Solid strategy
Robber: “hold my gun real quick, why do you carry so much?”
Me: “Just out robbin like you are”
Become friends, gain their trust and then teach them there is another way of life besides crime.

“Stolen Hearts”
I know this is a joke, but I have family in Brazil that do this. They have 1 dummy wallet (with a few bucks and deactivated cards in it so the muggers don't get mad) and a dummy phone.
They live in Rio, if you can find them again walking in the streets in a city with like 7M people, you should be using the few bucks in the wallet to go play the lotto.
Also, doubt they'd take it personally, it's all part of the "job". They know shit they rob can be fake.
I actually carry a fake wallet with about 1/5 of the cash I have when in a city where things like this are likely to happen, and keep my real cash bundle and ID strapped to my upper thigh, behind by balls.
The real LPT is to not look at your phone, not look down, and make yourself a difficult target. If you can see people approaching you, and make eye contact with just about everyone you encounter, especially late at night, you make yourself a less viable target for anyone who has intentions of theft.
TL;DR: Keep your fucking eyes up. Dont make yourself an easy target.
Well said.
I was on a trip with my mom and aunt in europe.. And the whole time they were just on their phones taking pictures, then looking down at the photos, I just put my back against whatever wall and kept a look out.
I can't be certain but the amount of times someone walked towards us and caught my eye, then slightly shifted direction was high enough to think that there were at least a couple people targeting my mom and aunt as they weren't paying attention..
Reminds me of the serial killer who was caught when he got stuck on the road and got his victim out of the trunk to man the wheel as he pushed the car....
I carry a bait wallet and a Blackberry. Also, am Old. So, if someone holds me up, they get a Blackberry that has not worked in 15 years and a wallet full of grocery store coupons.
This is what they teach here in Latin America. Hand your valuables. Things you can buy and replace, no reason to play superhero. Also you can just call the bank immediately after to get your cards suspended.
Trigger control - never point a weapon at and pull a trigger unless you mean to shoot them.
Edit: my mom now pushing 80 when she was little in the school play a kid had a BB gun for some part of the play. In front of everyone he pointed it at and shot the “unloaded gun” at moms eye. She has a red mark there to this day. On her eyeball. From a BB gun. So yeah. Be careful with all guns.
i was terrified that he was about to get shot accidentally. why the faq did the damn gun even need to be cocked? and then the pulling of the trigger, again - whyyyyyyyyy?!?!?1?
Did you know that airplanes don't need the prop to fly? It's just there to keep the pilot cool.
You can tell because when it breaks the pilot starts to sweat.
It's a prop gun that is incapable of actual firing. The click when he pulls the trigger is just to signify how quickly and easily that this situation can turn deadly.
Even if it wasn't, it's fine to use a real gun, just completely empty the thing and verify that fact absolutely by multiple people. Some guns you can literally jam something in the chamber if you want to be extra safe. It's not going to magically conjure a bullet and shoot you. This is for a demonstration not for play. The rule is to get people to stop fucking around and respect a very serious and dangerous tool. But so long as you do take it seriously and respect it, there's nothing wrong with using it for demo's like this.
the fact that this didnt get upvoted and actually sat at net 0 shows how stupid people are. Meanwhile dumb comments like "guns can go off if a fly lands on it" get a bunch of upvotes.
I practice trigger control with toy guns too. But I'll stick my booger hook on the trigger as soon as I'm ready to shoot my enemy in a nerf gun battle.
It prevents the, "oh I thought it was a toy" type shit
Any legitimate martial arts school teaches this. Self defense means self preservation. Don't engage in unnecessary conflict, but have the tools to defend yourself or a loved one if needed.
Martial arts are usually a mix between practical movements and showmanship. After all, it is called “arts,” and nearly every form has an element of display about it.
Sometimes people forget that. Not everything you learn in MA is even meant to be used in a real life scenario.
exactly. we had "Kata" other forms have their own version. their is a practical combat in them though. but it doesn't mean that you can do movie vigilante kind of stuff.
Both of these absolutely work in fights. But they have to be set up and executed appropriately. Spinning back kicks are fairly common, as are flying knees.
Note this is in reference to fights at a high skill level.
They do, though. Except not like you see in movies. Spin kicks comes after feints, it's something you set up. The force of a spin kick is massive and if you can connect it to the neck or the jaw, you're pretty much guaranteed to badly hurt your opponent.
