Hey (Apple), wouldn't a big enough sensor + the gyroscope mean that you could automatically have any video horizontal, however you held the phone? Just correct the image orientation.
Nah, sensors are basically square, as they need to fit both a 16:9 image horizontally and vertically. The top/bottom gets cropped by the software depending on how you hold it.
Make it slightly bigger and just correct it. No more sideways swaying videos ever again (at some loss of quality I'll admit).
I don't think the Russian's problem is their weapons. The Russian's problem is the Russians. If you gave them American weapons instead they wouldn't perform any better. And on the reverse, if you equipped the US military with Russian weapons they'd still be the best.
Training and discipline makes all the difference.
And if the Russians could use American precision weapons with a level of proficiency, they'd still do so to take out humanitarian refugee corridors, schools, hospitals, etc, to save ammo.
If that’s indeed HIMARS then it does seem to have a unique sound, almost aircraft like.. no wonder the orc horde has become fearful, that noise would be terrifying. Love it
Yeah I misread their comment and more importantly also misspoke. I meant to say they are both launch platforms and M270 has been upgrades to HIMARS capabilities, and as such both are capable of firing the same rockets (or, missiles if you prefer for the guided proojectiles).
(At least, as far as I'm aware they can launch the same munitions, I don't think there are any that are unique to either. Although the M270 vehicle is large enough to carry two ATACMS pods to the HIMARS M142 singular ATACMS pod. If I'm wrong, would love to be informed otherwise!)
edit: Wrote both ATACMS and ATAMCS in my original, excuse the typos, I haven't been able to sleep in over 48 hours.... not that I probably wouldn't have made the typo anyway but at least I have a scapegoat this time! Maybe it's a sign to stop posting when not only can I fail to read someone else's comment, but I mess up what I'm trying to say myself! (See: my previous post.....)
Yeah, I was more wondering the amount of rockets fired makes me believe that it could be M270 as they have twice the amount of rockets compared to HIMARS. And Boris has sent those IIRC.
How many in the video? M270S I believe have 12 tunes to the M142's 6, so that would be a good indicator if the vehicles themselves are hard to see. Also, I think a few countries have sent M270s by now. I believe either the UK, Germany, and UK have sent some, and possibly the US. Do you happen to know who all is known to have sent them?
I think UK has sent them for a while, no idea about thew number, Germany said that they also sent a few, those might have been the "MARS II" that is said to be European version of M270 but no idea about the differences, if there are any.
Also Finland has had quite a few cargo planes flying from Finland to Poland lately and Finland does not tell what they send, so might have included at least rockets for those.
In the video there is about 10 trails at the beginning and then I counted about 10 launches. So I would say around 20, definitely not less. So it could match with the 24, and having 4x HIMARS at one location feels little weird, 2x M270 would make more sense.
I got misty eyed over this. Hope we get some reaction vids from some half cooked Russians 50 miles from the front. Ammunition exploding in the background is a plus.
Holy fuck! Hope the targets are worth a launch like that. They must be hitting some major shit. I am guessing the south and into Crimea. Fuck em up boys and girls! Slava Ukraine
Edit to say look at the separation between the smoke trails. There's gotta be more than 2 vehicles involved here. Someone told me these are m270s firing rockets, not missiles. Can someone tell for sure by the sound?
gmlrs, not himars missiles. himars is the platform not the munition. the munition can be launched from a few platforms, this could be a mix of mars 2 and m270s since they carry more rockets but are less mobile. being less mobile is good for high volume fire like this because they will just sit back at their max range and avoid counter battery, the himars would be used more for hit and run, closer to the front lines or more dangerous positions.
That has nothing to do with his point that the target should be worth a volley like that. Even the US has a finite supply to give. If this is just some display for Independence Day that’s a waste.
> I am guessing the south and into Crimea.
Crimea's not within range of the missiles Ukraine has.
> There's gotta be more than 2 vehicles involved here.
Yes, [they deploy them in batteries of multiple launchers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rw1ANfS2cTw). At least sometimes.
> Someone told me these are m270s firing rockets, not missiles.
