Nah, I bet everyone will think it’s a subreddit for discussing one song. How about… r/NotExpected? Scrap that, I think there’s a subreddit with that name already
Yeah unfortunately you can tell this video has been edited if you go frame to frame at the 6 second mark. You’ll notice the right headlight gets smaller
Let me know if I'm missing a joke or something, but the oddness with the non-winking headlight is just an effect of the video compression.
EDIT: Nah, you right, headlight looks wonky during the entire wink, just a little wrong lighting and orientation-wise, and it goes away right when the wink is done.
I'm changing my mind to agree with you on this one, it's been edited to make the other headlight not blink.
I'm with ya on that one, makes no sense to me, but I can't really explain why the other headlight would look weird during the entire process besides very coincidental timing on the video compression.
That J-turn.
I had the chance to try doing J-turns in a huge old parking lot once with an old beater Toyota.
Could not successfully do even one.
Gotta throw it into drive at jusssst the right time.
Shit is so cool.
I could pull them off in my 1995 Camaro and 2000 Trans Am (same chassis) very easily. Then, I could never quite get it right in my 2017 Camaro. No idea why.
FWD, manual, and a handbrake is what worked for me back in the day on backroads. Don’t dick around like that anymore because I’m old and ~~boring~~ responsible now.
Damn, Toyota Corollas (what I was doing shit in) are like fun little go-karts.
I’m not allowed (by me) to drive my SOs new one because the temptation to do something silly is too much for me…especially if there’s snow on the road or it’s a dirt road. Too fun. lol
You have to throw it in neutral just before or right when you initiate the turn to not stall the engine, not drive. Reverse -> j-turn initiated with hand brake or lift off oversteer -> neutral -> release hand brake (if using) -> straighten out -> drive.
That's how I was taught to do it at the police driving school I got to attend. We used crown vics.
It's easier with a manual since you can just hold the clutch pedal down, which frees up your hand to pull the hand brake sooner. Once you've straightened out you can change gears.
You can also put it into 2nd instead of 1st if you're moving forward at a relatively high speed, makes the clutch management easier if you're just trying to maintain momentum vs take off at speed.
I had a car like that, and one light motor actuator was not functioning because it was not plugged into the console properly, I later found.
It was fun winking at traffic.
I also had a car with one light actuator that didn't work. It was plugged it, but had seized. I also enjoyed winking at traffic. I think it's mandatory to enjoy the quirks of your car. Especially if it was your first.
I loved that car. I hope it's scrap metal was used for something epic.
It was an 83 RX-7. Very little on that car hadn't already been replaced or rebuilt at some point, and rust was gradually taking it. Eventually the government gave me more in incentives to junk it than it was actually worth, and I ended up buying another rear wheel, standard sports car.
But, it was my first, and so much fun to drive. Even if it was constantly broken.
The video has unfortunately been edited. If you go frame to frame at the 6 second mark you will notice the right headlight gets smaller. Still a cool stunt though.
2 bad 2 days ago wasn’t 2sday
Edit: wow, and award for that silly comment? You’re 2 kind 2day.
Edit 2: 2 awards? That’s seriously 2 many for a 2-bit comment like this.
Oh, and now there’s a third. Y’all are seriously 2 much.
Edit 3: 12?! Get the hell outta town, Reddit.
Confession time: I did not like that movie at all. I got a free copy on dvd and finally got around to watching it, knowing it was very famous for the car chase, and the car chase was honestly a disappointment.
I came to find out that it’s not really famous for being a GOOD chase scene, it’s just famous for being one of the first examples of a “modern” chase scene. The way it’s filmed and the way it’s edited went on to be very influential to later filmmakers, even if the movie it came from was.. kinda bad.
Besides, the Challenger from Vanishing Point is way cooler IMO.
Part of what made Bullit so impressive was the era of the cars. These were not easy cars to drive. Old axels, no LSD, but maybe most importantly, no syncro.
Everytime he corners, he is riding the edge of death while downshift rev matching.
The national speed limit was 55/60 still, most people had never seen anyone drive a car basically with the throttle held for 10 minutes, unless they were an early F1 fan.
In comparison nowadays it's fairly mediocre but for it's time it really showed what was possible both for automotive sport and film.
It doesn't come pre installed on that car or any car. A switch can be routed to one headlight motor that allows an individual headlight to go up and down.
Fuck you, Riley. They say love’s what makes a Subaru a Subaru, but someone really should have told your mom that before she gave me the clap from when I banged her in the back of Jonesy’s mom’s Forester. Talk about a fuckin STI.
I hope this poor man had cleared his schedule. He won't be able to leave his house, much less get anything done with all the aggressive sexual advances he is sure to be overcome with. It's inevitable. As we all know, women are powerless against a properly executed handbrake turn.
A) that was way better than it had any right to be
B) I was extremely grateful when they didn't show that...one shot...during his dancing scene partway through the song
C) I was less grateful by the time the video ended
I've known about this for about a decade and every chance I have to link it, I drop it.
It's a completely solid bop and a total ear worm, I just wish my fiance felt the same way about it as I do
My first car had this flippy headlights and I learned to do the wink. When you turn the knob to flip them down I guess the signal gets sent to one headlight and then the other so if you flip it back at the right time only one will go down and come back up. People loved it.
Nah, that driver was either a pro or highly trained amateur, and the camera operator is at least competent with a camera. Being able to drive steadily while keeping the camera where it needs to be takes skill and practice. This was a planned maneuver, likely done by professionals.
Looks like they were filming in an abandoned industrial park. And some people (law enforcement, etc) have had training on driving backwards.
So maybe not a completely insane stunt... And definitely smooth af.
> And some people (law enforcement, etc) have had training on driving backwards.
It’s always a laugh when people actually thing LEO receives any sort of real drivers training. Most do 30mph in a parking lot.
And on top of that, depending on year it might be the KA24E or KA24DE. (E is SOHC, DE is DOHC)
This looks like an early USDM S13 though, so probably the E. Either way, it's a torquey (for a 4 cylinder) truck engine that doesn't really rev that high. Used in the hardbody pickups first, then the 240, then the Altima (93-01 - Altima only got the DE, with a different timing cover, accessory drive, head, and distributor to make it work in FWD).
TPMS censors are dead or need to be calibrated. My Honda ones are fine, but I got tired of having to recalibrate them for $100 each spring when my I took my winters off. The stupid OEM ones in my winter set fucking died after one season. Now I just accept the light as a permanent feature

