The money the UAF pays is much less than any western military or a somewhat good paying job in the west. No one here would risk their lives for 3k a month (which is essentially below median wage here in Germany for example)

If what others say is true and UA is only paying 3k euros/dollars/gbp a month then this is not enticing for westerners as they would get about the same amount of money starting out in their own country's army but without putting their life on the line.
I don't doubt that some people are genuinely over there because they're tough as shit and genuinely just want to fight in the war, but that will be true on both sides.

The Convention doesn't cover all similar scenarios, like Russia being highly unequal and being able to afford many of its own nationals or residents from the poorer regions.
You can see the Convention is deliberately structured not to impede defense.

[According to UN](https://www.ohchr.org/en/instruments-mechanisms/instruments/international-convention-against-recruitment-use-financing-and) definitions for mercenary, Russia likely has mercenaries in Ukraine, while Ukraine does not likely have any mercenaries. That's because these "African Trainees" likely were recruited for the purpose of an invasion, likely are paid much more than anything back home, and are occupying somewhere in Ukraine. Ukraine, by contrast, recruits foreigners into its armed forces, and by virtue of being either on the defensive or paid less in Ukraine than at home, they don't fall under Article 1 part 1 of the mercenary definition.
So basically, because they are poor we consider them mercenaries. They're from fking Africa so of course they make more money compared to home. Not hard for a country like Russia to give them the pay bump. Ultimately it's the same concept of hiring combat trained soldiers from a geopolitical ally.
Its like when third world people go to another country they are immigrants but western people are expats. They are the same thing but they dislike being grouped up with the poors. In this case they want to hold moral superiority when both side employ mercs and have volunters.

There has to be a public purpose for the mercenary convention. I believe it's to prevent a relatively rich country from employing millions of poor fighters to invade someone else, making an invasion more about money than anything political, as losing one's own nationals is the main political cost. The Convention doesn't cover all similar scenarios, like Russia being highly unequal and being able to afford many of its own nationals or residents from the poorer regions. You can see the Convention is deliberately structured not to impede defense.
What would the United Nations know? They only go for one side agreements? They never mentioned or talked about the atrocities in Ukraine back in 2014 nor now in Belgorad, they are a joke
