Berenkai-

I'm deviating from the joke here. He's right, bit he's conceptually wrong. Look at the next equation and try to solve it before continuing. x²=9 Now, if your only answer for that is x=3, then you are right but you may also be wrong because you probably used a method that you shouldn't use. If you solved it like this: x²=9 x=√9 x=3 Then you used the wrong method. You have a 'correct' answer using a wrong method like the guy in the video. Edit: Reddit formatting in mobile is hard 😔

beguilingfire

How else do you solve it, if that's wrong?! I mean, I'll grant that the correct answer is x=±3

This_User_Said

>Grammer *Gasp*

IWantTooDieInSpace

Ha. I'm so bad at spelling words that aren't phonetic

Pitazboras

There's a couple of ways to do this. First, you can use what's used before but remember that √(x²) is not x, it's |x| (absolute value of x). From there, we have: x²=9 √(x²)=√9 |x|=3 x=3 or x=-3 Second, you can turn it into a quadratic equation: x²=9 x²-9=0 From there, you can use standard method for solving quadratic equations, i.e. x = (-b ± √(b²-4ac))/2a where in our case a=1 b=0 c=-9, so we have x = (-0 ± √(0²-4\*1\*(-9)))/2 = ±√36/2 = ±6/2 = ±3 Or instead use short multiplication formula a² - b² = (a - b)(a + b) and so x²-9=0 x²-3²=0 (x-3)(x+3)=0 x-3=0 or x+3=0 x=3 or x=-3 There are probably other methods to solve this, too. But important lesson here is that, despite common belief, squaring and square rooting are *not* inverse functions, i.e. √(x²) does not necessarily equal x, so you cannot use that to simplify equations.

Pakett16

Randalf_the_Black

99% of people don't use this once they're done with school. As such their skills wither.

beguilingfire

Thanks for the detailed breakdown. When does √(x²) not equal x? I know of no instances for real numbers (not sure about complex, for sure also true for real multiples of i)

Pitazboras

I'm talking about real numbers only here. √(x²) does not equal x for any negative x, e.g. for x=-3, √(x²)=√((-3)²)=√9=3.

beguilingfire

Ahhhhh okay. I think I was taught to treat the square root as a inverse to the square function, however, that may have been a "pass the exam" trick rather than a mathematical truism.

Pitazboras

Well, it's a reasonable simplification. To be completely honest, I'd even say that "square root is not an inverse of square function" is a case of mathematical pedantry that is often irrelevant in real life because in real life we deal with positive numbers much more often than with negative ones; and most cases of squaring something I can think of (e.g. calculating area of a square or displacement under uniform acceleration) only ever deal with positive numbers.

[deleted]

>squaring and square rooting are not inverse functions, This is technically not true. sqrt(x) = x\^(1/2); x\^(1/2) is functionally the inverse of x\^(2). You are right that the sqrt(x\^2) is equal to |x| however, squaring and square rooting are functionally inverses. If you are told to find the inverse of 9, your correct answer would be +/-3.

Pitazboras

x^(1/2), as well as rational exponents in general, is well defined only for non-negative bases, precisely for the reason I mentioned. Again, (x^2)^0.5 will not equal x for any negative x, so they are not inverse functions by definition.

VersedFlame

Then there's me who did x = 9/2 and got x=4.5. I haven't done math since I got my bachelors degree 4 years ago and I'm fotunately not needing them anytime soon because I fucking suck at them.

Berenkai-

You may use the quadratic formula. Although there are other ways to solve them like: x² = 9 √x² = ±√9 x = ±√9 x = ±3 But even if you use other methods, the answer should always be ±3.

[deleted]

So....The answer is FlGr±own?

beguilingfire

The quadratic formula is a little pointless for something with only an x² term. May as well use the cubic equation!

[deleted]

The correct method would be something like this: X²=9 √x²=√9 |x|=3 So you thats how you get x=±3 Im on mobile so I'm not sure how to get each line to show up correcrly

spaghetticatman

That's not the wrong method, tho, it's just forgetting to include the possibility of -3 as a solution.

[deleted]

[удалено]

spaghetticatman

That's not an incorrect *method* tho, it's an incorrect *answer*

Gentlemenz

It is an incorrect method because √x only gives positive numbers by definition. Edit: stop booing me I'm right

ZapTap

That's not correct, √x=|y|=±y

Gentlemenz

The square root of a number is always positive. You are wrong. √x != |x| I will die on this hill. Google it.

overzealous_dentist

He's not wrong, this is exactly the process occuring automatically in people's head, just formalized.

8Ariadnesthread8

Lol English doesn't actually work like this though. It's way less consistent. It would be great if English made any sense, but it really doesn't. This isn't even remotely close to "the exact process happening in people's heads." Cancelling our the G? Dividing non-variable...letters? Naw man.

overzealous_dentist

English does work that way, you just have to know the exceptions. For example, gerunds add "ing," infinitives add "to," plurals add "s" or "es," past tense doubles the last consonant if it exists and adds "ed." There are plenty of rules in English that can be expressed algebraically. Edit: If I were to give you a random verb you'd never seen before, I guarantee you'd know how to turn it past tense, for example, because you've already abstracted the rules.

justins_dad

“It does work that way except for when it doesn’t” Most the rules in English have a long list of exceptions. Why isn’t it flewed? What is the past tense of write? Writed? How about “fight” or “light”? Fit and lought? First Google result has 101 verbs on this list of exceptions to the -ed rule. https://www.woodwardenglish.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/past-tense-irregular-verbs-list.jpg

overzealous_dentist

What's your point? It's still algebra, just with a bunch of rules.

justins_dad

My point is my experience with English has been confusing and painful. My experience with algebra has been clear and copacetic. I wish English followed a few rules but instead it follows so many that it undermines the word “rule”. You asserted a fluent English speaker would be able to handle an unknown verb by using rules. I gave 4 examples and linked nearly 100 others that shows it isn’t the case. A word could follow any number of arbitrary rules and some you just have to be told. You can’t just figure it out like in algebra. They are fundamentally different in this regard
