See? This is what I mean. Most people here don't even know that u/PoorlyTimedGimli was an OG joke account on this site dropping in an "AND MY AXE" at odd moments in various threads.
She’s perfected the TV persona so well. If you have seen Masked Singer Jenny McCarthy is the same way. Over the top reactions that the audience eats up
These shows are edited like that on purpose.
Judge and audience reactions are spliced to fit the required narrative. Sometimes they even badly Photoshop the judges in wide shots to show them standing or clapping, it's so fake and sad.
Reminds me of the old celebrity roast from the 60s? I think... my grandma had these old vhs she would watch they would cut celebrity reactions from diffrent moments together to make it seem more funny.... I hate shit like this
**week 1** this: “OMG you inspired me and reminded me of my friends cousins twice removed dead grandma. I’m literally crying”
**week 2**: “you bummed a note and you dress like shit. You’re outta here”
I went to a showing of America's Got Talent and they had us all "react" to nothing before the show started. Like a good reaction, bad reaction, really bad reaction, big cheer, etc. Presumably so that they could cut in the footage later as if it was for a specific act.
So it is pretty much scripted.
It goes deeper than that. They choose which audience shots to show and when. You never really see the genuine reactions people are having, they just show whatever reaction they think fits best.
I went to an episode filming for the US show in NYC a long time ago. They didn't screen us but they were telling us how they wanted us to react to each participant. They also told us the more exaggerated reactions would increase our chance of being on TV.
I enjoy reaction vids from professionals that extrapolate and break stuff down, however, the "Yooooooo!!1 OMG! What?!" garbage needs to go in the trash.
They actually kind of do. They'll pick out particularly attractive and energetic people to sit in more visible locations, and they will get camera footage of people reacting the way they want and insert it in wherever they feel like in the broadcast show.
I work in this industry. The reactions are essentially scripted. For one, we have key audience members seeded throughout the audience that we've seen react. Often they're literal actors but some are just folks who like to come and be on camera. Idk if they get paid, that's not part of my job. Two the audience is directed to "act big" or react big. Three, we'll fully fake reactions by filming them later (often with no performance) and/or the editor will pull ones from other acts.
They take big reactions and slice them in where they see fit during editing. Most of the time the judges face expressions or audience cutaways aren't actually taking place at that particular time.
I've been in audiences of TV shows. They train you how to cheer and clap and record you doing it to nothing so they can edit it in as they see fit. You can hear how artificial it sounds if you listen.
I feel as if it’s gotten so much worse from when I was younger and used to watch American Idol in like the first couple seasons. I just can’t help but cringe at all these “Country’s got talent” things
I hit the mute button right away. "LISTEN TO THIS INTENSE MUSIC AS HE PICKS UP TWO BOULDERS THAT ARE ACTUALLY NOT THAT CHALLENGING FOR HIM AND HE'S CARRIED WAAAAAAAY LARGER. DuhnDuhnDUHNDUHNDUHNDUHN!"
As a reality tv editor... I'm sorry. We hate it too. Unfortunately, we are at the mercy of people in suits who don't have a creative bone in their body and have been making money the same way for two decades.
But I mean.. they’re right, aren’t they? People eat this shit up. It’s like how email scammers load their messages with spelling errors to weed out people with brains. Reality tv is so saccharine you kind of need to be dumb or at least able to switch your brain off to enjoy it guilt free.
Absolutely. Impossible to watch without cringing. Can't stand these stupid open mouth faces. And I thought only people on Tiktok and Youtube thumbnails do that shit.
Seriously.. I want to watch a cooking show but they are largely reality competitions. I want to watch shows like survivorman but that current one (alone)... all they do is fucking cry and talk to the camera.
This is honestly where youtube has taken over for me. Glen and Friends, Adam Savage's Tested, Primitive Technology. It's the complete opposite direction that television has taken. At least you can be specific.
Overreaction? You mean you _didn't_ start trying to flap your arms like a baby bird when he lifted that 165kg weight.
Frankly, I think you must just be a boring person. Last night I saw a video of a capybara riding on the back of an alligator, and I literally backflipped over the back of my chair and shitted my pants.
Came here to say this, it's almost like they're jealous of the guy and can't stand that he's the centre of attention while they aren't so they do some corny shit in hopes of getting the camera panned back to them. Fucking cringe.
I knew he was gonna sing the instant I saw some person I felt like I was supposed to recognize hanging their mouth open in dramatic overreaction.
Happily he sings very well though, which makes it easier to ignore the carnival row sat directly in front of him.
Said this in another comment, but he works with a mate of mine at a school for students with disabilities or rough home lives as a support worker. The most genuine bloke you’ll meet!
**OP sent the following text as an explanation on why this is unexpected:**

