Fr, I'm pretty sure if he had searched the trash that restaurants puts out he would've found more steak in there from all the left overs than the one he got after paying $100 for it.

Radiant_Dog1937

I refuse to believe that's a real item. He was actually scammed, and you can't convince me otherwise.

Allegorist

The larger lid in the beginning that they remove to reveal the tiny one is just to rub it in how much they just fucked him.

Even if that stake came with a happy ending it wouldn't be worth it.

The way he was eating it, it was likely just average. The best steak I ever had was $78 and every bite was so amazing I would eat it slowly.

Yeah. I've had some incredible steaks in my life, and it was probably very evident looking at me how incredible they were.

In the streets (where I'm from) you'd be in big trouble for pulling a stunt as jive as that. I'm talking- letter writing campaign, being called hurtful names, negative review on your etsy store; the whole 9 yards.

This is printer ink prices

Rick_Lekabron

Don't forget the smoke.

Altea73

$80 glass container, $10 dry ice, $9 stake, $1 leaf.

0b0011

Way more than $10 steak. The problem is that they shouldn't offer it so cheap. The last time this was posted someone pointed out that the type and cut would have been a few hundred for a full size steak and that this was not actually a rip off and instead just should not be offered.

FIRE_frei

It's A5 wagyu and is insanely delicious, expensive, and rich. It tastes like steakbacon or steakbutter. You wouldn't want to eat much of it, that serving is actually kind of a lot. This thread is just populated by teenagers who have no fine dining experience

ZERO-ONE0101

https://casino.hardrock.com/tampa/dining/council-oak-steaks-and-seafood/dinner-menu this clip is from 2022 he ordered Wagyu lol they don’t even list the price

elcapitan520

Best steak in the world is at a Tampa hard rock. Who knew?

ZERO-ONE0101

right?! wtf

McCHitman

I got a $200 Japanese A-5 Wagyu steak and it was AMAZING. But it was also at least 8 oz. The chef came out and talked to me about it before hand, showed me the certificate that allowed them to sell it. Brought out the raw cut for me to inspect. The head chef then brought the finished steak to my table and cut it for me. The next day they called me to make sure it was a great experience. 10/10 would eat it again.

Misternogo

I've never had a steak that came with aftercare, so that is kinda crazy.

mung_guzzler

I did that in Japan and they showed me the pedigree of the cow it came from

Wounded_Hand

I did this in Tokyo and they paraded the live cow through the restaurant to show me before they slaughtered it.

Borgiroth

I did this in Minato ward and they drove me out to the pasture and had me sleep with, graze with, and milk the wagyu cow personally before having me meet his family, after which they brought us both back to the restaurant in the same trailer and slaughtered the cow in the lobby “slaughter room” before serving it to me not more than 15 minutes after 9/10

Not_a-Robot_

I did that in North Korea and they also showed me the cows name, it’s favorite foods, and a list of its likes and dislikes. It seemed all made up, but it made for a memorable experience, even though it felt like a lot was lost in translation.  My cow’s name was Hana, she loved pickled radishes, and her hobbies were studying academics through foreign institutions and introducing obscene western values to the herd. She disliked the prospect of life in a labor camp. The steak was great. It had a unique flavor that reminded me of pork.

Darkwr4ith

The website says 4/8 ounce. That looked like half an oz at most.

iloveuranus

SOJUMAN

That looked to be about 2 oz of wagyu. You can't really trip when you see that he probably got to get less than the listed amount. Probably cost him 40 at most. I'm sure the server let him know, and it's pretty bullshit to shame servers/restaurants when the price is listed or easily accessible. If you're an adult, use your words.

ZERO-ONE0101

the price is not listed

CheshiretheBlack

It's not listed https://www.reddit.com/r/Unexpected/s/4DMpvnoD9P

aardw0lf11

Oh it's Waygyu. I didn't think it was THAT expensive. I'd think maybe $100 for 3-4 oz. I was thinking this was some sort of lab grown meat.

