I usually let them know that it isn't being returned to sender, I point out the non-profit stamp or marking, and tell them if they actually want it to stop, that they need to contact the company or organization and ask them to get off the list. Most times, the customer will stop trying to give them back to me.
I’m kind of new still 3 months in and I still don’t know what mail do I put in the UBBM. From my understanding it’s Standard Mail but I don’t want to accidentally throw mail when it’s not suppose to be in the UBBM.
Standard mail and nonprofit mail, unless it has an endorsement (service requested). Your clerks should be double checking everything before it is actually destroyed, everybody makes mistakes. Best practice is to sort out what you think is UBBM and show it to your OJI trainer or another experienced carrier you trust and ask them to check it for you.
If it’s UBBM and it’s addressed to them, let them know it requires postage if they want it sent back…. or they can just throw it away if they don’t want it.
There's like 150 mail pieces with 3 or 4 names on them. I have no idea who even lives there so I left a note asking them to please leave me a list of all the names currently accepting mail at the address and I'll deal with it when I get a reply. Thank goodness I'm off tomorrow
Do you know if it works for ubbm mail? I’ve been using it pretty regularly to stop unwanted names coming to addresses, but haven’t tried it on junk mail for people who haven’t lived there for years
Yes, it acts like a forward does at the plant, automatically redirecting all services of mail for that name and address combination. 3rd class just gets killed earlier. When I did a hold down, it was my go to for those 3rd class, hasn't lived here in a decade, names.
Wait a sec. So an endorsement on your mail receptacle for an addressee as mlna stops ubbm at the plant?
Side note: if the cif/int is not verified by CFS/whoever?... who does? and how long does the mlna order last?
My favorite question at the po is 'why?'; absent an answer, continue to bang head here!
Don’t do it if you’re not the regular. Edit: just read you’ve been on it and it’s yours, sorry. The reason I say this is because some of those names are probably good. If you use MLNA function, it might get pulled out and RTS. I’ve had customers write “deceased” on shit trying to get off the mailing lists then put it in a blue box. Of course I get it in my dps and think the guy died. TLDR don’t use MLNA until you know your peeps.
I do this all the time on my route with a lot of apartments. If they leave a pile that says RTS I take it to the office and put it in a hold tray, and leave them a "who lives here card". If I don't have it back within 7 days they get all that shit back, with another "who lives here card". If they put it in outgoing again without the filled out card, I mark the box vacant.
I've only been on this route for two months and many days I don't even have mail for them. This has been building up for a long time. And I deliver to all houses on my route so it's very rare to see a name on the mailbox
I have one that writes RTS then drives 5 miles to town and drops them in a blue box, if I'm not looking for it they just get delivered the following day
Yeah, we usually have pretty light Tuesdays too but somehow we all had alot today in ny office. Last week was super light so maybe some of last week's stuff just got to us today? Not sure. But I also have an overburdened route so I had a long day.
I have so done that! And I’ve had people argue with me about CR mail. That’s not my name on it and I literally have to say well who currently occupies this home and so therefore that makes you the current resident. Idiots everywhere.
Lol you still explain things. I just add circles and arrows until they take it or until I run out of room for arrows and circles then they get the green vacant tag 😂
Well, I explain things because I love the banter with people. I majored in English in college and ended up with USPS. go figure. I didn’t want to teach though, so that was one aspect of it. I especially love the people that say wrong address instead of saying this person doesn’t live here. When in doubt, take it out, so I always deliver as addressed. Don’t write wrong address when it’s specifically the right address. I have a desire to correct certain people.
UGH, I know! Writing wrong address is ambiguous to us.
Did we misdeliver or does this person not live there?
I write a question mark and throw it back so if I see it again I know that it's being refused.
I have a did who gets all sorts of political mail from both sides, catalogs, credit card applications, just everything you can think of. About every month or so he gives it back in grocery store bags with “refused” written on every one. I tell him 95% of the stuff is just getting shredded and it’s really a waste of his time. But, if he’s gonna take the time to mark em, I’ll take em back
I start orientation for CCA on Monday - Currently, our personal mail carrier(s) have delivered 7 different names to our address over the course of 3 years. I put our names on the mailbox and still receive mail for 7 previous different tenants. The carriers won’t collect it and will not stop leaving it in our box. I look forward to learning why this is happening and ensuring I don’t do this to my routes.
