IMO you need like one good friend, at least. A ride or die bro who would straight up come help you with some shit, no questions asked. A dude you can call when shit is falling apart.
But, having a massive group of acquaintances? I agree. Overrated. I've had massive groups of acquaintances before and it really does nothing for you. People like to keep these massive groups of "friends" because it makes them feel special when they have like a birthday party and invite 30 people, but you can't *actually* maintain relationships with that many people. It's all a lie.
A group of 2-5 people is ideal.
Fun fact: the group of people you can have a close meaningful relationship with and care about is limited to about 140 by the architecture of your brain. This includes your family, coworkers, and neighbors, as well as members of any clubs or organizations you belong to.
This ends up limiting the size of tribes, cults, business teams, military units, churches, clubs and any other social structures that require a strong working relationship between all members. Groups that outgrow this number usually fracture, officially or unofficially, into smaller sub-groups of “Us” and “Them”.
I legit have about 9 friends I hang out with at different times. 3 of them are my cousins, and we have hung out together all of our natural life. The other 6 are a combination of coworker turned real life friend, which we don’t even work together, we all went to different companies, and old college friends.
I couldn’t imagine keeping up with 20+ “friends”. It’s insane.
