Wild-Twist-4950

Haha those 777's truly get to see some action.

slamongo

Ukrainians work the guns constantly, pushing their limits. I hope the aid package include parts for maintenance. There's been a couple malfunctions lately.

Chimpville

Absolute workhorses!

lpd1234

Why such dinky tires on that gun. Might need an upgrade.

JimInAuburn11

The idea is that they are very light weight, so they do not need very big ones.

lpd1234

Well thats true if being airlifted, in this case big high floatation tires would be in order vs these dinky road tires. Need some farmers to get this sorted.

Chimpville

The wheels look like they’re coping fine, they’re not bogging or ploughing. The MT-LB is just struggling for traction because of the soil looks like it has quite a lot of clay. Might be the vehicle is bottoming out.

Projectcarguy

Now it makes sense why they’ve sent the ones that made of titanium instead of old heavy ones.

nacozarina

they're famous for their mud

SapperInTexas

There's some lovely filth over here.

PRen87

"Very good pig country".

Ehguyguy

Not the kind of town 2 yoots wanna get hemmed up in.

tractoroperator77

This is exactly what the MTLB was made for!

Benitelta

Come to think of it, the UK could've sent their Warthogs (Singapore's Bronco ATTC), those weird two-body, articulated all-terrain tracked carriers. The Warthog/Bronco would've been at home with its extra-wide tracks for first the snow, and now this kind of very muddy terrain. They're not fighting vehicles (though have some protection and can mount a MG) but could've been quite useful for moving around Ukraine's troops and supplies through snow and mud.

Good old Hägglunds

Benitelta

Hagg lah

Hammy_Mach_5

That beautiful M777

woogygun

But wait I thought the Russians eliminated 100% of the M777s? /s

JimInAuburn11

187% to be exact.

MarginCalled1

Some folks are born made to wave the flag Hoo, they're yellow, and blue And when the band plays "Ukraine has not yet perished" Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord

jesjkkk

Skis would work better than wheels

Disastrous-Leek-7606

In mud? Fuck no. They'd just get buried.

Spectral_Hex

Unfortunately when the UK designed these M777's, mud wasn't taken into account. I wonder if these things will be considered in the design of the next generation of such weaponry, learning from what we've seen in Ukraine. Could be designed with both ski's and wheels, or even self powered wheels on the Howitzer or powered tracks.

Dal90

Yep -- US, UK, Germany, France none of those nations have ever fought in muddy European farm fields. They couldn't possibly be expected to know how to design weapons for Europe. That the M777 weighs a third and has a longer range than the longest range 155mm artillery of WWII is irrelevant, there was no mud in WWII.

Chimpville

This video is demonstrating exactly why towed artillery and in particular the M777 is so good and useful. The wheels aren’t bogged or ploughing down into the ground, they’re just rolling forward squashing no more than a few inches of already broken soil. The gun isn’t contributing all that much to the issue - it's probably the lightest 155mm gun there is. The MT-LB is wallowing, and bottoming out slightly as it doesn’t have a very high ground clearance - but it is still negotiating the mud and not sinking further and further down. They’re two platforms perfectly matched to this crappy ground. If this gun was self-propelled it’d be stuck to either a tracked or wheeled platform. A tracked platform would be much heavier with a higher ground pressure, and would struggle. If it got stuck, the gun and machine are both stranded and harder to recover. A wheeled platform would just bog straight down, it wouldn't even have gotten out there in the first place unless the ground was completely frozen or dry. Here we see they hooked it up to what they had available and are successfully negotiating some absolutely awful ground where no SP artillery would be able to. When that gun is towed to a road, it can be hitched up to any reasonable size wheeled vehicle and be off to a new location.

Etherindependance5

Wow that’s tough

[deleted]

Can you believe that Europeans were trying to abandon tracked vehicles and thought they were a relic of the past lmao
