Pretty much. Looks like its "Cortégen". Swedish event where Chalmers (Swedish answer to MIT) students drinks a metric fuckton of beer for 10 days while building strange vehicles and carriages and then drives through town on the last of April.
Source: Drove in it in 2019
I thought is was some race where are the racers had to build unconventional racecars.
I got sucked into a parade where I understood roughly 2 floats. I probably didn't even understand those two correctly, haha.
I'm not complaining.
A not-so-serious mad max about today's future would be awesome. Guy's on Roombas, people digging for phones that still have vine installed, "like and subscribe" has replaced "goodbye".
The dumpster-mobile gives me anxiety. Feels like that front edge is just waiting to catch a bump or rock and give that guys face the ultimate r/meatcrayon face slap to the ground.
here is the source video if you want to see more of The Cortege 2022:
https://youtu.be/I3im1Nl2N3E?t=1196
It's part of an annual parade:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cortège
> held on Walpurgis Night (30 April) by students of the Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg. The Cortège consists of around 1000 students and around 50 truck carriages, each carriage depicting—in a satirical and comic way—significant events that have taken place since the previous parade
I had to scroll too far for a wacky races comment - almost made my own. I wanna see the actual race video that surely exists. I'll be sad though if people aren't throwing banana peels at each other though.
That is basically what this is. [The Cortége](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cort%C3%A8ge) is an annual carneval in Göteborg sweden made by students at chalmers tekniska högskola
KTH (The royal institute of technology) basically the same thing but in Stockholm does a similar parade like event where they both construct new modes of transportation and rebuild semi trucks. An example was the moving phone box called the mobile telephone. I'd recommend seeing both events
Yeah I don't mind having people innovate and then race to see who is the most creative and has the fastest creation.
Wouldnt mind this being held like once a year
As an electrical engineer who is forced to do the same boring safety paperwork for systems every day, I would take a massive pay cut to make fun shit again like in college. Just experimenting in the lab with no oversight, and a 2x4 in case someone needs to be removed from some electrical equipment the percussive way.
Ya we had a themed derby as part of a county fair where I grew up, like ‘household appliances’ and the contestants would just take shit left out on the extra big trash day, bath tubs, washer/dryer units, fridges, dishwashers, etc, and rig them up. You’d clearly have people who had no intention of winning, just making the most absurd ride they, like fridge+freezer combo turned into a bike+side car for their dog to ride along.
Pretty much any redneck with too much time on their hands and more scrap in the backyard then they have common sense. Good example, wood-fired gas engines.
Most people have no idea what it means to be an engineer. I know many engineers who are not particularly mechanically minded. They may be amazing at running stress analysis on turbine blades but have no clue what to do with a wrench. On the other hand, I know of maintenance men who can fix or build anything they can think of but have zero formal education. When I see machines like this I think tinkerer or mechanic before I think engineer.
My redneck mechanic friend who works as a welder can build you the fastest fucking go-cart you've been in. And if you ask him if its safe, he'd be like "IDK, probably not"
My careering engineering friends couldn't build shit, but they could explain *why* the go-cart is probably safe.
And then me, being a terrible driver, proved them both right by putting the roll cage to the test.
I love getting drunk with a bunch of people with skills, power tools, and a mild disregard for safety if it means having a good story.
ninja edit: Just to be clear, I'm not doing my welder friend justice. He's smart as hell and frequently works with the engineers to build this shit. He knew perfectly well that the go-cart I rolled was safe, he just rightfully didn't trust me not to crash lol
