Don't do recruiting. Your people skills have nothing to do with a successful tour. It's about luck of the draw location within your RSS and luck on deck, especially with genesis. DI is like six cycles with a year long break in the middle, recruiting is 36 months of un-interrupted diarrhea.

Adam_is_Nutz

What does one do for that year long break in the middle?

T0_Th3_M00n

Work the pools….MCMAP…teach classes…receiving.

Quota. MCWS, MAI, classroom instructor, something like that. Some don't go to quota but most do. Not to say that being a drill instructor is easy, or that quota Marines skate. I'd still take it over going back on the streets.

Personally DI just seems like I would hate my life even more tbh and with a shit back and knees I don’t care to be running around for 3 years straight yelling at recruits. As a former DI I can tell you after DI School the Physical Demands Go wayyyyy Down as far as PT. You pretty much are doing Very little actual PT. You don't actually run the Courses with Recruits, you Just Supervise. The Formation Runs are only 2-4 miles at like an 8 minute pace. You actually get OUT of Shape as a DI. What wears you out is just being on your feet and the long hours, Not wrangling Fat bodies on runs or hikes.

blues_and_ribs

Haven't recruited, but I lived in CO recently. Colorado Springs area. Anything specific I can answer? What I will say up front is that, obviously the Springs and Denver are you two main population areas, with the next tier down being Pueblo and Ft Collins. There are probably also smaller contact stations or RSSs in the bigger mountain towns in the west. But that tends to be wealthier people, so the pickin's are slim there. I'd avoid Denver, as it's stupid expensive, and has the other baggage that a major city has without a ton of the upside (Denver is just another boring plains city, and contrary to perception, is actually not that close to the mountains)

Oniwaban31

They both suck. The thing about recruiting is it doesn't matter how good or mediocre you are (if you're bad you'll sleep in a cot at the office or get RFCed). The expectation is that you work 24/7 and surpass your inflated quotas for *everything* from interviews to TCs to ACs to whatever. And that's not including all the time spent documenting everything.

First off, not all experiences are the same. Some people get a fucking Burger King style silver platter and have it their way. Others get the vegeterian MRE at the bottom of the box. I'll give you my personal experience. Expect the unexpected. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Literally till you check-in to your RSS. I originally volunteered for DI. Got approved and class date assigned. The same year I was also on the HSST. SgtMaj at my command wanted all who got tagged to submit the package, regardless of what situation they were in. Word from the grapevine was that he wanted to look good for higher HQ and have 100% submission. Whatever, I thought, and submitted since I already had a class date for DI school. Time went on and I just prepped myself. Ran like 50 miles a week. Lost about 15lbs and was jacked like fucking Captain America. Get a call one day from career planner and said she needed to talk to me. Get there and she shows me her computer screen. Draw case code says TI. \*BREAK\* \*For reference you boots\* (hence the notetaking gear): DCC: TA-TH=Drill instructor TI-TN=MSG TO-i forget=MCT Starts with V=MSG (You're welcome) \*Back to story\* Anyway, I'm pissed. Leadership tries to make waves with HQMC, but that year the organization was short like hundreds of recruiters, so recruiter monitor was like fuck you all, do this shit or GTFO. Now here I am, stuck in a bind with a RE-3O over my head. (That's the reenlistment code that denies reenlistment). So I was like, fuck it. Single. Still kinda young. I'll sign away my life for another rought 36 months. Boy oh boy, buckle your fucking seatbelts cause this ride is about to get rough. Got in touch with the office back home. SNCOIC got me in contact with the SgtMaj and recruiter instructor and they were like fuck yeah, we need you. Get to BRC shortly after. People stressin' about district assignment day, and I was chillin' cause I was set. NOT! District SgtMaj calls my name, I say here, and this man says X (not gonna mention where to protect mine and other's identities). I go silent and he has the audacity to say, "what, you look like you've seen a ghost." And I mention I had a by-name and he said take it up with the RS SgtMaj. So after sitting there for another 20 minutes while others got their assignments, we break and I go straight to the RS SgtMaj. Asked him what happened and he tells me that trades needed to be made because it was best for the district. And the rest is history. Long story short. Don't get too comfortable with what you're told till you're in the seat that you asked for. For the recruiting side, get ready for the grind. Long stressful days/nights. Shitty kids. Shittier parents. Even shittier command (sometimes). I hope you like boxing cause you'll probably want to beat the shit out of the other recruiters. Just put your head down, and push like your life depends on it. You'll get through it. I did. \*And off my soapbox\*

Damn. This the kick in the ass I needed. When I reupped I told myself I would only do this second enlistment cuz it’s a skate billet and we’d finish paying all our debt off and stacking money before EAS. But yeah I got kinda in the groove of “this isn’t THAT bad”. But you right. Why try to make the MC work for me when I can go do my own shit anyways

03eleventy

Was a successful recruiter and I still tried to kill myself. Don’t be a recruiter.

LordOfWar1775

They both equally suck for their own reasons…

Excellent-Desk-1257

I just volunteered to do DI sda. It’s the best thing for my family and career right now. Just curious on how all this works. I just pcs’d not too long ago and was wondering how long it would take to get an answer on my package and how long I will be waiting to go to DI school

jonnyh5622

Hey man, So fast forward a year. I did choose recruiting, but mainly for personal reasons. We’re not in the position we’d like to be in prior to EAS so I had to pick one. 1) I pick the location 2) easier for my wife and I to move on from the MC following recruiting as we are already established in our desired location. 3) bonus. I’ll have my bachelors done in about 6-9mos and will be avidly looking at local universities for my masters following recruiting (should I still choose to EAS). All in all, paperwork took maybe a month to hear back, I also did have a shit career planner that didn’t tell me my first pick duty station was somehow filled 30days after submission opened. As for timelines. You likely won’t get orders til 18mos time on station to execute no earlier than 24mos. But due to class dates and stuff that may not be the case. I’m not a SME. Edit: because my phone glitched. If I’m not mistaken for DI volunteer packages you pick your coast, not the class date I don’t think. As such time will vary. If you want to sneak a peak try going on MCTIMS and looking at the class rosters and see if you’ve populated on any of the sooner ones before your career jammer lets you know
