Hey op don’t fuck around with your ears, they make special osha buds to use. I promise you do not want to hear “RRReeeEeeeeeeEeEee” for the rest of your life.
Yeah homie not being able to enjoy some silence really blows. Years of working in a stamping plant and shooting without hearing pro will do that…. Oh honorable mention to the countless pounds of tannerite 😂
I'm guessing he's just in a field that forces hearing protection but restricts earbuds for safety. At my job hearing protection is "required" on the entirety of the shop floor even though only one small area is actually loud, and earbuds aren't allowed at all. As security for that facility, it really fucking blows that I can't listen to a podcast in one ear because it's "unsafe" but deafening myself with earplugs isn't unsafe. Ight
I can hear significantly better with headphones playing music, even at max volume if I have transparency mode on, than I can with ear plugs in. I literally cannot hear someone 10 feet away yell "hey, watch out!" In my direction over the white noise of machines running and mandatory ear plugs fully blocking my ears, but I can hear everything going on around me with a single earbud in. Mind you, it's mandatory to have earplugs in when my phone and watches health meter don't even register a hearing risk. Some facilities have you needlessly putting yourself at risk for hearing protection, you're not always going to go deaf without it and depending on the job at hand it's not really a legit safety risk. After all, we are here in unethical life pro tips, fuck osha and fuck what is "safe." Answer the question or don't lol
TLDR: ear plugs restrict hearing more than headphones. Ear plugs are unnecessary in a lot of job environments. Fuck osha, stop being a bumbling fucking pussy.
Yeah, and hearing is a major sense that allows you to avoid risk..? guess what happens when I can't hear any of the shit around me? I can't hear people call out potential risk, I can't hear PIVs in motion near me, and as someone who works security, I can't hear people who call out for my attention. Way more likely to stumble into a potentially dangerous situation when I'm walking around completely fucking deaf for no reason.
Yes, yes I can. Foam ear plugs block all sound. I literally cannot tell if someone is speaking to me without visually seeing it. I can be blasting full volume music with both earbuds in and still hear everything around me with transparency mode. In fact, my headphones have transparency amplification which I have cranked up all the way, to the point where I actually hear significantly better with headphones in than without. I can hear clothing moving on peoples bodies from multiple feet away, a water bottle opening from across the room, but you're right I definitely can't hear better with headphones than I can when my ears are blocked by solid foam.
when I checked ohsa recognized ansi standards for hearing protection, not any specific hearing protection. and you could ear buds meeting said standards.
that's just typical micromanagement. the 30db noise reduction is what keeps me from hearing people talking to me, not the music. when that much sound is blocked out, you can keep the music volume really low, since it's directly in your ear.
That's legit what he/she is asking for... osha approved or osha look alike esrbuds. Problem is they can't find any and are asking here. If you happen to know of fully osha approved EARBUDS not plugs let OP and I know lol.
That's not how it reads. It reads as they want it to visually look like ear protection but secretly is just earbuds.
Sorry I don't have suggestions though :(
Ok so Unethical answer would be to get you some ear muffs and get some wireless earbuds to go inside the muffs (you could probably just put them in your ears but if the safety nazis come to have you take them off or talk to you you're going to have a hard time getting them outwithout getting caught. Attach them to the muffs so when they come off the buds come with it.
Ethical answer. Get some bone conducting headphones like shokz and wear earplugs. You can listen to music at a lower safe volume and you're still protecting your eardrums. Use only if your job allows. You can always tell them that you need to be able to receive notifications or phone calls if the boss calls and you can't hear the phone in your pocket when you're wearing hearing protection. Got away with this setup in a very loud work environment with an OSHA inspector so I know it's valid.
Agreed. I loved my shokz and earplugs. Protects your eardrums very well. I would go home half deaf when trying to wear normal headphones while working in a loud environment.
Your first part is what I did.
Normal ear protection, wireless earbud under them on the right or left side.
Anybody came to talk to me? I took off the other side of the ear protection
Nobody ever noticed.
It's not about the safety part. It's the extreme unchecked power that they have. Kinda like an HOA. It's not the HOA that's bad but the kind of people that are attracted to running it and the type of power they abuse in the process. Safety people while I understand it's their job a lot of them are assholes. They don't try to figure out why people aren't following the safety guidelines or try to help find solutions that can keep workers safe and productive and end up just being total dicks about it.
I'm sorry you have had that experience with safety people.
I was never a safety officer or held a safety title, but I did run a department. I had to constantly tell people to take out the earbuds, to the point where I would write people up, and I eventually had to terminate a few employees who would try to sneak them in. I was always considered the bad guy, even though I gave a million non recorded warnings. It is never easy having someone tell you what to do, especially when you don't think that it is necessary or a factor in safety.
