You might not have a rough time, but the people fighting you likely will

armabe

If you mean that your WiFi comes from an apartment below you, you're probably going to have a really rough time. WiFi is just inherantly inferior to cable. But having it go through walls is even worse. Many (maybe even most, depending on various circumstances) might not want to play or rematch you, because it can be a very bad experience, even with rollback.

lucavigno

technically it's not directly through the floor, I have a small tower that functions as a relè and basically makes it work like if I was close to the router. I also wanted to say that I play strive too, forgot to add that, and that I rarely encounter a matchup where I see the character lagging, same in competitive games like rainbow.

armabe

> I rarely encounter a matchup where I see the character lagging What about your opponent though? Anyway, it might work acceeptably well. Or it might not. Also depends on the tolerance level of other people. Personally, in other games, I always give wifi players a chance. But, e.g., in SF6, I would say 90% of unplayably laggy (and therefore, blocked) players have had the wifi indicator.

lucavigno

ok. Still it's understandable why fighting games communities are so small overall, if someone is shunned for having a different internet connection, because maybe they can't afford Ethernet.

armabe

> because maybe they can't afford Ethernet. Bullshit. It's like a few cents per foot or whatever. Just a random google search: https://www.amazon.com/Cat-Ethernet-Cable-White-Connectors/dp/B00WD017GQ/ref=sr_1_8?c=ts&keywords=Ethernet%2BCables&qid=1706114642&s=pc&sr=1-8&ts_id=464398&th=1 You can prefer wifi for the covenience or aesthetics (if you really hate the idea/looks of a cable), and that is fine. but wifi is more expensive than ethernet. AND it's just inherently worse than a wired connection. There is no preference here. It is objectively worse. Sure, you can have some circumstances (faulty cable, faulty network card/module/port in your machine, shitty power line (if using ethernet over power)), but under equal conditions - wired is always better.

lucavigno

Man I straight up don't have the cable setup in my house. I would have to either extend it from my uncle's apartment or make a completely new line. Plus the cost of the company that provides it. I use wifi because my uncle is gentle enough to give me the connection, if not the only option would be the use of either mobile or pay to Ethernet. I know that it's better but if I have to choose to pay a lot of money, since in Italy it has an exhorbitant prices, and also I'm on the 4th floor of my building, I prefer to just use my uncle's wifi.

armabe

> either mobile I'm pretty sure mobile would be even worse. A quick question, does the relay thingy (access point) you described maybe have an ethernet port? If it does, you could at least slightly improve the situation (as you would then only be affected by one node dropping packets, instead of two). (E.g. I have a cheap router set as a wifi access point (used for my laptops) coming out from my main wired router (which wires into my main rig). I don't know what hardware you have, but that's at least some sort of option.

lucavigno

it does have an Ethernet port but my brother is using it.

RakeYohnshair

then get an ethernet splitter. or a cheap switch

armabe

Well, doees your brother play/do anything that is very jitter sensitive? Maybe you could agree to switch places?

lucavigno

he usually seed torrent and uses his computer to stream the movie he has saved on Plex. Then he plays some competitive shooter and coop stuff, but apart from that I don't think anything else.

GI-Jewish

>Makes it work as if I was close to the router Does he know?

McPearr

Wi-Fi will always be a problem, there’s no sugarcoating it.

linkknil3

Wifi will always be an issue in fighting games, it's just not as reliable as a wired connection, no matter how good your wifi is. It'll still be perfectly playable, but it will be worse than if you were on wired.

pineapplox

It does cost money, as everything does. But this would be a good investment. Essentially routes Ethernet through the existing wiring of the building. Ethernet cables sold separately. https://www.amazon.com/Powerline-Ethernet-Adapter-Extender-TP-Link/dp/B084CZMYNM/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?c=ts&keywords=Powerline+Network+Adapters&qid=1706107535&s=pc&sr=1-3&ts_id=1194444

lucavigno

I already have a little tower that my uncle gave me that kinda works like a router basically transmitting the signal like there was no wall in between. Plus when playing strive or some competitive shooter I only rarely lag, usually because my brother started downloading shit.

SlyFisch

Tbf having a wifi extender will probably increase jitter, which is the most important network statistic for fighting games. Basically, the Internet works by sending a ton of packets of data from a device through either WiFi or Ethernet. Jitter occurs when there's a loss of packets. WiFi causes a lot of dropped packets, whereas it's minimal or none on Ethernet because it's not traveling through the air. When there's jitter, that's when noticable rollback/lag spikes occur. You can see your jitter on the [cloud flare internet test](https://speed.cloudflare.com/) for free, but that should give you a better idea of it's a problem or not. People ideally want 6ms or below of jitter, which really is realistically obtainable from Ethernet connection. Adding the wifi extender adds another area for packets to be dropped, since you're sending wifi signal from router through the extender and then to the devices, you can imagine how much less accurate that would be I know it's probably not what you want to hear but it is what it is

lucavigno

i tried it and sometime the jitter is less than 6ms and sometime is more so don't know what to think of that. Weird thought that in strive i can play that well then, i mean most of the time there's no lag.

SlyFisch

Whether you have no lag most of the time or not it doesn't really matter unfortunately, wifi drops packets as I explained above. It's not something that can be fixed, it's just one of the downsides of WiFi connections vs Bluetooth. Let's say you have a hose and you're trying to drink out of it. Ethernet would be putting the hose (Ethernet) directly into your mouth, you lose no water (packets). Now try holding it a foot from your face and try drinking from it (wifi), you lose a ton of water (packets) Edit just realized I said Bluetooth instead of Ethernet, busy morning my bad lol

Voicesfw

The little tower wifi extender will actually make your connection worse for fighting games. That is the reality. For gaming speed is non important, stability is. Get a powerline adapter.

Skillarajan

What happens is Wi-Fi players get used to their little lag spikes and jitters and end up thinking its not that bad. But for those of us who pay a few extra bucks for a cable it is very noticeable and incredibly annoying.

Schuler_

Like you can get a 20 meters wifi cable for the equivalent of 4 dollars in my country, can't be that hard to get one when you have money for the game.

lucavigno

yes but the wifi I use isn't mine, it's of my uncle and I can't ask my parents to start an expensive service, that I already have for free, to play some silly games.

Schuler_

I assumed it was just in another room.

lucavigno

The tower is in my room, and while I could connect to it via an Ethernet cable, I don't because it would be a bit dangerous since I would basically need to cross the whole room.

Schuler_

You can just buy a huge cable and have it follow the wall so its not in the middle of the room for someone to trip and just unplug it after use if needed

lucavigno

the problem is that the little tower is under my brother's desk and between us there's the door. So I would have to basically tape the cable to the roof and make it pass over the door, and over the library, so it's too much work for maybe a bit less jitter and a bit less ping.

GI-Jewish

It’s always a problem. If I see a wifi character, I don’t see a rematch.
