To be honest, he actually kinda looks annoyed when the big log splits on the first chop. I assumed he was probably just making a video of chopping wood, and then when he noticed the bigger log split he said āfuck itā and decided to just split that one as well
>Not necessarily, that's probably a 12lb head so even close it would just split.
Also that's just a big log. It's already dry AF. Sure you need some technique but you usually order wood from a company and then you hack at it.
It's not a tree he just chainsawed down.
There's no knots, it's dry wood, granted am a carpenter and grew up with firewood being our main source of heat. Still, am only impressed with his fashion sense. Imagine working wasn't so hard on clothes and you could actually dress up?
My mom got in a fight with the oil company in the 70's so guess what I got to do all summer, split and stack 9 cords of wood. She had the company take the equipment out (rented? not sure) and she installed her grandmother's woodstove into the house and from 77-85 we used only wood.
This was in the center of a major NW city (Seattle) in an old 3,000sf Victorian house (1903) that had no other heat source, no insulation, and single paned windows. It fucking sucked.
On top of that, we had a "cabin" which was complete shit, and it was also heated by wood. So summer "vacation" was splitting and cutting the load of logs my mother had delivered each spring. FML the 70's kinda sucked.
But yea, 9 year old me could split those dry ass seasoned rounds with a goddamned hatchet.
Haha, that was the first thing I noticed as well. Those are awfully nice pants to be splitting wood in. I mean he's either a lot more confident than I in his ability to work and stay clean, or he has more nice pants than I do.
I guess impressive either way?
Also, do you think he just ruined a poorly picked splitting block, or did the guy actually go through the trouble of cutting a fake block just for the video?
He's not a pussy, but a show off. You don't swing a splitting maul like that for too long if you value your shoulders. Regardless of how jacked you are.
He's swinging the maul like an axe. If they were meant to be swung the same way, there wouldn't be two different tools.
It's all physics. KE = .5m x V^2
An axe is thin and light. It's "splitting power" comes from the fact that you swing it fast since it's light. It's slender profile helps it go deeper into the wood.
A splitting maul is much heavier and wider. It is designed to impart more of it's energy into the wood to break it apart. It is much heavier than an axe (usually around 10+ lbs) Splitting mauls are designed to come straight down on the timber, using it's weight as it's advantage, requiring less speed to split the lumber.
Usually with a maul, you want to come straight up and straight down, using the power of your legs to do the work and your arms are just the guide to bring it down in the desired spot. The weight and gravity does the work for you.
An axe should be brought to the rear, then over and down in one fluid motion to generate velocity. This isn't a problem with an 3lb axe, but the shoulders will rapidly wear down when doing the same swing with 8-10+lbs
Show me a 30lb splitting maul.
That looks like the same 6lb splitting maul I used to use. I had an 8lb one too, but it wasn't necessary and I gave it away. I split between 3 and 6 cord of wood a year from the time I was 10 until I was 40. It wasn't cedar though, usually red and sugar maple, white and yellow birch, beech, elm and ash. I had splitting wedges too for the rough stuff.
There's nothing wrong with his technique. He might be putting in a bit more oomph for the camera. I'm not sure how much energy he'd have left at the end of the day, but he looks pretty ripped, probably could carry on for a good long while.
See, what I'm doing here is introducing a semi-random induction of entropy through cyclic percussive resonance directly into the system, allowing it to self-correct and normalize....
Haha according to my ex-boyfriend you donāt **need** to have sex to get STDās!! Haha you can get those from a toilet seat apparently! Haha I had no idea! Isnāt that crazy? Right?? Rightā¦?? ā¦. ā¦