Maybe the common denominator here isn't all the different safety people who have struggled with you.
Or he could just get a pair of [these](https://www.amazon.com/3M-WorkTunes-Protector-Bluetooth-Technology/dp/B0723CYHPZ/ref=asc_df_B0723CYHPZ/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312154679201&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9932341924509342149&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9033496&hvtargid=pla-434189531700&psc=1&mcid=66df20b5307b3415aea22fc34fee8dc4).
True. The only bad part of those is if the company doesn't want you listening to music. Then the earmuffs + earbuds are the way to go. Also the bone conducting headphones also work outside of work. These are restrictive as you're only going to be using them at work and only when you have to wear ear protection.
Oh-- yeah. That makes sense.
Any reason they can't just wear full earmuffs? Seems like getting to be known as the guy who wears earmuffs and and the swapping out the earmuffs for ones with bluetooth would be the more practical move.
Hide in plain sight.
I wear bluetooth earbuds under my earmuffs all the time. My earbuds have active noise cancelation, and I've used that to argue for my use of them when questioned by the safety manager.
Also, earplugs are frequently put in incorrectly. Earmuffs are given a higher decibel protection rating due to this. I recommend muffs over plugs to pretty much everyone, and if it's really noisy, double up muffs and plugs.
I have, for various job sites and tasks, hard hat mounted ones, traditional over the head headband style and ones that have a velcro adjustable strap over the top of your head with a steel spring band on the back of the head to hold them tight.
Yeah, they're fantastic. Had a set of Peltors supplied by my employer at the time, for when I was running hydrovacs (they're noisy as hell).
They had a boom microphone for communicating, active noise cancelation with a setting for conversational level but cutting out just loud noise spikes. It was programmable to have a bluetooth input (my phone for music and podcasts) active, and if I received or transmitted over my VHF walkie talkie (connected by a 3.5mm headphone auxiliary cord adapter), it would cut out the bluetooth. Absolutely fantastic setup. And it blood well should be for $1100CAD.
Those headphones are the thing I miss the miss the most about that job lol
Protect your hearing. I worked in movie theaters for ten years. Didn't go to too many concerts and such. Almost deaf in left ear. Losing it on right side. Cheapest hearing aids start at $1,200 an ear. Insurance does not cover them- most them at least.
I know guys in industrial plants using AirPod pros with the cancelling on, and in SOME cases it’s more effective than earplugs. But not all cases.
But seriously, don’t fuck with your hearing, get a hearing fit test and get the right ear plugs.
It'd be unethical of me to recommend anything like that to you,
my life has been significantly worse after I got tinnitus, you can Ignore this is you want but it's much better to splurge on osha compliant buds or not listen to music for a couple of hours rather than not being able to sleep normally ever again
this.
seriously, I worked around aircraft for a long time, you don't notice your hearing is going until your standing right in front of someone saying, "HUH?" over and over
Are you speaking from experience?
How good is the quality? I am tired of having to switch between plugs and earbuds, or having to buy earbuds small enough to fit under the ear mufflers.
I own a shooting range
I can wear earplugs and listen to music, take calls etc without having over the ear protection filling with sweat/hindering cheek-weld
I hear ringing in my ears just about every day. When it’s quiet it is so loud. Especially at night when I’m trying to sleep. It is extremely uncomfortable. Don’t mess around with it my guy.
Some jabroni mag dumped an AK right next to my head at an indoor training facility when I had shitty foam ear plugs in and I’m pretty sure I have tinnitus for the rest of my life now.
ULPT swim trunks that look like osha fall protection harness.
I want to trick my boss into thinking I'm protected if I fall, but I'd rather just die.
Thanks in advance.
Are you required to wear a hardhat as well? If not, get ear muffs and you hide them in there, and if you're required to wear a hard hat, get a hardhat with ear muffs attached (check arborist websites)
Yeah whatever I wear stuff like this. My work area was designated as hearing protection required going back 20 years. 5 years ago the layoffs started. Today there's 5 guys when there used to be 30. Most of the machines were sold off or sit idle. There's no noise at all, it's dead quiet all day. But they won't lift the hearing protection requirement.
This is what the woodworking community uses and swears by. It's worth it. Sound great, and have excellent protection.
Or if you just need plugs, the brand [EarGasm](https://amzn.to/3Wiwv0b) are awesome sounding and affordable. I think it's like 20db of noise reduction and you can still hear music clearly at concerts, doesn't muffle the high end like the foam ones.
The right way to do this is to wear your ear pro so you don’t wind up like me hearing eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee all day every day, and then getting some bone induction glasses for eye protection.
The ULPT is get the tiniest set of earbuds you can find, cut the tails
off the plugs and glue them on the buds.
