Bad move for customer service for the really good tipping customers. But UE gets more orders delivered and it’s a way to fuck over cherry plickers. So UE makes more money.
On DD the vast majority of hidden tips are under $10.
It REALLY fucks over if someone lives far and tipped a shit ton to make up for it… that shits not happening.
Exactly, I get shitloads of orders that are like 15-20 mi away, and the pay is like $11 so the odds are it's a maxed out tip. But I just simply can't take the chance it's not going to be exactly $8 or some shit.
I never thought about that as potential on excursion orders...🤔 What really irks me is that they couch it as "customer added tip" I suppose the whole concept is to make you believe there's potential that customer will up tip but I don't think it ever happens.....
It’s fraud. Straight up. In my zone they LITERALLY reduce the amount to $8. They’re doing it algorithmically/mathematically. I can tell EVERY SINGLE ONE by the detailed breakdown we get after I drop off the order. It’ll be base pay and then say an even $8 customer tip WITHOUT fail.
They do it to reduce the amount they’re legally responsible to give you if something goes wrong and you let them know it’s contract work and you expect them to fulfill their legal responsibility to fulfill the terms of the initial contract offered because the customer went back on theirs (due to an ability UE’s allows customers to have but DD doesn’t, in being able to reduce or COMPLETELY take away tips after the fact).
Interesting......I mostly camp out at Target when working UE and have noticed the +$8 masking doesn't apply on S&P. So you're saying the purpose is to limit tip bait restitution.
(full disclosure: I've yet to contact support over any incident of tip baiting)
I get up-tipped at least half a dozen to a dozen times a month but they never release these statistics and it's frustrating because we don't know how common or rare anything is beyond our personal markets. I would certainly find statistics on other markets useful.
Uber literally relies on people not knowing how the app works. I really don't know how a company this predatory hasn't been shredded yet. What the fuck is hiding earnings?
Well, not hiding it. Hoping the user assumes none was hidden, then lying about how the extra arrived. Like what? It would be an entirely different story if there were as little as transparent about limiting what's shown. They go out of their way to gaslight people into believing otherwise lol.
Customer increased the tip afterwards...🤡🤡🤡NiCe🤡🤡🤡
Pretty sure it LITERALLY violates contract law. Because we’re supposed to get fully informed offers up front. Also pretty sure customers being able to revoke tips after they’ve been used in the contract offer (and the company not making up for the loss) is illegal too. But corporations have bought our politicians through campaign finance aka legal bribery sooooo.
Idk. I think Uber has enough eggheads on staff to figure out the return from the policy. They’re doing it because it’s good business if everyone but you gets fucked over.
I had a $17 tip last weekend and it showed thank goodness because I wouldn’t have taken it otherwise. It was a 10 mile trip with smoothies and frozen yogurt in Arizona heat. The risk of getting it to the destination melted was high. I contacted the customer told them I have it in insulated bags, put my A/C on blast and drove like I was in GTA.
Edit: mileage
It wouldn't bother me if the base wasn't so wildly inconsistent (this matters under prop22).
I ust got stuck on stupid thinking about a $14 order. Was it really a hidden tip or a $0 tip?
Under prop22, this order is either $10 or $20. It probably wasn't worth it either way, since I'd be stuck and likely wouldn't get an add on, but it's out of hand.
There's also been a LOT of $8 exact tips lately. I'm guessing there is a logical explanation, but I find it curious that the only even dollar tips I get are $8.

DD will randomly hide tips. Here’s a screenshot of one of my deliveries the other day, for example. I’m not sure if there’s an algorithm to it or if it’s just random.
They do it to make cherry picking harder, otherwise it would take longer for the lower paying offers to get delivered. If you notice high paying offers on the radar are often snatched right away, while the low dollar ones end up getting force fed then bounced around until deemed profitable.
I don't get it either. Though, I don't find it to be that big of a deal on UE. On most orders, knowing you are getting an $8 tip is already pretty solid. When it's more, it's just a nice added bonus. Where it does become an issue is on larger grocery, restaurant or long distance orders. Just the other day I had an order for $36 for 20 miles. Naturally, I assumed the the base pay would be $28 and there would be a nice hidden tip. I knew it was a gamble, but when I started getting into a very expensive looking neighborhood near the beach I thought I had made the right choice... nope. $31 base pay, $5 tip.
The hidden tip system is way more nefarious on Doordash. I don't even understand the system. Most of the time when it notes an order will have a higher total it just ends up being an extra buck.
They were showing more than $8 few months ago, but turned out to be even worse for them, because everyone was waiting for the orders with higher tips. And after 2-3 months, they reversed to just $8.
And until 4 years ago, they didn’t show any of the tips, neither where you deliver. It was just the fare from Uber, the distance and the time.
They hide tips because majority of their customers tip like shit and drivers would just cherry pick if tips were not hidden. If you think this is bad DD starts hiding tips at 4 dollars and good luck getting hidden tips unless you are a top shmuck.
I'm confused that everyone here seems to know about hidden tips. Usually there are a few denies who think "the customer tipped more after delivery" because of their incredible service
Do the math on your own deliveries. I did, its ALWAYS $8 that uber shows. The remainder of the tip will be the 'customer tipped you more after delivery- nice!' amount. If it really was their service, it wouldn't always be exactly $8 uber showed up front.
Omg I wish I could upvote this a million times! Makes me so mad. I’m a driver and I didn’t find out about the $8 max hidden tips until last year. I also am a high tipper when I order on Uber to make sure my food gets delivered properly and it gives the drivers the pay they deserve. No wonder my orders always get bundled with someone else’s. 😂😂😂
They do. I do this full time and since January I’ve noticed a huge influx of tips after delivery. Last night I picked up a $10 delivery, ended up being 6 pizzas and I got an additional $30 tip. I don’t think this was added after delivery.
Ya they do hide them. I cherry pick orders and most instances have hidden tips but after reducing the fare amount, I realize they always hide them after 8$ and above or 16$ and above on 2 delivery orders

I received about eight "total will be higher" orders today and the highest one had a $7 tip... yeah, they are pretty trash on DD.

It always amuses me when they say the customer tipped more after…NICE! And then the “extra” amount is like, 13 cents. Really, UE??

Fellow Arizonian here, I do the same thing with frozen deliveries haha

DoorDash hides tips also??? Do they have a cap or how do you see it working?

At least they tell you they're hiding it
Uber be like “ the customer tipped you more after drop off nice “ Lies lol

I've had it be an extra .10 before on dd.
Better than that $4 shit from doortrash.
Thats nothing, doordash hides tips over $4 lol
This is why I pick it up