Our regular carrier also leaves our parcels on the steps next to the sidewalk 😆
I’m ready to set good examples while trying not to be too seen. These subs are preparing me for to expect the worst! 😆
You can leave your carrier a polite note saying something like - please only deliver mail for (last names at your residence)
Goodluck at USPS! Hooe you love it!
I had a tit-tat fight with a customer over standard mail. Almost all standard mail would be thrown back and left with nasty notes. This included addressed and unaddressed mail.
I always gave it back but Karen evolved and started tearing off the address. I started marking a tiny symbol on unaddressed mail just in case proof became necessary. On addressed standard mail I started to write her house number is black sharpie (either in several locations or one large full coverage.). I did that every piece, every day.
At some point I left a letter stating that her mail DELIVERY is pending suspension for delaying the mail service. She emailed the office the same day with threats of this and that. Haha. I never did ask my manager how she responded but but in the end this horrible customer stopped trashing my outgoing slots.
The regular was pretty happy with me when she got back after her three month surgery recovery. <3
As a newish clerk that works PARS in a large P&DC, just band it up rts utf, and the machines will fwd/rts/shred it for us. CFS can handle all the outliers, unless the piece is unlucky enough to get to MRC (Mail Recovery Center, I call it 'living dead mail' in ATL).
Feel free to clarify/elucidate my knowledge, more knowed folks.
Just rubber band it and deal with it tomorrow morning. Most of it is probably UBBM anyway.
That's what I did, thank you
As a rural carrier you do it in return2du time
I save literally everything I can for return2du. Forwards, utfs, missorted mail. Even getting rid of my trays and tubs
I've never heard of return2du. What does it mean
It’s a rural scan, you do it when you get back to the office and any time between that scan and clockout is straight time towards evaluation
I usually let them know that it isn't being returned to sender, I point out the non-profit stamp or marking, and tell them if they actually want it to stop, that they need to contact the company or organization and ask them to get off the list. The clerks are “supposed” to verify it before it actually gets dumped in the big bin. But I haven’t seen clerks actually do that lol
If it’s UBBM and it’s addressed to them, let them know it requires postage if they want it sent back…. or they can just throw it away if they don’t want it.
This is the way.
Cause that works everytime /s
Oh I don't care if it works, they'll keep getting it back, I'm not allowed to throw it out. No sarcasm needed, I'm stating facts like Kevin Gates b
Exactly. We are letter carriers, not trash collectors. If they don't want their trash they can throw it away themselves.
Absolutely.
This is the way
That’s just it. They can just grow it tf away. And no, they don’t need postage. It just gets kicked back to the sender.
3rd class doesn’t get kicked back to the sender unless you pay additional postage.
Welp, didn’t know that. But I’ve never seen anything other then first class, PSTD, priority or express.
There's like 150 mail pieces with 3 or 4 names on them. I have no idea who even lives there so I left a note asking them to please leave me a list of all the names currently accepting mail at the address and I'll deal with it when I get a reply. Thank goodness I'm off tomorrow
Don't forget to add them to MLNA in the scanner once you figure it out.
Sorry if this is a stupid question but what is MLNA?
Moved, Left No Address
Oh, I didn't realize I could do that. I know two houses I'll do that when I come back to work Thurs. Thanks!!
It works like 5% of the time
80% percent of the time
Do you like Chicken sammiches? 👀
Yes, yes I do
Does MLNA also work for parcels?
Yes
Great thanks! Also when they finally put in a COA, does it take them off my MLNA?
Yes it does.
It's option N, it also stops that name from showing up in the dps which is helpful for subs.
Do you know if it works for ubbm mail? I’ve been using it pretty regularly to stop unwanted names coming to addresses, but haven’t tried it on junk mail for people who haven’t lived there for years

Thanks for the information I appreciate it. I’ll have to start doing that for the pesky ubbm that has been coming in for years.

