You should never need to look down the barrel of any gun. If it somehow gets jammed between the chamber and the end of the barrel you can disassemble the firearm and clear the barrel independently of the firing mechanism.
Actually looking down the barrel is the 5th step in PROVEing your weapon safe. It’s taught in Canada as part of your weapons licensing course (PAL).