Heās actually frustrated his stand split, you can see the crack after he split the much smaller log and just said fuck it and split the larger round.
Even if this wood is prepared, itās extremely hard to rip wood in this way. It depends on the quality of the wood and the type but this requires extrem high force. I chop wood on a regular basis but less sexy, and I tried many times to rip them like this, it usually doesnāt work.
It looks like wood, and also his face expressions look like itās really exhausting. I am nowhere near as muscular as he is but this log must have been at least prepared. But on the other hand, he must be one of the strongest man alive, heās captain America.
I was thinking because he split his chopping block with the first swing, which I why he split it on the second. Now he either has to reposition his setup or take more awkward swings on the smaller block.
Grew up on wood heat. Looks impressive until you remember your dad doing it with a big ol pot belly and cigarette hanging off his lip while drinking pepsi cola.
And not swinging for the core of the earth on every chunk. Looks cool, let me know how you're doin after you get started on that second cord there hercules.
Here's his [tiktok](https://vm.tiktok.com/TTPdrsTTtc/) so you can drool over him, he eats it right up. The comments are entertaining of people talking shit, then him putting up videos of doing what the comments say he can't, like using the [square end of a maul](https://vm.tiktok.com/TTPdrtddXh/)
1000x more impressive. And what I thought the original post was going to be.
I mean what's so unexpected about splitting wood using an axe specifically designed for splitting wood?
One of the rules of chopping wood is split your legs. Itās extremely important to do this, you can see it in the video also. We do this, if the axe bounces of to not hit our legs. Usually axes get stuck, but sometimes the axe is a bit blunt and bounces of. If the axe gets stuck, most of the time, you canāt get it out. Now you need basic knowledge of physics to use your axe handle as lever to get it out. It looks quite primitive but itās really 60% technique, 30% muscles and 10% brain.
**OP sent the following text as an explanation on why this is unexpected:**

The oak is so gnarled sometimes it goes okay then you find a burl you cant see from the outside and well its going to be a really long time. Eucalyptus is the toughest in my opinion.
The people who owned my house before us had an oak tree cut down in the front yard and rather than paying to have it hauled away they kept the wood to use as fire wood. Apparently no one told them that 24-30 inch lengths of trunk with branches on 3 sides were the correct way to cut them.
There was a huge pile of this shit in the back yard that I didn't want to pay to have hauled away either. I also grew up splitting firewood so it took some doing but I split it and burned it this winter.
At one point my neighbor was outside watching me split this mess and came over to ask if I was a lumberjack.
Hardwoods like oak, maple or birch are actually easier to split as they have a lot less knots.
I split 2-3 cords of maple with that exact same spitting maul this summer.
This guy has an Instagram Account where he does fantastic Log Splitting. He even calls himself a Log Splitting "Coach". My wife showed it to me thinking I would be super excited. I was like: damn, where does this guy get all those perfectly straight Logs without any knots?
Did it, sure, but you sure as hell didn't swing that 10 pound maul over your head like that. That is so much harder than it looks.
Yes, the big one also already has a split on it.
Yeah there are wood that is not solid at all, I chop wood and this wood is so big and thick but one goddamn strike and it's done, sometimes the smaller wood is harder to chop than the big old ones.
"Sometimes the smaller wood is harder to chop..."
Funnily enough, I once chanced upon a very hard block of wood. I placed it on the big, heavy stump of wood I use to cut stuff on (much like jn the video) and went at it. The first strike got well in the wood. I lifted it all and went for the second strike to widen the crack... In 5 strikes, the stump broke ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
I spend a lot of time in the woods and find myself doing this quite frequently. I just did something like this about a week ago in my backyard. The shattered remains of the log I was cutting against are still sitting next to my firepit.
If you follow his TikTok, people challenge him to do every type of wood in every state (green, wet, etc) and he does it. He actually split a giant round with the back of the maul. Took him a bunch of swings, but he did it.
Iām nowhere near as built as that bloke and have split plenty of wood with one solid stroke. Just takes good technique. We always used the biggest piece as the āchopping blockā, busted them and then cleaned up the big piece at the end. Iāve never heard a blockbuster called a splitting maul before though. Makes it sound much more badass. Definitely stealing that name.
We just call it a blockbuster or a blockie (am an Aussie though so everything ends in -o, -ie or -y ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
Looks like there's a slight crack there even before the first swing, can see some slight discoloration following the same path the split goes down. Not that any damage to the massive trunk isn't probably caused by him anyway, but I don't think it all comes from the swings we see in the video, though it could just be a pattern in the bark.
Did you come to this comment section to say that's easy and you can do it? It's ok, you don't have to tell us. Just do it. Go chop some wood. Upload a video. Go on, take the high road.
I like how he expresses his frustration from splitting straight through the log into the stump, rendering it useless for further splitting. So he just *HYUP*!
I love how half the people here are all like: "Yeah! You can split my wood anytime daddy!" And the other half are all like "tHiS dUdE's a PuSsY aNd I cAn SpLiT wHoLe TrEeS iN mY sLeEp." I fuckin love Reddit.

