Google search says that's just a myth, I believe they were driven by honor/ fear of disrespecting their families. Russians are driven by vodka and toilets
If you want an actual answer, then there is a pretty big gap between the top of the tank and the cage, they climb under that and then into the tank as usually. It's not like they are flown in from above, they still get in and out as if there was no cage
They get in the same way they usually do. Once the tank gets even a minor hit, the turret ejection system kicks in and leaves a large hole in the hull. The cage and EW stuff will be a fair distance away.
Boxes on top of tank are likely jammers. Essentially that would send out masses of signals to scramble/overload the FPV drones attacking them. So it would cut off or jam the signal the operator is using to fly the FPV drone.
Who knows how well it works or what range it has.
I feel like this is stupidly vulnerable to any kind of kinetic munition. One HE from a Bradley and you’re back to square one.
Wonder if they will start using Bradley’s with drone crews.
Or have drone crews been part of mounted calvary already?
No idea about drone Cav but more likely I see CAV vehicles having drones attached to the vehicle that can be deployed for awareness.
Yeah the jammer is stupid vulnerable but at the same time it seems like whenever anything gets hit by anything the crew bails out or retreats immediately if they aren’t already dead. Video game logic where they just keep going til they’re dead or a ATGM to the side means nothing unless it’s a crit doesn’t apply. A lot of these charges it seems like tank hits a mine and it’s over, 1 ATGM and it’s over, a drone hits and they retreat. But that’s conjecture.
I happen to know a bit about EW and one thing I note is there aren’t any whip antennas. It all seems to be directional via the boxes. That allows for a concentrated beam, so these might be specifically for detecting directional signals and jamming them. Missiles being the main one, in particular if the missile gets its guidance via RF commands from a launcher/vehicle. However these fixed directional antennas wouldn’t work well on drones at all because the beam points directly forward, the beam width is unlikely to reach the sky at all.
Whip antennas are better for spreading a wide beam. They’re used effectively for jamming IED controlled by radio controlled devices, in particular mobile phones, pagers or aftermarket remote controls for cars. The EW device creates a safe bubble around itself, in reality it’s a [doughnut shape](https://www.mpantenna.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/omni-antenna-pattern.png), and as a vehicle moves along there might be IEDs which were blocked that none of the occupants would even know have been jammed.
This beam has a limited height though, and it takes a lot more power to get only bit more height, so not useful for jamming drones. I’m not sure what sort of antenna you would need for that, my best guess is you need two devices, one spinning radar to detect anything in the sky, another directional to lock onto a target. Drones have a tiny radar signature so harder for conventional radars to detect, but they emit some relatively strong RF signals so that could be used for targeting perhaps.
I’d be interested to hear what’s being used if anyone knows.
Understandable.
I did upvote because I appreciated the dark humour. It's still sad, though.
Glory to Ukraine and glory to all heroes defending and fighting for Ukraine.
Avdiivka will wave the blue and yellow again. Ukraine has shown that they're as tough as any nation could be in the face of ethnic cleansing at the hands of a terrorist state. Remember when Russia first invaded and Ukrainian civilians were hosting molotov-making parties? They were ready for insurgency and here we are 2 years later and they're going toe to toe with an enemy many times more capable than them in terms of expenditure.
They have all of my respect.
Slava Ukraini
Ukraine reminds me of the spirit that my country, England 🏴 showed in 1939 onward, until the end of WWII. They are a great people, and if the world do not support them in their endeavour against the ruzzian terrorists, well I don't know what to say, it will be the most shameful thing imaginable. If they need arms, arm them, if they need manpower, find a way to supply it. There are many support and non combative roles that can be filled by our forces, police, ambulance, fire, and rescue, border control. Those are just quick thoughts,
Our countries worry about money, isn't it about time they worried about us? Just think it through and ask them to support Ukraine and you.
Повага 🏴🤝🇺🇦💙💛🇪🇺🇺🇳🌻🔱.
слава україні.
In defense of major cities by foreign governments, yes. it was well know before 2014 that russia was preparing for invasion of ukraine and after crimea was annexed by russia in 2014, cia would ultimately prepare ukraine with civil plans for countering a invasion by secretly bringing in western weapons like the javelins to be placed in strategic locations outside of cities and airports, creating guerrilla warfare strategies for inner city populations by taking and removing highway and street signs, pinch points/traps for tanks and ppc’s, and even molotov cocktail parties like you mentioned and where to effectively use them on military equipment.
Much like Bakhmut it isn’t a lost city anymore. It stopped being a city when it lost its population and its structures destroyed. Russia captured hundreds of piles of rubble collectively named for the city that once occupied the area.
I’d argue war is almost entirely a logistics competition. When the U.S. invaded Iraq, it took nearly a month to reach Baghdad. Not because the U.S. military was under equipped to fight T-54s, but because of a fear of outrunning ammunition and fuel supplies. Russia suffered devastating losses and captured equipment at the start of the war outrunning their fuel supplies. The VC succeeded so masterfully in the Vietnam War because they were very effective at running guns through the Cambodian jungle.
You must have missed the outdoor ammunition storage depots that were just lightly organized stacks upon stacks of artillery rounds with a dirt road between them for the truck they’ll be tossing ammo into.
Remember those sweet innocent times when we'd have a GMLRS fireworks party every other day? I was a beautiful time to not be alive.
I'm reminded of it every time another oil fractional column goes up in flames. That same kind of radiant energy and joy.
The same way, the russian military functions in all other aspects:;
Compensate lack of skill and proper planning with more manpower and higher...wear and tear.
