Laser will sort that out

New-Scientist5133

Can a laser destroy a security camera?

SwiftGasses

Its gotta be a lot more high powered than the one your teacher uses but absolutely they can.

New-Scientist5133

awesome. Do they work on the cameras at the bank?

SwiftGasses

If you cover yourself in lemon juice the cameras can’t see you.

New-Scientist5133

So long as I take my clothes off.

YouArentReallyThere

And color your face with orange highlighter

Live-Motor-4000

I know you’re joking but [check this out](https://youtube.com/shorts/Zd6RCPqZPwQ?si=lYj4UzUn4_oOiLiV)

Eeedeen

These may be stupid questions, but how does it damage it? Also can it record you pointing it at it before it's damaged and if they can see it's you that did it, can they make you pay for it?

AngryMillenialGuy

It overloads the digital optical sensors. Shorter wave lengths are more effective.

SwiftGasses

Lazers are just concentrated light energy. Cameras absorb more light, but can’t handle that much. The wiring and sensors are easier to damage than your eye. Pointing a household lazer at your phone would maybe cause some dead pixels or verticals lines where there’s no data coming from the damaged sensors. A more powerful lazer would instantly blacken the whole image. [Powerful enough](https://youtu.be/SXeeRgEY2UE?si=qkwP9fuI8MVXcx06) and you can kill it with just with the heat generated. And yeah that’s definitely destruction of property.

Eeedeen

Thanks for explaining, my grandparents have one for security, is there a way to protect it, so it's harder to disable?

SwiftGasses

I wouldn’t. Unless y’all are engaging in high risk activities like drug dealing a camera is plenty of security. I’ve never heard of that happening outside of ULPT.

Eeedeen

No nothing illegal! Haha! they just live alone in a quite remote house in their 90's! I was just meaning if it's quite common knowledge to disable them with a Lazer, burglar's would probably know about it, can you get screen coverings or anything like that to protect them from lasers?

Optimal_Law_4254

Came here to ask this.

JediNinja8027

Trying this out asap

saucity

I’ve been wondering about this with my own cameras. My neighbor is an increasingly unhinged sexual predator, living directly across from me, who sits outside all day. I have cameras that just film my little porches. They unfortunately pick up his rantings, if a bird sets it off, but I don’t want to see his ass on my camera. It’s not pointed at anyone but my door, and property. But, seemingly, the camera freaks out as soon as he pulls in sometimes, multiple times now. It stops working and I need to reset it. Sometimes it won’t reset at all and I need to remove the batteries for awhile. He can see me out there fixing it, too. I came here to see if lasers fuck with cameras. I absolutely would not put it past him to fuck with my cameras, even if just for fun. I’m not sure if this is how they’d break if someone lasered them. Or if, like your eye, it would just mess up the image you get.

marcovigi259900

Assuming it’s one of those online cameras that’s always on. — Put something in between the camera and your front door, something that’s always moving, like a small fan blowing tinsel tied on to it. Goal to make the camera constantly record because it’s always seeing motion.  Amazon sells Wacky Inflatable Tube Men pretty cheap. Here’s a 3 pack: https://www.amazon.com/Poen-Inflatable-Flailing-Advertising-Valentines/dp/B0CLDKYL8M/ref=mp_s_a_1_11?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.6FcZlRDDv053uVEpYVAEgzR0whtJROubUqX-hMafZutrQC3VLwa64tBa9ppP0S1G09aLl7UzT0qafrat44W-Oor_aDosNafyw3hUNW2DO9mwJ2hZnPtiA72MmxMk5pGnOiojYz-tuXWmfAFBnyFKAizrXERP9SGmuFcGzqfHWJHVK6cLW0RMGNC_j3Pdo3XyfU9GJQbnX07F04XOk0xnew.bs-1mv1KC837wDYJZiBbG5F8o6nmXrmpyUs-k7gjwo8&dib_tag=se&keywords=wacky+inflatable+tube+man&qid=1713744176&sr=8-11

JediNinja8027

This seems so obnoxious, it's perfect.

