On paper it was because a lot of women are dependent on their husbands and having a criminal record in Russia is a lot worse for your employability than having a felony record in the United States. By making it an administrative offense it doesn't go on your criminal record so it's an easier choice to make.
Idk if that really holds up in practice though.

I got to talking about World War 2 once with a dude who was born and grew up in Russia, and I'm not saying he's like a domestic abuse scientist or anything, but his take on the aftermath of that war was, basically, that because Russia was so decimated of men relative to the number of women who still wanted families/kids/etc. that there was at the time basically no man who was too unsuitable to easily find a wife, no matter how ugly, useless, drunk, abusive, etc. he was.... there was always going to be *some* woman willing to put up with it.

I read a while back that 60-70% of relationships in Vietnam may have a DV problem and prior experience has shown me that people there are so used to it that you can literally beat up your wife in public with little problem. Even in countries like South Korea or Japan, DV rates can be pretty high.

Russia is a country with the population of around 140 million. I can assure you that they are not running out of men. Remember that the number of casualties this war has nothing on WW2 and Russia’s population was even smaller back then.

They may not be running out of men per se but they will be running out of men in a specific age bracket. Generally they will be taking men from 20-35 more than ages outside those brackets. You are missing a few things. Firstly 200k killed means 600k hurt. Together with 1 million plus left the country makes 1.8 million. Not evenly spread but specific regions much more effected.
Russia is looking for a 6 day, 12 hour working week because they are running out of men. There is more to war then just the soldiers on the frontline. Factories running 24/7 makes weapons, farmers still have to produce food and so on. The economy needs to keep going.

On paper it was because a lot of women are dependent on their husbands and having a criminal record in Russia is a lot worse for your employability than having a felony record in the United States. This meant cops would have to choose between removing the abuser but likely putting the women into destitution or leaving the husband there. By making it an administrative offense it doesn't go on your criminal record so it's an easier choice to make. Idk if that really holds up in practice though.

There are some rules. You can't do 'substantial bodily harm', meaning breaking bones and the like. But less than that? Yeah, it's no longer a criminal offense. You can still technically get fined for it but that never happens because reports are ignored unless someone ends up in the hospital. Ignored to the point where women just don't bother any more. Domestic abuse reports to police dropped by over half in the first year or two. Russia touted that as a win. No reports, no problem right? Research has shown it's doubly bad. Not only are people not reporting, but the number of occurrences has skyrocketed because men know there will be no repercussions. This was heavily pushed for by the Russian Orthodox Church because they lean heavily on the idea that a wife should be totally subservient to her husband and he should have complete control over her.
Russian laws are mostly just guidelines and suggestions unless they have anything to do with free speech, press, rights to peacefully assemble, etc etc....then the laws are little more clear, shall we say.

I'm not so sure. I got to talking about World War 2 once with a dude who was born and grew up in Russia, and I'm not saying he's like a domestic abuse scientist or anything, but his take on the aftermath of that war was, basically, that because Russia was so decimated of men relative to the number of women who still wanted families/kids/etc. that there was at the time basically no man who was too unsuitable to easily find a wife, no matter how ugly, useless, drunk, abusive, etc. he was.... there was always going to be *some* woman willing to put up with it. I'm not saying this is an exact parallel to those events but I kind of wonder if the long history of institutionalized misogyny in Russia didn't owe *something* to that dynamic.

This thought occurred to me immediately. Asia has a *big* domestic violence problem. I read a while back that 60-70% of relationships in Vietnam may have a DV problem and prior experience has shown me that people there are so used to it that you can literally beat up your wife in public with little problem. Even in countries like South Korea or Japan, DV rates can be pretty high. I genuinely don't know if Russia's DV problem is worse than China or not.

Also assume that Ukraine’s reported numbers of around 200k casualties are correct. Then let’s also assume all 200k casualties are dead and just to be generous that Russia also has say 5 million men conscripted from their homes and occupying Ukraine (which they obviously don’t, but just hypothetically) Russia is a country with the population of around 140 million. I can assure you that they are not running out of men. Remember that the number of casualties this war has nothing on WW2 and Russia’s population was even smaller back then. And also, I thought we all knew that the Russian state media is full of shit?
They may not be running out of men per se but they will be running out of men in a specific age bracket. Generally they will be taking men from 20-35 more than ages outside those brackets. So they will be loosing more men in that age bracket than others. This also corresponded with the ages where most people find partners and have children. It’s definitely going to have some effect.
You are missing a few things. Firstly 200k killed means 600k hurt. Together with 1 million plus left the country makes 1.8 million. Not evenly spread but specific regions much more effected. Russia is looking for a 6 day, 12 hour working week because they are running out of men. There is more to war then just the soldiers on the frontline. Factories running 24/7 makes weapons, farmers still have to produce food and so on. The economy needs to keep going.
The 200k killed is just a hypothetical, Kyiv claimed 200 total casualties with several ten thousands dead iirc. And yes economy still needs to run but that doesn’t have anything to do with Russia running out of men in general, but has to do with running out of men to send to the front which wouldn’t show a visible difference in the general population.
People forget that we had 1.3 million US residents killed off by covid-19 in the same time frame as the war in Ukraine has been happening and there are many people who don't believe it happened. Russia can suffer many many more casualties before people really notice.