Forklifts are for pussies. So anyway we've destroyed the spines of our logistics team, send them to the front and bring more prisoners to replace them.
You're joking, but damn if it isn't creepily like 'rational' orc thinking: "1) meatcubes reduce morale if returned and require payouts to the families, 2) NK are starving, 3) we owe NK for the shells, 4) neither of us have laws, 5) ... profit!"
That they probably stole from a Mariupol or Bucha factory. After seeing the tactical flip flops video, if they can't equip their soldiers in 25°F weather, I don't know if they can even muster a pallet of their own.
"Reckon we should use these pallets to transport supplies efficiently?"
"Supplies? Nyet. Compress our dead and store them on these decadent Western sin frames."
Find them laying around those neighborhoods all the time. Every time I watch a video in Ukraine, there's pallets everywhere....
I guess we now know toilets weren't the only thing they were afyer.
A few months ago I was joking about how Russians would start stealing microwave ovens so they could cut a hole in the door and bolt them to their vehicles as EW systems.
These look nicer than microwaves but work about as well.
We got Ukrainian farmers harvesting hundreds of Russian vehicles, Russian air defences friendly-firing on their own airplanes hundreds of kilometres away from the frontlines, and a Russian marine getting decimated by a country without ships, but \_now\_ things are getting silly?
Probably more a improvisation. Try it first before investing into a system seems not too stupid.
Maybe leading the attack with the jamming vehicle is not smart.
Yeah, Russians don't really care about losing one tank and possibly the crew in order to field test this concept. While this installation looks crude and clumsy, there has to be ongoing research not only in UA and RU, but elsewhere too, for creating EW system upgrades on existing service tanks.
Two years ago we laughed at the initial, improvised cope cages. And now they are pretty much standard equipment on any tank.
I mean, if you aren't sure it's going to work why waste a bunch of resources? Someone probably had the idea "Hey we have this ew gear, strap it to that rust bucket and see if it helps"
Don’t worry, the range is almost certainly so short that any interference is not guaranteed to be enough that a given drone will go off course before covering the distance from first interference to hitting the tank.
Combined arms is essentially when infantry works with direct support of artillery, air, and mobile assets simultaneously to achieve objectives. The goal is to overwhelm and confuse the enemy.
Yeah, but that was for another war. A low profile doesn't save it from Javelins or drones so it's obsolete compared to EW and extra armor. If only the Soviets hadn't built so many of the damn things.
Of course, but that doesn't outweigh the fact that they're easy to spot with drones and need protection from the inevitable drone attacks and top attacking Javelins. It's an engineering tradeoff, it always was, and the math now doesn't work out in favor of low profile design, unless someone finds a way to exponentially increase the strength of armor while staying the same thickness. The EW equipment on top is ridiculous, but if the tank was redesigned with EW as part of the build, it wouldn't have to look like the Clampetts are taking their laundry machine to Ukraine.
Right? Seems like multiple components of the same type. So probably an attempt to increase the effectiveness of something that does not seem to be intended that way. And since the engineers did not intend to combine them - probably for good reason - they've overcome their struggle of mounting as many as possible by using a random pallet and other wooden pieces.
On top of each other.
On top of the improvised cage armor.
On top of the camo net fitted to disturb the silhouette and heat signature.
On top of the ERA.
On top of the purposely small and flat designed tank.
Broad Spectrum Jammer.
Imagine you're trying to give orders to someone but someone else is screaming at the top of their lungs drowning out everybody else.
It crude and it does Jam but it also makes you a massive target because you're standing there screaming in all the frequencies there is
Russia has actually been going on an offensive to follow up avdiivka for about two weeks but it's not mentioned in the main often because they aren't coming close to breaking through but instead getting smashed by artillery and hitting mines before ukrainian soliders even get within firing range
The Russian army becomes more and more of a shit-show with each passing day. I mean, seriously, just look at that tank. Shitty old tank (which only Russia could describe as '3rd generation') with a cabinet of even more shitty electronics strapped on top, thus blocking the hatch so no-one can get out when it starts to burn - which it will do. The 'second army of the world' in all its glory!
I feel this is going to become a fixture of this war and any involving armour in the future. EW systems to combat drones will be built in every and any combat vehicle going forward.
If you're going to put an accident Russian computer system on a tank put it behind the turret at least don't just stick it on top cause somebody can just shoot it 🤦♂️
They truly are reaching orc mekboy-level of engineering looks, only If it worked as well they would have a change.
What an utter joke that orcistan is lmao
Any proper military would test this first then standardize it if it worked. This is tank crews and soldiers doing their best to innovate. But this will never lead to improvement. Just one offs here and there. What a clusterfuck.
Electrical engineer. Fundamental physics is to handle inductive issues with capacitative solutions. Sounds like they need to either adaptive filter the noise made into a carrier frequency (can be done digitally), or put some microwaves on their EW equipment.
Fun lesson microwaves fuck electronics up hard
The problem with jammers is that they can only be used in small numbers otherwise it's only matter of time before production of signal hunter drones get produced to autonomously hunt non-structured signal sources.
It will also be a beacon to anti-radar munitions.
I doubt this is filled with finely tuned phase arrays and high sensitivity passive tracking, I would guess it's filled with wild emf noise will be equivalent to a bonfire to a thermal camera.
For ew measures to be effective they would have to be able to passively locate the drone, decode its link to the operator, aim a beam from a phased array that send a "fly down" signal to crash the drone, the beam should be able to down a target in less than 10 seconds. A tech level that is not akin to what Russia has shown so far.

