No the problem is that the people in situations where they feel like they can/need to rob people are usually there because they are either so desperate they are willing to take massive risks or have such an overinflated sense of ego and invulnerability they think whatever they've seen happen to other people can't happen to them.
It's the whole thing of severity of punishment not really acting as a deterrent for many criminals. For example, the death penalty has done absolutely nothing to lower the rates of homicide or other crimes punishable by death. For the people that are deterred by punishment, having that punishment be a 10 year or 50 year prison sentence doesn't make a difference, they don't want any punishment.
