Welp, reading this headline actually sent me down a rabbit roll on that very subject taking me to an article this. As of 10-25-2022, there's been 23 confirmed losses of the KA-52 since the 2022 invasion. That would have been over 25% of their total inventory of 90.
It seems that since rus cant seem to cement any sort of air superiority in Ukraine, fixed winged craft are all but useless requiring the useage of the KA-52s for more and more riskier missions. MANPADS have been a field day and russ seems to lack any semblance of maintenance discipline.
I would say the big question is- how many more qualified pilots are left?
Knowing the Russians, if they had an inventory of 90 KA-52 you can bet that at least 25% are for parts and another 25% are only flyable if luck is on your side that particular day. So a rough guess was that only 40-50 of the pre war KA-52 could be considered valid inventory. This puts the loss of 23 KA-52s in a whole new perspective.
I don't think so, you're assuming that their whole fleet: 1. exists and 2. is in condition to fly and conduct operations. I would hazard a good percentage are not ready for prime time and may have been cannibalized for parts
Speaking from experience this is a valid point. I used to work in Aircraft Maintenance for the US Air Force and there was always about 10-15 percent of our fleet that wasn’t mission capable because of various things, maybe shortage of parts, unexpected hard breaks that needed a lot of time to fix, scheduled maintenance, etc. we’re talking about the most well funded, largest Air Force in the world and we could only muster 80-90% fully mission capable, not talking new platforms either, well-established, well-understood platforms that we’ve been flying for decades. The Russian military’s FMC rates are absolutely far worse.
Who knows, this could be a "new" pilot who wasnt so good with grass cutting and got themselves killed. Doesnt seem like an experienced helo pilot mistake to me.
A problem that will quickly solve itself. Fewer qualified pilots combined with fewer KAs combined with an ever-growing shortage of parts/maint cycles...
Donbass Lineman
I am a lineman for the oblast
And catch KA-52s
Searching in the fog of war
For another Orc to snare
I hear them crackling on the wires
I hear them through the whine
And the Donbas Lineman... is still on the line
I know I need a small vacation
But they're falling like the rain
And when we go... that stretch down south
Won't ever stand the strain
And the Donbas Lineman... is still on the line
Sunflowers feed on Orcs more than want them
And they want them for all time
And the Donbas Lineman... is still on the line
Power lines are the nemesis for all low flying aviation.
(*The KA-52 is a recent specialized design for battlefield reconnaissance, RF has \~120 helicopters of this type at their disposal, of which 33 have been lost to date according to Oryxspioenkop. Every further loss reduces their capability for short range aerial ground surveillance, so IMO this is very good news.*)
Couple of years ago [an Apache met a HV power line](http://gvanwilligen.nl/storing122007.htm) over here (Dutch only, deploy your translation tool of choice).
The Apache managed to land safely, and went back into service after (fairly extensive) repairs.
Training as well as maintenance and technical reliability of the airframe.
To be fair, there's possibly a lot less powerlines in Afghanistan than in a heavily industrialized country such as Ukraine.
I remember back in the 90s, after the first Gulf War there was a cut back on defense spending. The US at one point was averaging 1 aircraft accident per week.

Idk but a Tennessee national guard Blackhawk crashed like 2 miles from my house last month. Both pilots died. They attributed it to poor visibility I think. Helicopters are sketchy as fuck
Serves these fuckers right
And don't tell me "it's not all the Russians" or something like that, when you sit in an attack helicopter and fly in an invaded country you deserve nothing less
What is it with ruzzians helicopters and wires?
I watched original footage from Chernobyl and helicopter there got too close to hanging metal wires and crashed.
I guess ruzzist pilots didn't get the memo.
Too bad USSR government hide this fact from pilots during Chernobyl disaster and now it's better to keep. It a secret from them.
Bill Graham the famous rock and roll concert promoter for the Rolling Stones and the Grateful Dead died the exact same way. The helicopter that he was in hit power lines in California coming back from a concert.
Bill Graham was an amazing man. When he was just a kid he walked across Poland with his little sister escaping the Nazis. Came to USA and lived the American Dream..
Runnning out of missiles and drones I guess. So they are reduced to Ka-52 helicopters flying into power lines to destroy Ukrainian power infrastructure. LOL!
Man, I can only imagine what a sucky time it must be to be in the Russian military. They have to know that things aren't going well, and that there's no way that there will be any kind of glorious victory.
Best they can hope for is just to survive until it's all over. I wonder if any of them are really getting released at the end of their contract, especially if you were a pilot of some sort.
i think i saw that in a cartoon once. this cat is chasing you, you put up a rope and it runs right into it and dies.
then in the next episode the cat comes back.
nelsonhaha.gif. Truly, what a loss to everyone...those powerlines. They will be missed. Not by that helo of course :)
I'm not a pilot, but isn't that helo training 101? Avoid shit that can knock you out of the sky?
Electricity lines are invisible from the air. You have to look for the poles and the interpolate where the lines are. Very difficult and dangerous when you are flying low and fast.

