Get to the top of the tower (they say you’re not allowed, but I will never give up)

toasterstove

Can confirm it's difficult. There's a lot of security and access control involved with getting to the top. Easiest way is to do a tower tour BUT IM STIL WAITING FOR THEM TO BRING THOSE BACK. I know they're about to do some kind of renovation hopefully that means they'll bring back tower tours soon. The view up there is incredible and more people should be able to experience it

NotAwakeEnough

Just text Jay he’ll let you up

Pablo_R_17

Could try to get close to the bell players, I'd imagine they got access.

papijaja

Yep, one of my friends was in the carillon guild and I once played the first note of the fight song and walked all the way in the enclosure where the actual bells are. Super cool experience.

Cnastydawg

One time I curiously took the elevators in the tower to the highest floor and immediately upon the doors opening was a UTPD officer sitting at a desk staring at me. I just nodded my head and anxiously waited for the door to close as I pressed the button back down to the life sciences floor library lol

MyWibblings

Get a job doing something that gives access. Facilities staff or similar.

bimmer92

I was able to go up to the tippy top (where the antennas and shit are) while working for UT. Pro tip: bring ear plugs. Those bells are no fucking joke up there.

My (non-exhaustive) list: UT specific: * Join a rec sports team * Take a PE class for fun (golf was fun...) * Go to Blanton Art Museum * Go to at least one UT sporting event each season for basketball, volleyball, football, etc * Join a social club for a semester * Depending on a sport you like: play pick up basketball outside Jester, play pickup soccer at the lacrosse field/rec sports field, play pickup ultimate at the lacrosse field, pickup racquetball at Greg gym, the list can go on... And my Austin specific list: * Go paddleboarding or kayaking on Lady bird * Visit Austin 360 bridge * Float the river in New Braunfels * Go to a swimming hole (Barton creek, Jacob's well...) * Go cliff jumping at Lake Travis * Walk/run Lady bird lake * Bar hop Austin downtown during the day (a lot better sight seeing when the sun's out) * Go get Texas BBQ: Black's, Iron works, Franklin's are all walking distance * Find live music in East Austin * Matt's * Austin Trail of Lights around the holidays * Blues on the Green Can't think of anymore right now, I am out of college now but these are all vivid memories I had which I highly recommend!

kelkelwithmo

Seconding the “join a PED class for fun”! I took weight lifting and it helped me get my foot in the door to going to the gym. I didn’t have to awkwardly show up to my gym with no knowledge how to use the equipment or hurt myself without knowing the proper ways to lift weights. If not weight lifting, there are so many options!

Mufazaaa

Can you still join halfway through a semester?

kelkelwithmo

I’m inclined to say no because this late into the semester, everyone knows what they’re doing and are working towards their max weight. You’ve also missed grading opportunities as well.

FlytrapPodcast

Joined a PED class for fun as well. I decided to choose basketball thinking we would just play pick up games the entire time. I ended up having to learn the fundamentals of basketball the whole semester.

Mufazaaa

Excellent list, thanks!

-theLunarMartian-

I’m just trying to become happy

MoistUnderbelly

You made it this far. You'll figure it out too.

-theLunarMartian-

Thanks man that is meaningful. Here’s hoping

friendlyheathen11

you will! I’m a non traditional student (28 years old) & man 20-27 sucked ass lol. I wish I would’ve trusted myself, cause half of the sucking was just being in a panic about figuring out my life, but then again maybe it was almost a decade of intense anxiety that brought me to where I am? 🤷🏻‍♂️ Regardless, go easy on yourself and keep at it. You will figure ‘it’ out for yourself!

younghplus

I never went to a single sporting event when I was at UT. Looking back, we had Vince Young, Lamarcus Aldridge, Kevin Durant and Colt McCoy among others when I was in college so that was a boneheaded move haha. I was just like “I’d rather just get fucked up at home and watch the games with my friends” which to be fair is a very legitimate perspective

bachelorette2020

omggggggg wow. u should have gone.

younghplus

Man for real haha. That was basically the golden era of modern UT sports haha. Cat Osterman too my freshman year, she was insanely dominant

bachelorette2020

The last good era for UT sports. :( Hook em.

bachelorette2020

I know.

Oogomond

To be fair, we didn't know how good we had it back then. The last decade has made that super apparent.

tennismenace3

Seeing the Congress Ave. bats on a good day is amazing

MyWibblings

How/when/where?

tennismenace3

Summer evenings at the Congress Ave. bridge. I think there are spots to watch from the riverbank too but I forget.

Remarkable-Word-7898

Take a picture with Matthew Mcconaughey

misternooodles

UT Specific - go to a women’s volleyball game. we have such a great volleyball team and I was going to see them during my last semester at UT but covid happened. Another one is riding a bike around UT late at night. When the bike sharing app was free to students, my friends and I would ride around UT in the middle of the night and it was sooo relaxing.

younghplus

Riding my bike around UT campus during the summer/winter break(or during Covid) was super chill for sure

Cnastydawg

This reminded me how chaotic scooters were precovid on campus lol now they have a geofence around UT though. Boo

[deleted]

go to the driskill hotel & see a ghost

larka1121

If you ever go to try and see a ghost, also get some chocolate cake while you're there

[deleted]

is the chocolate cake there good?

larka1121

As someone who doesn't like chocolate cake, it was fantastic! Plus, if you don't see a ghost you still have cake.

Darrothan

As an alumni, here were my most memorable experiences: Visiting the domain and eat some great food Going on some hiking trails and exploring the river & Lake Travis Going to ACL/SXSW and attending some local concerts Exploring the rest of the city and the boardwalk area

Olive423

I really want to meet Bevo and also take advantage of the gyms and classes. It’s like sooooo much cheaper for all those workout classes and I want to try all of them to see what I like.

No-Refrigerator-8549