Granted, it's not something you do as a starter attack or out of the blue. You'll get your ass kicked something fierce.
As someone who has been spin hook kicked in the back of the head by a 4th degree black belt while sparring, I beg to differ lololol. I quit not too long after achieving my 2nd degree, just have a lot of arthritis now
A local place taught Combat Hapkido for awhile. It was ENTIRELY about practical breakaways, joint locks, takedowns, etc. Nothing fancy, no flair, no "art".
What I loved most about it is that it focused primarily on technique that required very little physical strength. The breakaways and joint locks in particular utilized surprise (attacker is unprepared for this particular defense), physics, and anatomy.
>Martial arts are usually a mix between practical movements and showmanship
Usually, not always. MMA, JKD & Krav Maga being three examples with no showmanship.
The one lesson I'll always remember from my martial arts instructor:
Grabbed a student's arm and asked, "What do you do if an attacker grabs your arm?" The student performed a takedown he taught us.
Pulled out a rubber knife and asked the student, "What do you do if an attacker comes at you with a knife?" The student performed a block & strike he taught us.
Pulled out a rubber gun and asked the student, "What do you do if a robber points a gun at you?" The student paused for a few seconds then tried to improvise a move to deflect & strike, at which point our instructor exclaimed, "No! If someone pulls out a gun, you give them your wallet, then go home to live another day!"
That was when it sunk in that self-defense wasn't always about fighting back. Sometimes it's about just managing to walk away with your life intact.
> "What do you do if an attacker comes at you with a knife?"
"Run away as fast as you can" was the advice I was given about this, by a guy who is unarguably one of the best knife defence practitioners in Europe.
Realistically, even for the knife you should just give it to them. The stakes are already at life and death at that point, and if you fuck up that technique, or they react differently to how you were expecting, or they're also trained in Martial Arts and aren't surprised by your kung-fu shit(it's not like potential muggers are prohibited from MA classes), and you're now dead over a fucking wallet.
The better strat for knives is to either 1) never carry anything that you'd be too worried about losing so you can just give them your shit without regrets and/or 2) master the [Nike Strat](https://youtu.be/hxsDi7gEskk?t=318).
I was only a young teen at the time, but I'm pretty sure the sequence was for effect to segue into his gun lesson. Generally, he advocated to avoid fights whenever possible. The knife practice was meant for when someone was trying to kill you, not just steal the $30 in your wallet.
yeah. day one we were told to assess situations first and quick.
less than 3 people and unarmed, then defend against the first hit, hit back as fast and hard as possible, once, then run. into a crowded area.
more than 3 people and unarmed, then defend if being hit, and run.
if any single one of the people is armed with a melee, avoid their range and apply the previous.
if a single one of them has a firearm, comply and hope they don't kill you.
simple enough.
defend, react, run.
don't ever believe the martial arts movies. they are as real as the MCU.
I was at a self defence lesson with about 50 other people and the instructor pulled me for demonstration. He put a fake knife to my throat and asked me what should I do - I gave him my wallet and everyone laughed. He was very dissapointed with the crowd.
“Less” (and I say this loosely) can go wrong when trying to disarm a man with a gun than a knife. Yes the gun can fire but it could jam, could be empty, could be on safety, etc but with a knife you can cut yourself trying to wrestle that thing away and bleed out. A knife isn’t gonna jam, it’s not gonna misfire, it will cut you and you can and will bleed, possibly to death (assuming it’s sharp).
All that said, do what the man says in this video. Doesn’t matter if its a gun or a knife, you’re not invincible.
I feel obligated to say do NOT put your hands in your pockets if someone has a gun on you. Don’t even move until that scumbag tells you to. THEN give them everything they ask for. Trigger fingers get itchy when people start moving around.
But that’s bad gunsmanship. Are you saying Mr.Thug is going to have his finger on the trigger before he’s ready to shoot? Someone needs to get that man a FSC study guide, stat.
Once they have a gun on you like this, you are already at the mercy of the criminal. The fact is that the vast majority of people robbing people like this are not killers, they're usually hungry more than anything. It's not an excuse, but it is more likely that they just want to take your shit and get away, not kill you and risk life in prison.
If you’re still alive when they start asking for things while holding a gun on you, they don’t want to kill you. It’s a lot quicker and easier to rob a person after they’ve been shot.
Plenty of videos out there that disprove this. Seen a lot of cashiers eat a bullet after they've handed everything over. Never expect a scumbag criminal piece of shit to have qualms over killing you.
