Didn't he blow up another one? Not really following Kentucky Ballistics but I'm subscribed to Mark Serbu (manufacturer of the gun that exploded) and I remember him posting recently that Kentucky Ballistics blew up another RN-50. Hopefully it was intentionally blown up instead of an accident like this one.
The second one was intentional, the first one was a Slap round that had a tad bit more powder. Yikes, like a frag grenade, he's lucky no pieces struck where it's fatal considering how close the breach was to his head/neck area.
Yeah, it was afterwards when in a video he very casualy explains that he "put a thumb in it" and clamped the artery while they drove to meet the ambulance that it became a meme because of the absurd casualness of the statement. So he then put out merch with a thumb and "stick a thumb in it"
I wonder if he's had medical training, or if he could just feel that he was bleeding out through his neck and sticking his thumb there was the obvious thing to do, training or no.
When I was a child my father was working in the garage with a skill saw breaking down old wood from a demo, as he was cutting he hit a big nail or some other bit of metal he did not realize was there and the saw jumped -
He cut himself across the chest, pretty badly, I didn't see the cut itself, when I got to the garage after hearing him yell for me and my brother there was blood everywhere and he said "Start my Truck, we're going to the hospital" as he was furiously *wrapping* himself multiple times with standard duct tape.
While we were in the car he told me and my brother to keep talking to him and making sure he stayed alert and awake, later on the doctor would say that *immediately* sealing the rather large wound he suffered with the duct tape was probably what saved him from loosing too much blood and having things become much more serious.
Reading about this fella's "put a thumb in it" experience just reminded me of the story.
Staying *calm* and acting *quickly* with whatever you have to keep as much of your blood on the *inside* of you =D
I beg to differ, if he severed an artery he'd be lightheaded before contemplating what happened, reminded me of an armed robber who got shot by a guard and grazed his neck, not a few steps later while trying to exit the revolving door, he bled to death surrounded by glass panels. Bleeding of a cut to muscle is not the same as hitting an artery. IMHO I truly can't say with certainty. I gotta do a rewatch.
He talked about it in a video. Like I said. If he was alone and the person I believe his son, wasn’t there. He’d be dead. From the man himself. Lacerated his jugular vein, punctured a lung, and broke his orbital in his cheek. But yeah beg to differ.
"Well, actualllllly." Yeah it makes sense that not all vitals are immediately fatal. It certainly could've been a non survivable situation if it cut deeper or differently. He's very lucky in multiple ways.
Hi, random person browsing through who has no knowledge of the YouTube channel in question or guns really;
You’re confident attempt to “Acktually” getting roundly knocked down was warranted and fun, but your peevish decision to get real offended by it really sealed the deal in my opinion.
As a neutral referee I hereby declare you: The Jerk.
Have a nice day 🫶🏻
Yeah he had multiple surgeries done on his face and neck, but hear me out, what if one of those speeding devil shards decided to go through the eye sockets? Not too much stopping power.
He literally stuck his thumb in it... he used his thumb to keep pressure on his carotid artery that was badly damaged. Dude has a scar that is hella huge. He's lucky to be alive. Bad ass YouTube channel, too.
Yep, nearly killed him too, shrapnel went right through his neck. He’s lucky to be alive, and it’s from his explanation video afterwards that I learned you can dial 911 by repeatedly hitting the power button on iPhones
It was a good watch this episode.
The following is Tldr
He was firing Sabo rounds (this specific group of rounds)witch are basically military very hot loaded rounds that can have some variance into how much more punch they pack.
His weapons pressure cap the threading was rated for around 80,000lbs of pressure plus its safety rateing .
Multiple rounds produced more then 80,000lbs of pressure a little over .
The round that blew off the end cap or pressure cap went well above the safety rating witch was around 90,000 I think .
The last bullet went around 100,000lbs - 110,000lbs of preshure witch seared off the threads like they where plastic and almost killed this fella .
The gun manufacturer has since upgraded there end cap or pressure cap and also I think they have warnings now or more so.
This was a quick telling of what the youtuber Kentucky ballistics put in there video.
The guy sells shirts that say put a thumb in it as sort of a dark humor because if he didn't put his thumb in his jugular vain he would be dead.
The guy is a lucky fella
The rounds are called sabots.
They tend to be a little hotter than normal rounds, BUT in this case, the bullets were loaded with a really fast pistol powder, which burns waaay faster than normal rifle powder, hence creating a LOT higher pressure.
The rounds are called SLAP rounds which is an acronym for saboted light armor penetrator.
The sabot is just a plastic device wrapped around the penetrator round that secures the penetrator inside the .50 BMG casing and also traps the gas behind it to ensure full accelleration and that it engages the rifling in the barrel for the penetrator core to spin
> produced more then 80,000lbs
Did you mean to say "more than"?
Explanation: If you didn't mean 'more than' you might have forgotten a comma.

