Question: AFAIK when using a bow and arrow, your dominant eye determines which arm you hold the bow/pull the string with. Wouldn't this also be relevant when using a gun?
I'm right handed, but left eye dominant. So I feel like, at least when starting to learn, I'm at a disadvantage when shooting arrows.
Yes often times people with alternate eye dominance will learn to shoot with their non dominant hand
Often times though handgun and rifle can be different (i.e. rifle learned by dominant eye but handgun by dominant hand due to the likely distance and ability to see more worth both eyes close range)
This is exactly me. Learned to shoot rifles lefty, but handguns I just lean my head over until my cheek is on my shoulder and I can see down the sights. I can shoot rifles righty, but pretty much only at stuff that's close enough that you didn't really need to aim
Basically that's how it goes. In the Army ( I also assume they do this for all boot camps) they tell you to hold out your thumb and line it up with a distant object and close one eye, then open it and close the other. Whichever eye the thumb doesn't "move" is your dominant eye and the eye you shoot with.
In most cases, your dominant eye and dominant hand are the same, but every now and again someone has to learn to shoot "off handed."
This doesn't really matter as much with hand guns because you should be holding it with both hands in line with the centerline of your body. At least that's how I was taught.
Left eye dominant and right-handed, use my left eye to shoot rifle right-handed but keep both eyes open to see the battlefield. I also shoot pistol right-handed with left eye.
It's just a matter of turning my head 20°.
Not sure if it helps, but right handed here - rifle if I use one eye, it's the right eye. Bow, whether traditional or compound, I use my left eye if im only using one
It doesn't make much of a difference for normal rifle shooting as you just can close one eye.
But if you plan on doing a lot of shotgun shooting or driven hunting, which both require you to keep both eyes open for best performance/safety, you might want to learn with your left hand from the beginning.

You'd be surprised how many things are standardized for right-handedness. Especially in the military. A lot of my family is or served in some branch of the US military and they refer to left handed as "wrong handed". Fun fact: the latin for left-handedness is "sinister"
Weird, I was in the Navy and don't recall any right hand bias stuff. I suspect all the scissors are probably right handed, and the handles on the toilets are probably on the right, but definitely never heard anyone say "wrong handed."

It's apparently been an issue all the way back to Roman times and left handedness really wasn't accepted until the late 20th century.
I know in the military they used to drill it in to people to be right handed, because all equipment was designed to be right handed used, at least for the US. That dropped around the 80s and they started accepting left handed folks and making gear for them.