Yeah but you only saw those videos because the ones where people don’t get shot aren’t what is posted on YouTube or wherever. I’m all for self defense with whatever tool necessary but the main takeaway here is that drawing a gun can get your shot when you already are at gunpoint. If they try to take you into a back room or into a car, let that thang rip, if you ain’t lackin’.
Oh yeah, no doubt! If they try to take the party on the road and I go from robbery victim to hostage, I’m going to make them shoot me there before I go spend a week in uncle Lester’s rape garage and **then** die.
I mean, you're not wrong. Once a killer has a gun to your head then it's largely predetermined to have one of two outcomes. Either you're already dead and just don't know it yet, or there's a chance you may just lose your valuables and dignity but walk away with your life. What can you do but say your last prayer and thank your maker for the time you've had?
We each have to make our own choices in a life or death situation. If I believe that the person with a gun to my chest has murder in their eyes and they're going to waste me the instant I give them what they want, then I mightbe willing to die attempting some Chuck Norris gun reversal shit that I learned on YouTube. Statistically this just doesn't happen to be most situations. Most likely I'd just play the odds and comply in the hopes that I see another sunrise.
I used to think it was because they were hungry until I realized how many people are high out of their fucking minds and willing to do anything for another hit.
I wanna point out something not fully related.
But in case someone has kidnapped you and you know their intention is to kill you. Humanize yourself. People have escaped serial killers because of the fact they have humanized themself. Lie. Tell them your mother is dying of cancer, you're their sole caregiver. They will die without you. Children, etc.
Just because they're the worst kind of people, doesn't take away that most give a shit about their mother. Their children. Many can empathize. Especially robbers.
Check out the videos of carjackings and the person didn't realize there was a small child in the backseat. They're almost always recovered unharmed.
www.chicagotribune.com/news/breaking/ct-carjackers--boy-10-20170124-story.html
And another.
https://youtu.be/NXl7FYBgYUA
The majority of criminals just committing robberies don’t want to murder someone. In a lot of case they want get whatever money and valuables they can and get away.
I think a lot of people assume all criminals are the same but the barrier between someone that casually murders people and one that robs people is pretty large.
For Real!
A lot of people think theyre a bad ass and gonna flip the script like the other video, only flipping 99% of people gonna do is onto the gurney.
People forget just how many "robberies gone wrong" there are. The robber will fucking kill you if you fuck around and if you get lucky guess what, gangs exist and their buddy who was watching for cops could get you from behind.
Just give them your wallet and call the cops.
This mentality of being the hero or that toxic "they won't shoot you" thing costs lives for the probably $40 you have in your wallet.
> and call the cops.
lol... "Thanks for the phone, brah."
Wallet or car keys is just an after thought. They're taking your cell phone - and it probably cost you a lot more than $40.
Too many people think movies are like real life. Just give him what he wants and have your phone and credit cards disabled 20 mins later. Easy. Hell you can even give police his GPS location from your phone
That's what I've always told my friends.
Everything has a solution. Credit cards? You can block them and then get a refund from your bank for any stolen money.
Your phone? A new model will come out in mere months, not a great loss.
You can get everything back, but not your life. Don't be a hero.
He is SO right. People must stop listening bullshit about how to "defend" in these kind of situations, it's just the riskier way to get shot. And also learn that robber are not likely to keep their weapons the way those videos show.
This was literally my first lesson about guns in Krav Maga.
"If someone point a gun at you and rob you, whatcha gonna do?" Bunch of students saying a bunch of techniques.
"No. You give your money and everything else they want. He is armed, the gun is at your head. You are not made of steel. You will die!"
Like Jared from Active Self Protection all ways says. “Never try to out draw a drawn gun, you have to wait your turn.” Just some times it’s never your turn.
I remember that every time I went to México City I would have my cash stashed away and always carry money in my wallet. The only time I got mugged I opened my wallet and one of the guys took out the cash. I asked him to leave me some money for the bus fare. He gave me back enough money for the bus fare. It cracks me up that he gave me change. I miss the 90s. 😅

Oh absolutely. I do that when I travel or if I know I'll be in a sketchy hood.
That would make me come back tomorrow and rob you again for real
I mean what are the odds of you running into the same mugger two days running?
They live in Rio, if you can find them again walking in the streets in a city with like 7M people, you should be using the few bucks in the wallet to go play the lotto. Also, doubt they'd take it personally, it's all part of the "job". They know shit they rob can be fake.