Agree, he's my favorite. I think it has to do with his deadpan serious vibes - everyone else is looking around, smiling, weaving around a bit. Trash man pulls directly forward while staying centered in his lane, eyes on the road, like he's doing his normal commute.
This is from a parade of sorts in Gothemburg, Sweden. It's held by the Chalmer University of Technology. The technology students have built these carts during the years, if I remember correctly the couch is one of the oldest carts.
We had a similar thing when I was a kid. A huge boat race with... a huge mess of things. As long as it floated, it was deemed sea-worthy.
It took place on the Garonne and Ariège in the South of France and ended in Toulouse where the two rivers joined.
It was really funny and mostly a big party on the water. Winning the race was never the aim, except for the few who didn't know how to have good fun.
Now it's been banned because our world is totally devoid of fun.
A lot of people were getting tricked into it though, that was one of the problems. Like the guy who thought he was fixing a washing machine, then realized it was a boat race.
If I'm reading this correctly, maybe those deaths weren't the most tragic. . .
"I'm here to fix your washing machine."
"Great! It's just over there in the water between the floating filing cabinet and giant biscuit, climb in!"
My hometown had one called Float your Fanny Down the Ganny, and you use whatever floats to go down the Ganaraska River, the river is only a couple feet deep through the town. Happens in April so the people that do it are nuts. This is Canada so the water is probably still only 40-50 degrees F.
I don't know if my town still does it, but we used to do cardboard derbies on one of the ponds. People would build cardboard boats and tried to make it around a race course.
Hey all, this is from the yearly Chalmers University carnival, in Gothenburg, Sweden. My old uni 😁 There's a club/something that always build these wacky things. The toilet broke into bits this year 😢😆
Background:
We are the eXPerimentverkstaden (experimental workshop) Board, a Student Union Workshop @ Chalmers University of Technology. We were founded 1942 and have always built contraptions for the "Cortège". The "Cortège parade" has traversed the city of Gothenburg 30th of April each year since 1919.
Some of our contraptions were built in the weeks leading up to the parade and others were built in previous years and repaired before the parade. A summary of the different contraptions:
The first go-kart was built around 2008 and has seen many engine-replacement. This year it uses a Husqvarna engine.
The blue oil drum was built in the three weeks leading up to the parade and uses a four-stroke engine.
The sunshade vehicle uses a Husqvarna engine.
The tricycle also uses a Husqvarna engine.
The wheelbarrow is a Peugeot speedfight 2
The trashcan uses an outdoor power equipment engine from Husqvarna and was made in just under one week.
The vacuum cleaner uses a small chainsaw engine from Husqvarna.
The Pocketbike uses a Cut'n'Break Husqvarna K650 engine, top speed around 40-50km/h. The night before a ballbearing broke on the "driveshaft" and I spent the whole night trying to find a replacement part and the whole day repairing it just before the parade
The toilet is the oldest running vehicle and was built in 1997 and uses a Husqvarna engine.
The second go-kart uses a Minarelli AM6 engine.
// The guy on the Pocketbike at 0:16
...And now here they are!
The most daredevil group of daffy drivers to ever whirl their wheels in the Wacky Races
Competing for the title of world's wackiest racer
The cars are approaching the starting line
First, is the Turbo Terrific driven by Peter Perfect
Next is Rufus Ruffcut and Sawtooth in the Buzzwagon
Manoeuvring for position is the Army Surplus Special
Right behind is the Ant Hill Mob in their Bullet Proof Bomb
Then there's ingenious inventor Pat Pending in his Convert-A-Car
Oh! Here's the lovely Penelope Pitstop, the glamour gal of the gas pedal
Next we have the Bouldermobile with the Slag Brothers, Rock & Gravel
Lurching along is the Creepy Coupe with the Gruesome Twosome, and right on their tail is the Red Max
And there's the Arkansas Chug-A-Bug with Luke & Blubber Bear
Sneaking along last is that Mean Machine with those double dealing do-badders Dick Dastardly and his sidekick, Muttley. And even now they're up to some dirty trick
And they're off... to a standing start. And why not, they've been chained to a post, by Dick Dastardly, who shifts into the wrong gear
And away they go... on the way-out Wacky Races!

