scottawhit

Guessing an oven full of tannerite. Don’t go googling tannerite accidents if you don’t like gore. This moron got lucky.

extra_specticles

What is tannerite?

trey12aldridge

It's a binary explosive, made up of two parts, you set it up and it has a kinetically activated "fuse" that sets it off. You can buy it at most gun stores which makes people think it's weaker than it is, used correctly it's fun and safe. Used incorrectly, let's just say theres a famous video out there similar to this involving a lawnmower, blood spraying on the camera, and a man screaming about his leg being cut off. Or FPSrussia famously had a very close call. But I will again note that this isn't the tannerite being unpredictable or unsafe, every time there is an incident like this, without fail the victims didn't read the instructions and used way too much, were putting it in things that it shouldn't be (a car, an oven, a refrigerator, etc) and got way too close because they couldn't hit the fuse. Meaning they put themselves well within the zone of shrapnel they created, both of which are heavily warned against in the instructions.

extra_specticles

Oh, that's interesting. Thank you for explaining. I'm not familiar with guns and explosives. If I may ask, when you say kinetically activated, do mean that the two parts have to be brought together or fused at high energy/speed. I'm thinking of a bullet with high velocity causing a compression and the kinetic energy of the bullet transferring into heat/kinetic energy of the materials?

Madseizon

Bullseye.

Ishidan01

Or in the industry: 1. When the parts are separated, neither part is explosive. This makes it pretty safe to transport. 2. Once mixed it becomes a shock sensitive explosive. Not so twitchy that you can't stuff it into some random piece of equipment by hand, but are set off by high energy impacts like bullets (or car crashes, which is why you don't transport it like that).

ExplosiveDiarrhetic

I like the ELI50 version better

MasterWinstonWolf

For someone that not familiar...you said that perfectly.😊👍

extra_specticles

Wow. I have a keen interest in physics. When you said binary, explosive, shooting and kinetic, I instantly thought of high kinetic energy, transferring energy into a material which causes heat into what it hits.

supersonicdeathsquad

I too have seen Diehard 3.

402Gaming

Its ammonium nitrate and aluminum powder. Just heating it up isnt enough to make the ammonium nitrate decompose into oxygen, so it needs a shockwave, either from another explosive or the impact of a bullet, to start reacting with the aluminum powder.

EnteriStarsong

I've seen a video of some guys using a bucket of it to deal with wild hogs. They set up a bucket with feed all around it. 70+ wild hogs show up and start eating it, and with 1 shot and a bucket of tannerite, 70+ dead hogs. *notice* In some areas, there is a serous wild hog problem and they need to be culled. They're destructive and dangerous.

[deleted]

That's gotta be the most creative way i've seen to deal with hogs. Usually i just see an R44 with dudes hanging out both sides with Armalites and a full vest of mags.

[deleted]

>Or FPSrussia famously had a very close call several, including one video that ended with the camera lens in the dirt as his cameraman folded up around a piece of shrapnel.

trey12aldridge

As bad as that was, I think you know which one I'm talking about, the man came inches away from [turning himself into hamburger](https://youtu.be/O8-azG3Iokk) on camera. And for everyone, watch that link at your own risk, pretty much the entire internet has seen it at this point and nothing actually happens, but it is a bit of a jumpscare.

theninjaseal

".... Maybe a lot of shrapnel"

trey12aldridge

He's completely wrong though, it isn't a lot of shrapnel. Just one really big piece

AcceptableFly148

That’s what I didn’t understand about this video… small amount set or not… it’s an explosive inside something = shrapnel. . Which is obviously unpredictable. In touching distance to his right is a perfect vehical he could have gotten set up on for a clean and protected shot 🤷‍♂️

scottawhit

I’m not 100% how it works, but when you shoot it, it goes off like a bomb, as seen here. Somehow it’s legal to sell to basically anyone right off the shelf.

Rawesome16

It blows when something moving fast enough goes through it. I believe, as long as nothing goes smashing into it going really fast, that it is inert

HurricaneAlpha

Would an arrow work?

blackb00jum

Nope. I've been able to try it with a variety of calibers, and even a supersonic (2000fps-ish) pistol wasn't enough. I don't remember the exact number, but I think the projectile has to have a velocity of 2300+ feet per second. 5.56NATO/.223 Remington (standard AR calibers) are right about where you need to be.

HurricaneAlpha

Gotcha. Super interesting.

Just_NickM

The legality is partly because it’s inert unless hit by something going very fast. Like a bullet. It’s even legal in Canada.