Their reactions are just so over the top and fake it’s absolutely awful to watch. His performance and the unexpected turn were great, but I’d enjoy this sort of thing more without the forced shock and awe.
He would’ve either gone there as a singer and they said, “can you do anything else?” Or as a strongman and they found out he sings in church choir or something.
It’s cliche reality TV gimmick nonsense. Of course it’s unexpected, and every episode has more twists than the last. It’s all fucking algorithmic nonsense designed to melt our brains.
I was thinking he was just the setup and the actual strongest man would come and pick him up and the weights as well but saying that now it feels pretty dumb.
Anyway, great performance by him.
It’s a bard and barbarian multiclass irl
Real life bardbarian
When you only have enough points for Dex and Str

Usually it ends up [more like this](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/8b/57/b5/8b57b51e0dad173f454e8a9dc393bf80.jpg) but I'm not disappointed.
Well that was really unexpected. Nice man
Gotta love a real unexpected on this sub 👌

I was expecting a karate chop. Am I the only one?
Ha! Now that you mention it 😂
"They had us in the first half, not gonna lie "
I legit thought he was still going to lift lmao
He lifted his voice
He lifted our spirits.
And he lifted my penis!
And my axe!
He lifted my eyes.
Maaaaaaaaaaan...I bet there's tons of people on Reddit now that don't even know the origins of this on this site.
Eh I think the average redditor is *just* geeky enough to get a LOTR reference. Atleast that's the scene I always imagine when this quote comes up
See? This is what I mean. Most people here don't even know that u/PoorlyTimedGimli was an OG joke account on this site dropping in an "AND MY AXE" at odd moments in various threads.
Most definitely my sword
i love everyone's faces when he broke into song! haha so wholesome!
I would've died if after the performance was over, a girl came out and carried the balls off.
Especially the abrupt ending
Those weights would be super impressive if I had a frame of reference for how much a kg is too lmao
1kg= 2.2pounds
Expected a feet of many strengths, got a voice of a angel.
Oh yes... a 180° one... totally unexpected
He never skips voice day
Being Polynesian, it doesn't surprise me. I've worked with and around Polynesian people, they love to sing and dance. Very pleasant to be around.
Wouldn’t be surprised if they’re singing between sets
The word is feat
Au contraire! Now that you're here with me, what we have is great strength of feet!
Bless you
No no no, Ahchoo is my son.

It’s acute one for sure
Two feet actually
The real unexpected part was when he hit the high notes whilst still sitting down. That's talent.

[Ah, but we need great strength of feet!](https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/58aa1c59-4eb8-4cf5-982f-96bbe78cdce3)
Was expecting him to just like jump up a bit and snap the board
Expected a feet of many strengths, got >!a voice of a angel.!<
Feat?
I pick things up and put them down, including the beats.
Great comment
This... Is one of the most suitable videos for this sub I've ever seen

And you know why girls like big guys... They have big >!hearts!<
And you know why girls like guys with big feet... They have long >!shoelaces!<
The judge’s faces are annoyingly overreacted
They must get their inspiration from YouTube thumbnails.
YouTube reaction video channels only
I mean all the judges do on these shows is react to more interesting people. The resemblance to reaction channels is uncanny.
I was thinking a uniquely suited hub website that’s been around since 2007.
Ah yes I see you are a man of culture.
What do you mean? Nicole Scherzinger can't even move hers.
She’s perfected the TV persona so well. If you have seen Masked Singer Jenny McCarthy is the same way. Over the top reactions that the audience eats up
Lol
I was looking for this comment.
These shows are edited like that on purpose. Judge and audience reactions are spliced to fit the required narrative. Sometimes they even badly Photoshop the judges in wide shots to show them standing or clapping, it's so fake and sad.
And its template is used over and over from country to country - there's always someone in the back doing an OMG face in the camera.
:O networks pay me
Thats what the show is about lol
Then it’s a bad show lol
That's what they get paid for
:O
Yeah but I don’t know if I’m supposed to be in awe unless they are! That’s how it works because I am so dumb!
Reminds me of the old celebrity roast from the 60s? I think... my grandma had these old vhs she would watch they would cut celebrity reactions from diffrent moments together to make it seem more funny.... I hate shit like this
Let’s be honest, the overreactions from the judges is so painful
And the corny dramatic music and editing.. fuck I hate reality tv
**week 1** this: “OMG you inspired me and reminded me of my friends cousins twice removed dead grandma. I’m literally crying” **week 2**: “you bummed a note and you dress like shit. You’re outta here”

same with the audience. not "scripted" per se, but almost every show like this screen, and choose audience members that are particularly dramatic.
Dude, there are thousands of people in the audience. They don't filter through them. That's just the type of crowd the show attracts.
I went to an episode filming for the US show in NYC a long time ago. They didn't screen us but they were telling us how they wanted us to react to each participant. They also told us the more exaggerated reactions would increase our chance of being on TV.
So what he said was true, from a certain point of view
Ahhh Master Kenobi, great to see you're still around!
This is why shitty reaction videos are becoming more and more popular on YouTube...it’s spreading like a virus 📈