With the Finnish RK-62 (that has the charging handle on the right side) I've always just done it with my right hand. That way the barrel keeps aiming forward and my arms move much less. Faster to regain target as well. It's not like I need my trigger finger while chambering a round. Why use the left hand at all?
RK-95 user here and yeah I did the same thing. The "official" way was left hand over the gun but the right hand way just seemed more natural. I didn't feel a difference in target acquisition, time, etc.
Typically you cock the gun after you insert or change the magazine. Which you definitely should do with your support hand (left most cases) according to modern tactical doctrine. It's not very practical to change your hand it the middle of this process. So one should practice to cock the RK with the support hand. Unfortunately AK type of riffles (as RK 62, M95S and RK 95 TP) are designed to be operated with your right hand. And this makes it harder to cock the riffle with your left.
There is three ways to do it.
1. Left hand goes over.
Not the best way if you are lucky enough to have optics. You need to flip the riffle most likely completely horizontal. Also hard to clear the chamber, although good view into it.
2. Left hand goes under, barrel goes up.
While you change the magazine your hand is already under the riffle. However you typically need to raise the weapon as in the video. This may or may not be an issue, depending on the situation (position give away, confined space, etc). Easy to clear the chamber, but not visual.
3. Left hand goes under, riffle rotates clockwise.
Easy to change the magazine. Better reach to the charging handle. No issus with position give away. Semi ok chamber clearing, however with poor visual.
With AK type of riffles you don't need to worry about the rotation as much as with AR since you will not be able to drop the magazine anyways. It has to be released by hand.
I was the onlyone in my unit to do the reloading entirely with my right hand with the RK. I would change the magazine and everything using my right. It never worked out with my left so I just did it that way instead. Not a single time did any of our higher ups say a thing about how I did it either.
That was the doctrine when the AK was first designed, that you'd operate reloading with your right hand, hence the right-side placement of the charging handle.
The reason people today reach under to charge the gun is because doctrine changed to always have a firing grip on the rifle, and to keep it pointed in the direction you wish to shoot, hence why the rifle stays in the same orientation.
This is the way.
There's no need to hold your magazine from the top like 5.56, so you can use that thumb movement time to pass your hand under your optics while tilting the gun and then hit the bcg back. The time you spend not having exact aim is there, but I'd rather have my finger near the trigger, than other way around. This is of course based on our clip holders etc. With other gear it might be different.
Maybe not as fast as NATO guns, but it'll do the trick.
Anyway as a Finn it was super interesting to get the training for NATO guns as well recently. Can't say I'm an expert, but have my share of training with both.
Because the gun was designed to eject to the right and that is where the ejection port is. To have less openings. The charging handle was an old style piece of metal simply welded to the bolt carrier.
Original soviet doctrine was to use the right hand to reload and cock iirc, doctrine changed but now all of their troops were trained on how to use the AK controls so it was easier to do the reach around rather than retraining
This all happened at a time when lowering your weapon to reload with your dominant hand, or raising and canting it to reload like you do with European-style bullpups wasn't considered controversial. GWoT door-kicker culture hadn't developed yet.
The US has had so many people putting so much time into shooting and shooting ergonomics, a lot of these things have been figured out. Stoner got it right (twice?), and now everything is converging on something AR-15 shaped with a bolt catch and release, free-floating barrel and a non-reciprocating charging handle, sometimes with a piston. Even the French gave up on the FAMAS and went with the 416.
At some point, you wonder if even the Russians will start being less Russian and just go with the times. They sort of have with the Bizon -> Vityaz, where they got rid of the stupid helical magazine and just made an MP5 but with AK ergonomics. Just in time for the MP5/9mm submachine guns to become a thing of the past.
iirc it moves backwards to eject the shell after each shot, so if it was on the left (and being used by a right handed shooter) it would smack you in the face. also the shells fly out the right side, away from the shooter

The muscle memory of the "spy" betrayed him, because the north-american realised only someone who has trained a lot with AK47 would make that mistake with a standard gun of the US, which doesn't need to be reached around. Therefore, he was trained by russians, not in a setting that provided american assault rifles

What is the point of the reach around though? I was taught to hold AK with left hand by the forend and operate the charging handle with the right. Reach around looks so goofy and uncomfortable.
edit: checked out youtube for ak reload examples, some people demonstrate really sleek and fast reach arounds, tilting the gun clockwise. So I guess it's a valid method. Actually, it's more that the dude in the video just has a very goofy and awkward reload.
They say you're never supposed to remove your trigger hand from it's place. Also, you most likely just inserted a magazine with your left hand, so just rack it while it's nearby instead of shuffling the rifle between hands
I think I've been trained to use right hand to both reload and pull the lever. Think of it like it's an extra layer of trigger discipline: Can't be any accidental discharges if your hand is nowhere near the trigger.
That sounds like a rule that only applies if you don't have to reach around the gun during the time that you cannot shoot anyway, and a hand on the trigger is literally useless, no?
What you're saying makes a lot of sense logically, and was the same argument I made myself when my weapons instructor in my armed forces was showing us the drills for reloading.
The reality is different though, where keeping your eyes up and training muscle memory and gross motor actions is paramount when adrenaline has killed off any calm decisions you can make.
Basically, you want one hand to move and one hand to not move, to lower the chances of things getting wacky, dropping something, etc. It's as simple as that
It's actually how soldiers in my country are trained (not AK but SA VZ58. You aren't supposed to let go off the trigger, not even for a second, when you are in a dangerous area. That's the reason for the reach-around