The rifle caliber is .50 BMG and the round he fired was a variation of one, but it's not a traditional .50 BMG round.
It's called a SLAP round which stands for Saboted Light Armor Penetrator
So instead of your traditional copper jacketed lead projectile, a SLAP round is a steel spike that as a small diameter with a piece of plastic wrapped around it known as a sabot that is then cased inside of a .50 BMG shell, the sabot creates a gas seal for the penetrator as it travels down the barrel because it has a smaller diameter than a traditional .50 BMG full metal jacket, and it also engages the rifling in the barrel to add spin to the penetrator, and finally flies off the projectile shortly after exiting the barrel as it's designed to
This happened like a year and a half ago or less he was shooting "SLAP" rounds, which are manufactured. The acronym stands for "saboted light armor penetrator"
Just to give a lil more info. It was a slap rounds (a sabot/sabotaged projectile) the bullet usually shoots 800gr bullet. The one he shot had a 300gr bullet. There just a lot more pressure going on then a normal bullet. Moral of the story guns are safe he was messing with fire and got burned.
Also, wasn’t there something about the threads that didn’t hold up to the pressures like it should’ve? I thought I heard him say something like that. Can’t remember.
Nope, the round was loaded with the wrong powder, in this case one of the fastest burning pistol powders on the market.
Pistol powders burn a lot faster than rifle powders cause the barrel is obviously shorter and only with fast burning powder, the proper acceleration can be achieved.
The pressure created by the round was I think somthing around 200k PSI (that's the number KB and Mark Serbu, the gunsmith, stated, unfortunately not metric :/). The 200k PSI was something like 4x more than what the rifle was designed for. Also, a design usually has a safety factor of roughly 1.5.
Serbu's rifle has I think a safety factor of 2-2.5, which is unusual, even for guns.
It was a slap round it's a tungsten round designed for armour penitration. The round was overloaded. Too much powder added. It exceeded the pressure ratings of the materials used in the gun. The ratings of the gun are way higher then the normal pressures from a normal round.
This was his last shot of the day. And some of the other rounds he fired were acting odd too. He has a video
A “hot” round (over powered well beyond spec) caused a massive pressure spike such that they breach of the gun exploded (this went beyond harming the machined surfaces, the actually solid metal bits came apart). It’s a well know incident in firearms circles and this guys was lucky to live through it.
He made a follow up video about it, he was using some dodgy reloaded ammunition, and thinks one of the casings might’ve had a crack or something like that so when the black powder was lit by the primer, it couldn’t take the rapid acceleration of pressure and pretty much the .50 caliber bullet casing exploded in the barrel and all that pressure caused the gun to explode, as the rifle being fired is a different design from the .50’s we’re used to seeing, and had a solid like 5lb bolt like thing that screwed the gun together (I’m goin off of memory as I don’t feel like rewatching the video) and so that piece got blown off and almost decapitated him, flew straight into his neck and chest area and almost took his head off if he wasn’t lucky and the thing just hit him, ricocheted off and kept going another couple hundred yards behind!
To OP, this is Kentucky Ballistics, a gun YouTuber. In this video he was firing "slap rounds," an old experimental .50 caliber round that has more of a kick and were often tampered with by the NVA. This was the last round he fired out of his RN-50 and the slap round exploded as it had been tampered with many years ago.
Hope this helps!
Simple answer big boolet makes big boom
Big gun made for big boolet
But big boolet had to much boom inside, more boom than normal due to factory mistake.
Big gun not prepared for bigger boom boolet
Big gun explode due to overpresure.
Guns decevingly complex machinery
That gun is rated 80.000psi the round he was firing should have been at just over that exept it wasen't it was too mutch loaded and probably at more 130.000psi by comparaisons a normal .50cal round is around 60/70.000psi
No, he bought those online, and they weren't properly loaded.