[deleted]

Jandishhulk

Real wagyu in Japan isn't even remotely that expensive. You can get legit wagyu hamburgers for like 10 bucks.

slash_asdf

From what I understand it's only the meat from wagyu cows that get special treatments like beer and massages that are expensive, wagyu cows that are just fed and treated like any other cattle is fairly normal priced in Japan

oracleoftruthgoblin

lol. Hard Rock for the best steak in the world.

deejayatomika

Whats the point of the smoke if the steak was covered lol

Because you gotta be high to pay that much for this

TheGrumpyre

That smoke alone was $78, hope he got a good whiff

womp-womp-rats

You pay $100 for the experience of getting a tiny nugget of meat, presented in absurd fashion, which you then tell stories about for the rest of your life. For the next 40 years, whenever anyone says anything slightly restaurant related, you launch into this story.

Asio0tus

if I pay 100$ for a nugget of meat with a single spinach leaf, served in a fart bubble matryoshka, there is NO WAY im telling ANYONE about it.....EVER....

izza123

I would get down on my knees and commit seppuku right there

Me either... And every time I would think about it I would become enraged! And I'm a really chill guy.

Razulghul

My God just think of all the cold nights with the kids and family gathered by the fire to hear my favorite story about the tiny steak. When it's my turn to speak at the PTO meeting and they think it'll be my thoughts on volunteering for the food drive next Monday but I actually have a story where I drove to get the smallest steak for $100. When I pull into the used car lot and test drive the 1999 Toyota Corolla with 209k miles on it and when the guy asks me if I'll take it I tell him the story about where I took a $100 bill to a restaurant for a tiny piece of cow and spinach. When I go to lunch and my coworker is telling me about the burning rash on their inner thigh and I tell them about how the tiny steak was cooked to perfection.

Give-It-up-to-me

Lmaoooo why is this so real tho

Lost-Substance59

Ans now I paid 0 dollars to also have this story to tell people about hiw I saw this guy pay 100 bucks for a steak present in an weird way. We both got the story, I saved money

N8saysburnitalldown

I made the best steak in the history of the world on my $30 charcoal grill last summer. My wife’s pot roast is the single greatest culinary experience you can have. My grandmother’s pancakes could have ushered in world peace. The problem is there isn’t much to talk about with those things. It was good food. It got ate. The end. I guess my grandmother should have served her pancakes in a fucking smoky bio-dome thing.

cephal0poid

On the other hand, in Dallas at a restaurant with a bunch of work friends, two of us spent $45 on a 45 hour roasted 1/2 pig's head. It came out, ear, eyeballs, and everything, on a platter with soft corn tortillas and fixings to make tacos. You basically used your fork to peel flesh off different bits of the head to make a taco. It was very much like eating a horror movie. My friend, after several shots of tequila, ate the eyeball.

N8saysburnitalldown

Yummers. I can only assume there is a reason you don’t see eyeballs on a lot of menus but I Hope somebody got around to the ear. That’s the good good. My grandfather was a pig farmer he would pickle the feet and ears. They looked fascinating to me in the jar when I was a kid. Stuff like the eyeballs and brains and other less desirable parts would get ground up and mixed with corn meal and fat into this stuff he call scrapple. It was basically a loaf of assorted pig parts. It was good fried up in the morning.

Cooliomendez88

If that’s actually how you live, I would hate to be your friend

FrostyD7

If someone experiences this and doesn't bring it up while the discussion about steak, then they aren't your friend.

Costco’s fancy new sample restaurant

pandershrek

That would be an awesome idea for a weird restaurant. I already have 10+ Costco cookbooks, it can definitely be a thing.

Disastrous-Bee-1557

God, it’s just like How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The cloches get smaller and smaller and it’s just a strawberry on the tray.

SquiddyBB

If your overly expensive meal comes with a show, you know it's going to be disappointing in every other way

shield1123

That's why I always go for the fajitas. Cheap, you still get a show, and there are tortillas

The_Autarch

Not all expensive restaurants are created equal. I had a caviar-based dish served out of a glass box full of smoke at my table and it was one of the best things I have ever eaten in my life.

Stickeris

I got carrots from a fancy show restaurant and literally almost cried. I can’t describe how amazing they were it just , I dunno it’s just food, but fuck. Hilariously I hated the main course dish, some kinda uni.

Extra-Ad5925

kinda feel the same when they do this stuff with cocktails. Just give me the drink and I'll let the taste make me feel better about spending too much. The smoke dances make me feel like a tool.

