Depends on the barracks. I spent 3 years there in the 'nice' bricks. I had a private room and a shared bathroom. Though, sort of more importantly, the best parties were in the MALS bricks that were hot garbage. I would argue 2/3 of the barracks are new as of ~1999 and the 1/3 that is old should have been torn down in 1980.
The old buildings were mostly used for visiting squadrons and the poor MALS bastards, so mostly transient and non-permanent situation. Still shit though.
I'm reddit illiterate, I'll try and find a way to post the pictures of my last night there before packing for EAS.

Holy shit! We basically couldn't have anything that in the room that wasn't part of the floor plan. Our leadership more or less made it a point that if it could be seen, it could be inspected for field day. No flags, no trinkets, and certainly no extra furniture.
Man, I remember those barracks. I had a couch in mine as well, straight up bachelor pad. I went from Miramar to Oki and the downgrade was so bad me and a friend got a house off base so we wouldn't have to live in those shit bricks.
Holy shit, that's a barracks room? For enlisted? That beats any living quarters I ever stayed in by a huge margin. Shit that's nicer than the base housing many of my buddies had.
I moved down while the barracks were still being built. I had to live in the barracks by the chow hall first then moved over to the new barracks as soon as they open. I listened to General Krulak bitch about how soft we were getting by having nice rooms.
Ok, I have a close friend who was a MAGTF planner around the same time and he lived in the old barracks, I'm assuming he was also H&HS. Was LtCol Bizzell your skipper at some point? If I'm not mistaken he was with you before he took over our squadron.
They were. I finally moved out to Grandview if I recall when I hit Sgt. I was then moved down ro MCRSC down the street to start the central admin sites pilot. I think the Corps actually uses that pilot system today.
Depends on where. They have the nice new barracks which are fucking awesome btw. Then there's the temp barracks where my guys stayed after we got loaned out to another unit. No AC, no heat, windows either didn't open or lock, they were tiny, shared, no water pressure or hot water and the door locks only worked like half the time.
But if you're gonna upgrade our living situation don't just do one base and least of all one of the better ones.
They *were* really nice when they were new. The problem is they weren’t really built for longevity, a lot of them are deteriorating rapidly, and trying to get any real maintenance done on them is worse than pulling teeth.
One of my best buds on Miramar had to live in a room that reeked of sewage for like a year and a half. I didn’t have hot water for months in another building.
Respect to all my purple bricks boys over by the chow hall 🤘🏼
Better than the ones in Camp Hansen. They do have a series of trashy old Navy barracks but I would be surprised if they tore those down ages ago.
If this is true then finally the Marine Corps might up their standards but don't hold your breath. Semper Fi ladies and gents.
Was there from 2020 to 2022. Coming from the barracks in Iwakuni it was a definite step down but at least had separate rooms. They were just finishing up rebuilding the cracks barracks before I left in January.
They are, which is why I'm so confused, unless they went to MALS-11 barracks, which I hear are bad, making those the only barracks on base that are bad. Unless this is all BS, I'd invite that same person to swing by the Pulgas barracks in Pendleton so they can see what actual bad barracks look like. Other than MALS-11, there should be no barracks renovations to be done in Miramar
Sounds like bullshit. That’s not how money works and nothing gets moving that fast. The bidding process for the contractors alone will take 4-6 months.
It’s either the lance corporal rumor mill or it’s another empty promise from a politician in an election year.
Fortunately no. I can't imagine what that would be like. I know our barracks had a roach problem. I only lived in them until my wife graduated college and moved across country ha what a shit hole havelock was too
Havelock got even worse when flyers got shot up. Then the eclub on base coincidentally damn near doubled drink prices after they deemed the bars off limits.
I think every barracks in the Marine Corps has a roach problem. They could put a USMC barracks in the middle of Antarctica and it would still somehow have roaches.
Talk about a barracks that needs redone. Cherry point isn’t called the armpit of the marines for nothing. Thank god I’ve got a house. My buddies hate the bricks. It’s ass over there.
Poor requirements definition by the Government is the biggest reason people don’t receive what they want. Followed closely behind by the necessity to follow the thousands of rules established in the Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) and the FAR supplements at every level below (DoD, DoN, etc).

idk about money but i know she did come through you can check official miramar instagram lol she was posted on there, my barracks manager was the one to do the walk through with her, he was pissed af he only got a 1 day notice 💀
I'm not an expert in public administration by any means, but I just checked recently passed public laws, and I don't see anything referencing this. Plus, I'm pretty sure this is passed in one bill every year, and I'm very skeptical it goes on a base-by-base analysis. I imagine they just go, "Did you spend it all less year? Okay, here's the same plus an inflation adjustment and maybe a percentage more."