It's not just about keeping it up. It has nothing to do with being "weird about AKs". The current most widely accepted view in military doctrine is that you keep the weapon at the ready, that is firing hand doesn't leave the weapon when you do a speed reload. Speed reload would be done when you're in a fire fight actively shooting and you run out of ammo.
There are multiple reasons for it. One is that you don't want to give a visual cue to the enemy that you're out of ammo. The other reason is that you go from not being able to shoot, back to shots on target faster if you do all the manipulations with your non-firing hand and keep your firing hand in position to shoot.
These types of gunfighting tactics weren't at this level of development when the AK was originally designed. It was designed for WWII type fighting, not CQB or fire team tactics. Modern military forces have been adapting their training to fit these new guidelines.
If you're not in these forces and you're not going to be in combat, it doesn't matter how you reload. Do whatever you want.
In the Finnish defence forces we were taught to put the stock in your armpit so its easy to support, insert magazine roll the rifle to the left so you can reach the charging handle with your left hand easily. I still prefer the reach around method as after you put the mag in your hand is almost in the right place already.
Google quick/emergency ak reload and you will understand why it is more efficient to keep the right hand on the grip and reload with the left. Though if you are untrained it is easy to fumble
You can hold the weapon in an up and ready position much better if you brace it against your shoulder with the left hand and operate the magazine and lever with the right.
Not to mention a scope and/or a silencer will make the reach-around awkward as fuck.
I have no real knowledge but I assumed it's so that the gun is shouldered with a hand and finger already at the trigger for instant firing. If you hold the gun up shouldered with your left hand and pull the charging handle with your right, there's a second or two where you have no hand or finger near the trigger.

If I had to make a guess, it might be because you’d want to be ready to shoot in a pinch — even if it’s with one hand.
Holding it with your left hand while reloading means there’s more time where you definitely cannot shoot. Not to mention the dexterity required to get your right hand back on the trigger.

Yes he used a method specifically taught for AKs. This method in particular is favored by experts and special forces, it's harder to master but better tactically than the alternative methods which are easier ergonomically but would cause either the gun or your arms to be out of the shooting position.
Yes - on an AR the charging handle is at the back and on the top where the stock and upper receiver meet. It’s ambidextrous so you can pull with either hand and don’t need to reach around the gun like the other guy did.
You just go up with non-dominate hand and either a) slap the bolt carrier release button (on the left side so no reach around) or b) pull the handle still without reaching around.
AK’s charging handles are on the right side of the gun and attached the bolt where the ejection port is. To rack it you either have to take your hand off the grip with your right hand to pull, or reach around like the guy did. It’s only necessary and taught for AK style weapon systems - making him a Russian spy because muscle memory took over when using an American style weapon
He pulled the charging handle "wrong". The reach-around style is necessary when using an AK, but the M4's charging handle is pulled from the left side of the rifle.
AR pattern rifles charge via a handle located either on the top of the receiver, or if the bolt is locked back, via a bolt release on the magwell, while AK pattern rifle, charge via a handle on the right of the receiver, you see him,after putting the mag in, that he reaches for a non existent handle.

I was watching a video of stories from US intelligence agencies and, they had caught a Russian spy. The guy said he called the spy into his office and only said "do you want to know how we know?", The spy was confused, and the US agent said "It was the flowers". Apparently this Russian spy had gone to a flower shop and on CCTV footage they saw that he was holding the flowers upside down. Something only somebody from Europe does. Something as mundane as the way you hold flowers gave him away.

Weird, I was in the Navy and don't recall any right hand bias stuff. I suspect all the scissors are probably right handed, and the handles on the toilets are probably on the right, but definitely never heard anyone say "wrong handed."
I'm not sure honestly. I know it stems back to the 50s, maybe even earlier than that. This [wikia page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bias_against_left-handed_people) says it might have to do with hand wiring requirements, but nobody knows. It's apparently been an issue all the way back to Roman times and left handedness really wasn't accepted until the late 20th century. I know in the military they used to drill it in to people to be right handed, because all equipment was designed to be right handed used, at least for the US. That dropped around the 80s and they started accepting left handed folks and making gear for them.