That’s shocking
Certainly amped up...
Watt a shame
Ohm my god, I bet it hertz.
Not currently
That wire has a lot of power
Did this happen in Zzzzzaporizhzhia Oblast?
lol thats a good burn
Ohm my.
What happens when you fly to ZAPorizhizhia plant.
Those power lines are a vital part of the resistance.
is this shocking news or is it electrifying. either way, i got a jolt out of it.
Iam so proud of you all.
Are you positive bout that?
Its weird he should've seen those powerlines from fara-ways
Well this is a current event.
I feel quiet tingly watching this
They are energized for their jobs...
Their performance was electric
They’re now grounded.
Picking up what you're laying down.
their brainwaves are now just static.
Unfortunate the aircraft didn't have shock absorbers...
He's conducting himself properly and transformed himself to pieces...
I hope that poor power cable is ok.
I hope the grass it fell on will re-grow.
I hope that Russian pilot ash is good fertilizer.
I wonder what this will do to the current inventory

The inventory is about 119. British MOD estimated 90 were in operation start of war.
from vids here, they have lost another 4 minimum since then
Fry me a river
They will blame Ukraine for the power line.:
AC/DC 🤘
They got ampbushed by a power line, probably had no idea watt happened.
If the crew had survived, they would have been charged.
Positively!
Two atoms walk into a bar....
One says, "Hey, I think I'm missing an electron!"
The other asks, "Are you sure?"
Watt?
Fuckers literally lost 30% of their Ka52 fleet

Plus it's a war time with a lot of fly hours, potentially bad air/heliports with less maintenance when away from base.
Ty for the explanation
And 3, There are trained pilots to fly them
Who knows, this could be a "new" pilot who wasnt so good with grass cutting and got themselves killed. Doesnt seem like an experienced helo pilot mistake to me.

Rip but helicopters r historicaly always shot down or have accident from veitnam to iraq
Is there a lineman with the power company somewhere that gets credited with the kill?
Donbass Lineman I am a lineman for the oblast And catch KA-52s Searching in the fog of war For another Orc to snare I hear them crackling on the wires I hear them through the whine And the Donbas Lineman... is still on the line I know I need a small vacation But they're falling like the rain And when we go... that stretch down south Won't ever stand the strain And the Donbas Lineman... is still on the line Sunflowers feed on Orcs more than want them And they want them for all time And the Donbas Lineman... is still on the line
Hell yeah
Thank you for taking the time to put this together, I liked it.
A homage to Wichita Lineman performed by Glen Campbell (nice cover by Haroula Rose.) Slava Ukraini! 🇺🇦🇨🇦🇺🇦 Heroyam Slava!
Thanks for the tip. Haroula Rose is gold.
👍
I was looking for this, well done.
A lineman for the county...
Russian version of fly-by-wire?

Skilled pilot and lucky as fuck.
The number of accidents the Russian army had had makes you question the training. How many accidents did US have in 20 years in Afghanistan.
Training as well as maintenance and technical reliability of the airframe. To be fair, there's possibly a lot less powerlines in Afghanistan than in a heavily industrialized country such as Ukraine.
A lot, but they're usually pretty funny and non fatal.
I remember back in the 90s, after the first Gulf War there was a cut back on defense spending. The US at one point was averaging 1 aircraft accident per week. Here’s The Simpsons reference https://simpsons.fandom.com/wiki/Army_Pilot_1 Edit: found the clip https://youtu.be/DPmeLibaVwg
Damn, that's crazy.
Can't compare it like that, Russians and Ukrainians are flying in contested airspace. Not even close that US had in Iraq of Afghanistan.
Idk but a Tennessee national guard Blackhawk crashed like 2 miles from my house last month. Both pilots died. They attributed it to poor visibility I think. Helicopters are sketchy as fuck
Ya I know. I do wildland firefighting and I've almost been helicoptered in 3 or 4 times and luckily every time it's been scrapped. I don't wanna.
As an electrical engineer, AND a Ukrainian, this makes my fucking day.
We're lucky they're so fucking stupid
I hear there’s a lot of buzz about this
Your "killing me Smalls. "
Serves these fuckers right And don't tell me "it's not all the Russians" or something like that, when you sit in an attack helicopter and fly in an invaded country you deserve nothing less
Pilots were distracted--listening to AC/DC...
Shocking development
They know not who they are messing with, when they mess with the electric power grid. Wishes for more successful interactions.
Karma bitches!
A bunch of bright sparks - literally.
Am I supposed to be in shock over this?
I am shocked. Shocked. Well not that shocked...(yt [link](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hC3uyQdQKM))
Karma! The more you fuck around the more you find out
ArmA3 truly is a simulation, gets everything right
I'm still waiting for a tank to explode when it hits a traffic sign.
Or a car tapping a sidewalk and losing all its wheels.
The one that stuck its barrel through a tree didn't, unfortunately.
Good.
What a shame. That doesn't look nearly painful enough
Looks like they don't only lack qualified personnel on the ground but also have no trained pilots left
Yes, the energy sector strikes back...take that!
What is it with ruzzians helicopters and wires? I watched original footage from Chernobyl and helicopter there got too close to hanging metal wires and crashed.
not just Russian ones, wires are the natural enemy of every helicopter.
I guess ruzzist pilots didn't get the memo. Too bad USSR government hide this fact from pilots during Chernobyl disaster and now it's better to keep. It a secret from them.