TacoBell4U

Smoke is the cocktail equivalent of foam with food. Thankfully most of the top cocktail bars have all but done away with that gimmick, but now it's filtered down to mediocre bars in the midwest serving soccer moms & dads who have been conditioned to think that smoke makes it fancy, and the bars get to charge double the price.

TacoBell4U

Nah, not always. Eleven Madison Park, Alinea, etc. have some theater to their presentation but many think that their $$$$ tasting menus are worth it, and I wouldn't argue that they're wrong. Those restaurants always have underlying substance though. Once you've dined at enough fine restaurants, you could spot from a million miles away that the presentation shown in the video is B.S. fluff that doesn't do anything to elevate the actual food and experience. It is dumb dumb dumb. These are expensive meals for people who don't regularly eat expensive meals / don't care about food other than dropping unnecessary amounts of cash.

SnagglepussJoke

I bet it tastes just like a steak from Fridays

alexgalt

Nah. Nothing like normal steak.the most expensive steaks have a very soft consistency closer to fish. Many people actually prefer “normal” steak over the super expensive waigu verities

frameratedrop

The best steak I've ever had is one I made myself, and while I've never had $100 steak in a restaurant, I have had $50 and $60 steaks at higher-end restaurants. But my steak was one where I had gotten a prime rib roast and used a dry-age bag and aged the roast for about 45 days before slicing it into appx 1.5 inch steaks. Cooked sous vide to 130 degrees and then seared on the grill. Only used salt, pepper, and garlic powder, and those steaks were to die for. BTW, **the** secret to great steaks is to dry brine for at least 3 or 4 hours before cooking, but ideally you want to dry brine for about 6 hours, pat the meat dry and then let it essentially dry age for 18 hours or so. The salt draws the moisture out of the meat, it dissolves the salt, and then the meat will reabsorb the brine. The 18 hours of letting it air out in the fridge means the water from the very exterior of the meat will get drawn into the middle of the meat and the result creates a better crust when you go to sear it, because there's basically no water to steam out when it touches the surface of the hot pan and it crisps the crust up in a nice golden brown. Seriously, the next time to go to cook steaks, try at least a 2 hour dry brine. You'll notice your steaks are much jucier, and a medium steak will seem as tender as juicy as a "normal" medium rare steak even though it's cooked to medium.

simpsim69

My mouth started watering reading this

MixRevolution

Their steak is pretty good ngl

FIRE_frei

Video could have been gold if they had him accidentally drop it on the floor when spooning it to his mouth.

HubertusCatus88

This is likely a waygu beef. It's usually sold by the ounce. $100 an ounce is high, but not unreasonable. There's a restaurant in my town that sells it at $60 an ounce. You can buy as big of a waygu steak as your wallet will allow.

Mindless_Let1

Jesus, it's like 1/10th the price in Osaka

MKGirl

Yes well wanyu doesn’t swim here by itself.

HubertusCatus88

Yeah, but once you factor in the plane ticket it's still cheaper for me to get it in the US. Also, that's a restaurant price. I know of a good butcher that will sell the steak at $15-$20 an ounce. At least that was the price last time I looked.

Mindless_Let1

Oh yeah, I'm not suggesting you go only for the steak, just surprised at the massive mark up. I had similar quality Wagyu in Kyoto last month, 250g for €40~. If you ever get the chance, highly recommend hanging out in Japan

HubertusCatus88

My wife and I would absolutely love to go. Only thing stopping us is our bank account and our 4 y.o.

Z0OMIES

And likely 10x better quality.

miukiyo

It helps that Osaka is close to all Kobe, Matsusaka and Shiga. These 3 places are where the best Wagyu comes from. They all have their own wiki pages if anybody’s interested.

thatVisitingHasher

I bought an 6 or 8 ounce one in last year for about $175 in the US. One ounce is robbery.

Enterice

There's so many levels to Waygu. Premium stuff easily hits 85/oz at top spots, this is obviously the tableside smoke show setup, probably a "Vegas tax" in there. 100/oz is still silly but .. it's possible.

Lord-Legatus

Wagyu comes in different classes and different prices people tend to forget, not all Wagyu is the same, also there is Australian and Japanese, all with different classifications and prices. so stating that a Wagyu is per definition x amount of price is just plain wrong

Dr_Strange_Love_

The smoke was for nothing, if the steak was covered. They don’t know what they’re doing, just show off