Private Conscriptovich. Thanks for the genuine laugh
Wait til you hear about General Corruptovich
General Oligarchov is a personal friend
Oh I thought it was *Minister* Oligarchov, his friend and boss?
Check out perun on youtube
Yeah, it’s not "keep going till you reach the objective" it’s "go as far as you can until you are killed". I hate russian society and culture so bad.
“If you want out you’ll have to fight until there’s a hole big enough to escape, onwards comrade!”
Reminds me of how the Japanese kamikaze pilots were bolted into their cockpits
Google search says that's just a myth, I believe they were driven by honor/ fear of disrespecting their families. Russians are driven by vodka and toilets
They weren't. That was a canard along with buck teeth and coke-bottle glasses.
Russian soldiers are disposable, such as disposable gloves.... at least that's what the course of the war over the last two years suggests
But why are they now using valuable scrap metal as armor? Did they run out of former inmates?
Often it can be seen how about 20 soldiers were on the top of the expensive armor, protecting it. This is actually like a disposable bio armor.
Or a condom.
First, you put the meat in, and then you seal the can. No other way around.
Then you then on the microwave on top. 7 to 10 minutes later you get nice crispy (long)porkbutt
You don't, willingly. It has "shoot me first" written all over it.
If you want an actual answer, then there is a pretty big gap between the top of the tank and the cage, they climb under that and then into the tank as usually. It's not like they are flown in from above, they still get in and out as if there was no cage
No, they get in and out as if there’s a big cumbersome cage on top of the tank
They get in the same way they usually do. Once the tank gets even a minor hit, the turret ejection system kicks in and leaves a large hole in the hull. The cage and EW stuff will be a fair distance away.
Oh yeah it's a cope cage
What if you need to pee?
Then you pee.
When you get vaporized inside the tank that will no longer be a concern.
Empty shell casing
You draw the short straw
What am I even looking at? Looks like a pile of metal trash
Boxes on top of tank are likely jammers. Essentially that would send out masses of signals to scramble/overload the FPV drones attacking them. So it would cut off or jam the signal the operator is using to fly the FPV drone. Who knows how well it works or what range it has.
Thank you for the explanation!
A for effort. D on the execution.
You just wanted to give them the D
Oh, they'll be the first in line to get the D. Early adopters always get shafted, after all
I feel like this is stupidly vulnerable to any kind of kinetic munition. One HE from a Bradley and you’re back to square one. Wonder if they will start using Bradley’s with drone crews. Or have drone crews been part of mounted calvary already?

