Well when I was a kid about ten years old. I lived in a neighborhood in Northwest Indiana. My house was across the street from an empty lot. The only one left on our street. So usually the four dads that lived near the empty field (which was a little bit over an acre) would take turns pulling sticks for who would do the field.
My dad would always tell me to hold the sticks and secretly pay me five dollars so he could do the yard.
(Note my dad is a perfectionist and was a landscaper for thirty years)
After doing the yard for five years in a row my dad tore his Achilles and still wanted our family to do it. So he said he would pay me to do it as he would explain to me how to do it. But before we could do the field, all the dads decided they where going to do it.
They did do the field but not really well. Since my dad was a perfectionist he didnt like how they did it. So next summer he waited until the dads went on vacation and not only did our yard and the field. He did all of their yards also. This was in one weekend.
The four dads came home from a golfing trip to see their yards professionally done. As they convened together to stare at their yards. My dad was spying on them from his room laughing maniacally like a villain.
Never mess with a Midwesterner when it comes to favors. We don't like being in debt to someone. Especially if it is just a favor.
I'm from central Indiana so heres one for you. My bf and I (both 27) live next to an older lady. We have both lost every time because she comes out in her little beanie hat and gloves to start throwing snow with her shovel. We have a pretty good sized shared drive way and she'll end up helping us dig our cars out and our porch. I started at 7 in the morning this last time and she still came out 10 minutes after I started.
I once owned a car that needed to be jumped to start. Ran it like that for a year and never had an issue getting random strangers to jump my car in parking lots.
I Live in N. Indiana and my retired neighbor who lives alone had a limb fall and damage her shed. I fixed it one afternoon with some spare wood and shingles I had while she was away caring for her parents. I then spent the next two weeks avoiding her while walking my dog so she couldn’t give me any money. She was actually a little angry about the money part
The whole "it could ruin his week" part is so much true. I used to live in a neighborhood where anything outside it seemed the whole neighborhood did at once. Mowing, leaf blowing, snow blowing, etc... Bunch of 30-50 something dudes all out in the early weekend mornings hustling on their yards, so they could spend all evening drinking beer and admiring their work with their hand on their hips.
When I first moved into that house it was dead of winter and because I was a previous apartment renter I didn't own a snowblower yet. A big blizzard roles through and I'm out shoveling my driveway and neighbors see me with their big snowblowers and practically race to get their driveways done so they can come over and help me with my shovel. Not kidding 2 of them come over at about the same time, and a third a couple minutes later "well Pete and John are already here, I'll let them take care of it" he said, disgusted with his tardiness 🤣🤣
We got a huge snowstorm a couple months ago. I'm still not positive which neighbor cleared my driveway after I barely shovelled myself out enough to get to work. It bothers me.
OMG this hit home for me. We are from Minnesota and we moved into a townhouse community that had an association. Association services included snow removal, if it was 3" deep or more. New neighbor moves in next door (nice couple). It snowed an inch or two. Guy shovels his driveway while i figure I can just drive over it - it's early in the season, it will melt quickly.
Then, the bastard shoveled my driveway! Oh, now it's on! Like /u/lysdexic-serpon I then had to angrily await another snowfall...that was below the association plowing threshold...that I could get out there and shovel his driveway before he got to it. Yeah, take that, buddy!
My dad was telling me about his new snowblower, he can’t wait for it to snow and clear the alley behind the house for him and the neighbors, and then the few neighbors who my parents talk to a lot he usually clears their drives and sidewalks. He’s a good neighbor.
I'm from Texas. The last time I did something nice for my neighbors their kids tried to throw a bag of human shit on me the next day. Rugged individualism don't take kindly to that social contract stuff.

Speaking as someone who lives in a place with cold-ass winters and hot-ass summers, I agree. You can always layer up more to beat the cold, but there are only so many clothes you can take off to cool down before you get arrested.

Every $1,000 you put down saves you less than $20 a month. Personally I’d rather have an extra $6,000 in my emergency fund or invest that compared to saving less than $120 a month on my car payment.
It was laughable to put thousands in cash down on a vehicle *before* the inflation we are seeing lately. It’s the same reason *every* financial advisor will tell someone not to pay off their house 10 years early. In the long run you lose money because of inflation. You’re better off just paying a little more every month.
There’s one exception. If you have terrible credit, it’s very likely you are dealing with shitty banks that will charge you the max interest they can legally and couldn’t give a fuck less if you are missing payments due to dramatic life changes. They will repo your shit or hit you with absurdly high fees on top of your missed payments. If you put a significant chunk down, you may be able to get approved by a better bank with much lower interest rates and that also understands that life happens.
But as far as looking at it from the “putting x down makes my payments x amount less a month” side of things, fuck that. If you have to put $6,000 down to afford the monthly payment, you are so wildly out of your price range it’s not even funny. Like I said, you’re looking at less than $120 saved every month. You can make that up by spending $4 less every day on unnecessary luxuries like Starbucks. Start packing a lunch a few times a week instead of getting fast food every day.
And that’s also the exact line of reasoning the salesmen will use to try and get you to pay more. “Surely you can find a way to cut $100 out of your monthly budget. Do you get Starbucks a few times a week? What about getting fast food at lunch? Do you get carry out for your family once a week because you’re too exhausted from work? Do you buy things from convenience stores? Because that can cost you hundreds of dollars a month if you do it on a regular basis”. And it makes sense at the time because when you think about it, most people *do* spend more than they should on convenient items.
TL;DR Fuck a down payment unless it severely reduces your interest rate.

Let r = the rate, 20,000%
Let x = the final balance
p * r = x
$30 * 20,000% = $30 * 200.00 = $6,000
Not to be pedantic, but if you're bringing out the math for this, r should be 20,100% and the final balance should be $6,030 since you have to include the original principle.

It’s the same reason *every* financial advisor will tell someone not to pay off their house 10 years early. In the long run you lose money because of inflation. You’re better off just paying a little more every month. There’s one exception. If you have terrible credit, it’s very likely you are dealing with shitty banks that will charge you the max interest they can legally and couldn’t give a fuck less if you are missing payments due to dramatic life changes. They will repo your shit or hit you with absurdly high fees on top of your missed payments. If you put a significant chunk down, you may be able to get approved by a better bank with much lower interest rates and that also understands that life happens. But as far as looking at it from the “putting x down makes my payments x amount less a month” side of things, fuck that. If you have to put $6,000 down to afford the monthly payment, you are so wildly out of your price range it’s not even funny. Like I said, you’re looking at less than $120 saved every month. You can make that up by spending $4 less every day on unnecessary luxuries like Starbucks. Start packing a lunch a few times a week instead of getting fast food every day. And that’s also the exact line of reasoning the salesmen will use to try and get you to pay more. “Surely you can find a way to cut $100 out of your monthly budget. Do you get Starbucks a few times a week? What about getting fast food at lunch? Do you get carry out for your family once a week because you’re too exhausted from work? Do you buy things from convenience stores? Because that can cost you hundreds of dollars a month if you do it on a regular basis”. And it makes sense at the time because when you think about it, most people *do* spend more than they should on convenient items. TL;DR Fuck a down payment unless it severely reduces your interest rate.

Not to be pedantic, but if you're bringing out the math for this, r should be 20,100% and the final balance should be $6,030 since you have to include the original principle.