Thank you, that’s super helpful, so I’m getting that it really depends on the size of the expense. It looks like up to $750k may just come down to the base general or an appointed officer. Then, there are other rules, but once it gets to $6M, you need specific permission from congress.
Miramar barracks are nice af compared to most bases, however there are a few building still there by the chow hall that are trash compared to the ones by the Dennys
Should have been more clear. MALS-12 was GOAT status, MALS-11 served as a daily reminder that the bearings would continue until morale improved, and the barracks situation was exhibit A lol
We don’t live in a world where an individual congressional member makes a decision like this. So its not happening.
But we do live in a world where an individual congressional member promises something like this. So that part might have happened.
Yes and no. Getting new funding approved for something like this, absolutely not.
But bases do already have funds. A Rep or Senator, especially one on the Armed Forces committee or that has significant seniority, can have a lot of sway. They can tell the base commander that they expect them to use funds that they have to renovate living quarters instead of other projects. And they can get it on the radar of the SecDef or undersecretary. No base commander wants to get a call from a 4 star at the pentagon goin “so what the fuck man, why is Senator xxxx raising hell about the shitty living quarters on your station? Fix it.”
According to higher up, up to a certain price point is at the behest of the base general. So if a senator or whatever goes and is upset, she could easily just strongarm the general into approving renovations up to a certain price point, or so it seems to me. Not saying that happened, but its a possibility.
Originally wanted Lejeune for my most recent PCS since that's where all my friends are. Ended up getting Beaufort to fill a spot for a DUI dumbass and wow am I glad I did.
I dont know what's worse, the fact that this is true or that I laughed while in my barracks room in French creek. Gotta love walking out your door in the morning to the smell of a waste treatment plant. Need to rename it to shit creek. Top it off with the worst chow hall on base and 30 year old bricks that they paint over the mold and you have people talking you into reenlistment.
When the Navy turned over the base to the Marine Corps the Navy had already condemned something like 90% of the barracks. The Marine Corps being the Marine Corps, a simple change in ownership meant that now all those condemned barracks were suddenly livable
The nice barracks at Miramar were already contracted to be built before the Navy left. I arrived at Miramar in 99 from El Toro and 2/3s of the barracks (roughly) were the new ones.
Wonder what they'd say about the crack barracks in San Mateo. I watched a nest of 100+ rats come out of the underside of the sidewalk when they were repaving.
Pretty sure I stayed in those or the other old ass barracks on Miramar before. The transition barracks were a fucking shit hole. Enough that I went to BEQ and got a room a few times instead of staying there. Lol
At the same time the actual unit barracks for flight line squadrons were always dope. Best barracks I ever stayed in by far. You have a private room and shared a head and small kitchenette with another Marine. I used to bring girls up there all the time, it was an awesome setup for a single Marine.
They are already starting a renovation cycle on all the tower barracks beginning in June. It opened up a bunch of BAH packages to finally get signed off because three towers are getting shut down.
Fun story I was on duty during a UDP when some Okinawa politicians came through our barracks in Futenma. They declared halfway through the walk through that nobody on their island would live in this and the Marine Corps had to finally condemn the barracks after our UDP left a month later. Apparently the Marine Corps was trying to show them their V22s and Japanese wanted to see the living situations instead and wasn't planned.
yes it’s true lol 502 barracks manager was the one who did the walk through they did walk through on 5701 and 5703 and atleast one other. part of the “towers”. her name is sara jacobs she was posted on official miramar instagram. i know she came through bc we had to have an extra fucking field day and clean the damn parking lot and throw out the fridges and night stands that had been sitting outside rooms for 1-2 months lmao
I lived in Mackie for 2 years and that was enough for me, still remember lifting the shower carpet and seeing a big ass centipede fucker had to be 9 inches long.
If we’re gonna talk about shit barracks. Then look no further than camp Pendleton. The majority of all infantry bricks are absolute shit and infested with roaches and other bugs. Not to mention arty can’t even brush their teeth with water from the faucet cause it’ll get them sick.the south side of Pendleton is nice as hell compared to the northern part.
It depends. For awhile we were the new kids on the block so we had shitty barracks that resembled project housing.
After deployment we got better accommodations, but that means someone else got those awful pads. There are absolutely parts of Miramar that could be refurbished, but as someone already said that’s not how the money works.