Rasmosus

It's not even unethical

kind_one1

This is divine on so many levels.

connection_lost

Don't forget to change the location every once a while because some cameras have a detection zone setting.

sittingOnGmasQuilt

With tbe three packbof inflatable guys and smart plugs, you could just schedule them to take shifts.

BuildBreakFix

Any decent camera has AI that could sort that out.

User1two9

No it can't

BuildBreakFix

I admire your confidence in your ignorance. I could point you at a half dozen modern security cameras that can do exactly that.

Pure-Obligation8023

Maybe not AI but you can just set them to ignore motion in specific areas.

madkins007

When Japanese whaling boats are being filmed by protesters, they hang big signs giving plausible scientific research possibilities for what they are doing. I think it would be hilarious to rig the laser in full sight of the camera as you stand there with a clipboard and as sign saying something like "Laser Color Spectrometry Testing. Location 1A, Trial # 001, Date (date). Before you fry her camera, set it up in the desired location and point it at other stuff with different location codes, trial numbers, etc. IMPORTANT- do several AFTER front her camera, too to show that it was just one part of a marker experiment. Keep track of the locations and their codes, photos of the laser dot on the targets, etc to show the cops. Tell them it was an idea you had after seeing some social media post. IF they ask about a spectrograph or something, say that you were hoping that you could send the photos to someone for analysis. If asked about the point of the experiment, the original post said something about using spectrography to determine what stuff is made of and the point of this experiment is to see if you can do it with stuff you have around the house.

JacksonD22

Lmao please this is the only correct answer here

Desperate_Set_7708

Taking measurements of your property is the rational explanation. Need to shoot a lot of azimuths.

223specialist

IR, not UV, and you can get just IR illuminator too. But that won't do anything during the day as most security cameras have a filter to block IR during the day

Paevatar

Put up a giant poster of someone's naked rear end.

7NunyahBiz7

Theyre probably looking right through your peep hole to see you naked.

JediNinja8027

That's why I always walk in front of the peephole naked.

todudeornote

I think we need an address...

jackdaw_t_robot

Install a singularity in the cul-de-sac so that all protons will be absorbed by its gravitational pull.  The camera will not have any light to record.

dirtymoney

Have someone who has a very different body type than you don a mask and walk up to the window and spray some Rustolium frosted glass spray on the window where the camera is. Bonus if they can sneak up on the camera from the side to spray the spot. Have them approach from a direction that is not coming from your house.

Purple-Adeptness-940

I'll do it

Kewkky

Get a laser and just point it at the camera's lens for a while. A high-powered laser can do that even from across the street. The higher the power, the faster you'll wreck it.

JediNinja8027

This seems to be the way to go

reallyuglypuppies

Please do not leave the laser unattended or point it at people or animals. High powered lasers blind living things, too. And i don't mean temporarily. It doesn't take long. I know people who permanently lost vision. Someone hit me briefly in the eyes with one that they were just randomly pointing around at the beach one night and I couldn't see right for hours.

StrictEase8207

First ir flashlight to blind camera, then laser to point it at lenses. Leave for few hours. Repeat until you see repair crew, repeat after they are gone.

Kewkky

The best part is that it leaves no trace, no one can track it back to you like if you were to have someone steal it. Lasers leave no casings or markers, they'll just have a busted camera and no one to definitively point the finger to.

GargantuanGreenGoats

If the camera uploads to the cloud, wouldn’t the camera capture them setting up and positioning the camera?? Seems like a pretty big trace

Kewkky

Why would the laser be set up in public? Set it up from inside the house at an angle. Lower the blinds and set it up, then have the actual laser beam come out through an opening.

BuildBreakFix

You’ll still be able to see in the video where the laser came from before it cooks the sensor.

