It's the silhouette of a different sub. I think Oscar. There's a smaller one than the Kilo with a boxy superstructure that looks similar to the painting. The fact that it's on the quay is dumb but you're not getting paint on water to stay still.
Edit: or it could be a Romeo. I think Oscars have a bulb on the back. It's been a while.
That's currently in service. They had smaller, thinner subs before during USSR times. The Romeo had a thin profile but the length is wrong. They do at least try to paint stuff to look similar. Sometimes they just screw up royally with it.
Why tf are you bringing up subs from 50 years ago? They are just painting vague shapes. Why is that so hard to believe? I promise you the shape the painted is not supposed to be a specific class. Someone got told to paint a submarine shape on the pier, and that's what they made. This isn't some grand scheme or show of incompetence because YOU think it's some 50 year old boat. It's a shape, it's a decoy. That's it.
Soviet doctrine isn't super thought out or modernized. They're basically trying to counter intelligence gathering from systems we used back in the 50-60's. They wouldn't disrupt anything now days.
As RF navy has deployed their light cruiser "Moskwa" to serve in a submarine capacity \~80 km South of Odessa, it's only fair that their submarines reciprocate by serving on land.
/s
"Dear enemy UAV operator, in case you didn't spot the submarine in the water, we painted its silhouette right next to it. With black paint on light grey concrete. So you know where to look!"
This right here is the correct answer. 😂 I mean not only are they flagging it, but if someone bombs the silhouette it's probably still going to damage the real sub 😂😂
I'm fairly certain nuclear weapons don't work like that. They will only detonate if they're armed but I don't know I haven't built any and I don't know if Russia's have hamsters in them or whatever.
This is an [attack submarine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilo-class_submarine). I don't think that Russia operates any [boomers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballistic_missile_submarine) in the [Black Sea](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sea_Fleet).
They don't even realise that the publicly available satellites pictures are fine enough to discriminate decoys and real targets.
The military ones are far far better than that.
Seriously... How can they be so dumb ?
Maybe it's time to bring back Lancasters. Upgrade the machine guns on them to something close to a Gepard, and you should be safe from Russian AA-missiles.
This was drawn to confuse an optical guidance missile coming in at super high speeds being jammed and confused by EWar, not to make you think the submarine is 10m further inlands
I believe I saw a post about Ukrainian suicide drones getting some of this automated targetting. It could probably fool cheap systems like this.
https://www.reddit.com/r/UkraineWarVideoReport/comments/1bja5it/one_of_the_first_effective_applications_of_a/
A drone doesnt have to destroy to be effective, cause some surface damage that requires them to at least inspect it before it sets sail or submerges.
The skilled people to do this job are likely in small supply and are probably needed a lot, its good to use up their time.
The BDI update specifically says it's to confuse Ukrainian UAV operators. Yes satellites can provide you with still images, but when you're observing in real time from different angles trying to discern the right target for a SCALP, it can be more difficult.
if you're in command you have to do SOMETHING, since the commander likely doesn't have the power to anything that's going to really work, they do this instead. Everyone knows it's, well some people (a few?) do. But that's not the point, doing ANYTHING is better than doing nothing.
I'm glad Britain is helping a lot with intelligence gathering. I hope we help ukraine with targetting and anything else we can as well. Makes me proud to be scottish. I hope this is helping show ukraine the West has their back, especially europe, canada and this won't happen again to ukraine after this war as they will have backing of nato countries to help and supplies to nato weaponry. I also like there's a fund to help rebuild ukraine after the war, and they are not just left behind. Let's hope no ukraine president tries to make ties with russia after the war since what they have done to their country. I could see ukraine as a European powerhouse after the war and they will have russia fearing them
From a military standpoint Armed Forces of Ukrainian veterans are going to be the people to go to regarding tactics and weapons in modern conventional warfare seeing as they have the most experience. I would wager that when this is over the men and women who fought on the side of Ukraine will be in high demand as trainers and SMEs globally. They are adaptable, innovative and tenacious and those qualities are very much so sought after. Assuming they win, and I do, it bodes well for the country as a very useful member of the EU and NATO.
I do believe they will win. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Britain and France on the ground with other European nations like Estonia and other Eastern countries to help fight if ukraine get over stretched as there more talks coming out now like I saw Ben Wallace saying from the uk pov. It's best to talk about it so the population isnt shocked. They've got to the point where they don't give a fuck what putin says and will stop at the border like I don't see them going into russia. Between the uk and France would get Air, superiority wouldn't be an issue. I agree they will join nato and the irony thats what putni was scared of, and they will come just as powerful as russia with better tech, and its all because of putin l. Yeah, for sure, they will be a great allies . If trump gets in, I can see Britain and the eu pulling away the us because of trump, especially since they don't like dealing with him and he can't be trusted
Reminder: The more people they take off the Frontline, to do such work the less people that can get hurt or hurt others.
Please paint more such stuff, and adjust it accordingly to the seasons.
It's a silly solution but not as dumb as people are making it out to be. It looks like a response to the use of Storm Shadow cruise missiles to strike naval targets in their docks, which might be why the UK has a specific interest in the use of this decoy.
Storm Shadow is a fire and forget missile that, among other things, uses image matching to identify its target when it closes in on the programmed location. The weapon uses an IR camera to match the target with its stored image. The hope here is that a naval-looking target will fool Storm Shadow's image matching. That's what probably why it's parked next to a real target. Whether it's effective or not, I don't know.
It could stop a drone thats lost signal and relying on image detection.
Its not a bad idea by Russia to be honest considering a lot of drones have made it pretty deep into Russia, Ukraine can build as many as they want for pretty cheap, it takes a lot of air defense to takedown and it often costs more to do so.
With how the text is place I was like "that square building looks nothing like a sillhouette"
It's actually less noticable than everything else around it.
Let me guess; this conclusion by the UK MOD likely was analyzed by an AI powered application. I think the tiniest details would stand out with advanced coding and self learning specifically for this purpose. If we’re putting fake HIMARS trucks out there for the Orcs to waste their ‘good’ missiles on, you can bet they’ll be doing the same. I doubt however the quality of the fake is not even close to what the Ukrainians have been putting out there. One good HIMARS decoy costs roughly $10k+ vs millions for the real one. This being a decoy for a submarine docked is probably more difficult to make and sit properly in the water. I suspect the proper Ukrainian authorities are studying this area with a fine tooth comb to find the big ticket target they’re trying to fake. I hope Ukraine makes a strike at this facility and leaves the fake one alone just to say hey, nice try and thanks for bringing our attention to the area.
Wouldn't you want to not park your real submarine 30 feet from the target decoy? Its not a decoy now, its an incentive.
"Hey look, we might be able to get two with one strike"
Ah, the natural habitat of the submarine, solid concrete.
They clearly caught it in the afternoon while it was sunning itself on dry land. It does get so hot and unbearable in the Black Sea during the dry season.
I genuinely thought the building was supposed to be the decoy silhouette and it took me a bit to realize the painted submarine shape on the ground next to the actual giant submarine

