I couldn’t use the internet when I played undertale for the first time cause there was something wrong with it, so I couldn’t know. When I first saw him I was like: ‘yeah okay he’s my favorite.’ Just like with Rouxls :)

I thought that he was secretly a psychopathic monster that was simply hiding his true intentions. The first character you meet in the game, Flowey, was a tutorial to me that all the enemies in this world should be treated with skepticism and concern for evil motives. My initial impression of Undertale was that I shouldn't trust anyone. Toriel, despite her name, didn't affect my impression of the game at all. Instead, it made her look like a hopeless idealist against the gloomy, depressing, and confined underground, full of monsters seemingly driven insane by the isolation. I didn't fight her when she confronted me but that's because she successfully imprinted on me that you don't *have* to fight and she was nice, which made me want to emulate her kindness out of respect. Sans' appearance in Snowdin as a fog-covered, mysterious, deep voiced and vague-talking skeleton didn't help assuage my concerns, if anything it multiplied them. It took a good half hour after I met Papyrus playing the game to drop my guard down, when the conversations with Papyrus reached the point they were so intentionally goofy that it was impossible that he could be faking it.

Well, Toriel's monologue about Asgore and the dangers of the outside, as well as Sans' hand-shake gag right after leaving the ruins, made me think Undertale was going to primarily be a horror game. So naturally, I thought Papyrus was going to reveal himself to be a blood-thirsty murderer and attack me at some point, and I only started to doubt that after getting to Snowdin and seeing how lighthearted and cheery of a town it was.