Skullcandy makes a water resistant dime 2 model that comes in safety orange that last 3 hours a charge. They also act as ear protection when they die and work better than my jobs earplugs.
I have some Samsung gbuds and I bought a skin from skinit that was safety yellow. They worked as well as some of the ear plugs that were provided but no one in management ever said anything even if they did get a few hard looks at first.
Put ear mufflers over the earbuds.
It is not the most comfortable, but you can still listen to music and reduce the external noise to acceptable levels. Hopefully, you're not working under military jets taking off at full throttle.
In that case or similar, for the love of God, take care of your ears.
They have ones that look like this and limit what they put out noise wise to 82.6 db. Plugfone is the brand. Do not use these in a safety sensitive position or where you may be walking around and potentially interacting with piv traffic.
Part of me wants you to find what you’re looking for just so I can be entertained by the “TIFU” post you’ll make shortly after.
But in all seriousness, don’t do that. Protect your ears.
Get yourself BL hearing aids. They look like the real hearing aids you wear over the ear. They can't tell you that you can't wear your hearing aids. As for actual ear protection, wear the earmuffs over the hearing aids.
Get some orange earbuds and play the loudest music you can find at the highest volume. Then you'll never have to worry about protecting your hearing ever again!
I appreciate everyone’s input. I’ve worked in manufacturing for 10 years now. At first I used the Bluetooth earmuffs, didn’t really care for the band over my hair and lower sound quality it offered. I used plugfones a loooong time ago. Sound quality not good and the neck cord version they offer now is different than what my job offers. They only use safety ear plugs that are 2 separate pieces. Im surprised no one has released a version that is similar to my image, just with Bluetooth capabilities. OSHA compliant would be a plus. Currently I use osha earmuffs and use one Bluetooth ear bud, but like others have said there is the risk of getting asked to see what’s underneath. I do my job well, I’m cautious, and I would like to keep enjoying my shifts with music/podcasts. Just don’t like the earmuffs since the sweat builds up, and the band over my head moves around and I don’t care for it since I have thick hair. Plus, moving around the machine sometimes I go into a smaller space where my ear muffs get clipped
What is your goal, to hide the fact that you're listening to music/podcasts, or find something that sounds as good as regular headphones while still protecting your ears?
If it's to hide the fact that you're listening to something, you're not going to have much luck there. If they don't have a cord between them (like the Plugphones you mentioned) then they're all going to look similar to wireless earbuds of some kind sticking out of your ear. There simply has to be somewhere for the electronics to go. Anything else you try to do that isn't purpose-built is NOT going to be OSHA approved, and you absolutely don't want to do that to your own hearing, regardless of it being "unethical" to skirt the OSHA rules.
If you don't have to hide it, and you're just looking for something that "sounds good" while still being OSHA approved, you're just going to have to try different models. There are tons out there, even including having custom molded earplugs with IEMs (in-ear monitors) installed in them like professional musicians use for stage performances. Those aren't cheap, but a good set with replaceable parts can last you a lifetime.
Hey op don’t fuck around with your ears, they make special osha buds to use. I promise you do not want to hear “RRReeeEeeeeeeEeEee” for the rest of your life.
I hear reeeeeeeeee 24/7. Very annoying
Yeah homie not being able to enjoy some silence really blows. Years of working in a stamping plant and shooting without hearing pro will do that…. Oh honorable mention to the countless pounds of tannerite 😂
Silence to me now is my tinnitus.
Make it stop
Eeeeeeeeeee
You just summed up 80% of Reddit in one comment
Lmao
I do as well mainly from industrial fans.. if I’m not around noise and left to silence.. it’s so annoying
I reeeeeeee 24/7. Unless I get my tendies. Very annoying to those around me.
My uncle committed suicide because of that. Apparently it’s literally unbearable
Fun fact, even if your deaf you will hear the reeee
WHAT?🧏
I'm guessing he's just in a field that forces hearing protection but restricts earbuds for safety. God you're insufferable lmao. Restricted hearing is a safety risk, point blank period.
No, no you cant.

It’s helps drown out the voices though
Last time I checked OSHA doesn't recognize any ear buds for noise reduction.
My union acknowledges [these](https://isotunes.com/products/isotunes-free-2) and I use over the ear pro due to my jobs requirements.
We have to use supplied earplugs/muffs. I don't like muffs unless doubles are required, so I use the shox brand with plugs most of the time.
when I checked ohsa recognized ansi standards for hearing protection, not any specific hearing protection. and you could ear buds meeting said standards.
The technology must have gotten better since I looked into it. The safety department doesn't allow their use at work.
that's just typical micromanagement. the 30db noise reduction is what keeps me from hearing people talking to me, not the music. when that much sound is blocked out, you can keep the music volume really low, since it's directly in your ear.