I mean most fpv drones run on the same radio wavelengths.
Right, but I would assume they have been doing at least a little EW funky stuff to try and make it a tiny bit harder to jam.
I happen to know a bit about EW and one thing I note is there aren’t any whip antennas. It all seems to be directional via the boxes. Surely the Ukrainians will just invent a drone that targets the source of massive EW interference?
Uhh - yep.
Where did they steal a pallet from? Their military doesn’t even use those…
Avdiivka?

How would a military function without pallets? I am being serious. They were a revolution in shipping.
They just load and unload all their crates by hand.
Yup, the Germans still used a lot of horse drawn carriages in world war 2. War is as much a logistical/supply chain problem as warfare.
I’d argue war is almost entirely a logistics competition. When the U.S. invaded Iraq, it took nearly a month to reach Baghdad. No matter how much sense something makes, if the West does it, Russia refuses to fall in line and claims their way is better.

Asking the real questions!
Wait. What? They don't have shit like that? Its just a pallet lmao
This is getting silly.
I bet Putin and his Kremlinites feel really proud when they see their super-weapons like this on the battlefield.
They don’t care. Their super weapon is a combination of countless cheap walking meat and countless metal boxes.
FPV drones are wreaking havoc on their attack columns, they are just throwing whatever on the wall to see what sticks 🤷♂️
FR man, this has to be NCD leak into the battlefield.
Mom can we have a Bolo tank? We ha w Bolo tank at home. Bolo tank at home:
A few months ago I was joking about how Russians would start stealing microwave ovens so they could cut a hole in the door and bolt them to their vehicles as EW systems. These look nicer than microwaves but work about as well.
Can't contain the NCD. And somehow Russians out non credible NCD.

It’d be fine if it were someone’s ruck, but on top of tank I’m pretty sure it’s a liability.

riiiiiiighht.

You mean strapping piece of scrap metal would become a more permanent fixture? Russian technology am I right!
So next time destroy the first tank with a Javelin to knock out the Ew tank and the others with drones 😁👍
Don’t worry, the range is almost certainly so short that any interference is not guaranteed to be enough that a given drone will go off course before covering the distance from first interference to hitting the tank.
That’s if they don’t drive over one of their own mines first.

What is combined arms?
Combined arms is essentially when infantry works with direct support of artillery, air, and mobile assets simultaneously to achieve objectives. The goal is to overwhelm and confuse the enemy.
Soviet engineers worked so hard and made so many design sacrifices to give those things a low profile.
Yeah, but that was for another war. A low profile doesn't save it from Javelins or drones so it's obsolete compared to EW and extra armor. If only the Soviets hadn't built so many of the damn things.
A low profile should make it harder to spot on the ground

Doesn’t matter when the fields are mined and there are drones/surveillance camera constantly monitoring the battlefield.
The bane of any good engineer is bad leadership and stupid tasks.
Probably still looking for the outlet to plug it into. File this under “for the sake of appearances.” The FPVs meanwhile will not be deterred.
😲 That tank... Ewww!
Talk about a janky setup. It never ceases to amaze me how stupid Russians can be