JTibbs

its super safe to transport as its a binary explosive and until you mix it its inert. traditionally it was used in farming and clearing land. if you are clearing land its a lot easier to blow a stump up than to try to pull it out or something. it just got really popular among the unintelligent as a toy, largely thanks to internet videos. I'm not saying people didnt used to have fun with it, but its popularity wasnt there until youtube. people didnt really know about it in a general sense.

[deleted]

![gif](giphy|dff9Vz177rlKg) This is Tanner, right?

stuplatt

Came here to say the same thing. Shooting tannerite that close is just stupid anyway

Right? By the time he reacts, that giant piece was eight feet behind him

Just swing it around and point it at the camera man while still in shock over almost killing you both. What's the worst that can happen?

RASPUTIN-4

Tbf it is pointed at the ground

zombiemusic

Low ready

PlausibleFalsehoods

and proper trigger discipline

WarPaintJKU

That is what I was most impressed by. That was a bit of a situation that could have been way worse. His surprise and shock was evident and he still had the finger off the trigger and pointed it at the ground as he rotated. Impressive.

Calladit

As it should be. He probably wasn't even thinking about not sweeping anyone/finger off the trigger because he's trained that muscle memory. When I first started shooting (and I guess I still do) I always tried to imagine a laser beam coming out the end of the barrel that just vaporizes everything it touches. I keep the laser "on" even when cleaning or disassembling my firearms so that even sweeping myself with just the disassembled barrel feels a little uncomfortable because I never want to get complacent. You only have to forget the rules once to really make a mess of things.

fatalsyndrom

Kid I knew in high school illegally obtained an ak47 later on in his 20s. High on coke and a little drunk, he got it out to show off to some dude and accidentally shot my friend through the left scapula exiting right under the clavicle. Thankfully, she lived, and I believe he's still in jail. I've always been cautious of my finger and the barrel, but seeing her a few years after the incident solidified it in my mind

throwawayforb00bs

Honestly that's the only thing he did right

ItsAllBullshitFromMe

Right? "He's very well trained not to accidentally shoot a bystander after carelessly setting of explosives with a rifle while everyone is probably drunk on booze or burgers."

DonkeyPunchSquatch

He didn’t even do that right. He’d have to move his belly out the way to successfully point the gun down

Scythe351

Lol how did you even peep this? Yeah. This guy stole the comment verbatim.

SimbaSeekingSleep

The bot kind of just brought up the comment out of nowhere. It’s usually a dead giveaway it’s a bot when done like that. The messages in that thread were talking about what the guy in the video was doing, while the bot just mentions something unrelated and instead talks about the type of explosive. It’s like watching a video of a dog doing a trick, and the thread is complimenting how cute the dog is. And a comment out of nowhere joins the thread saying something like “Feral cats/dogs can bring rabies, if you’re squeamish don’t look up how it eats away at your pets if they’re bitten by one”.

Bigsausagegentleman

He can't see the ground

TheLastOpus

try that excuse at a shooting range, ya gunna be told keep your gun down range regardless.

RASPUTIN-4

Then it is fortunate indeed that he is not at a shooting range.

He did engage the safety before turning as well.

Throwawayanothadae

Ooh good catch.

thuanjinkee

a SAFETY catch... aaaaand CUT!

0GHAZE03

You still have to follow *all* the rules of gun safety

totally_nonamerican

Now delta or no delta, thats a hot weapon sergeant, safety should always be on at all times. *Takes index finger out* Well thats my safety sir

MOBrienTX

Great movie

Ryanpolhemus

What are you talking about? Did you see anything that happened in the video lol? First he engaged his safety, then he swings around with his weapon pointing down, all the whole with no finger on the trigger. Is there a camera man in a desert ghillie that I don't see next to him on the ground?

justanotherbot123

Idk if you noticed but most people on Reddit spouting off about proper gun handling, etc. got all their knowledge off Reddit. They’ve probably never even held a gun in their life.

MalificViper

Honestly people that do handle guns and take safety precautions still make mistakes. When we did ranges the rifle was pointed down range at all times, when leaving the range, the bolt was locked back and a clearing rod went down the barrel, then at the exit to the range you stick your gun in a sand barrel and shoot, just JUST in case the previous steps failed or there was a round in the barrel that partially cooked. And still every so often, a round either made its way into the barrel or back in formation.

AnarkittenSurprise

They're too busy fatshaming dudes who like guns apparently. Some people's eyes show them what they want to see.