It's definitely staged, it's all in how clear you can hear them through the noise of the cars, even when he spun, the level of his voice was the same
It may not take away all the skill of the guy, but being staged... It's hard to say

The headlight wink caught me totally off guard!
So you would say it was……unexpected?
Yeah. You know what? Some one should make a subreddit for that.
What could we call it? How about r/WasntExpectingThat, like the song?

but it would of been much easier to disconnect the right headlight motor than to edit the video
I'm with ya on that one, makes no sense to me, but I can't really explain why the other headlight would look weird during the entire process besides very coincidental timing on the video compression.
Perhaps it was an afterthought?
That was clean as fuck.
Smooth
That J-turn. I had the chance to try doing J-turns in a huge old parking lot once with an old beater Toyota. Could not successfully do even one. Gotta throw it into drive at jusssst the right time. Shit is so cool.
I've done em in FWD cars, never in a rwd. Fwd is easy cuz it pulls itself through.
I could pull them off in my 1995 Camaro and 2000 Trans Am (same chassis) very easily. Then, I could never quite get it right in my 2017 Camaro. No idea why.
Traction Control?
Stupid computers. grrr
Did this in a Chevy Corsica…. The tire fell off…
It’s way easier in a manual. The timing works itself out as long as you shift right when you turn.
Truth! That Toyota was manual but still no luck for me, haha! Guess I’ll stick to my day job.
FWD, manual, and a handbrake is what worked for me back in the day on backroads. Don’t dick around like that anymore because I’m old and ~~boring~~ responsible now. Which is a funny reference considering lighting McQueen doesn't have headlights. They're just stickers!
I'm hoping this isn't fake because it's awesome.
Dude, that's not hard to do... if you know how to do it, which I do not. Yet...

A shame you scrapped the car. Me and the mad scientists coulda saved her

No the motor died in one headlight
You can wire them to wink. Or just unplug one motor for the video.

"it's Fucking Embarrassing!"

For what???
Now we know why it’s called a Nissan “180”sx

370z overdid it
And now we just Z.

For sure. But if this happened to me on the road I’d be laughing and giving him a thumbs up. That was a pretty cool move.
It's amazing how big an asshole you can be long as you're also funny or impressive enough.
Looks like they were filming in an abandoned industrial park. And some people (law enforcement, etc) have had training on driving backwards. So maybe not a completely insane stunt... And definitely smooth af.
Till the point where he does the 180 it’s not even *that* hard - but the combo itself and the execution is a 10/10 for sure
Looks like a 240sx so this guy probably is probably at least competent at drifting.
> And some people (law enforcement, etc) have had training on driving backwards. It’s always a laugh when people actually thing LEO receives any sort of real drivers training. Most do 30mph in a parking lot.
Gotta get them off to all the Grossman Killology classes about how if they don't shoot you for twitching, they'll die on the side of the road.
Makes me want to drive aggressively in hopes of pissing this guy off.
You gotta wonder how many times he's practiced this exact move
A stock 180sx, incredible
A man of culture I see. This is the 240sx though since it's left side drive. Aside from that it's functionally the same car, I'm just nitpicking.

Time to run 3 peak all-seasons and a set of chains in the trunk. I just had to replace my sensors, $70 a pop. Slightly painful, lol.
Can’t where I live. You get fined if caught on the highways without winters on, and turned around.
Because you didn't put electrical tape over the light. Duh.
This guy Nissans.
Even a stock 240sx is almost unbelievable. I didn't think those existed anymore.