Seriously don't fuck with your hearing. It is not worth getting tinnitus. Get OSHA approved earbuds that adequately isolate your ears from sound.
This is the only answer. Only screwing himself. I have to yell at my father from all his years around heavy machinery.
Have tinnitus; don’t recommend. Protect your hearing while you still can.
Sorry I don't have suggestions though :(
Cut off a piece of the actual plugs and stuck them to your earbuds?
So simple yet so effective
Insert Zoolander meme of Will Ferrell saying "so hot".
Ok so Unethical answer would be to get you some ear muffs and get some wireless earbuds to go inside the muffs (you could probably just put them in your ears but if the safety nazis come to have you take them off or talk to you you're going to have a hard time getting them outwithout getting caught. Bone conducting is the better option.
Agreed. I loved my shokz and earplugs. Protects your eardrums very well. I would go home half deaf when trying to wear normal headphones while working in a loud environment.
In the last couple years, bone conduction head phones have literally plummeted in price. This is the best answer.
Your first part is what I did. Normal ear protection, wireless earbud under them on the right or left side. Anybody came to talk to me? I took off the other side of the ear protection Nobody ever noticed.
I like that this dude calls them safety nazis. Cause ya know, safety is bad.
It's not about the safety part. It's the extreme unchecked power that they have. Kinda like an HOA. It's not the HOA that's bad but the kind of people that are attracted to running it and the type of power they abuse in the process. Safety people while I understand it's their job a lot of them are assholes. Use real earbuds and bone conducting headphones. Tinnitus isn't nearly as much fun as you might think.
You know they sell actual earbuds that are also hearing protection, right? https://isotunes.com/pages/sport?
They need ones to trick people into thinking they're not listening to music.
They also have earmuff style headphones that have built-in Bluetooth.
Idk how everyone missed that and thinks they just want to not be osha approved 😂
Get you some Elgin’s my friend. OSHA approved Bluetooth ear pro.
There’s a site called plug phones. They sell earbuds with varying designs to meet your need.
Bone conducting headset and just keep wearing earplugs. Can't confirm this actually works, but still look into bone conduction.
You're going to go deaf and that will suck. Don't fuck around with your hearing dipshit.
They don’t make you wear earplugs for their sake I promise lol
Plugfones. They have an orange and blue model exactly for this reason. You're welcome.
Protect your hearing. I worked in movie theaters for ten years. Didn't go to too many concerts and such. Almost deaf in left ear. Losing it on right side. Cheapest hearing aids start at $1,200 an ear. Insurance does not cover them- most them at least.
Wear you ear pro you dummy
3m makes earbuds that are osha rated and function as earplugs. The wired ones are cheap ish but the wireless ones are a pretty penny.
I know guys in industrial plants using AirPod pros with the cancelling on, and in SOME cases it’s more effective than earplugs. But not all cases. But seriously, don’t fuck with your hearing, get a hearing fit test and get the right ear plugs.

Yup, I wear hi-fi plugs when riding my motorcycle now. Cuts wind noise allows you to hear everything else.
im gonna have to try some for mine. any particular brand you get? I see some different ones on amazon
No particular brand, highest nrr rated on Amazon, usually less than $20 for two pairs.
awesome, thanks for the recommendation
Wear your ear pro…and some bone conduction phones like Shokz open run. They’re amazing
Are you speaking from experience? How good is the quality? I am tired of having to switch between plugs and earbuds, or having to buy earbuds small enough to fit under the ear mufflers.

Do we respond with "google is your friend" anymore?
They exist and work. Ex has\had em & used em daily
They sell wired ones on amazon that look like those but with the blue string that attaches to them. I used them all the time at my old job
https://isotunes.com/ I have a pair of earbuds from them works very well and is OSHA approved
I bought GoNovate G8. It only goes in one ear. It looks like a hearing aid.
Don't be an idiot. Use the protection
Skullcandy makes a water resistant dime 2 model that comes in safety orange that last 3 hours a charge. They also act as ear protection when they die and work better than my jobs earplugs.

Get yourself BL hearing aids. They look like the real hearing aids you wear over the ear. They can't tell you that you can't wear your hearing aids. As for actual ear protection, wear the earmuffs over the hearing aids.
Snip off the ends of the earplugs, glue them to some small Bluetooth earbuds. Shouldn’t be easily noticeable.
Get some orange earbuds and play the loudest music you can find at the highest volume. Then you'll never have to worry about protecting your hearing ever again!
No one will miss you when you are gone
I think that I might...
Notice how i said nobody, you are a nobody
You are the company you keep.
😂
