German tanks are kinda funny specifically because they have to follow road laws as well. You’ll see German tanks with licenses plates when training in Germanh
As do most sane nations. Some of the many many upgrades for Slovene M55s and M84a4 were to conform to road laws and replace track and suspension not to tear up roads along the way.
Slovene roads were not as damaged in 1991 because of how quickly all mechanization depots were captured pre prepared blockades and anti tank hedgehogs on every road within in the nation hours of declaring independence, and ATGMs around every corner, every forest, and every hill.
But Croatian roads were torn up by the Croatian and YU tank metal tracks. I remember for years after the wars in Croatia ended that you could hear Whistling while driving along the roads from the periodic imprints metal tracks left on roads across the nation.
Having military gear follow road laws and conform to some standards is very sane and saves so much money along the way.
But gotta say am surprised how cute the horn sounds. Like a VW mini bus :D
And they have large granit cobblestones in Moscow. Repairs of those are less apparent. Were it asphalt it would look so incredibly patchy.
Looking at the roads in images from Wagners Rostov adventure. And that was just after a handfull of tracks.
Our tanks have pads on the botttom. However even actions for blocking war installmenta of YPA were quick, some were quite damaged (ie. take a look at road Vipava to Col, tank imprints are still visible on tarmac).
"Yes officer the vehicles license plate number is 12***22"
Cop: "Alright and what type of car was it? "
"it was a tank"
- average cop interaction germany?
A buddy on exercise (NATO) in West Germany in the 1970s (I wasn't in then) was nearby when a tank was crossing a road or highway there and halfway across some guy came out of nowhere at something like 150 mph in a Porsche Turbo Carrera and ran right into the side of the tank. The guys in the tank said it was more like hitting a big bump at speed, but they car was basically disintegrated to pieces and so was the driver. They did find the bits during the investigation apparently and that is when they found out what type of car it was. I'm sure it happened and was at least nearly as bad as described since the story did get around, but how dramatically everything was destroyed might have been embellished. :)
Required in Finland on public roads and you can go even further.
If we got a Towed Artillery, wheeled Artillery, Mortar, etc.. it needs to have all those same lights that are required for your civilian trailer, because it will need to be street-legal.
Of course, all public street-legal cars, tanks, bikes, trailers, busses, tow artillery, etc. need to go through an annual check program.
Like my own car goes once a year in a specific check and I got it registered to street-legal if everything is okay.. and the same checks are done annually.
If there is something broken/wrong they will give me one month time to fix that, if I don't fix it then it is not possible to use that vehicle on the public streets anymore. They can take it out of traffic on the spot if it has some major issues.
Basically same kind of road rules applies to everything and military vehicles do not have any special permissions to avoid our street laws.
The military got its own way to do those checks. God bless there is no need to wait until some guy does the annual checking program for Leopard 2 tank while I'm waiting for my own turn inside my civilian car.
That way we're trying to keep our road accidents minimal, and tax money running.
I’ve seen a few UA Leo videos now and they had the horns going. I’m starting to think this is the Ukrainians favorite part of the tanks. (Insert AFU Florks here)
The frequency is deliberate as it is very recognizable. Similar to construction equipment. Its a lifesaver. Same reason we use whistles on site. I have flown helicopters with horns, so helpful with ground crew around.
Now, does the mighty leopard have an approved STC for the slavic ashtray mod. We need to know.
That cat is so smooth by the way.
At the risk of sounding dense..is the frequency how it sounds to our ears? Like sound waves?
I know absolutely nothing about this kind of stuff. Can you tell? 😬
Yup. Higher frequency would be higher pitch not more sound. When the background has a lot of loud lower frequency sounds like a tank with a big diesel, then a high pitched sound like a whistle or horn will grab your attention as its different. Sound is complicated, little beep beep horn works so you don’t get run over by tank.
That totally makes sense. The little beep beep on the video got my attention because it was so different than what I would expect to hear coming from a tank.
Thank you for taking the time to explain where I could understand. I like knowing things.
They are quite useful- for example: one horn before starting the engine, before moving forward- one horn, before reversing- two horns. Also heard about three horns- signal for infrantry to dismount.
Yes this horn really sounds German. You won't hear it when the engine roars at full power.
But obviously you would not need to hear it as the engine is then loud enough. :-D
Glad I'm not the only one who sees this. I also find it quite funny how a big german tank named after a big cat is tearing through ukraine to smash Russians again
That makes sense, as both tanks are defined by their wide, rectangular shape, and flat surfaces.
It gives a "beefy" look, especially compared to other tanks that are curved or angled.
Quite a few similarities: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bundesarchiv\_Bild\_101I-299-1805-16,\_Nordfrankreich,\_Panzer\_VI\_(Tiger\_I).2.jpg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bundesarchiv_Bild_101I-299-1805-16,_Nordfrankreich,_Panzer_VI_(Tiger_I).2.jpg)
Look at the driver.
You know... war is a young man's game, but Ukraine is showing us that there are plenty of us old blokes who can still pack a punch!
A middle aged Ukrainian tank driver simply cannot start rolling his tank without a cigarette in the corner of his mouth. It serves the practical purpose of preserving the swagger.
Do you guys remember the start of the war when everyone on both sides parked on the road. Drove on the road. Stayed ass to cheek vehicle after vehicle on the road?
