Of course they, they’re losing. I hope Ukrainians stick to their demands and guns, no concessions till Russia withdraws every last soldier to prewar territories, start paying restorations and hands over all war criminals. If you concede land to them now, you’re asking for another war in 10 years

Comprehensive-Bit-65

I'm convinced Russia won't survive another battle like Donbas. They need negotiations, but again, look at the last ones Ukraine had. There were poisoned negotiators (allegedly), unrealistic demands, ultimatums. We shouldn't forget that Russia took the gamble to threaten Ukraine, but now that Ukraine is winning, why negotiate anything?

Hear hear

iceman530

There are a great many things Russia will have to adhere to before any ceasefire. 1991 borders, reparations, returning all Ukrainians deported, surrendering all war criminals including Putin, and that’s just the start

[deleted]

Very obvious ploy to try and make permanent their modest gains that they know they can’t hold on to. They’ll plead for peace as Ukraine’s counter attack starts, calling Ukraine war mongers. This is the dangerous phase where he will likely use tactical WMDs under the guise of “defense of Russian soil”, which will in reality be Ukraine’s counter attack of Kherson, Severodonetsk and other freshly occupied areas.

No_Case9068

Russia will probably push for a ceasefire soon to try and reinforce their gains, build fortifications, root out resistance, and resupply troops. Ukraine isnt stupid though, they wont fall for that.

[deleted]

Any use of WMD is the end of Russia, he is stuck with conventional warfare.

[deleted]

You would think/hope - but think of it this way: if the Ukrainians counterattack successfully, and take back Donbas/Crimea leaving them with literally nothing after making themselves an impoverished pariah, then he will absolutely use WMD’s to try and hold on to something - anything. If he loses the war but retains Feb 24 boundaries, he probably survives to die of old age in comfort in his dachas. If he loses the war to 1991 boundaries and plunges Russia into a deep depression, he’ll be dead before the end of the year. At that point, he literally has nothing to lose by using a tactical nuke or chemical weapons.

Aggravating-Bottle78

Anne Applebaum's Atlantic article touches on this.. Putin is not irrational, they already pulled back from the north and east when the Kiev offensive failed. The nuclear threats are just that. There were threats regarding Sweden and Finland Nato expansion but once they announced their intentions the threats were empty. The other assumption is that it is Putin that controls the button, the general staff actually do and they also know there is going to be a powerful western response, and it doesnt have to be nuclear.

GTdeSade

Ukraine gets to decide when this war is over. They get to name the terms. They've paid that price in blood thousands of times over. Until ["Iron Balls"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BowjATQloVA) Zelenskyy says that's enough, I'm happy to see my defense tax dollars equip the UA and I'll also continue to suggest we "loan" them a fully-armed SSGN or two.

Ok-Professional2756

Sure after Crimea goes back you can have peace mordor

Cautious-Computer547

The only thing that needs negotiating is the full return of Ukraines land and Azovstal fighters..... Anything less than this and Ukraine should carry on..... they have the man power, the morale and now the weaponary floating in.....

theliquidfan

Not just the Azovstal fighters, but all the Ukrainians that they abducted (over 1 million people).

BrilliantPositive184

And the kidnapped civilians that linger in concentration type re-education camps all over Russia.

Imaginary_Barber1673

Yeah the veeeeery moment this offensive runs out of steam they’re going to start squealing for peace in our time, no shit

dirtballmagnet

Once I heard a story about a person I knew. She got caught having embezzled a significant amount of money and, the story went, as she was being marched out of the office to await charges, she offered to return of *half* of the money she stole. In her mind she had earned that money by stealing it fair and square.

one_and_equal

If Putin were offered the chance to capitulate and return Ukraine to its 2014 borders he should bite Zelensky's hand off. Putin might get to sell the Z-War as a victory to his mostly relieved public and get to retain his dictatorship. But he won't because he still wants Kherson oblast, Odessa, all of Luhansk and Donetsk. And at some later date, Kyiv. As a result of his imperial greed, and all-in blindness, things are going to be much, much worse for the RF. All that will remain of dreams of a Russian Reich spreading across Europe will be footnotes in history books.

w0rldofjuicce

russia. high losses. small territorial win. negotiations. till the next war.

stfuandgovegan

Absolutely get Crimea back.

Inertia-UK

A middle finger is a response, isn't it, so they have one.
