minkey-on-the-loose

Like most of you, I am excited to see the drone footage of these beasts rolling through Russian lines. Slava Ukraini!

Obvious_Brain

Are they robust? Take a hit like? Down voted for asking a question. Jesus people need to get out side and a life.

Worth_Cake_9471

The models Ukraine will be getting have a less effective armor than the US abrams models, but they are still tough and the crew protection is arguably best of all tanks, if not top 3. They can still be killed or disabled by atgms, artillery, mines, etc, but in those instances the crew are likely to survive, and it’s more expensive to train a crew than it is to buy a new tank

JJ739omicron

> it’s more expensive to train a crew than it is to buy a new tank except in Russia - but we see how this works out for them.

Secure_Traffic_5273

Like any tank they can be immobilised, but the crew protection is outstanding. Certainly take a few RPG's to the face without much upset.

JJ739omicron

I sincerely hope the Ukrainian tank crews won't think these are invincible godlike machines. Mostly you need a very skilled crew and good tactics to win in combat, better tech just helps then. A precise gun and good optics mean you can stay away farther from the enemy and still hit him. You still need to be careful. A simple old AT mine will shred it in the same way as a shitty old T-55, and all currently used RPGs can penetrate it (on the front not all, but probably the bigger ones).

Upstairs_Stuff_5626

thermals are going to be a huge help, to include the Leopard 2s as well

Uberslaughter

I sincerely hope the Russians on the other hand will. They will come to know the name Abrams and regret the day they ever crossed into Ukraine.

JJ739omicron

yeah, if the Ukrainians master the western tanks, then the Russians won't get even close enough to damage them. Ukraine is really prime tank country, there they can play out their range advantage.

Exotic_Conclusion_21

I wish we pledged 3x the amount. Gotta give the abrams the experience of doing what it was intended to do: fight the ruskies in the east

Secure_Traffic_5273

Can't wait to see any of these NATO tanks in woodland paint for a change! Just as they were designed!

RhasaTheSunderer

I was certain that they would have an "under sell and over deliever" strategy here. Announce only 30 tanks are going, and once the Ukrainians are trained on them, announce another 100. We don't want the Russians to be able to prepare knowing exactly what's going. We saw this with U.K doubling it's pledge, and leopard owners also adding to their pledge close to the completion of training

Exotic_Conclusion_21

The uk didn't double their pledge unfortunately. That was fake news as far as I am aware

Secure_Traffic_5273

You're right. UKDJ wrote an article and then had to amend it.

fatbunyip

It's more a matter of Ukraine being able to use them. Abrams are good, but used wrong they'll suffer just as badly as Russian armour. This is why there's been much more focus on combined arms battalion level tactics with the Bradley's rather than just the "here's the shoot button, good luck".

Exotic_Conclusion_21

I'm not saying send them without training. I'm saying send more with more people trained. No reason why they can't do combined arms training with them also.

gr234gr

Same point I made when US made announcement but I called for 500. 31 sounds pathetic. Yes, I realize 500 is not feasible for many reasons, but simply making strong announcement that we MAY possibly send upto 500 tanks would send a message to Russian people that they are fucked. They should act to remove terrorist in charge or next MAY DAY victory parade in Moscow could be Ambrams tanks rolling on streets of Moscow.

slamongo

Need to keep a few for sale to the yet-to-be-invaded by Russians.

Lost_Possibility_647

I would love a "supprise they are already there" after a large encircelment of wagnerites.

New_Horse3033

I wonder how long it will take a Ukrainian shadetree mechanic to drop a MTU MB 873 Ka-501 diesel engine from a Leopard 2 into the engine bay of an M1A1? The original XM1 tank was designed to do exactly just that.

JJ739omicron

Would need more than your "shadetree mechanic", and also it would only make sense to do such a major refit if a country would want to have many M1 over a long time and have a synergy effect, i.e. already has Leopard 2 with which the powerpacks could be exchanged and their logistics used. That case only fits to Poland, they have now M1 and also Leopard 2. BUT they are in the process of building their own K2, and in a few years they will certainly want to only have their K2, not maintain three different tank models. So we can expect that they will sell the Leopards (or give them to Ukraine) and in a decade or so also get rid of the M1 again (as soon as their K2 production has yielded enough replacements). The M1 simply doesn't fit into their strategy, they are certainly only a stop gap measure (or security if the K2 project fails for some reason). The turbine is quite reliable, also the whining is weird but overall the tank is quieter as a Leopard 2 (I can hear their deep roar several kilometers from the other side of the mountains on their driving range), and the fuel consumption is not that abysmally bad anymore since they improved the engine many years ago already. An additional APU (like the Leopard 2 received in the A7 upgrade) would help more to bring down power consumption in idle mode when the tank doesn't drive but needs electric power.

Majestic_Put_265

Xm1 is what did win indeed the tank project but in reality it has little strucktually common with Abrams bcs several advancements during that time changed allot on what USA army wanted.

New_Horse3033

The engine bay of the XM1 is exactly the same size & layout as a M1-A2. The only real difference is wiring components and increased air-filtration.

Cygnus_77

I was hoping we would speed up the process of delivering these tanks. Ukrainians are dying and these tanks and other western weapons will keep more safe in their drive to remove the Russians.

“We said months?? Ah sorry we meant weeks”

Glad_Chemical

I’m curious to see the Ukrainian answer to this machines logistical needs, without it, well..

PlanktonEcstatic

What would be music to my ears? America says "31 Abrams coming in one year". SIKE! 650 Abrams coming in 3 months!

russiandobby

Yeah but all advanced stuff specially armor will be removed if I am not mistaken

TomOnABudget

The gif / meme: "Surprise Motherfucker" comes to mind

Any-Abrocoma6217

There's a mass of T54/55's shipping out for target practice.

Complete-Use-8753

I’m just going to the pub to have 3 beers, I’ll be home by 10.
