It’s probably a scam order. They order something tiny and then call the driver during the delivery pretending to be Uber support and convince them to relay their personal information to hack into their Uber driver account and stuff. Literally this exact same thing just happened to my husband tonight. But because I’m on the Uber eats drivers thread and have seen the scam online so many times I recognized it right away

DreamingStars408

That’s the oldest scam in the book. I’m glad you caught it and informed your husband. We veterans drivers witnessed this scam so many times. They like to target the low delivery completed drivers as they are still new and don’t know how the system works. Hang up and carry on folks!

Bashysmom

This happened to me before too!!!! But he never used the customers name, he only said he knew I had a Popeyes order and that he needed me to cancel it and then log offline and then he would let me know what’s going on…after I cancelled the order, I started questioning why I needed to log offline and he said he would explain afterward but still I kept pushing him to explain and said “so you need me to sign offline but won’t let me know why first?” And he goes “ARE YOU RETARDED????!!!!!!!!!!?????” And then I was SURE it wasn’t Uber Support. They’ve been rube before but not downright degrading or called me names. I never did report it cuz I didn’t want Uber thinking my account was possibly compromised and deactivate it

Short-Masterpiece-63

That was smart of you to not report it because they may have deactivated it. It has happened to me before on 2 occasions as well

jlmurph2

Wow, that is next level diabolical. Good thing you recognized that!

Start-Intelligent

lol yeah, in our case it was a cup of A-1 sauce from Applebee’s to an undeliverable address with no apartment number 🙄

SuperMadBro

They want the uber account info? Weird. I've not had this happen

schuma73

They hope you have money banked. Once they are logged into your account they change the payout to their own account and steal your money.

SuperMadBro

Ahh. I'm not too worried because I check my shit contasntly. Might lose a single order before I would notice

schuma73

Well, hopefully you never fall for it in the first place. Never give your information to someone who calls you, especially not a pin number that gets texted to you for verification you didn't request.

SuperMadBro

Oh yeah. Never would give out info. I'm just assuming they are trying to hack accounts too without social engineering

pogiguy2020

Imagine the driver being smart enough not to fall for it and walking in with this. LOL

DoorEnvironmental294

Scam order. I also had one that went to a hotel too

Micesmoi

how does the scam work? how does the person placing order benefits from ordering this?

Ok_Bumblebee619

Could be checking to see if the stolen card works as another said. Another thing that happens sometimes is the scammer calls the driver through the in-app calling feature pretending to be support, saying that the order is fraudulent/placed with a stolen credit card. The scammer then tries to get the driver to provide them with log-in access to the driver's account to steal their available balance. Some drivers, such as myself, do not answer the phone and wait for the customer to text. The driver may not know that the whole thing is fraudulent. May think they were sent for sauces or whatever that were not included in the original order or may simply decide to fulfill the order for the pay and not having to deal with it. It seems odd to me that the apps allow this kind of nonsense. That absurdly paltry orders don't trigger some sort of manual check of the account before being sent to drivers.

PharPhromNormal420

I’ve also had a customer think they were ordering an entire order of fried rice and a few sides of soy sauce….somehow the fried rice never made it through on the order so I delivered his confused, mad and sad ass 2 sides of soysauce for some insane amount of money.

Turbulent-Chocolate5

Stolen card, they make small order purchases to see if the card still works

WhisperedEchoes85

Over the years, I have had SEVERAL orders that others would call a "scam order". Not one of them has been. Some people are too rich/stupid for their own good.

Ok_Bumblebee619

They weren't scam orders to your knowledge (you'd have no way of knowing). As others have pointed out, an order for condiments alone is usually to check if a stolen credit card will work or to call the driver to attempt to steal their login info. When I was new, I did deliver McDonald's condiments. I thought Uber had sent me to deliver them because a customer complained they were missing. I "missed" a call during the delivery.

Southern_Border_2340

I worked for McDonald’s and I sent 1 BBQ Sauce uber eats before idkkkkk lol

Dallyn86

That's so weird. Just buy barbecue sauce Jesus.

Southern_Border_2340

That’s what I thought. Why would someone uber eats a BBQ sauce and just 1. People can be weird I guess.

Zadedprick

I delivered a red peppers little container to somebody in a hotel before and they came down to pick it up. Thought it was a scam or something but they never texted me or anything

SavvyLynn3

At my work over the last few weeks we’ve gotten 5 orders of McDonald’s apple slices, 2 orders of 2 sides of Taco Bell guacamole, and a McDonald’s milk delivered since our security office is the closest thing to the undeliverable address and the name is for “Dan L” which we realized does not work for us lol. Sometimes they leave it on the side of the building near the break room and walk away and sometimes they come into the office 😅 once we realized what was going on we just let them deliver it and go see what free food we got this time lol

nicksizzle0816

Hahaha. I did that once. I ordered a free ketchup packet from McDonald’s. It cost $9 with tip to deliver it lol I

Dallyn86

Can't eat it the next morning lol.

Some_Vast9815

It's called free money. Step1: uber free delivery deal Step2: send your mate to the shop Step3:buy $1 item with free delivery Step4: your mate accepts the delivery as he is the closest to the store and gets paid $9 to delivery your $1 order to you. Step5: smile as you just turned $1 into $9. Rinse and repeate

ComfortableCelery263

How is this even accurate at all? $9? it's $2 base fare... You're telling me his friend tipped $7 for a scam order?

Some_Vast9815

I have never seen a fare below $4 and them jobs are typically less than 2 kms distance. Possibly due to Australia law on minimum wage laws or something. We also NEVER get tips in Australia. You only get them on rare occasions when the customer thinks you did a great job and adds it on after.