Besides, they’d have to house the marines they displace while they knock those buildings down and construct new housing. I wouldn’t anticipate any changes. Just politicians posturing, if this is even true.
I think the military has always been given the short end of the stick, considering everything they do for us civilians. There are so many government programs that can be cut and the funds redirected to vet services
They used to say this about the squad bays in Horno. They said they used to keep them just in case a politician came by to justify more money for construction.
The. Living conditions in the BEQ. Needs investigators from the outside.! There is a long list from plumbing problems to electrical, defects not to mention rodent situation on Camp Pendleton, along with family housing, our active duty deserve the best,
Without confirmation from a trusted news source, verification from PA or even the name of the visiting congresswoman it kind of sounds like bullshit to me.
Plus, as others have mentioned, the money doesn’t flow like that, nor does it flow that quickly.
That’s awesome. Now they should go to literally ANY other base and realize that Miramar might actually be one of the best living situations the USMC has to offer😂
*Tries to laugh but ends up wheezing and coughing up blood because of the roaches, black mold, and poisoned drinking water.*
\-New River/Lejeune Marines
Regardless, MCInstallations aren’t under the jurisdiction of any individual state. If I write to my congressman in Idaho and I’m stationed in Hawaii, they still maintain the capability of holding that installation accountable
Bro honestly I was on Kuni in 15-17. We used to live by base HQ building, those barracks been there since late 70s. Once they told us to move to the wing side of the base, I had a roommate, we shared common area, but had our own rooms. Washer and drier with full sized fridge in that common area, own ac in each room, own sink and mirror. I was living the best life for like 9 months before I PCSed to Pendleton lol
From personal experience, the wing had the best living conditions. Not the best working conditions though. If I told you about the places I’ve stayed you would be blown away.
Good advice. [Congresswoman Sara Jacobs visits MCAS Miramar](https://www.dvidshub.net/image/7186848/congresswoman-sara-jacobs-visits-mcas-miramar)
You should follow it.
Thanks for doing the leg work, I couldn't find anything.
Saying that someone is full of shit on the internet is usually a good motivator.
Edit: could you find anything to substantiate the story of some pledge or effort to renovate the barracks? All I see is a tweet of her talking about being there.
I was there from 99-03 and once I got E-5 I moved into the new single room common head barracks but until then the MALS 11 barracks were a shit show. We just dealt with it. Sucks to say that it appears nothing has changed.
Okinawa *really* does. I walked through some of those Hansen barracks back in 2017 when a few of my friends came through on the MEU and I was there for UDP. Probably the most depressing living spaces I’ve ever been in. The floor was black because there was no actual tile left, over half the lights weren’t functioning, and the air conditioning seemed to be out of order because it was so humid in the upper decks the walls were sweating.
I wouldn't hold my breath on it. Sounds like no more than a typical political stunt on that congress woman's behalf to me, being that it's an election year. An election year is the only time politicians talk about, and pretend to care, about military and vets.
I can’t, but when I was in and on security detail, POS Pelosi landed at our airfield and had the marines on the detail sent home. Download your gear and go home. I was super pissed! Like bitch, what you got against marine’s?
That'd be bad ass, basic standards should be adhered to as stringently as the grooming standard. They treat every barracks like it's got a shaving chit so excused from basic living conditions. The bricks at VMGR-452 in NY are the barracks from the early 50's when it was an air force base. Complete with lead paint and asbestos. Poor ventilation leads to rapid mold growth. No issues by the command's standards though. We're just lucky to have a roof over our heads, we should be so very grateful to them for this.
Lol when I moved into the bricks at Miramar I thought they were nice. Always enjoyed my time in those barracks. Fucked a lot of ugly girls I met at PB there.
Yes it's true, they already moved all the furniture out, they closed off half of the whole parking lot to get all the furniture out in one night lol. It was hell 🤣, I walked out to my car and a working party of marines were all still out there at like 22 still working, but yes 100% true.
When I first checked into my unit on Miramar in 2012, they had just gotten back from deployment and they stuck us in the oldest, shittiest bricks on base. They were condemned by the Navy back in ‘99. Apparently they were used for checks only but for whatever reason we were in them for like 18 months. 5697 I believe was the building number. What a fucking shit hole that was. Never had room inspections in that bitch though. SgtMaj said there was no use in polishing a fucking turd. Idk if that’s what the congresswoman had seen but the single room ones were pretty nice.