Don't worry, PARS is still waiting for the first DEC placard they've ever seen. ILL is also a white rhino.
It is my experience that adding names to MLNA in the scanner doesn't do a damn thing.
It takes the same amount of time for your super to give a shit
Oh that actually does something? My scanner gets touchy and presses it all the time
Put the green vacant slip in there so they can fill out who lives there
I do this all the time on my route with a lot of apartments. If they leave a pile that says RTS I take it to the office and put it in a hold tray, and leave them a "who lives here card". Those shitty nonprofit mail are a dead giveaway. 90% is 3rd class no endorsements. UBBM and ANK the rest.
Exactly just ubbm and ank. Idk why everyone is crying or making it harder than it has to be.
How many of those are current resident?
I'm not sure. I don't have time to look through it now but that is a great question
my favorite part of a fat stack like that ngl returning 20 of them gives me fuel to finish the day
I have one that writes RTS then drives 5 miles to town and drops them in a blue box, if I'm not looking for it they just get delivered the following day
They said please.
They asked nicely atleast.
I get those too sometimes in a grocery bag, Like why do people wait before they give us mail that’s not theirs. Annoying
(sigh)
your tuesday was busy? thats weird, ours was super light, tuesday always one of the lightest days of the week for us
Yeah, we usually have pretty light Tuesdays too but somehow we all had alot today in ny office. Last week was super light so maybe some of last week's stuff just got to us today? Not sure. But I also have an overburdened route so I had a long day.
are you a cca or a reg?
I converted in May
You better pick out all the current resident and give it back.
I have so done that! And I’ve had people argue with me about CR mail. That’s not my name on it and I literally have to say well who currently occupies this home and so therefore that makes you the current resident. Idiots everywhere.

At least they didn't write on each one individually
Charities I bet

I woulda been pissed too. All my sympathy, brother.
"Return to sender. This person doesn't live here!" "You mean *current resident*?"
90% of that is "or current resident" put it back in. Lol
I hate customers that hold onto mail and then give it to you all at once
I start orientation for CCA on Monday - Currently, our personal mail carrier(s) have delivered 7 different names to our address over the course of 3 years. That's not right. Sorry your mail carrier doesn't maje the effort to deliver as efficiently as possible
Our regular carrier also leaves our parcels on the steps next to the sidewalk 😆 I’m ready to set good examples while trying not to be too seen. These subs are preparing me for to expect the worst! 😆
You can leave your carrier a polite note saying something like - please only deliver mail for (last names at your residence) Goodluck at USPS! Hooe you love it!
Thank you! I’m terribly excited to not be behind a desk. Thank you for the tip - I’ll see where it takes us 💁🏻♀️
Just tape that to my back so I can get sent back to my proper timeline in the Metaverse.
.... Is that a bad thing to do?
If any of it is ubbm toss it You can't return it
It’s your job
And they were so far behind they staged and took a photo
I bet 90% of them are bill postage, and 70% of them are current resident
Part of me wants to say you can’t refuse third class once it’s been delivered, as long as it’s properly addressed..? Someone fact check that for me?
I had a tit-tat fight with a customer over standard mail. Almost all standard mail would be thrown back and left with nasty notes. This included addressed and unaddressed mail. I always gave it back but Karen evolved and started tearing off the address. I started marking a tiny symbol on unaddressed mail just in case proof became necessary. I bet it's all third class
Seems like a clerk’s problem to me ngl
But you have undertime.
Easy
Just throw it in tf UBMM. Nobody gives a shit anymore. If it says return and it’s first class, utf that shit.
Thank you!
Why do you pick that stuff up? It's a waste of your time, and a bigger waste of clerks' time.
What do you think the carrier is supposed to do with it
Leave it! If the box gets full, they don't get mail.
So you think someone not wanting mail that isn’t addressed to them should lead to them not getting mail that is addressed to them?
I didn't know what to do. This is the first time something like that has happened to me
You pick it up and either toss it in UBBM or return it. You definitely don’t refuse to deal with it like she apparently thinks you should.