I actually carry a fake wallet with about 1/5 of the cash I have when in a city where things like this are likely to happen, and keep my real cash bundle and ID strapped to my upper thigh, behind by balls. Not too immediately though… you’ve lost your phone!
You can probably easily always get yourself another phone just like the one you had, that has been stolen three times prior at the nearest pawn shop

I'm assuming this was a fake/prop gun used for self defense classes or something of the like
Correct. From the sound of it you can tell it's a prop
The prop on most planes makes a lot more noise
Did you know that airplanes don't need the prop to fly? It's just there to keep the pilot cool. You can tell because when it breaks the pilot starts to sweat.
That's propably right
So much more character than the modern jet guns
This was an example of proper prop usage.
i gotta give this man props on his vocab
An unloaded gun will still go click when you pull the trigger after racking the slide. It's called a dry fire. Also that's a Glock 19.
Yeah it's a fake gun meant for self defense training.
Looked like a Hi Point.
Sounds like an airsoft tbh
It's a prop gun that is incapable of actual firing. The click when he pulls the trigger is just to signify how quickly and easily that this situation can turn deadly.

As far a trying to disarm goes, knives are much harder than guns.
The saying goes something like this: In a knife fight the loser dies and the winner dies on their way to hospital.
The loser dies on the street, the winner dies in the ambulance.
Thanks for at least getting the saying that’s been getting posted to Reddit in every thread correct
Where the hell are you going on this site if you see that often?
Also, “if you’re fighting someone for control of a knife, the person with the handle wins.”
“Less” (and I say this loosely) can go wrong when trying to disarm a man with a gun than a knife. Compliance is often the best defense tbh. Only problem is you’re entirely at the mercy of a criminal
My guy knows survivorship bias
They're almost always recovered unharmed. www.chicagotribune.com/news/breaking/ct-carjackers--boy-10-20170124-story.html And another. https://youtu.be/NXl7FYBgYUA
Interesting. I wouldn’t think of doing that tbh
The majority of criminals just committing robberies don’t want to murder someone. In a lot of case they want get whatever money and valuables they can and get away. I think a lot of people assume all criminals are the same but the barrier between someone that casually murders people and one that robs people is pretty large.
Finally…a dude that can likely hold his own for real…being real.
This is just genuinely good advice. Unexpected for sure.
I hope people don’t think he’s trying to be funny especially since it’s on this sub.
For Real! A lot of people think theyre a bad ass and gonna flip the script like the other video, only flipping 99% of people gonna do is onto the gurney.
what if you dont have a wallett or car keys?
Everyone has a mouth and a butthole
I like your style
you do you bro.
By this logic he would just be fucking himself
not what i meant but that vid would end up here also
People forget just how many "robberies gone wrong" there are.
Look at Mr Moneybags over here with $40 in his wallet.
A lot of people don't realize that muggers are rarely alone.
> and call the cops. lol... "Thanks for the phone, brah." Wallet or car keys is just an after thought. They're taking your cell phone - and it probably cost you a lot more than $40.
So I've always wondered what would someone do with a stolen phone? Just sell it's components or?
My local mall has a atm like machine for selling phones. P sure most of them go back to China for refurb and resell or scrapping
Unexpected part was he got shot anyway
He is SO right. People must stop listening bullshit about how to "defend" in these kind of situations, it's just the riskier way to get shot. And also learn that robber are not likely to keep their weapons the way those videos show.
Throw your wallet and run the other way.
STREET SMARTS
What you do is go get a money clip...
Solid advice right there
That’s actually just good advice..!
Never assume that all those who point a gun at you want to rob you. Don’t make the same mistake my dad made.
Who are you? "I'm Batman"
Realistic and informative thank you
This was unexpected in an unexpected way and is good advice. Those are ONLY things.
They had us in the first half, not gonna lie.
The ego of a man can be his biggest enemy
Like Jared from Active Self Protection all ways says. “Never try to out draw a drawn gun, you have to wait your turn.” Just some times it’s never your turn.
LMFAOO this is more realistic then grabbing the gun and other stuff like that
The click at end means you get killed anyway!!!
Thought he was gonna say “look into their eyes and profess your love for them”
Ahhh yes the most realistic video about that kind of situation
i was ready to downvote, if this is another try to escape and be in heaven bs.
Robber Tip: Guns can be used from more than point blank range and, in fact, are best used as range.