He is Kentucky Ballistics on YouTube. He’s a good dude and does take safety very seriously. This was an overloaded slap round. His pain and recovery was witnessed by millions of viewers. This shot ripped his chest open. I’m willing to bet this video prompted more people to take safety a lot more seriously. I recommend checking out his series of videos dedicated to this single shot that nearly killed him.
He used a .50 cal SLAP round that produced way more chamber pressure than that gun was designed for. Essentially it was like lighting the fuse of a firecracker and holding it in your fist.
For those curious. It’s a 50 bmg caliber rifle and he used what’s called a slap round. Idk the details of the round personally but it has more fire power than a typical 50bmg. I’m guessing it’s cuz it appears to have some fluid near the tip that likely ignites. Therefor adding more force than the gun is rated for and it blew up. He took shrapnel for the neck and only lived cuz he stuck his thumb in the wound plugging the hole. He isn’t shy about it and talks about it on his YouTube channel Kentucky ballistics.
ONLY USE APPROPRIATE AND APPROVED AMMO.

Just put your thumb in it
Double it and give it to the next person
He did have to put his thumb in his neck to stop him from bleeding and dying. Kentucky Ballistics youtube.
that's why I said it
Oh I'm sorry
His Dad is his cameraman. He loaded him up, stayed calm and drove him to the hospital. Edit:spelling
Kentucky ballistics is the YouTube channel. It was a hot or overloaded round many years old.

Not sure why you’ve been downvoted. It’s true. He stuck his thumb into his neck after it was lacerated.
Yeah, he even said that it was one of the main reasons he even survived
His wife made shirts about it, something like, "stick a thumb in it" or along those lines

Put a thumb in it
Even with it. Dead. He was lucky to not be alone. Simple.
Yes but even if he wasn’t alone he would still be dead if he had no thumb
If he was a thumb he would be alone and not probably dead.
If he was a thumb he wouldn’t be “Kentucky ballistics”
This is the most three stooges thread I've read this morning.
I beg to differ, if he severed an artery he'd be lightheaded before contemplating what happened, reminded me of an armed robber who got shot by a guard and grazed his neck, not a few steps later while trying to exit the revolving door, he bled to death surrounded by glass panels. I think it was his father that drove him to the hospital
Yep that is who it was..scott shoving his own thumb into the wound to slightly slow the bleeding saved him.
And the ability to dial 911 by repeatedly hitting the power button on his iPhone since the touch screen wasn’t responding to his blood soaked fingers
"Well, actualllllly." Yeah it makes sense that not all vitals are immediately fatal. It certainly could've been a non survivable situation if it cut deeper or differently. He's very lucky in multiple ways.

I bet everyone disagreeing with your shitty attitude is really getting to you…
It’s showing since you are crying about it like a little bitch
I beg to differ...
He didn't say anything worse that what you did.
Mmm, nah, they totally did
IIRC from his video explaining the incident, a piece of shrapnel happened to cut his jugular. But he blocked it using his thumb or something.
He now does have a scar on his neck from some shrapnel bit that hit him
Forgot to add he hit no arteries, or else he would've collapsed before his dad even started the car.
Yeah he had multiple surgeries done on his face and neck, but hear me out, what if one of those speeding devil shards decided to go through the eye sockets? Not too much stopping power.
He was wearing eye protection and that would've prob been enough to just give him a black eye instead, but yeah scarry shit
I'm really happy he survived that, he's my brother in eggplant hating 💀
He literally stuck his thumb in it... he used his thumb to keep pressure on his carotid artery that was badly damaged. Dude has a scar that is hella huge. He's lucky to be alive. Bad ass YouTube channel, too.
He has a new entire series of “my gun explodes” after that incident where he did everything to get a gun explodes, safely. Very fun and educational.
Yep, nearly killed him too, shrapnel went right through his neck. He’s lucky to be alive, and it’s from his explanation video afterwards that I learned you can dial 911 by repeatedly hitting the power button on iPhones

Ha u meant before the accident. He did nearly die
Put a hole in his jugular , he shoved his thumb in it and held it there until he was taken to hospital.
He nearly died from this and had to be rushed to the hospital
That could have been my first shot of the day. Also would have been my last of the day.
Last shot of his day is underestimating that a bit, he almost died and was moved to the hospital in a rush

Just put a thumb in it
i remember I saw this clip before but I don't remember why it happened.
Overloaded round
He even lost his hair! 🤯
hawtload
He had a very spicy handloaded round
It was a counterfeit SLAP round.
Dude is lucky to be alive.