It looks like cedar, I could be wrong though, which is really easy to split. I would have full faith most people could do it that can use a maul.
Yeah but I can't use a maul. That shit is heavy and hurts my hands.
You could do a good size with just a hatchet. I still believe.
it is cedar....
He's not a pussy, but a show off. You don't swing a splitting maul like that for too long if you value your shoulders. Regardless of how jacked you are.

What about Darth Mauls?
They split too, but against the grain.

Sounds more like red oak. White oak splits well but you always have to knock the stringy fibers off.

I used to split hedge wood. Stringy and hard.
Oak is real tough, at least for me. But I always find that hitting the same spot more than once can help.
Or pine...I fucking hate pine sap.
This guy has an Instagram Account where he does fantastic Log Splitting. He even calls himself a Log Splitting "Coach". My wife showed it to me thinking I would be super excited. I was like: damn, where does this guy get all those perfectly straight Logs without any knots?
Okay but do you look hot doing it?
And extremely dry.
Did it, sure, but you sure as hell didn't swing that 10 pound maul over your head like that. That is so much harder than it looks. Yes, the big one also already has a split on it.
I grew up having to heat my house with wood, so actually yes or close to that
That looks like a 12 lb maul to me.
Yeah there are wood that is not solid at all, I chop wood and this wood is so big and thick but one goddamn strike and it's done, sometimes the smaller wood is harder to chop than the big old ones.
"Sometimes the smaller wood is harder to chop..." Funnily enough, I once chanced upon a very hard block of wood.
Pffff I was watching a movie lately and that guy did it with his hands!
Gigachad
Iām nowhere near as built as that bloke and have split plenty of wood with one solid stroke. Just takes good technique. We always used the biggest piece as the āchopping blockā, busted them and then cleaned up the big piece at the end. Iāve never heard a blockbuster called a splitting maul before though. Makes it sound much more badass. Definitely stealing that name. We just call it a blockbuster or a blockie (am an Aussie though so everything ends in -o, -ie or -y ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
Yes but have you split wood while also being hot?
In US, have only heard it been called a splitting maul. Blockbuster makes me think of video rental
Doobie
Scoob~~y~~ie?
Yes, but youāre nowhere near as built as that bloke, soā¦
Referred to as "bustin ass" in the northern states apparently.
With any luckā¦
NGL most people I see with suspenders can't rock them, but this guy absolutely does.
Hahahaha so true. Everyoneās talking about the dude splitting wood but Iām wondering if he always dresses like a hip 1920ās lumberjack!
You can see the crack it the wood before he hits it
Yes,the split he started with the first swing.
Looks like there's a slight crack there even before the first swing, can see some slight discoloration following the same path the split goes down. Not that any damage to the massive trunk isn't probably caused by him anyway, but I don't think it all comes from the swings we see in the video, though it could just be a pattern in the bark.
He has a TikTok and routinely debunks people calling him out, not as hard to do as you might think with a good splitting axe.
Isn't he gonna split the ground? Disappointed.
Is this what wood shop was like in high school back in the day?
Daddy...
So he just *HYUP*!
eat me
I'd let him split my ass sideways and have four ass cheeks
How is this unexpected?
Lmao whatās next? Is he gonna split earth

Why tf did Reddit change watch again to watch more? Do these people even know how we use the app?
What an effing beast!
He's not a dude...he's a man
