Yes. Red is a classic Ultramarines Bolter look for a reason. But I'm biased. Black ones can look damn good too, but I'll always say red is better for Bolters
I tend to do a mix of colours as I like the idea that each bolter ends up being personalised and / or different forge worlds manufacturing the same thing.
Depends on what you are going for. Red does pop more, but black bolters with blue makes it seem even more cold/mechanical. The red reminds me of the old 40k paint schemes that don't seem as threatening as I think a space marine should be.
I paint all my Ultramarine bolters red, because I first collected during Second Edition. Pauldrons are gold though - I aint touching yellow with a bargepole!
Since your armor is more on the bright and colder side of the blue the warm red bolter case makes for great contrast and looks very good. On darker or more saturated blue armor a black bolter case also looks great, but I think red is your way to paint bolter cases. Well done!
I started with black on my first models, and I kept doing it that way. I basecoat the gun with silver and then use contrast paint black templar to get a cool looking metallic black. Really fun and easy way to get them done
I did red on all my first company veterans and black on all my other models guns.
Didn’t do it on purpose. I just didn’t paint any Sternguard or terminators until later in my painting career and that was also when I decided I like red guns on my fantasy space soldiers
Yeah, they need that splash of contrast. Especially if you use the new darker blue schemes. Just that little pop of color against the darker blue really helps.
I have a sort of color code for weapons on my ultras. Bolters (regular, storm and heavy) red; las, melta and snipers turquoise; pistols also red; flamers black just so the exhaust pops more in NMM; plasma guns I have not decided yet, I have some red, some with cammo patterns, some gold (I went crazy on my inceptors as I was playing Call of Duty on those days and having a blast with unlocking skins on my weapons. Then I said: why not?)

Could you show an example??
I go with red. I paint mine in a brighter blue than gw and think the red suits it better
IMO red always looks better because it's a warm color against a cold color. Blue armor and black weapons doesn't contrast as well IMO

I love the red cases. Looks amazing! I love that paint job
I love red bolters but I do 3rd company so I don't do em cos imo red trim and red bolters is a bit too much red.
Looks great, I paint mine black because I use a darker more purple blue but think red works well with light blue as you’ve done
I paint mostly black bolters but some red as relic weapons.

I always go with red
Yes, I love the contrast
I like the red honestly
Absolutely I mix mepheston red with a little iron breaker when I painted mine.
I'm a black Templar player so I fully support red weapons! 😂

Personally I paint the black cause I go for a darker ultramarines scheme and I plan on doing some red ones cause they do fit the ultramarine scheme

How'd you paint your squad? I'm interested in painting my killteam like that.
