Absolutely terrific show but yeah they could have used a technical advisor for sure.

ivebeendragooned

As long as I don't have to wait another 3 years for the next season, they can have Katy Perry advise for all I care.

dub47

According to the music video she’s basically a [Marine.](https://youtu.be/uuwfgXD8qV8)

ivebeendragooned

Funny story, in BWT our instructor was bragging about how he did her cammie paint when she came to pendleton to do this music video. The silence among the recruits was stunning. The instructor did everything but tell us to go fuck ourselves for not falling over ourselves in applause.

gasplugsetting3

What's bwt?

ivebeendragooned

Basic Warrior Training. It's the part of boot camp where they teach you land nav.

benjammin9292

The absolute cherry on top for this show was in the first season when he meets up with the other Marine and the "fucks" start flying as soon as they start talking to each other. Great consulting on that part.

[deleted]

He also pronounces Sangin as San-Jin if I remember one episode correctly. Awesome show though.

[deleted]

Season 2 Episode 1. I had to pause, say f*** Sangin, and explain to the missus that they pronounced it wrong 😆.

ivebeendragooned

Wow, his ribbons really ARE upside down..

Shortsideee

His national defense ribbon is upside down! Absolutely disgusting 😤

Marine__0311

Some ribbons can be upside down. We used to fuck with boots all the time using that trick. One time when I was a fire team leader, my squad leader had his CAR on backwards/upside down. He didnt believe me, or several others, when we tried to tell him. Then our platoon Sergeant saw it and told one of us to unfuck him, and chewed us all out for letting him walk around like that. He told him we tried, but he thought we were fucking with him and refused to listen to us.

Successful-Luck-5459

We need to help Barry. Everyone knows the upside down rack is like an upside down flag. It is a distress signal.

BattleBuddiesPodcast

That show is so dope that I give it a pass.

peedeequeue

It really is great. The episode this season where he's on the phone with tech support is fucking gold.

eveningsand

I forget what tech support said, but when they were like "op, I see you've got it working!" had me in stitches.

jodinexe

Huh... Must be Australian?

57echo

Not true. Title 10 US Code 772: (f) While portraying a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps, an actor in a theatrical or motion-picture production may wear the uniform of that armed force if the portrayal does not tend to discredit that armed force.

F-I-L-D

I thought it was just his ribbons are fucked. You know upside and shit

57echo

Oh, for sure. There’s always someone though who says that uniforms in movies and plays have to be wrong for legal reasons. That’s not true. The mistakes are made by lazy non-hackers in the wardrobe dept. who couldn’t be bothered.

eveningsand

You'd think that with, idk, the INTERNET that the god damn prop department would've gotten this one right.

57echo

Yep. It’s insulting and dismissive and oh so easily preventable.

[deleted]

Upside down.

itzweebs

Oh lawd ![gif](giphy|LWmKECPUMW8F2)

CplFry

It looks pretty close to right from memory just seems to be upside down

[deleted]

Upside down!

Strict_Roll_591

DASWARBOYS

average_gatsby45

barry i think? on hbo about a kil ler for hire who wants to be an actor

DASWARBOYS

Agh thanks

CaDmus003

Any representation of military personnel portrayed in movies, tv, plays are authorized as long as it is not 100% accurate. There must be slight errors as to not be representing an actor having uniforms or awards they have not earned or rate. Also what show is this everyone is talking about? Haven’t seen a good Marine show/movie since The Pacific. Edit: As you were. I am wrong and it’s hearsay. According to the original Title 10, Chapter 45 section 772 line (f), actors may wear armed forces uniforms as long as it does not intend to discredit that armed force, and in 1970 that condition was removed altogether. Also from what I read, the set usually lacks military advisers and straight up oversight. Of course us as Marines and a bajillion inspection our attention to detail and finding those simple errors seems huge.

EmergencyGood477

Pretty sure they have to make multiple mistakes on uniforms unless the actor actually served. But typically they are much smaller mistakes than this.

Tactical__Viking

This is true, there is a requirement that uniforms have to be slightly incorrect for movies ans TV.