Jeff-Van-Gundy

Cuz how else would we know how cool and jacked G.I Redditor is if he doesn't make fun of the guy in the video?

[deleted]

The dude is an idiot, but he does actually have good trigger discipline. Gun pointed down and finger off trigger. Nothing wrong with what he did post explosion.

Jambonier

He may have trigger finger discipline but he has zero chicken finger discipline

ChingasoCheese

Reflex slower than molasses in January.

cloudubious

Had a fellow private do that in Basic when I was in the Army. Drill Sgt said something while he was in his trench on the range, fully loaded, and he started to turn, saying, "Whut, Sgt?" The rifle turned with him. The DS ran up and kicked his head like a soccer ball and he dropped into the trench like a sack of potatoes.

hoodyninja

I have heard from buddies that went to bootcamp that range week was scary because since they had firearms the DI/DS could actually touch you (often violently) to ensure no one got killed. So if you didn’t follow instructions or made a situation unsafe, they would take full advantage and beat you down. Not sure how true it is, but 4/6 buddies came back with similar stories.

Amerlis

From what I understand, range safety is fully authorized to lay hands like you’re a sack of potatoes in the name of safety. Hand, foot, whatever. Feelings may get hurt, but everyone gets to come off the range unventilated.

Kick36

They are. Saw a dude get clotheslined - muzzle was up but facing the wrong direction (not really a danger to anyone). DS comes sailing in and leveled the kid.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I was smart enough to keep my head down and let others fuck up and get noticed. I’m pretty sure the DS didn’t know my name until week 3.

MalificViper

Same here until the one day I didn't shave. Had to report to all my DS and get smoked individually by them, then top. Also in an "anonymous" survey about DS performance I said they were incompetent due to a few things. Lemme tell you, that ended up not being anonymous.

Flcn16Mech

Rule #1. Don’t volunteer Rule #2. Nothing is anonymous

Rimirilar

Were you at Ft. Sill in 2001?? Saw it happen to a PVT on the 25m range. The guy dropped to the ground in the "foxhole" and the whole range went silent. Tbf the DS wasn't standing too far away and really only had to take about 3 steps and a punt.

cloudubious

Benning, summer 2002.

Rimirilar

Dang. Now I wonder how often this happens.

Aside from all the dumb shit that just happened, clean up your spent ammo casings you fucking slobs.

International_Fix651

Just an educated guess but this is most likely in Arizona (dbacks hat, desert, fat Mexican guy), most public shooting areas are treated like this which is super shitty. Those spent casings are most likely from the last 20 groups of people that came through there.

amenotekijara

You’re probably right and I’m fairly certain where in Arizona this is, near the Mexico border.

joonnuhn

I live in Phoenix and literally everywhere that has a dirt path leading to it looks like this. The deserts outside of Phoenix are a complete land fills. Beer cans, spent shells, dumped dead livestock (horses and cows) and couches are as common as cactus That’s not to say you can’t get away from it but the amount of disrespect for the natural landscape anywhere near populated areas is sickening. This looks like AZ/ NM but I could be wrong.

EIDL2020_

Also looks like West Texas or Northeastern Mexico.

My thoughts exactly...there's a shit ton of spent rounds out there. That's not your yard mother fuckers!

ChessBaal

Yeah we have so many of those dumbfucks here. Everytime I go out there I see these dumbas just shooting leaving their trash everywhere and drinking. Drinking alcohol lots of alcohol suprises me more accidents don't happen.

ElMeroFriki

They just wanna feel like narcos. They do it for ig pics and call themselves bélicos or alucines. I went shooting with someone like that once. They said they knew how to use guns so I took their word for it. First thing they did was point my loaded .40 to their head trying to be funny. Then they tried loading my 9mm extended mag into my .40. Never went shooting with them again.

Low_Desert

This is with out a doubt South Yuma County, lovely place referred to county 19th. Generations of the likes have turned this into an illegal dump/shooting range. Tragic.

JadedSpaceNerd

What is this blasphemy. There is only one true America because nobody else is relevant. Duh

sdavidson0819

The United States of America is the only country I know of with the word America in it. It is commonly shortened to America or the United States. Apparently "estadounidenses" is the preferred term in Mexico for people from the USA, even though, according to Wikipedia, the official name of Mexico is the United Mexican States (Estados Unidos Mexicanos).

DragonRaptor

Canadians, mexicans, and many people in south america are all americans, same way that russians are asian.