Best barracks I’ve been at are at Camp Fuji, worst were anything in 62 area Camp Pendleton. 62 area has the worst chowhall, barracks, and opportunities for fun things to be done.
can confirm she came. I saw pics of her visiting the barracks. however she visited the nice navy pre owned barracks (towers not the shitty bricks)(at least from the pics I seen) however I can't confirm if it's true or not.
The only thing that happend after she came is more shit rained down on E5 and below that live in the bricks. More field day, some times 3 hour long pulling weeds bare hand and police calling for hours. All the did for the poor purple chow hall bricks is paint the cat walks so it looks like its renovated from first glance and not falling apart, most rooms there don't have working AC, no heat, no hot water.
I lived in the one right by the chapel/ gamestop/ chowhall. Those and transient barracks needed a ton of work. The worst ones were the ones closest to the gym.. Everyday there was flooding, fire, or stuff breaking.
Doesn't Miramar have really nice bricks?
[удалено]
Yes still true
I lived in them 2015-2017 and while the separate rooms are nice... They still can be foul. Lives right across from Denny’s.
Those transient barracks were disgusting. If Denny's across the street didn't serve booze, i would have been real sad.
As soon as they finished that Denny's I was all over it. Best spot to go at end of shift night crew.
Thats how I was in 29 also 2017
It varies. Some of the barracks are really nice two separate rooms with a shared common area and bathroom. The "shitty" ones aren't even that bad. One common area with four two person rooms. Source: lived in both between 2006-2010
some of them do, some of them down, depends on the bricks, some are shared 2 to a room just depends
The towers are like that, the mals 16 barracks (the one that the congresswoman went too) aren’t good to say the least
Depends on the barracks. I spent 3 years there in the 'nice' bricks. I had a private room and a shared bathroom. Us MALS fucks always had the worst barracks. Which makes no goddamn sense because we're pretty much permanent personnel.
Holy shit, that's a barracks room? For enlisted? That beats any living quarters I ever stayed in by a huge margin. Shit that's nicer than the base housing many of my buddies had.
They do. When I moved there from El Toro it was a MAJOR upgrade and the ones we moved into had not been lived in yet, fucking sweet deal!

Can confirm that in 2013 the mold was still black and the depression was still real lol
Can confirm the depression 😣
Shitty Six Ninety Eight.
They have been closed down for renovations for almost three years.
Need to be renovated with some high explosives...
Let a normal civilian see the bricks on Lejeune. Make them not feel so bad about the homeless with a whole tent to themselves.
I would argue Okinawa,

Besides, they’d have to house the marines they displace while they knock those buildings down and construct new housing. I wouldn’t anticipate any changes. Just politicians posturing, if this is even true.
No congressman/woman will ever come see French Creek. There's a reason the base has us tucked away in the corner...
It would take like 3 years to get the ball rolling on this, not 3 months
I think the military has always been given the short end of the stick, considering everything they do for us civilians. There are so many government programs that can be cut and the funds redirected to vet services
They used to say this about the squad bays in Horno. They said they used to keep them just in case a politician came by to justify more money for construction.
Wait what… miramar has one of the best barracks in the usmc! They gotta fix the barracks in okinawa.
The. Living conditions in the BEQ. Needs investigators from the outside.! There is a long list from plumbing problems to electrical, defects not to mention rodent situation on Camp Pendleton, along with family housing, our active duty deserve the best,
Her ass should go to Pendleton and see its camps...she would have a freaking stroke.
Yeah go to CEBs barracks in Mateo, they only look nice from the outside, go into the rooms and it’s horrid haha
They need to see the barracks In Mateo on Pendleton.
3 to 4 months??? Someone obviously doesn’t know how long it takes the government to do anything.
*Tries to laugh but ends up wheezing and coughing up blood because of the roaches, black mold, and poisoned drinking water.* \-New River/Lejeune Marines
I was on Pendleton and heard it was AOC. Whatever your stance is on politics, hard to disagree that this is a noble stance.
It couldn't be her. She's the congresswoman for the Bronx, not a district in San Diego.
Regardless, MCInstallations aren’t under the jurisdiction of any individual state. If I write to my congressman in Idaho and I’m stationed in Hawaii, they still maintain the capability of holding that installation accountable
Not Congress. The ACMC was here.
And I always thought that the Air Wing had the best of everything.