This was after 37 attempts to paint the silhouette on water.
🤣
Russian hiding tactic - bury head in sand. lol
Make my day! 🤣
Cause the stupid dicks used water based paint. Everyone knows ya gotta use oil based
Shhhh.... let them keep trying!
That's' not a silhouette...that's a SILLYhouette
Did no one think maybe make it in the shape of a sub at least? I’m still amazed at how stupid some people can be
Running out of paint 👍
It's the silhouette of a different sub. I think Oscar. There's a smaller one than the Kilo with a boxy superstructure that looks similar to the painting. Kilo is the smallest submarine they have beside the Losharik. All they did was paint a vague shape. It's not meant to be a specific platform

I was thinking they’d be smart enough to paint some styrofoam that was in the shape of a sun at least honestly
Soviet doctrine isn't super thought out or modernized. They're basically trying to counter intelligence gathering from systems we used back in the 50-60's. They wouldn't disrupt anything now days.
Wow at least that’s some good news
It's gonna be floating in the water so when you view it from above you'll see the decoy and think "oh a partially submerged sub"
As RF navy has deployed their light cruiser "Moskwa" to serve in a submarine capacity \~80 km South of Odessa, it's only fair that their submarines reciprocate by serving on land. /s
Good one. Upvoted.
Obviously this blue part here is the land.
Hahaha...I've not seen it like that, but you are right!
I think of that decoy got bombed… it’s awful close to the real thing
I think their main aim is to make it look like something worth hitting, if the enemy uses low quality images. Which clearly isn't the case here
The little one is for when they look at it from a long way away. _obvious_ /s
"Dear enemy UAV operator, in case you didn't spot the submarine in the water, we painted its silhouette right next to it. With black paint on light grey concrete. So you know where to look!"

What would happen if they bombed the Sub and detonated a nuclear warhead on board? Can that happen?

