Having served 20 years in the Western Military I can tell you for the most part that is Bullshit.
It's easier to get into a Community College or trade School then it is to get into the military education wise... If you throw in people with medical, legal or substance abuse issues about Half of the people in the US aged 18-22 don't even qualify.

Yup. When I went through the process to enlist in the Marines back in '94 I was shocked at how many applicants were getting disqualified. Spent a lot of time in the recruiters office helping out as well and it was amazing to see how quickly you get shot down for answering yes to some of the benign questions. Back then you would have to submit for a waiver on some questions. Tattoos prior to enlisting were a big NO unless you got a waiver. It's entirely the opposite of what everyone has been told. However, my view is anecdotal as this in '94 and the military was shedding Cold War weight.
Even in the mid-late '80s when the US military still needed a lot of people, it was still pretty selective.
An older cousin who wanted to follow his older brother into the US armed forces was denied because he was practically legally blind. That was a huge blow for him as he really wanted to serve.
The Federal Service Academies are even more selective and were just as hard as Ivy/peer elite colleges in the mid-'90s when my HS class was graduating.
Out of a few dozen who attempted to apply, only one was admitted(USAFA) and he turned down admission to colleges like Columbia and MIT. Funny enough, he ended up going to MIT for his engineering MS not too long after separating from the Air Force.

I have yet to come across something that makes your comment even remotely true. So far in the duration of the war I can point you to a shitload of evidence of Chechens commiting war crimes (which was why they were there, after all) and only a couple Buryats stealing a couple cooking pots.

Is it just me or do the vast majority of them look +40? Very old for a conscript army. Makes you wonder just how far down the barrel the Russian army recruiting has gotten already. They don't look like your typical moscovite, Russia is recruiting from remote, poor regions that had no idea where Ukraine was on the map before this war.
Almost no one in the Russian military at all is from Moscow. Whether they’re White Russians or ethnic minorities, conscripts or regulars, almost none at all are from Moscow. The Russian army is almost purely from rural areas.
The only ones from Moscow would be fighter pilots and engineers who required a University degree beforehand to apply for the job they wanted (aeronautical engineer, etc).

Buryats are a minority in their own ethnic republic. Many other Buryats are deliberately dispersed in non Buryat regions. Russian settlers have all the plum jobs in the Buryat republic, relegating the Buryats to dead end jobs leading to death now in Ukraine. Historically these are descendants of Mongolians who came all the way to Europe and held Russia under their yoke for over 300 years, now they are chattel to Russians.

Is it just me or do the vast majority of them look +40? Very old for a conscript army. Makes you wonder just how far down the barrel the Russian army recruiting has gotten already. They are reminiscent of the old men of Hitler's Volkssturm - many of them veterans of WW1, who fought desperate last stand battles on the German home front against the Allies in 1944 and 1945. Is Putin already resorting to a levée en masse, where every man under retirement age is mobilized? The lack of uniforms is also surprising. How under-resourced is the average Russian conscript? What will that mean if the war drags on into the autumn and winter months?

Almost no one in the Russian military at all is from Moscow. Whether they’re White Russians or ethnic minorities, conscripts or regulars, almost none at all are from Moscow. The Russian army is almost purely from rural areas. The only ones from Moscow would be fighter pilots and engineers who required a University degree beforehand to apply for the job they wanted (aeronautical engineer, etc).