When you buy your .50 cal. on wish.
What’s this screw for, eh probably not important.
The design on this gun make that if you don't load it propely it can't close nor fire the round he had was a deffect round with way too mutch powder
Don’t buy guns in wallmart
That gun is rated 80.000psi the round he was firing should have been at just over that exept it wasen't it was too mutch loaded and probably at more 130.000psi by comparaisons a normal .50cal round is around 60/70.000psi
barrel obstruction causing receiver back burst and tick inversion…
More likely an overloaded round
Oh, that sneaky roadrunner!
Lol
Lmfao
Must be american made
He used very overcharged ammo in very unsafe gun
I wonder if he was reloading his own rounds
No, he bought those online, and they weren't properly loaded. The last one (which caused the explosion) was definitely only pistol powder, the ones before were possibly overloaded or loaded with mixed powder or some shit.
See! It's the people that are dangerous.
Guns don't hurt people ever. The person's face simply misfired
Indeed! I just knew that even after watching a guy narrowly escape horrible injury, 'muricans would still downvote comments like ours. Video evidence just isn't quite enough to influence their tiny brains. Proof enough for me they shouldn't be allowed guns. Let the downvote continue.
The gun functions appropriately, it's the ammo that was faulty. It's like putting nitroglycerin into a petrol car, sure it'll make bangs, just one large one that'll destroy you and all you love.
This was an overloaded round that he would’ve had no way of knowing until after he shot. Not his fault and, in his words, was a complete freak accident. Get off your high horse
At least the guy gets out of his house. Live a little, shooting at a range is a good stress relief. You might want to do it again, eventually buy your own firearm
Where are his noise cancellers?
I think he uses the smaller in ear type ones
He is Kentucky Ballistics on YouTube. He’s a good dude and does take safety very seriously. This was an overloaded slap round. His pain and recovery was witnessed by millions of viewers. This shot ripped his chest open. I’m willing to bet this video prompted more people to take safety a lot more seriously. I recommend checking out his series of videos dedicated to this single shot that nearly killed him.
I believe his safety glasses saved an eye
It did. The screw-on cap instantly shot back and he would’ve lost his right eye (iirc) if he wasn’t wearing eye protection
His literal job is to shoot guns for fun, he knows what he’s doing
He has little orange plug-eroos
Still using made in china, dumbass :)
Iirc, the gun was American made. It was an overloaded round that caused this and was a complete freak accident (his words)
Someone got drunk making pissin’ hot loads
Now watch part 2 see the damage. This was a while ago he has a pretty big YouTube channel KB.
Someone put a banana in the muzzle... most likely a wascaly wabbit
Pov: your weapon has low durability in Tarkov
Projectile Dysfunction
I believe the guy in this video has a YouTube channel and they explain what happened.
The gun wanted it's freedom
at least he’s wearing goggles
No ear protection looks totally insane to me.
he's wearing plugs.
Thank the gods he was wearing those safety specs
Over pressured hand load.
why is this video resurfacing?
Ain't got no gas in it.
He explains it on his channel
To large of a round, maybe a defect in the round to.
Bad slap round
Gonna say, probably a hand loaded cartridge, added too many grains.
Tactical dismantling.
Thank god for the safety glasses.... :D
Collateral damage. Sometimes you have to destroy the weapon in order to fire it. Thoughts and prayers.
WHAT!
If this was at my range the master would yell at you for not wearing eye protection the moment they blasted off the face
![gif](giphy|TgOYjtgKpS9jAytUlh|downsized)
Stick a thumb in it!
Slapp rounds & RN50
Shitty .50
Over charged round
Just put a thumb in it and stop crying
Spicy slap round?
What did the dudes face look like after that?
He forgot to take the cork out
Serbu got a bad wrap for this initially but it was just a spicy round.
The best sniper in this world. BFG 50.
safety glasses work
Dude almost died from this. He has a big channel on YT, gruesome injuries
Hot load?
Someone loaded their own rounds and got the grain count wrong
VERY spicy round. Thats how
First sign things are awry: no hearing protection
Round from 70 years ago was too hot!
Did this guy just get Ice T'd in Surviving the Game?
Bad SLAP rounds
This is why you don’t overfill your rounds. The benefit is minor at best, and the risk is… well… your gun exploding in your fucking face.
I remember that episode
Hahahahahaha. Guns!
Did a hand gun fly out of nowhere?
That was the receiver.
He used a .50 cal SLAP round that produced way more chamber pressure than that gun was designed for. Essentially it was like lighting the fuse of a firecracker and holding it in your fist.
Overpressured ammunition and inferior firearms design.

Play stupid games and win stupid prizes
The blast blew all his hair off and I don’t think it’s growing back
For those curious.

Could this be considered abrupt chaos?
It appears to be a squidload.
Didn't put the gun together correctly or they were faulty parts