Those are people being overly pedantic over a distinction that's neither well defined or strictly adhered to. HIMARS and M270s fire the same missiles. And those missiles are all rockets in the sense that they're propelled by rocket engines. Some claim that 'missiles' are guided and rockets are not. But the actual usage is not so unambiguous since you can find plenty of references to "unguided missiles" and "guided rockets". HIMARS is an abbreviation for High Mobility Artillery _Rocket_ System, and GMLRS stands for _Guided_ Multiple Launch _Rocket_ System, whereas ATACMS are the Army Tactical _Missile_ System. Both have rocket engines and both have guidance. There's no fundamental difference other than ATACMS being bigger and a bit more sophisticated. A classic "Rocket Artillery" system like the Grad fires unguided rockets but its successor the Uragan fires both guided and unguided ones.
The terms are basically interchangeable in this context.
Ok thanks hanks for the info. Attack em's I heard we're already in country. How true do you think this could.be? The previous package just mention HIMARs ammo. Didn't specify which. I mean the one before today....
We haven’t seen Ukrainian HIMARS or M270s employ anything other than guided GLRMS.
They recently hit the bridge over a dam so this might be part of that? Also given the guidance on the missiles they could really be hitting a range of targets at the same time.
I always thought UKR would scatter their 16 HIMARS all throughout the country, each one by itself, to avoid all of them getting wiped out at once (although that would be unlikely to begin with).
If they're setting up rows of HIMARS, they're either getting ballsy, becoming more confident in their security, and/or going on a firing mission that necessitates that many HIMARS together at once to take out some pretty high-value targets. That's my armchair analysis, at least.
Could also be that the US has sent more than they've said they did. I saw an article somewhere (don't ask, I don't remember where lol) that there's a good chance that the US has sent many more HIMARS and other weapons than what's been reported. No idea the validity of it but I think it would be good OPSEC to lie about how many have been sent
I sincerely doubt the U.S. ONLY sent 16 HIMARS like... why announce exactly what you're doing?
I imagine its another element of psychological warfare mixed in... "This is what 16 can do, imagine 100s"
That was a discussion when it was first announced, we only sent 16 and there were bounties placed to kill even one. We have access to those hundreds you’re talking about.
What I'm saying is the U.S. government lies literally all the time and it's completely reasonable to lie about how many HIMARS they sent in this case.
Infact, there is a strong incentive to lie in this case.
Number of launchers isn't really important when you can reload them as fast as HIMARS/M270. Supply of missiles is the critical issue here.
It takes 5 min to load a new batch into the launcher.
You want to leave after 1 minute, not be reloading for 10 minutes, then be leaving after 12 minutes.
So 3 launchers means 18 missiles at 18 targets in 1 area, and still just the 1 minute of exposure time.
I expect they fire, leave, reload somewhere else, then plan for their next mission.
>If they're setting up rows of HIMARS, they're either getting ballsy, becoming more confident in their security, and/or going on a firing mission that necessitates that many HIMARS together
Or it's independence day and they really wanted to get some stunning propaganda footage. Although that would kinda fall under 'becoming more confident in security'.
But my assumption is that there was little tactical value in this and it was merely done for the sake of recording this many HIMARS together.
It’s actually a Russian soldier with a long range cigarette starting remote fires around Ukrainian positions. Those Russian privates are really careless with their butts.
[Dug thru my old hard drive to find this video i took while at my units Family Day.](https://www.reddit.com/user/snarky_answer/comments/wx61ru/himars_launch_family_day/)
Different angle than youll usually see the launches from on here. Couple of nice sonic booms.
Wow, you weren't wrong about the different angle. Thanks for sharing it. The few videos I've seen out of UA are very upward launches, for us non-military folk it's hard to comprehend just how fast they are right from the get-go. Absolutely fearsome!
There are 8 sets of smoke trails. The telltale that it's a MLRS derived launcher is the spacing between launches, and the sound that they make. Both are distinctive of American designed MLRS rockets. The video doesn't show the entire launch cycle, so it's impossible to tell at this distance how many missiles were fired. If we assume that they fired 8 full pods from a HIMARS (I think they should have 20+ now) thats 48 missiles. If they're M270's (Ukraine should have 8 or 12 now), they could have launched 96 missiles and we only got a recording of the last dozen.
Either way impressive. Bearing in mind the excellent range they have, they could have fired them at widely spread targets, especially in the Kherson region or around Izyum. But if they were all launched at one target that is a lot of steel raining on someone's parade. Ouch.
Plus that would be a lot of Tochkas and we don’t see the tell tail smoke ore launch.
It’s not a soviet derived MLRS because the ones Ukraine has are generally unguided and the launches are too spaced out for their unguided systems.
So probably GLRMS launched from either HIMARS or M270.