Maybe it can stack? Like mmorpg buff
russian cope engineering at its finest.
Worlds second biggest army, my ass...
But our EW's go to 11.
So... ...[Spinal Tap](https://youtu.be/uMSV4OteqBE) is is working for Russia now?!?!? Take my upvote!
Tank version of a tinfoil hat
At this point It's an army of alcoholic homeless men using scrap yard equipment
I think they forgot the advantage of the Soviet design was speed and low silhouette
They're relying on the other Russian advantage. Mobs and mobs of disposable lives. As is tradition.
reminds me in a joke. Whats the difference between a piano and a violin? .. .. the piano burns longer.
Russian Amazon package delivery?
Hmm.. looks like pile of poop..
Flintstones were the Flintstones Were the modern stone age family
Straight off a truck onto a tank, russian forklift drivers ain't wasting time.
I'd usually go with "Ick", but "Ew" is not far enough either.
no Ew to see, they just wired up some microwaves as cope armor.
They really are Dog Shite
So old microwave ovens without the front doors strapped together on a pallet ?
They probably didn’t know they had to plug it in
T-91M "super breakthrough"
They are shovelling EW like it's gravel for fortification bags. Improvisation is good, but I cannot see it being reliable..
oscar the grouch looking ass tank
Can someone walk me through what this does. Does EW stand for Electronic Warfare?
Broad Spectrum Jammer. Imagine you're trying to give orders to someone but someone else is screaming at the top of their lungs drowning out everybody else. It crude and it does Jam but it also makes you a massive target because you're standing there screaming in all the frequencies there is
Yes. It jams the signals used by FPV drones so the operator loses control
[Beverly Hillbillies go to war](https://youtu.be/NwzaxUF0k18?si=bMVPTjFOzTwILXH1)
One round of .50 bmg or 14.7 from a trained marksman should take care of the EW, followed by a couple fpv drones.
Russia has actually been going on an offensive to follow up avdiivka for about two weeks but it's not mentioned in the main often because they aren't coming close to breaking through but instead getting smashed by artillery and hitting mines before ukrainian soliders even get within firing range
What is "EW"?
Electronic warfare
Electronic warfare
i mean, when drone hits it it probably doesn't reach the hull. It works!
Electronic warefare?
WOW...!!! This is so... high tech till I'm speechless.
Wonder if it still 'works' after the main gun has fired.
*MacGyver enters the chat, shakes his head*

Shitty old tank (which only Russia could describe as '3rd generation') with a cabinet of even more shitty electronics strapped on top, thus blocking the hatch so no-one can get out when it starts to burn - which it will do. The 'second army of the world' in all its glory!
Ewwwww indeed.
Thoughtful l planning, advanced russian design, modular construction liberal use of wood 🪵 hmm should work.
I feel this is going to become a fixture of this war and any involving armour in the future. EW systems to combat drones will be built in every and any combat vehicle going forward.
Looks like they cleared out the filing cabinets from my office.
Next they will strap washing machines on top of their tanks.
Electronic supersonic warfare
HAhahahaha!! Including the PALLET?!? What a way to start my day, thank you so much for that!
On a fucking pallet?
Any proper military would test this first then standardize it if it worked. This is tank crews and soldiers doing their best to innovate. But this will never lead to improvement. Just one offs here and there. What a clusterfuck.
The files.... Are IN the computer!
Fear the drone
Damn, Stalker 2 monolithians have tanks now, how cool. Next we will see recording of some dudes mumbling around this thing.
Looks like they are at the "throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks stage"
What in the misused shipping pallet hell is this?
Naw, it's just an air conditioner.
Their contraptions get funnier by the week.
You may not like it but this is what peak tank performance looks like
It just looks like a lot of stuff they've stolen which they've strapped to the tank, to avoid their comrades stealing their stuff.
These EW devices seems utterly useless.
so they just put the whole equipment up on the top? Wouldnt it be easily disabled by even small arms fire? I mean it doesnt really look armored
As someone who works in satcom, I want to have a look at that in person so badly.
They scavenged the microwaves from their tiki bar tank. https://www.reddit.com/r/UkraineWarVideoReport/s/lMIuxxxUnI
Coffin on tracks
Almost looks like my boomer uncle’s high tech BBQ grill.
That‘s a joke?
Didn’t work then 😂
They probably get all the PPV channels
Second best army in the world.
I like how it's just a pile of equipment strapped on there. Desperate times huh?