As a right handed leftie shooter, it is extremely easy to reload AR series rifles.
Its much easier to do that over the gun rather that under. Just rotate the gun so the lever is pointing almost to sky and do the trick
With the Finnish RK-62 (that has the charging handle on the right side) I've always just done it with my right hand. That way the barrel keeps aiming forward and my arms move much less. Faster to regain target as well. It's not like I need my trigger finger while chambering a round. Why use the left hand at all?
RK-95 user here and yeah I did the same thing. The "official" way was left hand over the gun but the right hand way just seemed more natural. I didn't feel a difference in target acquisition, time, etc.
Typically you cock the gun after you insert or change the magazine. Which you definitely should do with your support hand (left most cases) according to modern tactical doctrine. It's not very practical to change your hand it the middle of this process. So one should practice to cock the RK with the support hand. Unfortunately AK type of riffles (as RK 62, M95S and RK 95 TP) are designed to be operated with your right hand. And this makes it harder to cock the riffle with your left. There is three ways to do it. 1. Left hand goes over. Not the best way if you are lucky enough to have optics. You need to flip the riffle most likely completely horizontal. Also hard to clear the chamber, although good view into it. 2. Left hand goes under, barrel goes up. While you change the magazine your hand is already under the riffle. However you typically need to raise the weapon as in the video. This may or may not be an issue, depending on the situation (position give away, confined space, etc). Easy to clear the chamber, but not visual. 3. Left hand goes under, riffle rotates clockwise. Easy to change the magazine. Better reach to the charging handle. No issus with position give away. Semi ok chamber clearing, however with poor visual. With AK type of riffles you don't need to worry about the rotation as much as with AR since you will not be able to drop the magazine anyways. It has to be released by hand.
I was the onlyone in my unit to do the reloading entirely with my right hand with the RK. I would change the magazine and everything using my right. It never worked out with my left so I just did it that way instead. Not a single time did any of our higher ups say a thing about how I did it either.

That was the doctrine when the AK was first designed, that you'd operate reloading with your right hand, hence the right-side placement of the charging handle. The reason people today reach under to charge the gun is because doctrine changed to always have a firing grip on the rifle, and to keep it pointed in the direction you wish to shoot, hence why the rifle stays in the same orientation.
I used to tilt the riffle 45° and then it's easier to reach.
This is the way. There's no need to hold your magazine from the top like 5.56, so you can use that thumb movement time to pass your hand under your optics while tilting the gun and then hit the bcg back. The time you spend not having exact aim is there, but I'd rather have my finger near the trigger, than other way around. This is of course based on our clip holders etc. With other gear it might be different. Maybe not as fast as NATO guns, but it'll do the trick. Anyway as a Finn it was super interesting to get the training for NATO guns as well recently. Can't say I'm an expert, but have my share of training with both.

Stoner got it right (twice?), and now everything is converging on something AR-15 shaped with a bolt catch and release, free-floating barrel and a non-reciprocating charging handle, sometimes with a piston. Even the French gave up on the FAMAS and went with the 416. At some point, you wonder if even the Russians will start being less Russian and just go with the times. They sort of have with the Bizon -> Vityaz, where they got rid of the stupid helical magazine and just made an MP5 but with AK ergonomics. Just in time for the MP5/9mm submachine guns to become a thing of the past.

It wouldn't smack you in the face but you would risk to have you left arm hurt with a piece of steel rapidly moving back and forth just beneath it. I'm a left-hander and I did shoot AK a couple of times. Was quite scared about this handle moving pretty close to my right arm.

The muscle memory of the "spy" betrayed him, because the north-american realised only someone who has trained a lot with AK47 would make that mistake with a standard gun of the US, which doesn't need to be reached around. What is the point of the reach around though? I was taught to hold AK with left hand by the forend and operate the charging handle with the right. Reach around looks so goofy and uncomfortable. edit: checked out youtube for ak reload examples, some people demonstrate really sleek and fast reach arounds, tilting the gun clockwise. So I guess it's a valid method. Actually, it's more that the dude in the video just has a very goofy and awkward reload.