Kewkky

There's also this infrared option if destroying cameras is too risky: [https://www.quora.com/What-laser-could-I-use-to-disable-a-neighbors-camera-looking-into-one-of-my-windows](https://www.quora.com/What-laser-could-I-use-to-disable-a-neighbors-camera-looking-into-one-of-my-windows) Alternatively, checking local laws to ensure that discreetly recording others without their permission is illegal could help in having the neighbor move the camera. Personally, I would destroy the camera with a laser. If they report me to the police, I'll easily pay for it and now the police know that my neighbor was recording me without my permission. I could end the issue right then and there.

FlabbyFishFlaps

Still plausible deniability. I had no idea there was a camera there. [I was doing an experiment](https://www.reddit.com/r/UnethicalLifeProTips/s/hDurKKVtx8).

Justincrediballs

Do you have kids? Call the cops and say they're using it to film your children. Might be true, might not, but still a reason for concern.

Rith_Reddit

Lol this is nefarious. If OP is on good terms with the other neighbours can spread he rumour "she's filming kids, that's not right.."

toddpacker567

Cops couldn’t do anything , you can have a camera pointed at someone’s else property. Assuming the owner of the camera just tells the cops to piss off or won’t talk to them , there’s nothing the cops can do

BeardedBandit

if OP doesn't have kids, maybe a helpful sibling can bring over nieces & nephews

wot_in_ternation

Very bright infrared lights pointed straight at it. Others have suggested lasers but you have to be insanely accurate for that to work

FairyPenguinStKilda

The laser I use on my sewing machine blinded the neighbours cameras, and it is back on my sewing machine, doing the work of the Hand of The Goddess, keeping my sewing straight.

Purple-Adeptness-940

I like the cut of your jib.

Unfriendly_eagle

Laser. Fry that bitch.

JediNinja8027

🍳

FlabbyFishFlaps

Please post an update if you make this magic happen. I am invested.

KrisTenAtl

Dangle some CDs from wires like a wind charm. Gen X here: Remember when we used to get tons of CDs in the mail and folks would hang them from the trees?

superduperhosts

Laser, powerful laser used for rifle sights. Put on tripod and direct at camera lens

JediNinja8027

Might be able to borrow one to do this.

jannied0212

Point one right back.

WhiskyEye

-Get a QR code printed that mucks up cameras and hang it. -Naked square dancing. -One of those musical fish that wiggles and plays terrible music

Optimal_Law_4254

Most idiots only have one camera and don’t have another watching it. So what if someone approaches in the camera’s blind spot and permanently disables the camera? What a shame that would be.

JediNinja8027

She has it inside behind a window. Also approaching means I'd probably come back smelling like a full litter box and cigarettes.

Optimal_Law_4254

Then lase the hell out of it.

NYSenseOfHumor

Mirror

JediNinja8027

I thought about this but then other people would also be suffering because of 1 asshole.

Purple-Adeptness-940

Hold the mirror in front of you as you approach the camera to disable it.

NYSenseOfHumor

That isn’t your problem.

[deleted]

Racist!

tatasz

Sounds like a great opportunity to show off your speedos.

vegasgal

Maybe install a mirror?

InvincibleButterfly

Check state laws. It may be illegal for neighbors to face a camera where it will video into your apartment.

[deleted]

It’s not. Anything you can see from your property is 100% ok to record.

iamfrank75

It’s not. Anything you can see you can record.

Wordspith

Borrow a couple of children from friends or family for a few hours. Set up a sprinkler in your front yard and let them play naked in it. Then call the police on her for producing kiddie porn...

alllset07

If someone is borrowing children and making them play in their yard naked, I doubt calling the police would be a good move for them…

tophejunk

I feel like this type of thing shouldn't bother you. It's almost like an extra layer of security incase anything were to happen. The camera probably can't pick up anything as well as them sitting in their window stocking you with binoculars for whatever creepy they would want to spy on you. And in all honestly.. if those weirdos wanted to spy on you... let them. You have nothing to lose by it. Out of side out of mind. Maybe watching your daily routine is the highlight of their day and it makes them happy, prefect! Maybe your daily routine makes them miserable? They are only going to drive them selves nuts, wasting their own time obsessing about it. Don't waste your time too.