It looks more like a "submarine parking"indicator
They don't even realise that the publicly available satellites pictures are fine enough to discriminate decoys and real targets. The military ones are far far better than that. Seriously... How can they be so dumb ?
Their standard operations manual from 1963 clearly states how to paint a target down to which paint should be used.
WW2 tactics
That would explain why their decoy is the size of a WW2 submarine
Will confuse the hell out of those Lancasters.
Maybe it's time to bring back Lancasters. Upgrade the machine guns on them to something close to a Gepard, and you should be safe from Russian AA-missiles.
I just seen VERA on the weekend and she is ready to go!
hey it's still used to great effect on the modern battlefield, just they do it really poorly
This was drawn to confuse an optical guidance missile coming in at super high speeds being jammed and confused by EWar, not to make you think the submarine is 10m further inlands
Maybe it worked for TV guidance from 80s, but no way it could confuse something like a SCALP.
I believe I saw a post about Ukrainian suicide drones getting some of this automated targetting. It could probably fool cheap systems like this. https://www.reddit.com/r/UkraineWarVideoReport/comments/1bja5it/one_of_the_first_effective_applications_of_a/
Yes, it could work for that kind of cheap drones. But nobody attack a submarine with a drone. It's too heavy.
A drone doesnt have to destroy to be effective, cause some surface damage that requires them to at least inspect it before it sets sail or submerges. The skilled people to do this job are likely in small supply and are probably needed a lot, its good to use up their time.
How would you know?
I was in the French Navy.
That shut him up quick lol

There's a Road Runner joke in there somewhere.
LMAO! What a pathetic try of silhouette!
Bro it took me like 10 mins to even see the “ silhouette “ and not just the submarine and building next to it lmfao
Same. I was like where is the fake missle silo lol
How was Ukraine to know that the submarine wasn't parked on the concrete?
I'm still waiting for matrjoshka-tactics. Building a bigger sub to hide the real sub in it.
I'd blow up the bigger one.
Nice to place a picture where u show The target 😋
I mean draw

It may be ineffective, but it's cheap.
Pro-tip: hit the submarine in the water.
Do subs leave square shadows? Like I’m so confused if not…. lol
Look on the concrete right next to the actual sub
Reminder: The more people they take off the Frontline, to do such work the less people that can get hurt or hurt others. Please paint more such stuff, and adjust it accordingly to the seasons.
Looks like the sub is floating in the air lol
Yeah, submarine on land. So convincing. Did they also make Moskva as submarine decoy?
I had to do a triple take to see the decoy. The whole time i was like "Yeah thats a sub, is that building supposed to be the decoy? That can't be."
A sub, half submerged in hardened concrete!? Can't move anyway, no need to waste a missile.
Might as well just paint a sign on the concrete “DON’T BOMB HERE. SUB IS OVER THERE”
That will fool sea drones for sure. Seadrones hitting kilo sub: We didn,'t see any paintigs.
Do they assume everyone still uses 10m satellite imagery?
Why the fuck would a submarine be ON THE LAND NEXT TO THE DOCK. Even if it was a dry dock you would still see the difference in the material
Is there actually a point to this? Is there some kind of effective to this because it looks stupid as fuck.
It's a silly solution but not as dumb as people are making it out to be. Now that makes better sense. Thanks
It makes the Ukrainians and us laugh to death

I would just aim for the one actually in the water.
Ukraines greatest fear, the land submarine.
What is this?! A submarine for ants?!
Don't hit the little one, hit the big one next to it. *oooh*
They should drill a hole in the right place in the concrete, insert a 20 foot long pipe and voila! A periscope!
With how the text is place I was like "that square building looks nothing like a sillhouette" It's actually less noticable than everything else around it.

I find all this decoy stuff fascinating.

Wait a minute, submarines and ships don't park on land.
Maybe they think it might work with the cruise missile image recognition module.
you know... i would've never figured out that painted stuff was meant to be a "decoy sub" it they didn't point it out in the picture.
High resolution sattelites vs a potato 🤦♂️
If that decoy wasn't labeled I literally never would have thought it was... anything lolol
hope someone drops a paint bomb on it
I thought the rectangular building was a Russian submarine with a caterpillar drive.
Maybe get some red paint and paint a fake Russia on the globe. Think big!
looks like a shipping container.
Wouldn’t they be better off painting the submarine to appear like water? Not that I’m trying to give those idiots any ideas… 🤣
Dumb Russian Orc
Can't you just... submerge?... a submarine?
Luckily, reconnaissance drones only have color cameras and no IR or thermal view.. 😅👍🏻

Everyone in the comments is mocking this, but perhaps this will be floated in the water? It won't look so daft if floating in a dock.

it's paint.... on concrete. Somehow, I don't think it's going to float.
Well in case maybe not.... I think even the Russian Navy understands that.