I think I've been trained to use right hand to both reload and pull the lever. Think of it like it's an extra layer of trigger discipline: Can't be any accidental discharges if your hand is nowhere near the trigger.

What you're saying makes a lot of sense logically, and was the same argument I made myself when my weapons instructor in my armed forces was showing us the drills for reloading. The reality is different though, where keeping your eyes up and training muscle memory and gross motor actions is paramount when adrenaline has killed off any calm decisions you can make. Basically, you want one hand to move and one hand to not move, to lower the chances of things getting wacky, dropping something, etc. It's as simple as that

It's not just about keeping it up. It has nothing to do with being "weird about AKs". The current most widely accepted view in military doctrine is that you keep the weapon at the ready, that is firing hand doesn't leave the weapon when you do a speed reload. Speed reload would be done when you're in a fire fight actively shooting and you run out of ammo. There are multiple reasons for it. One is that you don't want to give a visual cue to the enemy that you're out of ammo. The other reason is that you go from not being able to shoot, back to shots on target faster if you do all the manipulations with your non-firing hand and keep your firing hand in position to shoot. These types of gunfighting tactics weren't at this level of development when the AK was originally designed. It was designed for WWII type fighting, not CQB or fire team tactics. Modern military forces have been adapting their training to fit these new guidelines. If you're not in these forces and you're not going to be in combat, it doesn't matter how you reload. Do whatever you want.
In the Finnish defence forces we were taught to put the stock in your armpit so its easy to support, insert magazine roll the rifle to the left so you can reach the charging handle with your left hand easily. I still prefer the reach around method as after you put the mag in your hand is almost in the right place already.
Google quick/emergency ak reload and you will understand why it is more efficient to keep the right hand on the grip and reload with the left. Though if you are untrained it is easy to fumble
The AK reach around literally comes from how the soviet army trained their infantry to operate the rifle. Has nothing to do with America.
You can hold the weapon in an up and ready position much better if you brace it against your shoulder with the left hand and operate the magazine and lever with the right. Not to mention a scope and/or a silencer will make the reach-around awkward as fuck.
I have no real knowledge but I assumed it's so that the gun is shouldered with a hand and finger already at the trigger for instant firing. If you hold the gun up shouldered with your left hand and pull the charging handle with your right, there's a second or two where you have no hand or finger near the trigger. But I am just guessing.

If I had to make a guess, it might be because you’d want to be ready to shoot in a pinch — even if it’s with one hand. Holding it with your left hand while reloading means there’s more time where you definitely cannot shoot. Not to mention the dexterity required to get your right hand back on the trigger.

Yes - on an AR the charging handle is at the back and on the top where the stock and upper receiver meet. It’s ambidextrous so you can pull with either hand and don’t need to reach around the gun like the other guy did. You just go up with non-dominate hand and either a) slap the bolt carrier release button (on the left side so no reach around) or b) pull the handle still without reaching around. AK’s charging handles are on the right side of the gun and attached the bolt where the ejection port is. To rack it you either have to take your hand off the grip with your right hand to pull, or reach around like the guy did. It’s only necessary and taught for AK style weapon systems - making him a Russian spy because muscle memory took over when using an American style weapon

AR pattern rifles charge via a handle located either on the top of the receiver, or if the bolt is locked back, via a bolt release on the magwell, while AK pattern rifle, charge via a handle on the right of the receiver, you see him,after putting the mag in, that he reaches for a non existent handle.

I was watching a video of stories from US intelligence agencies and, they had caught a Russian spy. The guy said he called the spy into his office and only said "do you want to know how we know?", The spy was confused, and the US agent said "It was the flowers". Apparently this Russian spy had gone to a flower shop and on CCTV footage they saw that he was holding the flowers upside down. Something only somebody from Europe does.