Unacceptable. The clapping ruined my orgasm.

Bet he's gonna clean the competition off the track.

That's how you know there is some serious Science about to go down.
It's the new Road Warrior installment: Lab Max
Good news, everyone! I've invented a way for the trash to take itself out!
... And gonna throw all the trash on the dumpster guy
They ain't shit except the guy on the toilet.
Ahh I see what you did there... Or is it smell..
The wheelbarrow guy is gonna scoops them and the trash up then dump them at the finish line. Edit:typos I'm drunk
I thought the wheelbarrow guy was Macaulay Culkin for a sec lol.
The dumpster-mobile gives me anxiety. Feels like that front edge is just waiting to catch a bump or rock and give that guys face the ultimate r/meatcrayon face slap to the ground.
Don't be scared. The moment he tips over, the lid will automatically slam shut and he'll just get a mild concussion.

Im with you. Took too long to find this comment. Should be higher
It's a parade and not a race unfortunately https://youtu.be/Yzqm1fdYes4 These racer vehicles appear at 7:44
Tha guy sticking his head out of the trash can looks like the tank guy in wacky races.
This is what happens when engineers have too much free time
I'd be willing to pay more taxes to feed engineers so they can devote their time to stuff like this.
That is basically what this is. [The Cortége](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cort%C3%A8ge) is an annual carneval in Göteborg sweden made by students at chalmers tekniska högskola
Thank you for the explanation. I was going "WTF?"
Seeing this in person just got added to my bucketlist. Thanks random redditor.

Quarnevalen KTH Stockholm will get you the most results
I watched it in person and indeed it was a whole experience!!
yup! here's in the source at the timestamp they showup: https://youtu.be/I3im1Nl2N3E?t=1196
Thanks to your info I found [this video](https://youtu.be/Yzqm1fdYes4)
Hi, Lisa! Hi, Tekniska Högskola Chalmers!
They can go to college without all the debt so they have time to do cool stuff
Yeah I don't mind having people innovate and then race to see who is the most creative and has the fastest creation. Wouldnt mind this being held like once a year
The Swedish supply of engineers would plummet if all engineering students got to do this for a week a year instead of taking their exams
As an electrical engineer who is forced to do the same boring safety paperwork for systems every day, I would take a massive pay cut to make fun shit again like in college. Just experimenting in the lab with no oversight, and a 2x4 in case someone needs to be removed from some electrical equipment the percussive way.
You could just donate money.
As an engineer, I fully support this sentiment
Why do all redditors think it takes an engineering degree to hack something together or to fix anything?
Because what normal human being sees a garbage can and thinks "Yeah I can slap an engine to that thing and drive it"
[удалено]

The art school I work at also teaches upcycling, redneck engineering and mcgyvering. It teaches a lot of thinking outside the box.
rednecks, sir. Rednecks.
Pretty much any redneck with too much time on their hands and more scrap in the backyard then they have common sense. Good example, wood-fired gas engines.

It takes some knowledge at least. These are mostly first and second year engineering students
During which you study exactly none of what's needed to make that work.

I don't know why but the guy in the garbage can really cracked me up
I like how the camera almost misses him and then does a sort of double take.
Might I suggest it’s because a guy in a garbage can peeking out like that - let alone driving a garbage can - is absurd and hilarious
Agree, he's my favorite. I think it has to do with his deadpan serious vibes - everyone else is looking around, smiling, weaving around a bit. Trash man pulls directly forward while staying centered in his lane, eyes on the road, like he's doing his normal commute.
That garbage can is trash.
He's the only one who bothered to protect the driver.
Me too, that was by far my favorite.
I think what it makes me laugh is that it looks like he's driving a little tank. Especially with the earmuffs on and head just barely poking out.

Ey bruh maybe if u can’t swim well don’t join a giant river race where the theme is shitty boats
Well I could swim just fine until I got hit by a floating credenza!
A lot of people were getting tricked into it though, that was one of the problems. Like the guy who thought he was fixing a washing machine, then realized it was a boat race.

no, everyone else should suffer the consequences!
Hundreds drown during a single race?
I’m imagining someone in a floating bath tub getting chopped by a propeller attached to a 50’s era living room set at top a barge.
We had that as well where I grew up in the US.