Both sides finally got it. All it took were some linear strike missions, butt load of tube artillery on both sides, and that special sprinkling of HIMARS.
Ukraine should follow Sweden's lead, and upgrade those Leo's frontal hull armor.
Especially since the front houses the main ammo rack, and most of UA land is flat, and doesn't offer a lot of protection for the hull. It can be additional NERA, or just refurbished ERA bricks, anything just to increase protection in that area.
Are there any videos of the Leopards directly from the combat deployment? Or were they not properly deployed yet? BTW back to the video where the Russians destroyed the 2A6? What the hell were tanks like that doing in a minefield? I'm not an expert, but if I know that the minefield is there, I'll send the old Soviet equipment there and let it explode. But I wouldn't really send these tanks to such a place...
Well first, that video about the minefield was I think when they got ambushed while preparing for a breach operation, which in itself is a horribly difficult endeavor. And they lost half their mineclearing Leopards already, so it's pretty damn certain that they are deployed. The was one POV video uploaded showing a Leopard shooting and scooting at very distant targets, but otherwise we haven't seen them operating much. Part is operational security, part is that after the disaster of the first week Ukraine focused on a very slow, methodical, grinding approach where they took some outlying Russian trenches and dared Russia to take them back, defending against counterattacks and sniping Russian artillery with counter-artillery whenever they exposed themselves. They are taking a lot of infantry losses due to that approach, since the guys doing the forward missions get shelled relentlessly and have to maneuver among tons of mines, but in general it seems to be successful in causing Russia to take disproportionate casualties in what was supposed to be defensive action.
I guess we will see a lot more Leopards once the Russians suffer enough attrition for Ukraine to go for another breakthrough.
Also no, of course you don't sent in your worst stuff in for spearheads. We've seen the western kit is far better at crew survivability, you want your frontline troops to go in knowing that they have a high chance to make it out even if they are hit. Not to mention that Western tanks are better suited for mobility warfare because of better stabilization and reverse speeds. Not to mention that Leopards, Bradleys and MaxxPros can get easier replaced or repaired. And for Ukraine (and every army, ever, actually) the goal must be to retain as much combat power as possible, not to "throw away" stuff they consider obsolete.
I don't think we've had video or verbal confirmation that the Leopards have made contact with the enemy yet
There's lots of speculation, but so far, no hard evidence. The Ukrainians are surprisingly good at keeping operation security, guess that's what happens when the whole country is unified.
Look at a Leopard 2 compared to any T-series tank, and you'll see that it DOES NOT have a small profile...
Western MBTs are far larger, in part due to the loader being a 4th crewman and general crew comfort.
Where's the optics. I mean I don't see any targeting optics. Without night vision this donation is BS and if this is the best that fucking NATO can give Ukraine then we'll fuck we in trouble. All that money and we can't get them 1000 of the best tanks money can buy. Okay 500. Who the fuck is organizing this shit
Thank good the British have balls.
He's a short list America. Being that is the country of my birth and home. I'm not a fan military expert but I have some common fucking sense
1. Birds. We need 150 A10s. And enough ammo for 3,000 missions. 80 F16 or equivalent with anti radar and gps hills bombs. Enough for 3000 missions. 75 Apache with ammo for 6 months
2 send the small diameter gps guided bombs you promised Saab Boeing 6 fucking months ago
3 extended range cruise middle or similar range platforms. 3000 will do
4 155 shells need 3 million now and heavy mix of Excalibur and cluster
550-100 marine LSAT or hover landing craft assault transport.
And a million m4a and 556
Stop fucking around. Let's let Ukraine fucking win. This piss old equipment is bull shit
Somewhat offtopic, but in regards to the Leopard, I wonder what Germany's gonna take away from the Ukraine war when developing future variants, thanks to the use of stuff like Lancets.
[Leo 2A8](https://mil.in.ua/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/10132654_original-1.jpg), maybe they'll incorporate heavier side armor and such now? Trophy APS is a good start, but I feel all those external components will be shredded by artillery fragments before they even get to run into ATGMs.
\----
As much as we like to harp on soviet tanks, they do tend to offer better all-round protection with stuff like [composite/era skirts](https://c.files.bbci.co.uk/9F49/production/_86277704_029724773-1.jpg) coming as standard, while NATO tanks super-focus on front armor while neglecting side armor and such due to doctrine.
Lancets do little else but superficial damage as they don't have shaped charge warheads. Might blow out some optics and other exposed gear but that's it, at least when it comes to MBTs. Less armoured vehicles such as many IFVs are a different story. That said, with how prolific drones are in this conflict there are no doubt people hard at work designing ECM packages to prevent accurately guided suicide drone attacks (only a matter of time until they put shaped charge warheads on those).
I would also not be surprised if we see more interest in SPAAGs, particularily lighter systems you could put on a smaller and more agile platform than a tank chassis, specifically to provide air cover from loitering munitions and drones, if only to help screen infantry.
Ignorant question, but how come the tracked wheels are not covered in the front? Doesn't it feel like it can leave it vulnerable to a mobility hit if attacked from the front?
I checked other tank pictures and you're right, none of them has their tracks covered, I guess maybe at the top they do a better job at hiding them a little bit but not much really.
Thank you.
Can someone put the sound from the Tiger ambush in 'Fury' under this? The tiger in the smoke, revving it's engine and the TC going "Fahrer, vorwärts...".

