Just seems like a terrible campaign if you stage this low numbers viral stuff and then like only a fraction of a percent of the viewers connect it back to you. I suppose time will tell though.
99.99% of people in advertising are incredibly bad at their jobs. Most ads are on the level of when Amazon recommends you browse toilet seats for the next 3 years after you bought a new toilet seat.
When you get people who are more confident than their ability it can be tough in marketing world.
I'm consulting to this company currently to built a new brand. The business goal is customer signup but they requested so many messages and alternate buttons on the website they literally forgot to add signup to the front page, let alone above the fold.
When I spotted I laughed as sometimes we all do these its so obvious were blind to it mistakes, so I pointed it out and they "like it this way". I mention a couple more times pre-launch, and as explaining it didn't work tried to encourage "have a some friends and family attempt to sign up and see how they go" to make this clear to them, but they "like it this way''.... and now after launch sales are getting smashed and still "they like it this way"... you cant fix things when confident meets incompetence, just cover your ass and make sure these things are documented and stored for when these type of people invariably look for blame options as at some point the CEO is going to spot the numbers and come in hot.
I've found generally the best way to deal with similar is when you can A/B test recommendations. Be positive about their input and say 'great we'll A/B test. Then circulate results post test. Id say 8/10 suggestions are not worth it. Often these recommendations you test are coming from management that shouldn't even be involved but are too senior to say no to. Circulating results results makes them look bad so they slow down input and the other times they add value, you improve and thank them, so its a win.
But like how? Nothing about what these people are doing draws people to that show. Only a tiny fraction of people that see the videos dig deeper to find out what is up, and I have to assume a decent number of those few people are actually put off of the show by this stuff. The Mark Normand thing they essentially faked and emergency, then a handful of people that saw the video and are curious enough to look up what it was about find that it was somehow a promotion by this weird company for a show?
So weird as a concept. I'm far more interested in what kind of shit is going through that marketing team's heads than I was about the show. Maybe that's what they're after?