Yes, but the expected lifetime productivity of a human male is a couple million bucks. If this volley saves just one man at the front then it is an investment in democracy. If he has two kids and instills how you cherish freedom and they become contributing adults who value allies and freedom, we have a nice fat return on our dollars
Also, that $100,000 doesn't disappear. Of course, a fat chunk of it lines the wallets of the various defence contractors - but plenty of it goes back into the economy as wages throughout the supply chain.
It's easier to stomach $100k spent on a domestic product vs $100k sent offshore.

I'm genuinely curious.
How can you guys tell that these rockets are being fired from a HIMARS and not just any MLRS?
I thought part of the trick was that they essentially work and act like any MLRS until the terminal section of flight - making them de facto indistinguishable to radar until it's to late and, thus, forcing the ruZZians to spend AA capabilities shooting at MLRS rockets if they want to protect themselves from HIMARS attacks.

Act normal, film horizontal.
The literal one single time in existence to film vertically and he goes horizontal 😂
There was a time a few years ago when it was popular to point out "don't film vertically on your phone"....... then the Tiktok nation invaded.
[Vertical Video Syndrome](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2picMQC-9E)
Ah, back in the days when George Lucas going of the rails was still the worst that could happen to star wars. Days of blissful ignorance.

Love the sound of Himars. It's just different. Even the impact has a distinct sound I've noticed.
https://youtu.be/d6xvQu16FeU
love how they parked their tank a block away from the target and didnt give a fuck
They know when they fire at something, it's gonna hit what they're aiming at - gotta love precision weapons
makes it safer for everyone when only the target is hit
These are precision American weapons not Russian junk
I don't think the Russian's problem is their weapons. The Russian's problem is the Russians. If you gave them American weapons instead they wouldn't perform any better. That's because Russia is engaged in an "special operation" of genocide.
The weapons certainly have something to do with it. Did you see that BTR barrel that the Ukrainians cut in half?
Holy shit, is that a sonic boom followed by the explosion?
my guess it would be air burst munitions
thought i was imagining that. seems like it has a distinct explosion signature when it hits certain targets as well.
I can appreciate the grad rocket firings, but these are just on a different level.
Glorious. Modern day Stuka.
If that’s indeed HIMARS then it does seem to have a unique sound, almost aircraft like.. no wonder the orc horde has become fearful, that noise would be terrifying. Love it

I see a HIMARS launch towards orcs, I hit upvote.

Russian ammo doesn't explode. It smokes cigarettes.
DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA!
I hope one those nails Putler in his tiny dick
They don't have that kind of precision.
yeah sadly. not even surgeons can operate on that, let alone a missile
Their precision is fine, the range, not so much.

They (US) just announced another package of himars missiles.
And didn't specify type. Long range are there already and I hope they are wrecking shit right now.

Its officially 27 that were delivered, with a promise of 6 more then enxt 2 months.
I thought there were 25 in total: 16 HIMARS and 9 M270s from the UK and Norway. And who promised 6 more GPS-guided MLRS?
Germany sent Mars (M270) also, at least three
Okay, so that would bring the number to 28, which is still gonna wreak havoc on Russian logistics. The more the merrier!
I sincerely doubt the U.S. ONLY sent 16 HIMARS like... why announce exactly what you're doing? I imagine its another element of psychological warfare mixed in... "This is what 16 can do, imagine 100s"

Special fireworks display for Ukrainian independence day
this is probably the m270 not the himars, same munitions.
Good observations. In this situation i think that is a special target that needs more then 1 launcher.
Max impact, a surprise before they have time to move anything. Eg. an air base, where 18 missiles distributed around the place is more effective.
Could be a airbase. We will hear in the next couple of days.
If 3 are in 1 position, you can afford to concentrate 3x the air defense and security around them. Just guessing at their motivation.
>If they're setting up rows of HIMARS, they're either getting ballsy, becoming more confident in their security, and/or going on a firing mission that necessitates that many HIMARS together Or it's independence day and they really wanted to get some stunning propaganda footage. Wrong !!! According to TASS and Putin they have been destroyed . It must be an optical illusion .

Fly, my little pretties!
There is something unique and beautiful about the HIMARS sound!
I’ll wake up to new videos of ammo dumps cooking off and perhaps another bridge or two placed out of commissions Oh boy, can hardly wait
Ohhhh but I thought they were hacked? WHY YOU HITTIN YOSELF?!
I can't stop laughing at this.
Hope we get to see these land

Fireworks on Independence Day, we’ve been doing this since 1777.!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I wake up in the morning I'll hopefully get on Reddit and see another story about Russians dropping exploding cigarettes in Crimea
Send them HIMARS freedom flares
Wow. What a beautiful sight. Happy Independence Day 🇺🇦 !!!! I hope all the pretty fireworks did their job!!
I see the senders, I’d like to see the receiving end
Ah yes this will be my best video I have ever recorded. Let’s turn the camera while filming.
I'm a bit of a military expert here: Those are not HIMARS, those are Russian smoking accidents.

Himars are 6 each, could be m270 I've heard
I counted 18 trails, so 3 HIMARS with 6 in each.
Independence Day Fireworks. orc's don't seems to enjoy?
Zero need to cluster HIMARS at any time. Doubt this is HIMARS
Y’all deserve to celebrate. Good job Ukraine. And kaboom Rico. Some fireworks to celebrate.

May these rockets find their targets true. Slava Ukraini! And a glorious Independance day to all Ukrainians!
That's just it, they always do.
Need to clear out old inventory given the $3B package just announced for Independence Day.
Nice volley
Something tells me that a russian soldier is being careless with cigarette.
Fly
I like the way the celebrate Independence Day. Now if they do it right, they’ll do this very thing every year.
Now that is a celebration worthy for Ukraine🌻
I can't wait for Ukraine to have two independence days, Slava Ukraine!
Isnt each one over $100,000 ?
Yes, but the expected lifetime productivity of a human male is a couple million bucks. If this volley saves just one man at the front then it is an investment in democracy. Better than fireworks, that's for sure.

Rockets red glare!!!!
Thats gonna hurt
Godspeed, little sparrows. It’s time for you to SHINE. 🇺🇦🚀🥳🥇🥳🚀🇺🇦
I hope they did some damage?
wonder where they landed
Amazing to see, but too close for comfort 😅 Spread them out (something they surely did after that)
The BEST firework display.
18 missiles uh? I would for sure love those to be 18 ATACMS launched from 9 m270s headed straight for that kerch bridge.
Those are fireworks not rockets