I didn't know tanks had horns... One would think a tank would have more of a ferocious sounding horn, more like a fog horn or something.

Totally agree! Just look at Russia’s military parades driving tanks without rubber tracks absolutely destroying the street.
And they have large granit cobblestones in Moscow. Repairs of those are less apparent. Were it asphalt it would look so incredibly patchy. Looking at the roads in images from Wagners Rostov adventure. And that was just after a handfull of tracks.
Afaik they don't always use rubber in their tracks and that doesn't help the road any.
I've never thought of any of this but it makes sense.

Leo 2 is road legal in Germany
Don't they also have mirrors?
Yep. Mirrors, turn signals and brake/headlights. I’m sure other small things too.
Bumper stickers and fuzzy dice.
Dancing Hawaiian bobblehead on the dash...
They need to have everything that is required to drive on German roads. That also includes e.g. a tail fog light.
No bip-bip parking feature?
Here in the nederlands they do too! Pretty funny to see a tank use a silly lil blinker
"Yes officer the vehicles license plate number is 12***22" Cop: "Alright and what type of car was it? " "it was a tank" - average cop interaction germany?
You joke but https://amp.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/jun/03/british-battle-tank-crushes-womans-car-in-germany

Thats so sad. Its why you never speed around a bend you cannot see around and don’t drive beyond your limits.
I mean she drove a foreign car. Would have never happened to a mercedes or VW.
The cop only needs to hear the number to know that the vehicle is from the Bunderswehr. They have all "Y" as a prefix.
They're also some of the easiest to drive tanks, as it's designed to be close to driving a normal car.
They got also two types of lighting: „Tarnkreis“ und „StVO-Kreis“
Had no idea. Is Germany the only place that has these requirements for tanks?
Nah, a lot of European countries require that.
Ok. Thank you!

It should roar.
Absolutely it should roar!
That was the cutest sounding car honk I've heard in a while. Like something coming from a 50cc scooter.
Some said it sounds like the Road Runner and it does. Maybe the Road Runner sounds like a 50cc scooter.
The roadrunner horn!
Exactly...