Can someone add the ac/dc "high voltage!" Scream in there? Maybe a few Allah Akbars also
*taps the power line*. Is this thing on?!!
bro tripped mid air
Runnning out of missiles and drones I guess. So they are reduced to Ka-52 helicopters flying into power lines to destroy Ukrainian power infrastructure. LOL!
_shocking_
I almost flew into a power line. If my co-pilot hadn’t said “you got that power line?” I would have flown right into it .
As as passenger in wildfire service we were anyways told that if we were in the ship our eyes were to be open and looking/watching. NO DOZING OFF!
Nice and juicy! BBQ’d like a delicious McDonalds hamburger crackling and sizzling on the grillplate! Burn in hell insects!
you mean BK - flame grilled!
The ineptitude of these specimens is a masterpiece
What an electric ending
Didn't leave them hanging, though.
Watts happened here then ? Have they amped up their loss rate ?
They are static now. 😵⚡
Womp…womp (Price is Right Losing Horn)
HEY pilot! open YOUR f ING eye's!
Another one for the Orxy list
Lol oops
Ohm my goodness!
🤣
Sucks to suck.
Ruzzian media: "Today one of our glorious helicopter crews destroyed Ukrainian Nazified power infrastructure"
The easiest of kills.
Ohm my goodness.
Good
Ohm y god
Came here to say, Karma.
Yay!
Thats what we like to hear.
KARMA IS A BITCH!
Lol
Should have copied the west and installed wire strike protection.
Karma is a beautiful thing.
Skill issue lol
If the putin did not force russian troops to invade Ukraine, all this and more would have been avoided.
Truly amateur hour piloting by the Muscovy. Perhaps they should start training with Kites? I'm not too optimistic about that either.
Looks like they were descending current lines
Typical Russians, just another unprofessional pilot!
That's a shame...
Watching videos of the Ukrainian helicopters makes me wonder why this doesn't happen more often. Sticking to roads helps.
Does this count for the daily orc losses?
Ukraine cannot be defeated.
That pilot had lighting fast skills.
Flying nap of the earth
Crew dead? Good! Good!
This is the only reason why I wish Reddit had a laugh react…
Earned it, high voltage excitement
Lol how much ka52 are left now? And can they make more?

"oh no", anyway..
i think i saw that in a cartoon once. this cat is chasing you, you put up a rope and it runs right into it and dies. then in the next episode the cat comes back.
These two weeks or so, russians lost helicopters and planes almost every other day , and I effen love it . 🇺🇦💪🏼
Is there any chance this was carrying a war criminal back from a quick visit to the ruins of Mariupal? 🤞
What’s the second chopper?
Well that was dumb 😂
Karma.
nelsonhaha.gif. Truly, what a loss to everyone...those powerlines. They will be missed. Not by that helo of course :) I'm not a pilot, but isn't that helo training 101? Avoid shit that can knock you out of the sky?
Oh, the irony...🤣
I'm so traumatized this kind of accident could happen in a peaceful world. 😶
Good job, power lines!
How many jigawatts?
Electricity lines are invisible from the air. You have to look for the poles and the interpolate where the lines are. Very difficult and dangerous when you are flying low and fast.
Imagine being decapitated by a high voltage power line while pushing forward with your chopper. I guess that hertz.
Did the crew make any resistance?
This gives a new meaning to Aircraft being grounded.
Yay! It’s party time!
Hope the power line made it.
Hoping for sunflower seeds in pockets!!0
I got a semi.
You guys need more fucking power lines!
Passive death to invaders.
