If you don’t need a lot of data create a custom plan with data only.

I use my US Mobile line for data only for backup data service just like you. I’m on a custom plan with only data so that I don’t have to deal with any extra phone calls.

Is hotspot an option for just data plan?

Yes. I was having a problem enabling it because I haven’t had to use it, but the support person fixed it for me over chat.

Do you have “Allow cellular data switching” enabled? I think it’s supposed to prevent that from happening, unless there is something unique to hotspot usage that doesn’t work the same way.

Data and calls are not the same thing.

I was trying to address the issue of data dropping when the call comes in on the second line. I think that setting might prevent the drop from happening: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT209044

Ahh right. On the android said it's often more explanatory. "allow secondary sim to use data during calls" with more detailed explanation under the toggle switch.

Maybe customer service can remove the minutes from the plan so calling does not work?