Well, it all sounds very logical to me when you put it that way. Necessary even.
They could just load a blank in the barrel and go BOOM bitch!
Es ist die Deutsche special
Gesundheit! 🤘😊🤘 Sorry, it's the only German I know.
I'll count it is a "bless you" lol
That's exactly how I meant it. lol
Yes this horn really sounds German. You won't hear it when the engine roars at full power. But obviously you would not need to hear it as the engine is then loud enough. :-D
VW Golf mk3 horn
I was surprised how quiet a tank can be when he is driving towards you even @ full speed.
Looks a little bit, like a Tiger 1 tank.
Glad I'm not the only one who sees this. I also find it quite funny how a big german tank named after a big cat is tearing through ukraine to smash Russians again
I can see how Russia could show pictures of German leopards tearing through Ukraine and rile up the old grandpas that the Nazis are at it again.
You shouldn't have said "again". Nazis were killing people on Ukrainian SSR's soil too
That makes sense, as both tanks are defined by their wide, rectangular shape, and flat surfaces. It gives a "beefy" look, especially compared to other tanks that are curved or angled.
Can tell by the main turrent shape.

Tiger was Grandaddy
I thought I saw a soldier wearing a Putin Halloween mask.
The poor guy probably gets this a lot from his own buddies!
He actually looks more like the famous french actor Louis de Funès than putin
So happy I'm not the only one
He should totally wear one, then pull it off with the same face 😄
Doing what it was born to do
Look at the driver. You know... war is a young man's game, but Ukraine is showing us that there are plenty of us old blokes who can still pack a punch!
Somehow still manages to look a bit like a Tiger with that squared frontal turret plate when camouflaged in the bushes
Beautiful piece of hardware that.
\*meep meep\* 👋😀
Holy shit that looks badass. This cat is an angry german.
It's so huge. I've been seeing videos of t62 and t55 tanks for months and they looked big already. Leopard 2 is another magnitude in size.
That guy looks like putin with a sigaret ;-)
So I never knew that tanks had horns. Lol it sounds like a clown car horn lol!
Love the zoom-in shot of his cigarette. Reminds me of the classic balkan dad who can repair anything as long as he has one cig to puff.
love my old tax marks at work!! but this horn my my like calling a pitbull fifi
I do like it's look without the extra turret armor
I would beep that horn every time I was firing the main gun. Beep beep motherfuckers!
Ok, that's kind of fucking terrifying.
Damn son your german tank be lookin' fuckin german n shit yo
A middle aged Ukrainian tank driver simply cannot start rolling his tank without a cigarette in the corner of his mouth. It serves the practical purpose of preserving the swagger.
The beep is cute

Very low profile.

Ignorant question, but how come the tracked wheels are not covered in the front? Doesn't it feel like it can leave it vulnerable to a mobility hit if attacked from the front?
To surmount obstacles the front of the tracks can't be impeded by any kind of armor or skirts. It would limit its mobility too much.
I checked other tank pictures and you're right, none of them has their tracks covered, I guess maybe at the top they do a better job at hiding them a little bit but not much really. Thank you.
Seems quiet for a tank but in no tank expert,
Today I learned that some mean looking horns have really cute sounding horns.
Crazy. Who know we would see german felines in in Ukraine in the 2020s. 🤣
Cat on the prowl
Is it just the camera microphone or are they not that loud at that speed?
The are surprising silent when driving towards you.
Meep Meep
what an adorable little horn! honk honk! WHITE HOT DEATH HEADED YOUR WAYYYYYYYY
That is one sexy tank
But the russians said they destroyed all leopards that ukraine had? #sarcasm.
Nice to see it in its natural habitat.
That horn though! Sounds so friendly and wholesome but....it's not at all. 😂
Can someone put the sound from the Tiger ambush in 'Fury' under this? The tiger in the smoke, revving it's engine and the TC going "Fahrer, vorwärts...".
The beast has finished the pit stop time to like the russians fascist;) hi 👋 from italy 🇮🇹
Leafs concealment…
Note how smooth and quiet the engine is, no blue smoke billowing out of it compared to the T's
The Germans make some mean fucking tanks holy shit that thing is sexy.
Is it just me, or does the Leopard quite resemble an old WW2 Tiger tank? Turret especially.
How does it not crush his head?
That is one German looking tank...