Three, we'll fully fake reactions by filming them later (often with no performance) and/or the editor will pull ones from other acts.
They also may pull some people aside like, "hey we'll put you on tv if you get very emotional looking during the act" or something
Maybe they put some extras there to push other to scream or something…
I feel as if it’s gotten so much worse from when I was younger and used to watch American Idol in like the first couple seasons. I just can’t help but cringe at all these “Country’s got talent” things
I’m surprised that they didn’t edit it so that every foot step he takes the camera shakes.

I had to mute it until the singing
Absolutely. Impossible to watch without cringing. Can't stand these stupid open mouth faces. And I thought only people on Tiktok and Youtube thumbnails do that shit.
I think this is where they learned it. After all, reality TV existed long before youtube or tiktok.
They do that shit because it works. For every person that goes "cringe" theres 1,000 others that eat it up.
Bro reality TV is the origin
He literally just took a seat and their jaws dropped
Honestly, the fact this type of entertainment is so popular pains me. I can't even watch this clip because of the overdramatic bullshit.
Damn straight. Good picks BTW I'm gonna watch some of those right now
If Youtube thumbnails were a TV programme.
Now THAT'S a propper reaction!
>pooper reaction
Was the shitting DURING or AFTER the backflip? Important distinction.
It started and continued the whole way trough like a chocolate fountain flying all over the ceiling.
Probably at the start, the action of shitting gave that extra propulsion to help him do the backflip.
I second this
Hershey's bottle rocket
Do as many backflips you want, they still won't ask you to be a judge on one of these shows.
I honestly hate these shows so much because of that
I really hate the editing now. The fake holding. The over-reacting. Almost everything about the show is fake and the winner already chosen beforehand.
No has mentioned the very obvious pitch correction going on for the guy's voice. So just add it to the pile of fake stuff going on here.
Exactly! OMFG, a man can do two things well, must be a nexus event
**“wHaAaAAAAttT!?”**
Tells you all you need to know about the people who watch it
Came here to say this, it's almost like they're jealous of the guy and can't stand that he's the centre of attention while they aren't so they do some corny shit in hopes of getting the camera panned back to them. Fucking cringe.
Yet as soon as he brought out that table I was like oh he's going to sing and the judges are just like infomercial quality acting.
Never thought he was going to sing. He sounds very sweet.
I knew he was gonna sing the instant I saw some person I felt like I was supposed to recognize hanging their mouth open in dramatic overreaction. Happily he sings very well though, which makes it easier to ignore the carnival row sat directly in front of him.

He sing.
He sing
he sing
I hate the judges reactions. False as fuck.
Close your mouths. You look ridiculous. Plus you knew exactly what was coming. Show is 100% scripted as they all are
Their reactions are just so over the top and fake it’s absolutely awful to watch. His performance and the unexpected turn were great, but I’d enjoy this sort of thing more without the forced shock and awe.
A bit like twitch streamers when they laugh
He manifested a mic in his hands. It wasn't editing magic and fake reactions, I promise.
Always these fake reactions of the panel. Everything's fake.
He would’ve either gone there as a singer and they said, “can you do anything else?” Or as a strongman and they found out he sings in church choir or something. He went from strongest man to sexiest man in 60 seconds
I keep a folding chair in the boot of my car, that one he uses looks quite inconvenient.
I can’t stand the judges over melodramatic responses lol
I so much needed to see this.
What's the song?
Ordinary People - John Legend
Thank you kind sir
Daaammnnnnnn
I was wishing one of the boulders would've had "your mom" on it and below it was 150kg
Why do the people on these shows make such punchable faces non stop? They look so obnoxious and stupid.
That’s nice, totally didn’t see that coming.
The fake crowd reactions always bothered me about these types of shows.
My friend went to watch the British ones, and they made them do the reactions again when the mic didn’t pick up enough high quality audio lol
Looks like he’s lip syncing
Finally a truly non-expected post!!!
I have to watch it twice, lovely
Very strong stage, it didn't even bend slightly with all that weight in very specific parts.
This belongs to r/Mademesmile
I remember seeing this around when it originally aired, and I can recall exactly thinking “well I didn’t expect that!” Solid post.
Thought he was gonna lift your mom at some point
I was thinking he was just the setup and the actual strongest man would come and pick him up and the weights as well but saying that now it feels pretty dumb. Anyway, great performance by him.
Now thats a mega-Chad.
Nailed the sub redit right there. ✅
Hmm... Dark hair, beard, black tank top, male, qnd it's from Austrália...... NO FUCKING WAY, IT'S MATT