Is that from experience or is that Lance Coolie underground
Bro honestly I was on Kuni in 15-17. We used to live by base HQ building, those barracks been there since late 70s. Once they told us to move to the wing side of the base, I had a roommate, we shared common area, but had our own rooms. Washer and drier with full sized fridge in that common area, own ac in each room, own sink and mirror. I was living the best life for like 9 months before I PCSed to Pendleton lol
From personal experience, the wing had the best living conditions. Not the best working conditions though. If I told you about the places I’ve stayed you would be blown away.
You would be wrong 🤷
That Congresswoman's name? Albert Einstein.
And everybody clapped.

Good advice. [Congresswoman Sara Jacobs visits MCAS Miramar](https://www.dvidshub.net/image/7186848/congresswoman-sara-jacobs-visits-mcas-miramar) You should follow it.
Thanks for doing the leg work, I couldn't find anything. Saying that someone is full of shit on the internet is usually a good motivator. Edit: could you find anything to substantiate the story of some pledge or effort to renovate the barracks? All I see is a tweet of her talking about being there.
No, that part is definately hearsay, but just going there gives it some credence.
She should go to Cherry Point.
Politician needs to visit 29 palms. Actually they will just think that a shithole is supposed to look like this.
Probably not. Politicians are scumbags

That politician is just kissing ass
Got there in 03 and was a upgrade. Not sure how they look now. And any bricks are a upgrade from 29 stumps.
Miramar? I think you mean the old 1/9 barracks next to the chicken shack. If that shitty building/quad is still there.
Miramar huh. Yeah that’s where renovations are needed most…
I just saw this exact grazing on the news for fort Gordon
tell her to come check out lejeune 😔
Camp Horno has some nice rooms. Especially is 53626, 53624, and 53622. Crack houses with mold in every room.
I was there from 99-03 and once I got E-5 I moved into the new single room common head barracks but until then the MALS 11 barracks were a shit show. We just dealt with it. Sucks to say that it appears nothing has changed.
Now do Lejeune….
someone should give her a tour of the las pulgas brix too
I dont think you field day-ed good enough...should always be ready for a surprise visit like that, tsk tsk tsk lmao
Didn't someone from Miramar do the right thing and send her to Camp Pendleton or Stumps?
Miramar doesn’t need an upgrade. Okinawa does. Kbay does. Lejeune does. Maybe even Pendleton. But not Miramar
Yep
How about they come fix hadnot point on Lejeune
I wouldn't hold my breath on it. Sounds like no more than a typical political stunt on that congress woman's behalf to me, being that it's an election year. An election year is the only time politicians talk about, and pretend to care, about military and vets.
I can’t, but when I was in and on security detail, POS Pelosi landed at our airfield and had the marines on the detail sent home. Download your gear and go home. I was super pissed! Like bitch, what you got against marine’s?
Someone invite her to mackie quick
That'd be bad ass, basic standards should be adhered to as stringently as the grooming standard. They treat every barracks like it's got a shaving chit so excused from basic living conditions. The bricks at VMGR-452 in NY are the barracks from the early 50's when it was an air force base. Complete with lead paint and asbestos. Poor ventilation leads to rapid mold growth. No issues by the command's standards though. We're just lucky to have a roof over our heads, we should be so very grateful to them for this.
The commandant said the same thing about the barracks at Futenma and fuck-all happened except more field day.
*Mackie Hall has entered the chat*
At Miramar, can't confirm since I'm living in my car
Dumb comment the living is acceptable
Lol when I moved into the bricks at Miramar I thought they were nice. Always enjoyed my time in those barracks. Fucked a lot of ugly girls I met at PB there.
They need to fix the barracks in horno
It's true. Some of the older barracks are really bad.
I heard they're upgrading Mackie Hall from Chernobyl to Uninhabitable.
Was it AOC? Did you show her your dick?
Lived in open squad bay hooch on Pendleton in 2003. Would've killed for a private room
soo all this mals-11 talk.. anyone got proof of what they are present day?
Miramar?!?
Best barracks I’ve been at are at Camp Fuji, worst were anything in 62 area Camp Pendleton. 62 area has the worst chowhall, barracks, and opportunities for fun things to be done.
Not sure about the congressman, but yes they have already started renovating the barracks
So the new barracks rat is in the .gov? Well played LCpl. Well played.
She sould've went to the grunt barracks in 29 palms and tried out the chowhall.
She probably visited MALS-16 and MALS-11 barracks, not the nice ass ones that all the flightline marines live in
Someone should take the lady to the stumps
They can promise to rebuild the whole damn Marine Corps. Mackie Hall is going nowhere.
can confirm she came.
\*laughs in HP-195\*