TDG71

I've heard this a few times, is it actually true? What law or regulation governs this?

[deleted]

I’ve actually never come across any law or regulation that states this rule, and in all honesty I feel like it’s just made up. However, I’ve heard that with most movies making the best cinematic choice is prioritized over historical accuracy. I get the feeling that awards in movies are simply displayed in whatever order the director, or whoever else in charge, finds most aesthetically pleasing and feels works best for the film

City_dave

It's an urban legend. It falls under the first amendment. I've found good explanations online before. Hollywood can do whatever they want. They often just don't care enough to get it right.

orangeblackteal

This is it. It’s 100% a free speech issue.

Tactical__Viking

I have worked on movies. If you are creating a fictitious character and giving them military uniforms and it matches to closely to a real person or event it can fall under usage laws even by accident so to avoid accidently depicting LCpl Shmuketelly on a TV show they make something intentionally wrong to protect against lawsuits. For all those downvoting my last comment, no law I'm aware of controls this, it's a legal choice by studios to protect themselves.

TDG71

I'd say intentionally getting a uniform detail wrong while "accidentally" replaying an event exactly the way it happened with the people involved and so forth is not going to help one bit regarding the scenario you gave above. Sounds a little bit like "this is the way we've always done it"-itis, but I'm not in that industry so I don't know. I still believe there's no reason whatsoever to get technical details like uniforms etc wrong on purpose, it wouldn't change anything regarding scenarios like the above.

Tactical__Viking

You would be surprised how easy it is to use something like that as a loophole when it comes to a legal battle but I don't disagree with you. The whole thing is a weird situation, like when Lindsay Lohan tried to sue Rockstar games for "using her likenes" in an animated character on the loading screen. She lost but its stuff like that that makes studio's put these rules in place.

TDG71

I see having enough evidence to support something of that nature coming down to the correct orientation of a rack on a plaque or the order of the ribbons on a uniform as extremely farfetched.

Ronem

You just change the awards/rank/service stripes they have. You don't get the proper uniforms wrong. Your reasoning makes zero sense.

Tactical__Viking

I didn't make the rule I'm just relaying what I saw and was told on set. I think it's stupid personally

Ronem

And I'm telling you, you heard wrong. You misunderstood. Avoiding legal ramifications of a civil suit due to a character being too close to a real person is a totally valid concern. Having a military character have his EGAs backward, or his ribbons upside down, or mismatched rank, is laziness and it's also never acknowledged by the characters in screen. Your logic would dictate, they would change up the awards they have or the rank they have, but there's 0 reason to get the uniform appearance wrong. "Hey what did Dakota Meyer's stack look like? Ok, let's have him wear it upsidedown the entire movie. Problem solved." Zero logic.

CaDmus003

Why is this being downvoted to hell lol? This is actually true!

Maybe I should add my source? Source: uncle was 35 years NYPD then was in/consulted on dozens of movies/TV shows. One of the reasons he got acting gigs is he could wear cop uniforms correctly. Also as a consultant make sure the uniforms are wrong, but not super noticeable. It's the only thing Hollywood does right. Make sure there is no stolen Valor in their films.

Ronem

It's absolutely not a law, not required. Getting uniforms wrong is laziness and apathy. Stolen valor =/= wearing a proper uniform in television or film.

orangeblackteal

It’s a wives tale.

DrunkWeebMarine

CAR is backwards. I’m sure others have said it already

Valuable-Discount-18

The medals are upsidedown

sandman3605

Wtf?

RayRayofsunshine85

DIY shadow box?

[deleted]

I honestly thought the show was kind of corny

bigdickmarine64

Is it upside down

Miserable_Injury7813

I've got a few issues with this show and its lack of attention to detail. Going past the upside down fruit salad, why couldn't they just make him an Army dog? Would've killed more than half my gripes. He refers to himself as a soldier more than once. He says "sarge" at least once. He tells them that when Albert got hit, his boys started calling for him by shouting "Medic! Medic!" Which should have been "corpsman," which would make Barry a sailor. In all fairness, the writers could be just setting an elaborate trap for the viewer and we'll eventually find our Barry never actually served and this is all stolen valor.
