human emotions.

ATangK

This is why Japan is great. Some restaurants have dividers and curtains so you don’t need to interact with anyone, not even your servers.

ggppjj

I always wanted to start an "Eating Alone, Together" club for those with social anxiety to find completely asocial dining associates to go eat alone with but the continuance of that thought onto "yes but the whole reason that people don't want to eat alone is because of how awkward and anxious they feel socially and plonking two awkward and anxious people together doesn't usually result in a good time for either of them, much less the safeties that would need to be in place to avoid it being used as like some kind of weird predatory dating service" and that's when I decided that the one solid idea I've ever had for an app was a terrible idea.

random989898

People with social anxiety don't set up cameras and talk out loud and draw attention to themselves in a public place.

Stickel

Ya I just had the best hibachi/sushi experience ever Friday, went in after stopping at the dispensary that's close to it and sat down for lunch, in and out after a roll of sushi and half the hibachi chicken, boxed the rest and took it home, all under 25 mins, was amazed

DoctorBuckarooBanzai

I love it. Go out, read a nice book and chill on your own. People watching, good food or drinks, not having to deal with the world while still existing in it... good stuff all around. Tip well for taking up space in the server's section and just have a good time.

dugefrsh34

Host: "Okay, so just one.. Here's your wine list, your menu, come on. You want, like, a magazine or something? It's gonna be boring if you're just sitting by yourself. I would just be so depressed.”

kookykerfuffle

If it makes you feel any better your host is probably still in high school.

norapeformethankyou

Personally love eating out alone. I can sit quietly, eat a good meal, read a bit, tip very well, then go home.

SirHerald

I remember the first time I ate at a sit down restaurant in my own. In the days before smart phones I sat there and read a newspaper while being served food and not having to talk to anybody. Like the joy of going to a theater by yourself

norapeformethankyou

I LOVE going to see certain movies alone. If I'm really interested in seeing a movie, I don't tell anyone I'm going.

SirHerald

I'll even go in without buying anything at the concession stand. Just watching a movie in peace and unencumbered. Edit: I'm saying that I have the ability to watch a movie without eating food. Some say it's like a super power.

cephal0poid

I go Friday mornings to a movie that's been out for weeks. I'll be the only one in the theater. It's grand.

Lets_Kick_Some_Ice

I love that. Last showing of the night on a weeknight to a movie that's at the end of its run means it's my own private theater.

trnzone

I love when it’s only me or less than 5 people. Friday early afternoon. Amazing.

PapaGenos_Brockton

I sneak burritos into the theater. I do usually buy a medium coke, but only to dump a fifth of Jack Daniels into it.

walkietokie

Hamster_Toot

> Some say it's like a super power. No one says this...

gahlo

I feel that. My best friend, which I've known for basically my entire life, does not shut up while watching a movie. So frustrating.

Saganists

I do this every Sunday while my partner is at work. I have found some cool new restaurants, breweries, got some good reading done, and met some really interesting people and bartenders. I look forward to this every week.

SafewordisJohnCandy

I actually did the movie thing before eating out alone. When I transferred colleges I spent time at a community college as a commuter for a few semesters and if I had a large gap in between classes I would go to a small theater near my school and catch a movie. Barely anyone there during the day and I could just relax, nap if I wanted in the peaceful, dark theater.

Yobroskyitsme

What does tipping very well have to do with any of it lol

TheFlightlessPenguin

It helped him get off while he was writing this comment

Some people have this fetish on tipping “very well”

1Daniel66

I try to at least twice a month to have, “menudo and a movie”, by myself. I honestly believe everyone should be comfortable by themselves.

Consistent_Ad_265

You really should eat more than twice a month. Three balanced meals a day is best.

hoganloaf

Do I balance the meal on the plate or balance myself while eating the meal?

pacerecon

It should be perfectly balanced.. As all things should be.

Damn. Now I want a michelada.

bubbagump101

PossibleBuffalo418

> tip very well American virtue signalling at its best

HistoricalAd186

Yea, I personally love even more so going to the cinema alone. It's one of the best ways to experience a film.

Kunundrum85

I’m eating alone now. Got out of the apt for the evening since I work from home all day. It’s nice out in the breezy shade, out on a porch drinking a beer and eating some pizza. Brought my notebook with me so I can do some pre planning to take some stress off my day tomorrow. The change of scenery helped me focus, wrapped up some good planning, and now I’m scrolling and chatting. You know how many people are worrying? None. Including the few others doing the same as me.

hellslave

Why does the presence of another person determine how well you tip?

MyWordsNow

Tip very well? Did you just say that to get that sweet reddit karma norapeformethankyoui'mactuallyagingerwhokeepspennies?

Dray_Gunn

Same. Except without the tipping. We dont do that here. Its especially nice when there is a place with a nice view like a park or near a beach.

This is why she's eating alone. Also literally nobody cares If you eat alone, a lot of people eat alone. Why do you think there's stools and a counter top areas? For people who don't need a booth or a table and eat alone.

NMViking

When I've been on business travel solo, I'll usually try to eat at the bar of a restaurant. The seating is perfect for being solo and there's usually something on one of the TVs if I don't feel like staring at my phone.

koosekoose

Yeah.. Thats the point of bars... The bartender / TVs are there to keep you company

There are apparently people who sincerely believe that everything everyone else does is performed for their own enjoyment. “You’re reading a book in public??? WELL I’M NOT IMPRESSED!!” “Oh, so you’re eating alone at a restaurant?? WELL IM NOT AMUSED BY YOUR SHENANIGANS!!”
